A NATIONAL PROBLEM A CALL FOR QUALITY SUMMER PROGRAMS 1 in 4 children in summer programs are low income Hispanic children make up only 16 of children enrolled in summer programs Only 3 of summer programs are STEM programs and less than 1 of STEM campers are low income 25 16 3 A LOCAL SOLUTION CO OP SUMMER ENRICHMENT 93 85 43 93 of Co Op 2021 campers are low income receiving free or reduced lunch Co Op 2021 campers are 85 Hispanic 6 Multiracial 4 Black 4 White 1 Asian 43 of instructional time at Co Op is hands on STEM learning
MORE TIME FOR LEARNING AND FUN Co Op Summer Enrichment is a research based program that blends high quality learning experiences with the exuberance of summer fun in order to mitigate summer slide Our 5 week program is packed with critical STEM skills alongside core reading and math practice 10 80 Co Op is important for our family because it is fun 92 All children participated in 10 one week STEM projects 15 hours weekly 2021 Co Op Campers voted these STEM Majors their favorite project based learning YESS Young Engineers Building Strong Stable Structures It s Electric STEM Superheros Pix Pro Digital Photography Mosaic Madness 80 of parents indicated that the main reason they chose Co Op was so that their child could continue learning during the summer 92 of campers said that attending Co Op will make them a better student when they go back to school in September and educational for my kids They also got to spend time with other kids and make new friends Co Op Parent 42 Young Adult counselors and lifeguards received a minimum of 42 hours of training in areas like child development behavior management job skills leadership development
When the water was rising we climbed on tables and my aunt and mom were scared because they don t know how to swim But I wasn t scared because I know how to swim CRITICAL TIME FOR SWIMMING because of Co Op Co Op Camper Ida flood victim 71 29 3X 71 of Co Op Parents voted swimming as the top rated skill their child learned at Co Op 29 of campers were independent swimmers by program close versus only 19 at the start of the summer Children who attended 2 or more summers at Co Op are 3x as likely to end the summer as independent swimmers
PROVIDING MORE ROLE MODELS Mentorship is at the center of our work at Co Op Providing mentorship for all campers and employees makes everyone feel included and accepted Our rituals from our t shirts to the Co Op Awards ceremonies from Color Wars to our Ice Cream Bombing tradition create a camp culture that clearly signals that we belong together in a shared Co Op community Role models are not just for kids Our Educators received 17 hours of coaching from the NY Hall of Science Team MULTI LAYERED MENTORING NY Hall of Science STEM Coach provided 1 to 1 professional development for all educators After weeks of using different strategies and techniques the counselor I was mentoring really grew in his work He consistently kept his kindness but became someone who could lead his campers Co Op Professional Educator Each educator was paired with a Young Educator and advised them in curriculum instruction All Counselors received a full week of leadership training and 3 written pieces of feedback CAMPERS LEADERS IN TRAINING RISE COUNSELORS YOUNG EDUCATORS EDUCATORS STEM COACH Counselors and RISE LIT s provided near peer care oversight of all campers in small group settings

RISE is a leader in training program for 7th 8th graders RESPONSIBILITY INDEPENDENCE THROUGH SUMMER ENRICHMENT RISE kids participate in 25 hours of interactive leadership training and serve as counselor assistants 100 86 100 of RISE Leaders in training agreed or strongly agreed that RISE helped them develop leadership skills 86 of RISE LITs indicated they want to return next summer RISE LITs created and led interactive orientation activities for incoming 6th graders including Locker Challenges Hommocks Mapping Time Trials Peer FAQ Sessions For my oldest child there were no other programs for his age and with Covid and hybrid learning the previous school year he needed the RISE program I m so grateful for it Parent of RISE Leader in Training Student FACT ONLY 7 OF SUMMER PROGRAMS SERVE KIDS OVER THE AGE OF 13
CREATING MORE OPPORTUNITIES SCHOOL YEAR CONNECTIONS Research shows that building Covid resilience in kids and preventing summer slide depends on creating MORE OPPORTUNITIES to learn As a District program Co Op creates critical links to the school year through staffing being based in a school facility partnerships with other school staff and learning enrichment combined with summer fun 25 HRS 60 HRS 100 All campers had 25 hours of reading practice and 25 hours of math academic reinforcement with an educator The emphasis was on both hands on and digital games for fun Over the summer all campers engaged in 60 hours of hands on STEM learning with high quality materials including digital cameras cement mixing tools geology specimens LEDs batteries and self made 3D glasses 100 of Professional Staff agreed or strongly agreed that Co Op programming integrates extends and or complements school year activities
