Message 2024 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITYmaking morepossiblethrough the power of collective giving.
Betsy W. Covington President & CEORodney K. Mahone 2024 Chair, Board of TrusteesAs the Community Foundation marks 26 years as a “Foundation for Good,” we celebrate the impact we’ve made possible so far and are excited by what’s ahead. Truly, we make MORE possible for our donors, grantees, and community: 1. Donors appreciate a local “center for thoughtful philanthropy” with sta expertise that leads and connects them with eorts they care about in their own communities. This year we received more than 1,930 gifts totaling $43 million and made 1,928 grants totaling $47 million. More than 20 private foundations have now “re-established themselves” as Donor Advised Funds to take advantage of our operational expertise, bringing our total number of active Funds to 323.2. Collective giving leverages an economy of scale that multiplies long-term and endowed charitable assets over time. Since we began, we have received contributions of $498 million and have made grants of $307 million, and our investments have increased our community’s net philanthropic value by more than $156 million.3. A community-focused organization that embraces collaboration can create connections and leverage the work of community nonprofits for better, broader decision-making and impact. Our leadership with other community partners to drive eorts like Columbus 2025, The Basics’ tools for early learning (cv.thebasics.org), Home for Good, CHIPS4CHIPS, area nonprofit leadership training, and conversations about strengthening local news availability exemplify the breadth of involvement donors foster by giving through CFCV.4. We are dedicated to doing this work right. And our Founder’s Society Endowment allows CFCV to operate sustainably, eectively, and exceptionally, while holding fees low. We have been certified by the Community Foundations National Standards Board as having operations that meet or exceed National Operating Standards for U.S. Community Foundations since 2006, when we were among the first 150 community foundations to achieve the then-new designation.By the time you read this in spring 2025, we’ll be beginning our move to the 1905 Coca-Cola Bottling Company building at 1147 6th Avenue in Columbus. This historic, beautifully renovated building aords us a much larger home for convening our community partners! We look forward to welcoming you for a tour.If we’re already helping you do MORE through CFCV, thank you for the opportunity. If this idea is new to you, enjoy the stories on these pages to learn about our work… and let us know if we can help you become part of it!Making morecommunity possible

Brandon Peak is originally from Gastonia, North Carolina; his wife Brooke is from Coee County, deep in the heart of south Georgia. But when they came to Columbus, they knew they were home.“Columbus is the most benevolent community that we’ve ever lived in,” says Brandon, a partner at the law firm of Peak Wooten McDaniel & Colwell LLP. “The things that have been accomplished here through private-public partnerships and through philanthropy are amazing. We have had a lot of mentors and very positive examples of people doing great things with the blessings bestowed upon them.”As Brandon and Brooke got established in Columbus and began reaping the rewards of career success, they decided it was time to join that philanthropic tradition. One of Brandon’s law partners had a Fund at the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley; based on his positive experience, the Peaks set up the Brandon and Brooke Peak Family Fund at CFCV in 2016.Trying to administer a family foundation on his own, Brandon says, would be more than he could deal with. But having the support and expertise of the Community Foundation has allowed the Peaks to grow their investment more quickly and consistently than Brandon says he could do on his own. The Community Foundation has also made it possible to distribute those funds more eciently, and more widely—everywhere from their church to youth-oriented organizations such as Young Life and the YMCA.“When we are interested in making a donation from the Fund, it’s really as easy as going onto the Community Foundation website and requesting a grant, or sending them an email and saying, ‘We’d like to do X, Y, or Z.’ And within a matter of weeks, or even days, it’s done. From an administrative standpoint, it really couldn’t be any easier. It’s actually easier than writing a check or trying to transfer stock out of an account.”And when the act of philanthropy is made that simple, it’s easier to get other people involved—like one’s own family. Brandon says he and Brooke regularly involve their four kids—aged 17, 15, 11, and 11—in discussions about where their money should go, potentially broadening the impact of their giving across generations.“One of the things that this has been helpful in doing is teaching our kids about the importance of helping others,” Brandon says. “We can talk about things as a family that we’re interested in doing and the importance of giving back when God’s blessed us with the ability to do that.”“We really believe it’s important for them to think about how to lift up other folks in their community. Financial donations are just one way—there are a lot of other ways people can do that—but the Community Foundation has helped us make them a part of that process so we can talk about the things that they’re interested in and how to make a dierence.”Making moregenerosity possibleThe Brandon and Brooke Peak Family Fund
Making morelocal impact possibleThe Suzanne F. and Edward C. Burdeshaw FundSuzanne and Ed Burdeshaw have been in Columbus for 60 years, so they’ve witnessed a lot of change in the Chattahoochee Valley. But Ed hasn’t just seen it—as a partner at Hecht Burdeshaw Architects, Inc., he’s helped create it. His firm has been involved in the design of everything from the Columbus Public Library and National Infantry Museum to the Riverwalk and other streetscapes that helped revitalize Columbus’ downtown.Ed is now retired, but he and Suzanne are still making an impact on the Columbus area—through both their civic leadership and the Suzanne F. and Edward C. Burdeshaw Fund, which they established as a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley in 2015.“As I talked to people about the Community Foundation, it was obvious that it could expand our giving in the Columbus area for any charitable cause,” Ed says. “So we decided that we wanted to start a Fund that would grow and increase our giving potential. We started putting in a set amount each year, and we have watched it grow both from our contributions and the growth of the Fund itself.”Early on, the Burdeshaws decided to split their giving evenly between children and adults in need and the city’s arts and cultural organizations. That strategy has created impact across a wide range of causes. On the cultural side, they’ve supported the Springer Opera House, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, Columbus Museum, and several others. On the other side, they’ve given generously to organizations fighting hunger and promoting reading for kids.Suzanne, a retired teacher and self-described “bibliomaniac,” is an especially big believer in Columbus’ libraries as a way to put kids on the path to success in education and life. “I’m a big, big fan of the library,” she says. “It has such marvelous programs, and I volunteer in the library store once a week. I just think reading makes all the dierence in the world to children, so I’m really passionate about things that support that.”The Community Foundation has aided the Burdeshaws by growing their Fund consistently—faster than Ed says he would’ve been able to do it himself. And with CFCV handling the bookkeeping, they can make gifts large or small virtually whenever they like. “And the older we get, the more helpful it is,” Suzanne adds. Not only that, their Fund is an Endowed Fund, meaning it will exist in perpetuity.“Our children will be able to contribute as they become the Advisors of the Fund,” Ed explains. “When we made the decision to invest in the Fund, we got our children together and told them that we were going to try to put X amount of money in it so that at the end, when we died and they become the Advisors, they would understand what our goals were and how to continue working toward them. And all of our giving has been in Columbus, because we feel like Columbus has been good to us, and there’s a lot of need here. There’s no need to go anyplace else.”
Since its founding as a shelter in 1963, Valley Rescue Mission in Columbus has expanded to provide longer-term housing for the homeless, residential addiction recovery programs for men and women, and emergency shelter for abused women and their children. And its thrift stores, which now number three locations, have become a local institution. But as popular as the thrift stores are with area residents across the economic spectrum, they only provide a little over half of Valley Rescue Mission’s funding—the organization depends on the community’s generosity for the rest. In 1999, lifelong Columbus resident Martha Stratford Turner stepped up to answer that call in an important and enduring way: she created the Martha Turner Valley Rescue Mission Fund, one of the earliest Funds established at the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley.“Mrs. Turner had been a longtime supporter of Valley Rescue Mission and came to me with a strong interest in providing long-term financial support for the organization’s programming,” remembers Charles T. (Chuck) Staples, a longtime estate planning attorney practicing at Hall Booth Smith, PC. “Establishing a Designated Fund at the Community Foundation was a great way to help her achieve that objective. It’s good to know that, even long after her lifetime, that fund continues to do exactly what she hoped it would do.”Unless you’re an expert, long-term money management can be a significant challenge, says Betsy Covington, CFCV’s president & CEO. “You have to have an investment policy, a committee that can oversee it, and a manager whom you trust to help you measure results so that it’s consistently managed well. That’s what the Community Foundation provides for organizations that are looking for long-term management of endowment funds or other types of long-term assets—and for donors who want to make sure the organizations and causes they care about can be well-supported. The best part: by having this kind of back oce that pools the assets and manages them well, CFCV is generating additional philanthropic capital for the community—more than $150 million in net value since we started.”Since it was created, Martha Turner’s Fund has made 24 annual general support grants to Valley Rescue Mission—even as the investment earnings have generated a net philanthropic value of more than
68 percent of Mrs. Turner’s contribution. It adds up to a funding source that is substantial, consistent, and permanent—an absolute godsend for a charitable organization like the Valley Rescue Mission, says Mike Gaymon, VRM’s president and CEO.“Donations and support like the kind Mrs. Turner established helps support our shelters,” he explains. “The people in our shelters paid zero to enter, so we have to provide all the things that you would need if you were living in your own home—power bill, water, food, all those things.”That regular support has become even more critical in recent years as VRM has expanded its scope, not only providing temporary shelter and addiction recovery for people in crisis, but preparing them to live sustainable, purposeful, independent lives once they leave. That preparation includes everything from employment assistance and résumé help to immunization and school placement for kids. Through a partnership with Columbus Technical College, VRM can also help people get high-school diplomas or professional certifications—all without having to pay a dime.“The support from Mrs. Turner is also helping us provide transportation for those men and women to get to Columbus Tech,” Gaymon mentions. “That’s the kind of place where donations make a direct impact on people’s lives.”Other examples of the impact the Turner Fund has helped make possible at VRM include 180,000 meals served, 7,000 clothing vouchers, 3,900 bags of groceries, and 49,000 nights of lodging last year alone. But the eects keep rippling out from there. “How many crimes have not been committed? How many houses have not been broken into, how many things have not happened because we’ve got 80 men and women who are living with us [in addiction recovery] and trying to get their lives all put back together?” Gaymon asks. “But again, it takes dollars—to hire sta, to pay the light bill, to provide food, to provide transportation, all the things it takes to live.” Gaymon is grateful to Martha Turner for those dollars—even though she never cared whether anyone knew they were coming from her. “She wanted no credit or recognition, she didn’t seek publicity, she didn’t seek a pat on the back. She just wanted to put her resources where they could impact people’s lives. And wow, isn’t that pretty special?”Making morepermanent support possibleThe Martha Turner Valley Rescue Mission Fund
Dr. Jack Hughston’s name is virtually synonymous with sports medicine. Known for pioneering the role of the team doctor with Auburn’s football program, he became so influential that he helped convince the NFL to ban the “crack-back” block. Sports Illustrated cited him as one of the top three surgeons in his field in 1977. The Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital he opened in Columbus in 1984, the first facility of its kind in the U.S., continues to carry a world-class reputation.Clearly, Hughston was a man of expansive vision. He believed the principles and discoveries of sports medicine had important benefits not only for elite athletes, but for regular people far and wide. Similarly, he and his wife created the Sarah H. and Jack C. Hughston Foundation in 1993 not only to support the eorts of the Hughston clinic network, but to improve the quality of life for people throughout Columbus, through several local and regional organizations, including recent projects with the Columbus Museum and St. Paul Church. An expansive vision can create great change, but it also takes a lot of manpower to execute. So in 2022, the foundation’s board re-established it as a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley. That way, the former foundation board could still oversee grantmaking as Fund advisors, while delegating the complex work of compliance and financial management to an organization with considerable experience and expertise.“The Hughston Foundation board was attracted to the professional sta of the Community Foundation to assist us with the day-to-day administrative tasks of running our own foundation,” says Mason Lampton, chairman emeritus of Standard Concrete Products and chair of the Hughston Fund’s advisory committee. “We wanted to continue honoring Jack and Sarah’s wishes to benefit their favorite charities in this community, but needed some help to do so. We were also impressed with their investment performance, which should help this Fund continue for many years to come.”Not only did CFCV help the new Hughston Fund deal with its existing tasks, it brought new benefits to the table. “The Community Foundation helped us formulate legitimate grant solicitation, review, approval, and reporting processes that we never had before,” Lampton explains. “This process really streamlined our group’s eorts and our focus to make the most ecient use of our time and resources to make an even larger impact on the community.”
With its grantmaking capabilities supercharged, the Hughston Fund has been able to proceed full speed ahead with a number of exciting projects—chief among them support for development of a translational research lab at the Jack Hughston-established Hughston Foundation, Inc., known worldwide for training, education, and research in orthopedics and sports medicine. According to Dr. Kurt Jacobson, who recently retired as president of the Hughston Clinic, the Hughston Foundation, Inc., is placing more focus on the kind of “bench-to-bedside” research that can quickly be turned into improved clinical treatment and better outcomes.“We have extremely specialized equipment working on research on a number of topics, but one of the most important is accurate and rapid detection of infection,” Jacobson oers as one example. “Traditionally, with infection, you have to wait for the wound or site to look bad, then you either biopsy or culture it, and you wait for the results.” But by using calorimetrics, which can detect physical changes by measuring heat signal profiles, “you can actually detect infection much earlier and monitor the treatment. There’s a lot of research being done on that with the potential to really revolutionize the way we treat infection.”Led by Dr. Kyle Cichos, a UAB-trained immunologist specializing in orthopedic surgery research, the lab is also pursuing advances that could help clinicians not only manage arthritis better, but detect it early and prevent it from getting worse. The lab is “a great project for the Hughston Foundation, Inc.,” Jacobson says. “It’s a great project for the hospital; it’s a great project for the city of Columbus; it’s a great project for orthopedics; and it’s certainly synchronized with the mission of the Community Foundation in terms of wanting to make life better for the community. This work will make life better not just for people of our community, but for a much wider audience.”Jack Hughston’s legacy as a surgeon, researcher, and pioneer was secure long before he and Sarah set up their foundation. What they had in mind was an even greater legacy—one of community service and discovery that could change lives in Columbus and far beyond—long after their lifetimes. With the help of the Community Foundation, Mason Lampton says, that legacy, too, is assured.“By joining forces with the Community Foundation,” Lampton states, “our board believes we have ensured continuity of the Fund and its financial impact on many of Dr. Hughston’s passions for generations to come.”Making morecharitable legacy possibleThe Sarah H. and Jack C.
