Third Edition Ferring Focus Focus on Our Poultry better to be safe than sorry The chickens and turkeys on Dales farm are well known and loved for their cheeky personalities as they roam freely around the farm Scavenging for tasty treats amongst the undergrowth to maintain their wellness and happiness was a common sight The ex battery hens which joined us as timid little scraps now unrecognizable in their newly grown fluffed up feathers as they confidently strut around the farm Therefore we are all terribly sad at the Centre that due to the high levels of Bird Flu in the UK we are having to keep them safely rehoused and undercover for the time being The instructions have been given to us by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs to reduce the spread of the disease and avoid culling Animal Welfare co ordinator Beth Budgen Ashton said We are doing everything we can to ensure our chickens and turkeys remain happy and healthy We hide meal worms amongst their woodchips so that they have to scratch about and search for them This keeps them stimulated and busy They still get plenty of daylight and fresh air through the railings on the front of the building Grace Coomber animal welfare assistant added We give them lots of extra treats and enrichment and check on them regularly They absolutely love grapes and seem very content and settled with their new housing arrangement She pointed out that the duck enclosure is covered with netting to keep them protected but also to enable them to remain in their pond habitat which would be difficult to recreate indoors In Other News Would Moo believe it A Tree mendous Display On 2nd November we were honoured to welcome two very special visitors to Dales Farm Daisy the Pantomime Cow and Minnie the chicken Accompanying them was the marketing crew for Worthing Theatres who were making a promotional video for the Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime which will be showing at Worthing Pavilion from 1st December See WTM website for tickets Our little pony Minnie was very excited to meet another Minnie and the pigs were particularly eager to meet the cow Not a sight you see every day here on the farm Our tree mendous Christmas Tree display has been beautifully put together by Bird pod and their support worker Leah Nothing says Christmas more than a beautiful live tree Potted Christmas Trees are now available to buy and pre cut trees should be available soon See the online shop on www ferringcountrycentre org for more details Page 3
