I decided that if I was going to do something,why not do something that actually makes a difference.So, in 2003, I got my start in health care. My first job in health care was as a scheduler for a non-medical home care agency and with that I realized rightaway that my passion was in long term care. Over theyears I dedicated myself to learning anything andeverything possible to assist people who desire to stayhome and remain independent. Every company I workedfor and every position I held only increased myexperience and knowledge base and provided me a well-rounded background that would help me to be more ofan asset to my clients.Then one day, I was forced to experience the one thingno one wants to experience. My mother had beenbattling health issues for years, but now it had turnedserious. As she lay unconscious in the ICU, I was forcedto make extremely difficult decisions, alone, and withlittle help. I found myself struggling to get enoughinformation from the medical staff to understand, plan,and figure out what to do. One would think being in theindustry at this point for almost a decade, receiving myCertified Senior Advisor certification and spendingcountless hours helping other families in the samesituation, I would be ahead of the game and be preparedfor this. But, as we all know, nothing is as easy as itseems. Besides having to make extremely difficult life and deathdecisions for my mother, the biggest frustration was thelack of support I got from the health care staff. Leadingup to this, even for someone with a background likemine, trying to find resources and navigating thehealthcare system was intensely frustrating andconfusing. It angered me, frustrated me, and made metruly understand (finally) what my clients were goingthrough. It was this experience that pushed me to beeven more dedicated to helping as many people as Icould.In order for me to start this new journey however, itmeant a change. I was working for large corporationsthat “to me” were more interested in making moneythan being helpful to those we were serving. I decidedthat the only way for me to make a difference was tostart my own company. So I started a consultingcompany.With this consulting company, my goal was to consultwith smaller business owners who were in the long-termcare industry and help them with their mission ofproviding quality care to those we serve. I thought thatby helping other companies, I could have the greatestreach affecting the most people possible. It wasn’t long though until my true passion came back tothe surface. One of my consulting clients saw mypassion and suggested I start my own company. Thisgot me thinking, if non-medical home care was where Istarted this must be where I needed to be. So with a littlepush and support from friends and family, I startedTalem Home Care.Our first thought was to buy a franchise. However, afterdoing our research and being in the industry for so long,we didn’t like the way a normal franchise was ran.
