Message from KatieThis year has been one of growth and change for the English Skills Learning Center.We’ve expanded programs, responded to an increasing demand for services, andadapted approaches to ensure we meet the evolving needs of the community. Frompiloting new instructional methods to training community members in new ways, wecontinue to innovate and make a lasting impact.We’ve also faced challenges, but with the resilience of our staff, volunteers, students,and partners, we’ve turned those challenges into opportunities for growth. This workwould not be possible without the continued support of our community, and I amdeeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to our mission.I invite you to explore this annual report to see the full scope of what we’veaccomplished together. July 2023The start of a new year always bringsthe promise of hope and the spirit ofinnovation. These student smiles speakvolumes and reflect the positive energywe have moving into a new school year. August 2023The ESLC was invited to join a panel for awebinar hosted by the Enhancing Access forNew Americans and Refugees (EARN) Project.In the panel, we featured how we encouragelinguistic integration through a multilingualapproach. September 2023The ESLC was awarded a GOAT (Greatestof All Time) Award from the Utah StateBoard of Education - Adult Education teamfor our remarkable posttesting and levelgain rates!October 2023The Intermountain TESOL conference wasan opportunity to learn from and share ourknowledge with our collegues in the field ofEnglish language teaching.
november 2023At Utah Philanthropy Day we recognized severaloutstanding volunteers -- Susie Angerbauer,Danette Holley, Katherine Chandler, Toni Myers,Tanya Lelanuja, and Scott Blake. We are thankfulfor all community volunteers who work alongsideus to create stronger communities. We couldn’t dothis work without you! December 2023The ESLC was awarded the contract to became thesole provider of English, literacy, digital skills, andvocational English training at the HumanitarianCenter. We are thrilled to continue strengtheningprogramming and partnership with the UtahRefugee Services Office and the Church of JesusChrist of Latter-day Saints in this space. january 2024The Utah Legislative Session broughtopportunity to spotlight student success andbring awareness to challenges facing NewAmericans in Utah. We participated inseveral Day on the Hill events and advocatedfor adult learners. february 2024The Annual ESLC English Language TeachingConference brought together experiencedand new teachers in the field. Staff sharedsessions about immigration pathways,humor in the classroom, strengthens-basedapproaches and more!
march 2024Katie led a three-hour preconferencesession at the Coalition for Adult BasicEducation’s (COABE) National Conferencein Nashville, Tennessee. Attendeeslearned how to effectively teach studentslearning to read and write for the firsttime.april 2024In April, the ESLC participated in the UtahCommunity Schools Convening. The ESLCpartners with K-12 schools to enhanceefforts related to parental engagement andfamily literacy to ensure school readinessand later achievement for young children. may 2024The Annual Literacy Legacy Event was ahuge success. Gathering with communitymembers to celebrate the impact ofliteracy education will always be ahighlight of the year. june 2024Community members helped assemble 100student kits to help adult learners succeed inclass during the Show Up for SummerService Event hosted by First Lady Abby Cox.The ESLC is proud to participate in this eventand thankful to everyone who stopped byour booth!
Katie was invited to represent Utah adult education providers at anational forum hosted by the EARN project in Falls Church, Virginia.There, she engaged with other programs from across the countryand connected with members of the Department of Education and theUnited States Citizenship and Immigration Services. She advocatedfor increased access for literacy level learners, better pathways forinternationally trained professionals, and increased funding to meetthe high demand for adult education services, specifically Englishlanguage classes, seen across the country. EXPANDING OUR REACHKatie was able to join Rob Jenkins and Staci Johnson incelebrating the launch of the latest book in their Stand Out series,Literacy Foundations. Katie has been providing feedback to theauthors and the team at National Geographic Learning throughoutthe development of this book. In addition, Amber, Jess, and Maddieparticipated in an online forum to provide feedback on the firstdraft of materials. Because of our dedication throughout theproject, the English Skills Learning Center was included on theacknowledgements page of the final textbook. What an honor!1The ESLC was featured in a spotlight paper published by theEnhancing Access for Refugees and New Americans (EARN)project at the federal level for our efforts to incorporate civiceducation across programming. Literacy LegacyESLCAWARDSTanya Lelanuja was the recipient of thisyear’s Community Voices Award,recognized for her dedication andadvocacy within the community. Tanyaserved on the ESLC Board for nine years.She gives back to the community throughadvocacy efforts and numerous volunteerroles. Tanya demonstrates a deepcommitment to ensuring that everyone,regardless of their background, has thechance to thrive in our community.Community VoicesThis year, Scott Blake was honored withthe Jean and Bruce Bingham LiteracyLegacy Award. His unwaveringcommitment to supporting individualsprepare for the citizenship interview andhis ongoing contributions have left alasting impact on the students and theEnglish Skills Learning Center. Scott hasbeen volunteering for over 10 years, andwe estimate that he has helped 250individuals become U.S. citizens duringhis time with the ESLC.
