FPA INTERIMEXECUTIVE CHAIR03 FPA CONNECTWell, what a fantastic Awards night we had and wasn’t Tom Allen great!Congratulations to all the worthy winners. The fact that many of you are shouting aboutit demonstrates just how proud you are of the achievements of your companies andyour people. Another success we should all be proud of is the £8,000 raised forWasteAid from ticket donations, the raffle and the auction on the night. These fundswill make a real difference to the charity’s work so a big thank you to everyone whocontributed.I’d like to give a special mention to the winner of my Chair’s Award – Justin Turquet –Justin, for me, is the very embodiment of what the FPA needs to be going forwards.Dare I say it, of the slightly younger generation, willing to voluntarily share his time onbehalf of the FPA, utilising his skills and experience for the good of others.Which leads me to the future of the FPA, I was delighted that Peter Macqueen andJohn Sorsby of Sheffield Hallam University were able to attend and present the RisingStar Award. Peter and John want to develop the apprenticeship side of the industrymore – something the FPA should wholeheartedly support.I have been collating a list of everything I believe the FPA needs to address, not justindustry wide, but internally too, and we will go through this at our next Board meeting. There is an awful lot of hard work that goes into the Awards, but now some of the realwork begins too. It's not all work though, don’t forget our annual Golf and Activities Day at StavertonPark on 12 June, the team are now focusing on delivering another successful event. Aswell as Golf members can choose try their hand at a golf lesson, or activities includingkarting, axe-throwing and laser tag. College caterer gains multiple benefits from CelebrationPackaging's zero-touch wooden cutlery dispenser08 FPA CONNECT MEMBER AD Cardiff & Vale College (Coleg Caerdydd a’r Fro) has found success using CelebrationPackaging’s zero-touch disposable wooden cutlery dispensers. “We trialled the dispensers in one canteen and the feedback was really positive and nowthey have been rolled out across all catering sites,” says Anthony Ruston, Head ofDepartment – Catering and Retail Operations. “Customers appreciate that it keeps thecutlery in a more sanitary condition than a traditional tray and we are using less cutlery, ascustomers take what they need and there are fewer breakages.”Celebration Packaging’s new revolutionary dispensers have been proving popular withcatering facilities managers across the UK, as they deliver a combination of hygiene, convenience and sustainability.Celebration Packaging Director, David Oates says: “There are no levers or buttons – end-users simply pull the cutlery handle from the dispenser. A sanitary solution, it significantlyreduces contamination by bacteria, germs and viruses, common with traditional opentrays and pots. Also operators have zero contact with the cutlery when filling thedispenser.” Ideal for self-service areas, takeaway and QSR restaurants, food kiosks, food courts, servicestations and stadiums, the unit has a small footprint on counters or can be wall or standmounted. High-quality and robust, it is easy to maintain as the transparent housing showsthe cutlery level and no power or batteries are required. It is also easily branded. Wooden cutlery is 100% natural and the perfect alternative to the now banned single-useplastic cutlery. EP GROUP JOINS THE ALLIANCE FORFIBRE-BASED PACKAGINGEP Group has joined the Alliance as a founding member -a move that reflects their leadership in paper-ledinnovation and sustainability. As one of the UK’s leadingsuppliers of fibre-based packaging, EP Group believes ithas a responsibility to help guide industry decision-making.Launched in February 2025, the Alliance for Fibre-BasedPackaging brings together suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and trade bodies to:· Ensure fair representation in EPR, that fibre-basedformats aren’t unfairly penalised as the UK adopts the‘producer pays’ model.· Maximise acceptance of fibre formats: clarity, consistency, and infrastructure support so thesesolutions stay recyclable at scale.· Shape future recycling and waste policy withgovernment and industry.Fibre-based packaging is already a critical part of dailylife — protecting goods, reducing plastic, and keepingsupply chains moving across the UK.But it needs champions in the policy space, not just themarketplace.EP Group is proud to be part of this Alliance. For retailers, food brands, or packaging stakeholders navigating EPRor planning for long-term sustainability, this matters tothem too. Packaging development doesn’t take place inisolation. And neither should the policies that govern it.
