a weekend for foster & adoptive momsA FOSTER THE FAMILY EVENTJANUARY 31-FEBRUARY 2, 2025 LANCASTER, PA
Dear Sister,It's my favorite weekend of the year! If you’ve joined us for Filled before, I pray that you are prayerfullyanticipating a sweet time with your Father and sisters, as I hope you've experienced in the past. If youhaven’t joined us before, I want to share with you a couple of pillars of Filled that guide all of our preparationto hopefully guide your participation:We believe in the power of community, the gift of gathering like-minded mothers for a sacred time of beingseen and known. I hope you take advantage of every opportunity to connect, share, learn, and pray with theother moms you meet.We believe that God loves to refresh and restore and bless his daughters–through rest and laughter, foodand fun. He wants us to walk out our motherhood dependent, but not depleted. I pray that this weekend fuelsyou for what He's called you to.We believe in the power of the gospel to transform our hearts and lives. I pray that you are educated &equipped for your journey, but mostly, I pray that you encounter the living God in a way that sustains &strengthens you far beyond our few days together and through the joys and trials of your every day.We are all living in the tension of the "and" of foster care, adoption, &kinship care. We understand that nothing on this journey is ever onlyone thing. Mothering another woman's child is, at once, broken &beautiful, full of joy & heartbreak. We experience grief & gratitude, our children experience loss & gain, and all of the other "ands" of oureveryday go on & on & on. This weekend, we are going to seek God’spromises & presence in the mist of all of our “ands,” and I amconfident He will meet us as we pursue Him together.I think we've gathered the dream team to bless your socks off thisweekend. *AND* we are completely dependent on God to do the realwork that lasts far beyond our short time together. So my deepestprayer–for this weekend and far beyond–is that you may know Hisknowledge-surpassing love for you and be filled with all the fullnessof God.Love, 11

START YOUR DAY WITH JESUSAs for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in whichyou used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of theruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work inthose who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at onetime, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desiresand thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, madeus alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it isby grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ andseated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in orderthat in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches ofhis grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is bygrace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not fromyourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one canboast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to dogood works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.Ephesians 2:10Ask me to define myself in a word, and I’d be tempted to say “mom.” But I’d be wrong. The best definition takes only one word: daughter.Nothing that I do is the most important thing about me as a child of God. And (foster/adoptive/biological) parenting is something that I do. It is not who I am. When I put my actions before my identity, I am building on a changeable, faulty foundation. The only completely constant, unchangeable and unchanging, irremovable andunflinching part of me? That I am His. And this is what is most reliable about me.Why?88
Because it is based on Him and not me. He is constant. His grace isunchangeable and His mercy is unchanging. His adoption of me is irremovableand His love for me is unflinching. Who I am is, simply put, based on who He israther than who I am.Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we were created to do good works. But you simply cannot consider the meaning of Ephesians 2:10 without the richverses that precede and define and inform it. (Please open your Bible & read them now!)We were created and commissioned by God to do things for Him and for othersthat are so eternal, they were prepared before we were even born. This is big news. But preceding this commission is a reminder of our identity:We were dead (v. 1).We were loved, with great love (v. 4).We were made alive and one with Christ (v. 5).We were saved to exalt the riches of His grace (v. 7).We had nothing to do with our salvation. It is a gift of grace from God (v. 8–9).The full gospel message of this passage is absolutely crucial to the“good works” battle cry we pull from it. We must guard against putting theproverbial foster-care-and-adoption-mission cart before the saved-by-grace-alone horse. We are on a mission—a grand and glorious, eternal mission.Spending up your days loving and serving our children is good, good work. Andgood works are important—we were created to do them! But good works mustproceed from what precedes them. Namely, our identity in Him. Our works arenot what define us, not what identify us, and they never save us. The savingwork is His, and it’s only ever “the gift of God, not a result of works” (v. 8–9). You are called to do for Him, but first and foremost, you are His.99START YOUR DAY WITH JESUS

START YOUR DAY WITH JESUSThere’s a crowd, gathered and arguing. When Jesus approaches, they “weregreatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him” (v. 15). A man emerges fromthe crowd with his son who is possessed by a demon. The father is desperate forhis suffering son and begs Jesus to have compassion and help “if” He can. Jesus is incensed by the man’s lack of faith and exclaims, “If?!” The man’sreaction is desperate and frantic. I feel this so deeply. My immediate snapreaction, what spills out quickly and without thought, is the fear andfaithlessness bubbling beneath the surface. Those are more convincing andmore consuming. They tempt me with their pleading lies and lure me to set up my heart’s camp right in the center of them. They tempt me to half-heartedly ask Jesus to help “if” He can. Deep down in my heart, you know what I believe? I believe that God has writtenall the days of my family in His book and is writing a very good story for thegroup of us. I believe that He will accomplish His good plan in the lives of mykids. I believe that He is a God who is capable of miracles. I believe that Hispower has no bounds and knows no end. I believe that He always operates in Hisperfect love and wisdom and goodness. But right alongside those beliefs—wrapping its strangling tendrils around myfaith—is the unbelief that survives. 1919“Teacher, I brought my son to you...If you can do anything, havecompassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! Allthings are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father ofthe child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”...Jesus took[the boy] by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.Mark 9:17, 22–24, 27 ESV
START YOUR DAY WITH JESUS“Foster care and adoption are ruining my family. Everything is out of control. A goodGod would never let this happen. They’ll never change. I can’t do this anymore.”What I see threatens to shrink my faith, and that is why faith is explicitly connectedto “what we do not see” (Heb. 11:1)—namely, God’s unseen purposes and plans andpromises. In order to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor. 5:7), I have to “fix [my]eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen” (4:18). I have to readjust my gaze past the visible and “to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God” (1 Tim. 1:17). Because what I find in Him is the source of my hope and faith for thevery obvious struggles that cloud my view.It takes a constant claim of “I believe,” and a consistent confession of “help myunbelief” to hold on to faith and refine faithlessness. It takes the supernatural, powerful help of the Savior to provide faith, which “is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8).Join me, friend, in bringing your children before your Savior and entrusting them to Him. Your trust may be faulty, but declare to Him that you believe Him and plead for help for your unbelief.20208:30-10:00 • BREAKFAST (FREEDOM A)10:00-12:00 • MAIN SESSION (FREEDOM B)CHECK OUTIS 12:00.
