President & CEO MessageDear Friends, It has certainly been a challenging couple of years as we continue to navigate a global pandemic — it seems like we get a handle on one issue and another crops up! We have grown leaps and bounds in the areas of resilience, creativity and the ability to consistently shift our focus toward positivity and possibility. I hope our annual report for 2022 will help paint a picture of all we were able to accomplish during trying times. Our staff of more than 280 employees has worked tirelessly to keep the doors at Family Health Center (FHC) open. Their tenacity and motivation is inspiring, and I’m proud to work alongside them. They continue to keep quality care, patient access and customer service at the forefront of all they do. Our team goes above and beyond to elevate the standard of care for our community members. This year alone, our staff ensured that over 200 uninsured people received free dental care during our Dental Day Of Caring, over 1,100 children were immunized and prepared for school during our Back to School Bash, and 200 high-risk women addressed their healthcare needs — some for the first time. Our staff also dedicate themselves to developing our local workforce with free training and education for people who are passionate about a career in healthcare. FHC employees don’t just show up for work. Our team members step up to volunteer during their free time because they are committed to our community and they care. That’s what makes FHC so special. It brings me the greatest joy to share with you that as we head into 2023 (our 52nd year), we are feeling refreshed and ready to explore new ways to support and serve our beloved Kalamazoo community! Thank you for being on this journey with us. We appreciate you more than you may ever know. We remain grateful for your support and will continue to provide the leadership necessary to craft innovative strategies and fortify partnerships that foster health and well-being for everyone in our community. Board Chair MessageDear Community Members, As chair of the Family Health Center (FHC) Board of Directors for 2022, I have had the unique privilege of working alongside some of the most passionate and dedicated leaders and advocates I’ve ever known. Together with other community partners, I have witnessed many progressive solutions for some of the most complex healthcare challenges of our time. Over this past year, our board members have worked seamlessly alongside FHC staff and community volunteers to create optimal solutions to many of the most pressing healthcare challenges faced by our patients. The team has kept the doors open during some very difficult days, while still offering quality care and patient experience. I’m very proud of the work they’re doing and happy to share with you this snapshot of accomplishments and opportunities from 2022. We remain grateful for your support and will continue as a governing board to provide the leadership necessary to craft innovative strategies and fortify partnerships that foster health and well-being for everyone in our community. Thank you for joining us as we continue to improve the quality of healthcare in Kalamazoo County. Yours in Service,Patrick Troman Board Chair

Dr. Lisandra Soto Dental Day of Caring200+PATIENTS SERVED$72,000+IN FREE DENTAL CAREWe love giving our community reasons to smile! The annual Family Health Center Dr. Lisandra Soto DentalDay of Caring was celebrated in June this year. We served hundreds of people without adequate insurance who had been living in pain and believing they had no affordable dental options. To be able to bring relief to so many people during this special event is what drives the dozens of dental professionals and volunteers who donate their time and talents to this special event. Since its creation in 2019, FHC has provided approximately $175,000 in free dental care.

Back to SchoolBash1,800+HAPPY PARTICIPANTS500+IMMUNIZATIONS UPDATEDFrom carnival rides to snacks to face painting and dancing, our 14th Annual Back to School Bash (B2SB) was another fabulous and fun experience this year! Family Health Center is committed to ensuring that all children and teens in the community are immunized and have the resources they need to return to school prepared to learn. Each year, we welcome families to the FHC flagship location (on the corner of Paterson and Burdick Streets in the “Northside” neighborhood) where the entire parking lot is dedicated to a carnival-like celebration with food trucks, games, prizes, rides and even a petting zoo! As an added bonus, every child receives a new backpack filled with school supplies and personal care items. B2SB is one of the largest events hosted by FHC each year, so volunteer support from the community, private donors, and corporate sponsors are all critical. We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to make 2022 our biggest and best B2SB yet!

Women’s Health Boutique200HIGH-RISK WOMEN PARTICIPANTSThe highest at-risk group of patients we see at Family Health Center (FHC) is women — particularly women of color who experience the greatest barriers to receiving quality health-care and treatment. We imagined a new way to help combat this problem in 2022 by hosting our first-ever FHC Women’s Health Boutique. For four consecutive weeks in November, providers from different specialty areas hosted clinics designed to educate, screen, diagnose, prevent and treat a number of potentially dangerous health problems commonly experienced by women in our community. In addition to general health screenings, providers were able to screen for breast and cervical cancer, chlamydia and diabetes. In this first year alone, we provided quality care and support to 200 women while building trust through social engagement. We look forward to continuing to offer additional innovative ways to help improve the health and well-being of our most vulnerable patient groups. In the words of one attendee: “Without FHC, nobody would have known about my health risks, and I would probably not be here a year from now. My family and I thank you.”

Medical Assistant Training InstituteAnother way we seek to add value and well-being to our community is through workforce development. The Family Health Center Training Institute Medical Assistant Program provides unique career-building opportunities and pathways to success during a 24-week program. Students learn everything they need to know to provide critical support to medical providers. FHC offers the program free-of-charge to qualified applicants who display a passion for working in healthcare. The program equips graduates with the tools they need to develop and excel as a professional Medical Assistant. All graduates are offered full-time positions for three years following program completion. This type of leading-edge community engagement is very important as we move into the future at FHC. I have a passion for helping others, so when Family Health Center offered this program, I couldn’t wait to jump on it.
