Embodying the excellence ofearly modern dance, the program opens with Doris Humphrey’scaptivating solo, Two Ecstatic Themes, followed by Limón'smasterful retelling of Gethsemane in The Traitor. After a 45 year hiatus, Limón’s playful drumming quartet Scherzoreturns to the stage alongside the monumental Missa Brevis, apoignant tribute to resilience amidst the ruins of war. Newlycommissioned by the Limón Dance Company, a world premiereby award-winning choreographer Kayla Farrish enthralls with areimagining of two lost Limón works. Costume design will be byMárion Talán de la Rosa and music will be composed by Farrish’slong-time collaborator Alex MacKinnon. Two Ecstatic ThemesA choreographic masterpiece by Doris Humphrey, Two EcstaticThemes embodies the excellence of early modern dance, delvingdeep into the human experience through movement. The dance,a solo in two parts, exemplifies Humphrey's fascination with therichness of the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy. The sinking, spiraling movements of “Circular Descent” convey an emotionalfeeling of acquiescence, while “Pointed Ascent” shows thedancer's aggressive achievement through sharp, angularmovements. This solo work not only captivates viewers with itsexpressiveness but marks a turning point in Humphrey'schoreographic life, cementing her role as a prominentchoreographer and theorist in the field.Premiere date: 1931 - Washington Irving High SchoolMusic: Nicholas Medtner, G. Francesco MalipieroTwo Ecstatic Themes by Doris Humphrey delves deep into theduality of the human experience, exploring the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy. Through the contrasting movements of“Circular Descent” and “Pointed Ascent,” Humphrey captures theessence of acquiescence and achievement, making it a pivotalwork in early modern dance.LIMÓN DANCE COMPANY AT THE JOYCE THEATERNOVEMBER 5-10, 2024OPENING NIGHT: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2024 AT 7:30PMLIMÓN DANCE COMPANY AT THE JOYCE THEATERNOVEMBER 5-10, 2024OPENING NIGHT: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2024 AT 7:30PMLimon Dance Company - dancers Jessica Sgambelluri - Joey Columbus - Mariah Gravelin - Deepa Liegel - Nicholas Ruscica - photo Hisae AiharaLimon Dance Company - dancers JessicaSgambelluri - photo Hisae Aihara_HA05581SPANGLISH ENTERTAINMENT NEWS6 |

Kayla Farrish Project (November 2024 Premiere)A new creation by Bessie Awardee Kayla Farrish that examines twothematically aligned works by José Limón. Redes (Nets) (1951) is arepresentation of collective work and unity, and El Grito (TheScream) (1952) is an awakening of consciousness. Farrish is apowerful new voice in the field. Her multi-disciplinary work has beenrecognized by Sundance, the New York Times, and the HarknessPromise Award. With roots as an African American woman from thesouth, Farrish’s work is deeply connected to the displacement ofcolored bodies and a continuous seeking for identity andcommunity - themes Limón was exploring 70+ years ago. Farrish’scommission speaks to this conversation, using archival photos andwritings to examine these two lost Limón works which explored hisidentity as an artist of color. Her new work comments on thesethemes and shares her perspective on a community working inunity towards freedom and awakening the collective consciousness– creating a conversation between Limón and Farrish, connectingthe past and the future Co-commissioning support from American Dance Festival and earlyresidency support provided by Vanderbilt University Blair School ofMusic, and Kaatsbaan Cultural Park.Missa BrevisJosé Limón’s ‘Symphonic’ Masterpiece is a celebration of thehuman spirit. Inspired by the fortitude and resilience of the Polishpeople following the devastation of WWII, Limón was impressed bytheir willingness to forgive those who had tried to bury them. It is amonumental tribute to resilience in the aftermath of war, showcasing the strength and spirit of the human condition. Thispiece stands as a testament to endurance and hope amidstdestruction. The 2024 reconstruction celebrates the 65th Anniversary of MissaBrevis, with Reconstructors Kathryn Alter and Kurt Douglas incollaboration and includes a remastered recording of ZoltanKodály's "Missa Brevis en Tempore Belli" ("Short Mass in Time ofWar").“Missa Brevis, the all-too-relevant centerpiece, where this classicmodern dance troupe reaffirmed its founder’s deep commitment tohumanity and peace. Few images in dance are as stirring andmeaningful as the scene in Missa Brevis in which the huddled massof dancers sink down, clasping hands, their faces lifted to the sky.”Robert Johnson, NJArts 2024Premiere date: 1958 The Juilliard SchoolMusic: Zoltán KodályThe TraitorOne of modern dance’s most significant works of the 1950s, TheTraitor was José Limón’s response to the McCarthy hearings and theclimate of betrayal that haunted the arts and entertainment fieldsduring this period. Against Gunther Schuller’s musical score ofviolence, passion, and tenderness, the tragedy of Judas and thetheme of betrayal are eloquently portrayed. Created for eight men,the work will make its World Premiere featuring a mixed-gender cast. With wonderfully vibrant movement, lush musicality and hauntingimages, this relevant work illuminates how we betray ourselves andour beliefs, and what that can do to each of us. Premiere date: 1954 - American Dance FestivalMusic: Gunther SchullerThe Traitor offers a powerful reminder of the importance ofmaintaining one’s beliefs and values in the face of ideologicalconflicts. This premiere with mixed-gender casting not only reflectsour commitment to inclusivity and diversity but also highlights theuniversality of these themes. “This season, we invite you to reflect onthe significance of your civic duty. Voting is not just a right, but aresponsibility, and by participating in the democratic process, we canall contribute to shaping a more inclusive and resilient society. Takethis opportunity to make your voice heard in the upcoming electionsand then join me for an evening of profound artistic expression” saidDante Puleio, Artistic Director, Limón Dance Company.ScherzoThis energetic, athletic dance originally created for four men and adrum tossed between them is a compelling exploration of rhythm andmovement. In moments when the percussion score stops, themovement—the beats the dancers create on their bodies—becomesthe music.Premiere date: 1955 - American Dance FestivalMusic: Hazel Johnson“A dance in three parts that began with a trio of men in a vigorous, athleticdisplay of prowess; a solo with a male performer performing on a drum whiledancing; a quartet of men dancing with a drum while they leapt, spun, racedand tossed the drum about as if in a basketball game.” Walter Terry, NY TimesLIMÓN DANCE COMPANY AT THE JOYCE THEATER, CONT’DLIMÓN DANCE COMPANY AT THE JOYCE THEATER, CONT’DSPANGLISH ENTERTAINMENT NEWS | 7

(Family Features) Annual checkups are an importantstep in protecting your child’s eye health and vision, but families tend to see the eye doctor less regularlythan their primary care doctor, pediatrician or dentist. This year, ZEISS Vision Care commissioned a studythat found only 47% of parents reported taking theirchildren to an optometrist annually, but 78% saw theirprimary care doctor each year and 71% made a trip tothe dentist. The study also revealed 82% of parentswith kids ages 18 and younger are concerned abouttheir children experiencing digital eyestrain from usingelectronics.Parents in the survey reported a variety of behaviors toprotect their children’s eyes, including screen timebreaks and using glasses, including those with bluelight and ultraviolet (UV) ray blocking features.Learn how you can protect your child’s eye health withthese tips from the experts at ZEISS.Don’t wait for your child to complain about fuzzyvision. Kids’ eye muscles are adaptable, making it possible forthem to have functional vision even when they need ahigh degree of refractive correction fornearsightedness or farsightedness. Often, kids don’trealize better vision is even possible until they have athorough exam.MAKE PROTECTING KIDS’EYE HEALTH A PRIORITYWatch for signs of poor vision.Although your child may not directly complain abouthaving trouble seeing, you may notice symptoms thatdon’t necessarily equate to vision. Headaches andburning causing itching and rubbing the eyes aresymptoms that may be attributed to allergies or othercauses. Dry eyes and tearing are also symptoms ofvision strain. You might find your child squinting orholding objects close or farther away. Sometimes alack of interest in reading or difficulty concentrating arealso related to vision.Look for kid-friendly corrective eyewear. The shape of the face, distance between the eyes andother proportions gradually change as childrendevelop, which influences the position of eyeglasslenses. In addition, the pupil diameter increases inchildren and young people while it shrinks again inadults. This means lenses designed for adults aren’tnecessarily well-suited for children. Options like ZEISSSingle Vision SmartLife Young lenses are speciallyadapted to the anatomy and lifestyle of growingchildren. Individual, continuously changing parameters, such as the distance between the eyes, are integratedinto the lens design. As a result, they provide up to60% wider fields of clear view along with full, sunglass-level UV protection in thin, lightweight lenses that canbe customized with blue light protection and scratch-resistant coatings that are aesthetically pleasing. Protect eyes from potential risks.Require kids to wear protective eyewear whenparticipating in activities, like certain sports, that couldharm their eyes. Sunglasses make it easier to see inbright sunlight, but they also protect the eyes fromharmful UV rays.Schedule annual exams. Checking in with your child’seye doctor each year is essential for protecting eyehealth and vision. If your child wears glasses, verifyinghis or her prescription is still appropriate is important. Ifnot, it’s still a good idea to monitor for changes.“As a mom and eye care professional, I understandfirsthand the importance of taking care of yourchildren’s eye health now so they maintain healthyvision later in life,” said Dr. Jennifer Wademan, OD. QiensaveThe Salinas, CA based Cumbia Urbanagroup, ¿Qiensave? is proud to announcetheir newest album, a collaborative projectwith El Dusty titled “Reanimación.”Kicking off the project is the lead single“Quemayama” featuring new lyrics by theBay Area based hip-hop artist DeuceEclipse; it is out now and everywhere youstream music. The band met the Corpus Christi basedplatinum producer, DJ and musician ElDusty during their show in 2021. Fromthat fortuitous meeting came about theidea to collaborate. Although initialcollaboration efforts were delayed due toother projects, the idea of remixing someof their most beloved tracks never faded.Fast forward to mid-2023, when the starsaligned, the collaboration was reignitedand “Reanimación” was born. We met with Dusty and as we talked about the project Dustysaid, this is like Linkin Park's “Reanimation” album, I knew then itwas magic. It connected with the vision and conversation ofbringing new life to these great songs and that's how the namewas gifted to us.”“Reanimación” includes a remix of the standout single “ParaPoderte Olvidar,” Carlos explains, “Dusty really just took ‘ParaPoderte Olvidar’ on a trip in all the sense and infused it with hisjedi powers and took it to another world. We were all literallyblown away, El Dusty dont fuck around.” Alex adds, “This wasthe first song we heard for the project and it blew us away. AsDusty created this moonbap, Hip-hop, dubstep, drum n bass, roller coaster ride of a track .” Their 2022 EP title track “El After,”was the second song that El Dusty remixed with Carloscommenting, “El Dusty took ‘El After’ to the after after partygiving it that all night club vibe – for those ready to go all night!”With “La Fuga” off Mujer, the remix adds straight dance floorvibes that hype up the already rock laden song. Anotherstandout is the heavy bass driven trap remix of ¿Qiensave?’scover of the Chico Che classic “Mata de Mota” featuring TopaMagica. A song created for subwoofers and cruising culture! In support of "Reanimación," ¿Qiensave? will be hitting the roadwith a series of live performances that promise to be asexhilarating as the album itself. The band originally covered the PatricioHidalgo y el Afrojarocho song “Quemayama” for their 2022 EPEl After, to which they added elements of cumbia and Afro-Cuban percussion. With the remix version, the song is onceagain reimagined as it leans into a nu-cumbia fusion as DeuceEclipse spits over boom-bap influenced basslines.Alex recalls, “We both (deuce and us) talked a few times aboutdoing a track together. Carlos and I found the song for him, which was the “Para Poderte Olvidar” remix. However, insteadof sending Deuce PPO, I sent Deuce “Quemayama.” He lovedit, a week later he was sending us the verses for the track. Hewas telling me that this was the perfect song at that time, as hehad a lot to say, as the lyrics and the beat spoke to him.Maybe it was meant to be like this.” Carlos adds, “ at first, asanyone, we were little hesitant or more a mix of uncertaintyand curious of how “Quemayama” would play out being thateven when we did our rendition it was interesting to hear it in anew light always a fun surprise, it's the power of “Quemayama”sharing its blessing through different walks of life. Once weheard what EL Dusty did, we knew this whole project wasgonna be fire, a blessing from the universe.”The new album breathes new life into these original songsby remixing and evolving select tracks from ¿Qiensave?’s2022 EP EL After, 2019 album Mujer, and the single "ParaPoderte Olvidar." The collaboration between ¿Qiensave?and the nu-cumbia powerhouse El Dusty has marked abold evolution for these songs by bringing a newdimension and adding guest features to the alreadycontagious sound.
