The Team to B eat Hockey T he hockey season is underway and the Friars are coming into the season as the team to beat As expected their fiercest competition and biggest rival is Chaminade This year s Friar Team is comprised of hardworking players that seek to improve in every aspect of the game We are the team to beat They are a versatile group with tremendous depth They have two solid goaltenders an impressive defense built on size and speed and offensively can move the puck and light the lamp Their special teams are tops in the league and can score at any moment Coach Lund says In order to win a championship the team must have discipline teamwork never taking any team lightly believing you can win and working as hard and as smart as you can every practice and game We are the team to beat and can t take that lightly Each game is a stepping stone to improving for the next one so we are prepared for the LI Playoffs and NY State Championship game which is our ultimate goal states Coach Lund This season as seen many players step up in a big way Ryan Mahlmeister and Joe Pacifico Asst Captain have really surprised the coaching staff with their scoring The Power Play has been led by Ryan Mahlmeister Nick Cozzi Greg Barnych Asst Captain Michael Haggerty Asst Captain and Andrew Sciaretta Captain The Penalty Kill has been strong with contributions from Michael Haggerty Andrew Sciaretta Connor Szambel Ryan Haight Nick Cozzi and Greg Barnych As of January 28th the Friars stand at 13 0 having scored an impressive 90 goals while only giving up 21 They swept the season series against Chaminade winning 8 4 3 2 and an exciting 4 3 vicory in the final seconds Alex Rocco Dave Anderson News 12 Varsity 04 Friar Scoreboard Winter Winter Friar Scoreboard 05

Discipline and Excellence Boys Soccer The St Anthony s boys soccer team had yet another successful season The team finished with an impressive 18 2 3 record undefeated in league play until the NSCHSAA final The Friar s played a strong regular season schedule against teams like Long Island powerhouses Commack and Massapequa as well as nationally ranked LaSalle Academy Fairfield Prep Calvert Hall and Archbishop Curley winning three and tying one The most entertaining matchups to watch however were against rival Chaminade High School The teams met twice throughout the course of the season One match resulted in a tie while the other ended in close Friar victory at CY Donnelly field The Friars outscored their opponents 82 17 and even had four 8 0 victories The team was lead by a solid senior class and wouldn t have done nearly as well without them Senior Fernando Robayo was the leading point scorer on Long Island and teammate s Ryan Carfora and Cole Orent weren t far behind him finishing in the number four and five spot In fact St Anthony s had 5 players make the top scorers list more 08 Friar Scoreboard Winter than any other school Additionally Fernando Robayo and Giancarlo Franco were named to Newsday s All Long Island Boys Soccer team Both of these players were leaders on the field and made invaluable contributions to the Friar s season Although the Friars lose offensive leader Fernando Robayo coach Corrao explained that next year s team is still poised for success Even though Fernando led our league in scoring he would be the first one to acknowledge his teammates especially guys like Cole Ryan Giancarlo Mike and Nick who contributed greatly to his accomplishments Losing the seniors to graduation is always difficult but our program is built from the bottom up We are optimistic that the core group of JV players coming up will fit in well with our returning core group of players and become an integral part of the 2017 team Junior Goalie Rob Leamy is one of the integral pieces of a strong returning core Leamy had a total of 95 saves this year the most in the entire NSCHSAA He made countless essential saves to give his team the best chances for success Most notably he made a series of saves late in the regular season win This year s team was very close on and off the pitch Everyone showed up everyday with a great attitude prepared to train hard we had a lot of fun and the guys really enjoyed their time together Coach Don Corrao against Chaminade that preserved a 1 0 result that would give the Friars the top spot in the league Year after year the team has great coaching passion and a desire for winning that is expected from a St Anthony s team This combination has proved to be a successful one over the past few seasons and they hope to continue this legacy and reputation of greatness in the future Chris Bergmann News 12 Varsity Coach Corrao s Our approach is very consistent year after year We work very hard during our preseason to get ready for what is a very competitive league Perspective and non league schedule We are fortunate to be able to play a national schedule as we seek to finish among the top teams in the nation With that you hope that those experiences will put you in a position to realize your goals in order to finish first in league play and to win a league championship and state championship After going undefeated in league play finishing first we were in position to finish the season on a high note Unfortunately we did not finish the many opportunities we had in the final and we came up short in double overtime Next season we will get after it again and hopefully it will result in getting back to the championship game and come out with a different result Mike Russo Winter Friar Scoreboard 09

an amazing recovery In the postgame press conference Molloy explained what led him to the field I needed to be out there Being on the sidelines last weekend was the hardest thing ever I couldn t do that again Whatever the risks were I had to take them A couple days after the loss Molloy finally received the surgery on his foot This was one day before the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony Again Molloy managed to fight through demanding physical pain in order to experience this life changing night using a scooter borrowed from a Brown freshman girl swimmer Moving Forward of the playoffs On May 14th 2016 during fourth quarter of the Hopkins vs Brown playoff game Molloy already with 4 goals and 4 assists went down injured after hooking his right foot The result a Jones fracture 5th metatarsal Pushing through Adversity For most people a Jones fracture is a season ending injury that requires surgery Molloy on the other hand decided to fight through the pain After the injury Molloy visited several doctors who told him that immediate surgery was required and that he had no chance of continuing in the playoffs Luckily the doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgeries in New York City gave Molloy more than one option either get a provisional surgery to remove most of the pain where if he hurt his foot again there was a chance he would be out indefinitely or take a pain shot and wait until the end of the season to get the required surgery Molloy of course chose the second option Molloy battled through the playoffs playing through excruciating pain During the quarterfinal game against Navy Molloy had to sit out because the pain became too unbearable Molloy could barely put any pressure on his foot Without Dylan running the offense Brown was still able to pull off an 11 10 victory Sitting out however only motivated Molloy to recover What s more Brown was slated to play in the Final Four the last time Brown 247 Career Points 12 Friar Scoreboard Winter made it this deep into the playoffs was 1994 Molloy did not want to miss out on potentially his only chance of making the Final Four Although the team prepared to play without him Molloy was luckily able to play on game day He was even able to put on his normal cleats and run Molloy claims that the pain shot helped tremendously but credits his adrenaline for the main factor that caused his ability to recover so quickly and play Unfortunately Maryland got the upper hand and defeated Brown in double overtime Molloy displayed great character after the game Even though Brown lost Dylan was proud because he was able to play in one more game his team made it extremely far and he had 2014 Four time Ivy Rookie of the Week they would heed his advice I want younger athletes to never give up Courage and success in life for me has come from not giving up If I want something it is going to be nearly impossible to stop me from not working to achieve my goal I truly hope children out there learn to never give up Great things will come to those that work hard Molloy isn t just an athlete but a scholar first academics has always been the most important thing in my life When choosing Brown I was looking for an institution that offered one of the best educations possible I was blessed with the opportunity to a attend a great school and play the game that I love Head Coach for Saint Anthony s Keith Wieczorek had nothing but great things to say about Molloy He was one of the hardest working players that I have ever coached He always strived for success Dylan is extremely coachable and did whatever he can to help out his teammates The amount of work he put in amazes me in the classroom on the field and in the weight room I m extremely proud of his success St Anthony s congratulates Dylan on winning the prestigious Tewaaraton Award and hopes for his continued success Vin Carboni Recently during fall ball Molly took the field to prepare for another dominant season Molloy made it clear however that this year is about the team goals and not his personal stats I would ve much rather won the national championship last year than the Tewaaraton This year as a team we are working even harder to achieve that goal Molloy also said I don t care how my stats are this year I want to reach the Final Four one more time It will be a tough journey but I will do everything willingly possibly to make it happen even if that means making my teammates look better than me Molloy s desire to share his success isn t only found on the field Molloy left parting words for younger student athletes and hoped Brown University Athletics Communications 2015 Ivy League Player of the Year 2016 Four time Ivy Player of the Week Winter Friar Scoreboard 13

an amazing recovery In the postgame press conference Molloy explained what led him to the field I needed to be out there Being on the sidelines last weekend was the hardest thing ever I couldn t do that again Whatever the risks were I had to take them A couple days after the loss Molloy finally received the surgery on his foot This was one day before the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony Again Molloy managed to fight through demanding physical pain in order to experience this life changing night using a scooter borrowed from a Brown freshman girl swimmer Moving Forward of the playoffs On May 14th 2016 during fourth quarter of the Hopkins vs Brown playoff game Molloy already with 4 goals and 4 assists went down injured after hooking his right foot The result a Jones fracture 5th metatarsal Pushing through Adversity For most people a Jones fracture is a season ending injury that requires surgery Molloy on the other hand decided to fight through the pain After the injury Molloy visited several doctors who told him that immediate surgery was required and that he had no chance of continuing in the playoffs Luckily the doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgeries in New York City gave Molloy more than one option either get a provisional surgery to remove most of the pain where if he hurt his foot again there was a chance he would be out indefinitely or take a pain shot and wait until the end of the season to get the required surgery Molloy of course chose the second option Molloy battled through the playoffs playing through excruciating pain During the quarterfinal game against Navy Molloy had to sit out because the pain became too unbearable Molloy could barely put any pressure on his foot Without Dylan running the offense Brown was still able to pull off an 11 10 victory Sitting out however only motivated Molloy to recover What s more Brown was slated to play in the Final Four the last time Brown 247 Career Points 12 Friar Scoreboard Winter made it this deep into the playoffs was 1994 Molloy did not want to miss out on potentially his only chance of making the Final Four Although the team prepared to play without him Molloy was luckily able to play on game day He was even able to put on his normal cleats and run Molloy claims that the pain shot helped tremendously but credits his adrenaline for the main factor that caused his ability to recover so quickly and play Unfortunately Maryland got the upper hand and defeated Brown in double overtime Molloy displayed great character after the game Even though Brown lost Dylan was proud because he was able to play in one more game his team made it extremely far and he had 2014 Four time Ivy Rookie of the Week they would heed his advice I want younger athletes to never give up Courage and success in life for me has come from not giving up If I want something it is going to be nearly impossible to stop me from not working to achieve my goal I truly hope children out there learn to never give up Great things will come to those that work hard Molloy isn t just an athlete but a scholar first academics has always been the most important thing in my life When choosing Brown I was looking for an institution that offered one of the best educations possible I was blessed with the opportunity to a attend a great school and play the game that I love Head Coach for Saint Anthony s Keith Wieczorek had nothing but great things to say about Molloy He was one of the hardest working players that I have ever coached He always strived for success Dylan is extremely coachable and did whatever he can to help out his teammates The amount of work he put in amazes me in the classroom on the field and in the weight room I m extremely proud of his success St Anthony s congratulates Dylan on winning the prestigious Tewaaraton Award and hopes for his continued success Vin Carboni Recently during fall ball Molly took the field to prepare for another dominant season Molloy made it clear however that this year is about the team goals and not his personal stats I would ve much rather won the national championship last year than the Tewaaraton This year as a team we are working even harder to achieve that goal Molloy also said I don t care how my stats are this year I want to reach the Final Four one more time It will be a tough journey but I will do everything willingly possibly to make it happen even if that means making my teammates look better than me Molloy s desire to share his success isn t only found on the field Molloy left parting words for younger student athletes and hoped Brown University Athletics Communications 2015 Ivy League Player of the Year 2016 Four time Ivy Player of the Week Winter Friar Scoreboard 13

Fe atured wanted to be a member of the Friar family Dan has made his time as a Friar by taking a challenging course load being a dedicated student athlete as well as being a positive influence in the Friar community Lord considers his brother the most beneficial influence in his life My brother has autism He has only had a positive impact on my life My brother indirectly taught me to be mature at a young age I look up to him and he looks up to me I I knew I wanted to be don t know where I would be in my part of the Friar Family life if I didn t have him in my life Daniel Lord was selected as this issues Featured Friar He is a model for all student athletes Dan is member of Varsity Football National Honor Society Pipe Band and Student Council Dan can be described as well rounded hardworking and dedicated Over the past four years Dan learned how hard work really feels After working hard in the classroom weight Five years old is the age when Lord room and on the gridiron every day first strapped his shoulder pads and to help not only himself but also put on a helmet He played in the the peers around him Dan was reSachem Youth Football League warded with the role of captain for Dan s academic schedule can be described as challenging With several honors courses he maintains an impressive grade point average of 90 Dan considers attending St Anthony s to be one of the most beneficial choices in his lifetime Lord chose to come to St Anthony s because he wanted to be part of the best high school experience both on and off the field There was a desire for him to become a part of a new family and to make new friends with the ability to grow and thrive in such an amazing atmosphere I chose to come to St Anthony s because I wanted to be challenged both in the classroom and on the field St Anthony s has one of if not the best education and athletics on the Island I knew I Dave Anderson News 12 Varsity 20 Friar Scoreboard Winter F r ia r this season As he describes it A Scouts will last him a lifetime Dan leader is one who knows the way lives by the Scout Law On the field goes the way and shows the way he is a better teammate more caring for the success of the other Friars Lord s varsity career has had its ups developed into a harder worker and and downs In his junior year he was a relentless Off the field Dan is one of role player on the team Being a player the nicest people you will ever meet on the team meant the world to Dan He was able to play the sport that he Alone we can do so little loved with the friends that he met together we can do so much along the way Lord describes being a member of the Friar s football team Lord has made a lasting impression by the Helen Keller quote Alone on almost everyone in his four years we can do so little together we can at Saint Anthony s As of now Dan is do so much Lord planned to lead undecided with what he will major in the Friars to seek revenge this year at college However Dan does know what he will be doing in the future Last year the Friars were heart Dan was honored with and rewarded broken by losing in the playoffs a full scholarship to West Point Dan wanted to bring the cham United States Military Academy Dan pionship plaque back to South will be playing defensive end for the Huntington Unfortunately the Black Knights next fall Lord will be Friars lost in the league semi finals serving our country in after he gradthis past season However Dan was uates in the United States Military awarded Joe Thomas award for his performance this past season The After also considering Fordham and Joe Thomas Award is awarded to Stony Brook Lord chose West Point the best lineman in the NYCHSFL because he thought that it was the best opportunity for him to succeed in life He considers it an honor to give back and serve in the military West Point was the best option where he can do both succeed and serve Dan considers attending St Anthony s one of the best decisions he has made because of the way he was prepared for the future St Anthony s has prepared me for the future in many different ways St Anthony s has taught me how to be a well rounded student and athlete I learned how to manage my time better and to plan ahead I plan on using every lesson that I learned in the classroom and on the field for the rest of my life Keep a close look at Dan on the field and in college Lord has truly made a lasting impression on the Friar community Congratulations Dan keep up the terrific success Outside of school Dan is very involved in his community Lord is currently on the path to becoming an Eagle Scout Eagle Scout is the highest rank in all of Scouting A Boy Scout is one who is diligent helpful adventurous compassionate active loving creative social and team players The lessons that Dan learned in Boy Winter Friar Scoreboard 21
