Battling Cancer

How might scientists make a cure for cancer, and if they already have, why don't they release to the public?

By: Victor Perez #17

  • Cancer is very deadly, killing millions a year even though it take years to kill. It needs to progress and let the tumor get bigger.
  • Process: Healthy cells' DNA gets damaged by something, therefore they multiply but don't die, making a tumor. The tumor expands towards the veins, and when it reaches its goal, some cells go inside the vein to travel to other body parts. Another tumor sprouts there. Pretty soon, the tumors get big enough to kill. For example, if there is a tumor in the lungs, it begins to block up the trachea (windpipe)
  • Some causes are: radiation, rays (sun rays cause skin cancer), select foods, chemicals, and drugs. Lung cancer, however has been linked to chromosome 19, something hereditary
  • Less than 10% of cancer patients live over 3 years.
  • There are hundereds of cancers in this world. One for every body part except the hair, teeth, and nails. In fact, there are so much, those cancers have variations! An example is lung cancer is made of SCLC (Small Cell Lung Cancer) and NSCLC (Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer).

Cancer Basics

  •  Lung cancer, although the most common (which kills more than prostate cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer, some of the most common cancers, combined), is actually one of the most preventable ones, with 87% being caused by smoking.
  • Some unexpected things that cause cancer are: microwave popcorn, soda, non-organic foods, canned tomatoes, processed meat, farmed salmon, potato chips, highly processed white flour, and diesel exhaust.
  • Current cancer treatments include: chemotherapy (using strong chemicals to kill off the cells), surgery (removing the tumor directly, not always applicable), radiation (using radiation to kill the cancer cells), and immunotherapy (modifying the cells and genes in the immune system to kill off the cancer cells). However, chemotherapy and radiation are risky because they cause vulnerablity, hair loss, and other side effects.
  • Due to the risks of treatments, there tests must be made starting with an examination of your medical history, blood tests, urine tests, and a fitness test. Then, they use multiple tools to see if there is a tumor or any malicious cells. Tools include X-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and fiber-optic endoscopy.
  • Scientists think we might be close to a cure due to Milton Wright III's story. He had leukemia once... it was eradicated. Twice... eradicated again. They thought he was clear, until a third leukemia sprouted. They tried everything, but had no luck. However, they had just experimented and discovered a new type of immunotherapy. Still, it wasn't sure whether it was safe. It was a life or death situatuion. Milton chose to try the immunotherapy. It worked successfully, fully eradicating the disease.

Cancer Treatments and Cures

  • Scientists accidently discovered malaria could cure cancer! It has been proven that the protein in the parasite cures it.
  • Experts say current cancer treatments fail because they focus on the glycolysis cell. They say that the body has a natural cancer fighting cell named the mitochondria. However, it needs a trigger to work, so scientists ignore it.
  • Some think we need seperate cures for cancer, but that may not be true.
  • Clinical trials are experimental and totally optional treatments for cancer.
  • In 2007, scientists from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada discovered a cure for cancer called dichloroacetate. However, the U.S. illegalized it. That is why we haven't heard it on the news. Skeptical...

  • Cancer cures is a controversial topic. Think about it. It has set up an empire. Many believe if it is cure, doctors and nurses will lose their jobs. The government and the pharmaceuticals will lose their jobs. They think the government is trying to prevent a cure so they won't lose money.
  • In 1964, the FDA spent millions to stop an alternative cancer treatment on the rise.
  • Many believe the government is keeping a secret cancer treatment and are hiding it.
  • Others disagree, saying the government and their families are equally prone to getting cancer.
  • Some say they would make money off making a cure, so the conspiracies are invalid.
  • Not all pharmaceuticals are for money, either, so they would try to find a cure.
