CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT PREVENTION Our focus is unwavering on preventing child abuse in all of its forms across Virginia All parents want their children to be successful in school life and work In spite of that we know that the root of child abuse and neglect is often related to lack of role models limited education and few support systems And we know that parenting is not instinctive That s why we promote programs that Provide all parents with information and support so they can raise and nurture their children without physical or emotional abuse knowledge and tools to prevent child abuse and neglect Trauma such as childhood abuse and neglect increase the chance of illness substance abuse and early death in adults It is critical that where child abuse has occurred services designed to support children and families do not re traumatize them That s why we re infusing an emphasis on trauma informed practice throughout our services and trainings and it s also why we ve partnered with Voices for Virginia s Children Greater Richmond SCAN and Family and Children s Trust Fund of Virginia to convene the first statewide conference on trauma informed services in 2019 Organize and expand evidence based high quality home visiting programs to provide ongoing support to families prenatally through age five Train teachers day care providers doctors and other professionals about how to prevent abuse and how to recognize and treat abuse when it does occur Support laws policies and programs that protect children This year we celebrated the 35th anniversary of Hugs and Kisses a traveling theatrical production that educates elementary school children about how to keep safe from or report sexual abuse Performed by the Virginia Repertory Theatre Hugs and Kisses To ensure Hugs and Kisses continues reaches more than 40 000 Virginia elementary students for many more years to come Families each year through 160 performances Along with the Forward and Virginia Rep established performances educators learn how to responsibly and an endowment honoring Prevent Child compassionately respond to a child s disclosure of Abuse Virginia s founding executive abuse and how to engage the proper authorities director Johanna Schuchert She retired in 2018 after 42 years of leading child We re also changing social norms because everyone abuse prevention efforts in Virginia no matter their situation or socio economic outlook needs help parenting and should know it s ok to ask for help That s why we ve worked to increase the number of Circle of Parents support groups and expanded our 1 800 CHILDREN parenting support warm line that now includes a texting option and is available 24 7 We re focused on positive parenting because we know that being a supportive and responsive parent can help set children on positive paths It s also why we re expanding I don t like to use the Internet for parenting because not everything you find on the Internet is accurate I use 1 800 CHILDREN because I really like to talk to a person and know that it is a reliable source of information Cynthia our 2019 Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference to two days with a larger audience to have more depth and greater reach so that even more people will have the 40 000 children at 160 schools learned how to keep safe from and report sexual abuse
