An investigation into dustmites, just one of the many harmful pollutants our ﬁlters remove from your indoor air.POLLUTANT PSAPOLLUTANT PSA: THE DREADFUL DUST MITEWHAT EXACTLY ARE DUST MITES? Dust mites are insect-like pests that are actually too small to spot with the naked eye. Some people mistake them for parasites, but these mites do not bite or ﬁnd their way into our bodies. Instead, they trigger allergic reactions for many people. This comes from inhaling particles of dust mites or their excrement. Dust mites survive by eating skin cells that have been shed by people. Unfortunately, with so many people being allergic or having an asthmatic reaction to them, dust mites can be a big problem, triggering itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, post-nasal drip, congestion, and more.HOW CAN I GET RID OF THEM?The best way to remove dust mites is by washing as much of your bedding, curtains and upholstery as you can in hot water that’s over the temperature of 130°F (54°C). This will eectively kill the mites and their eggs. You can also wrap your mattress and pillows in allergen-proof encasements to create a stronger barrier between your respiratory system and the mites. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) actually suggests that pillows should be replaced every two years for this reason. Regularly dusting surfaces with a damp cloth is another way to pick up mites before they become particles in the air that you’d breathe in.
