4Why you need a personalized estate planLife insurance: A smart solutionThere are many ways life insurance can financially help families with specialneeds children: Several factors make developing and implementing apersonalized estate plan particularly important forfamilies with special needs children:People are living longer Care resources need to lastThe court could make care decisions if you don’tAs a caregiver, if you do not outline who will fulfill caretaking responsibilities, yourchild could become a ward of the court when you die. Once this happens, thecourt decides who cares for them and how financial support will be provided.Life expectancy for adults with disabilities continues to increase. Not only mustparents and guardians financially prepare for the rest of their own lives, theymust also factor in the life of their child with special needs.Your child may qualify for federal and state government programs, such as SocialSecurity Income (SSI) and Medicaid, which provide resources for basic care andliving needs. However, there are very strict income limitations. These resourcesmay not be enough to maintain the standard of living you want for your child.Private funding can help, but careful planning is needed to ensure their incomewill last a lifetime.• The tax-free death benefit can provide financial support to ensure thelifestyle you have created for your family remains intact even after you’re gone.• Cash value can be a valuable tool for current and future costs of raising a childwith special needs. The cash value has the potential to grow tax-deferred andbecome a source of cash to supplement future financial needs.• Additional agreements may enhance your life insurance policy to addresseach of your goals – from providing for your own care to customizing the deathbenefit payout.

Legal Services in New Jersey embraces the vision of fullaccess to essential civil legal aid for all economicallydisadvantaged people who cannot secure a lawyer ontheir own. This belief in the importance of legalassistance to indigent people stems from an underlyingconcern with fairness, and a conviction that importantlegal needs of individuals should be addressed. The Legal Services program must maintain a principalfocus on meeting these basic needs even as it strivesto pursue actions that have import and sweep beyondthe individual parties in specific legal cases. It mustprioritize legal representation that will help rebuildimpoverished, deteriorating communities, or thataddress recurrent problems that otherwise wouldcontinue to occur in the lives of low-income people.https://www.lsnj.org/index.aspx(732) 572-9100
