the FSA is a provincial learningassessment that focuses onLiteracy and Numeracyit is a common assessment forall Grade 4 and 7 students the Numeracy componentassesses a child’s ability toapply important math skills, solve problems andcommunicate their solutionsit is NOT a high stakesassessment and does notimpact student grades orlearning updatesMake sense of mathematicalsolutions in context by assessing thepracticality and possible limitations ofsolutions, identify possibleimprovements to an approach, orrelate the solution to other contexts.Translate real world problems intomathematical language, by choosingappropriate tools to solve problems, organize and connect information, and create relationships.Solve mathematical problems thatare based on real life situationsand show their understanding bychecking mathematical solutions.REASON AND ANALYZEWHAT IS THEFOUNDATION SKILLSASSESSMENT?WHAT SKILLS AREBEING ASSESSED INNUMERACY?APPLYUNDERSTAND AND SOLVECOMMUNICATE & REPRESENTUse mathematical language effectivelyto express solutions supported bylogical evidence. WHAT DOES IT LOOKLIKE? The FSA is a Literacy and Numeracyassessment for all Grade 4 and 7studentsIt is completed as part of regularclassroom learningThe Numeracy component includes:Paper based tasks: 3 written response questions 1 self-reflection questionOnline task: 30 multiple choice questions The Numeracy sections can be doneover several days and require lessthan two hours to complete. Students can have extra time asneeded Students do not need to prepare forthe assessment but teachers willensure that students are ready byoffering practice activitiesStudents can access any of thesupports that they usually use inclass to complete the assessment
