11Natalia is enrolled in our Therapeutic Mentoring Program and has been working with her mentor, Autumn, forover a year. Natalia is a 17-year-old senior in high school who lives in a single parent household with her momand her younger brother. She is a proud Puerto Rican young woman who hopes to become an environmentalengineer one day. Her goal is to work within cities to help innovate more efficient systems that will helpalleviate climate change. As a teen, Natalia received a diagnosis of PTSD and generalized anxiety disorder dueto a violent upbringing. Her struggles also resulted in a history of selective mutism in her childhood. Nataliahas struggled to interact with her peers as well as her family, and much of her adolescent years have beenaffected due to her severe social apprehensiveness. She found herself missing a significant amount of schooldays due to her PTSD and triggering behaviors from teachers and fellow students. Coincidingly, her gradesbegan to suffer, and she felt as though she needed to make a serious change but didn’t know where to start. She was referred to TM services to work on how to best cope with her anxiety, build her independent lifeskills, and work on her self-esteem and self-confidence. At first, she was very shy and struggled to open-up toher mentor, but eventually Autumn was able to build a rapport with her over the course of the first month andthey were able to connect. Natalia and Autumn have shared many common interests such as enjoying theVampire Diaries tv show, Taylor Swift, and a common interest in helping the environment. Since being referredto TM services, Natalia gained the ability to conquer her first set of goals established with her mentor- buildingher confidence and utilizing coping skills. She’s now currently working on building her independent life skills by learning to drive and pump gas, fillingout college applications, and applying for jobs. She has been able to conquer most of her fear surroundingpublic speaking by taking an AP Seminar Class in school and has been able to make a group of friends withinthis class as well. She currently is working toward raising her GPA and graduating from high school, and shealso has recently received her driver’s license. She is working hard towards obtaining a co-op job where she plans to work in the Fall River wastewater department not only for her interestin becoming an environmental engineer but also to complete her Seniorresearch project. Natalia continues to grow and become more confident inherself and in making her own decisions. She has been consistentlyaccomplishing important milestones, and Autumn will continue to assist her inmeeting her goals to graduate from TM services and thrive in her adult life byadvocating for herself in the way which her mentor has. After working with my mentor, I now feel a lot more comfortabledoing things I never would have even tried. One thing that Ilearned specifically was how to advocate for myself, this was ahuge milestone for me.A C l i e n t S u c c e s s
