February 9, 2024ד״פשת טבש ’ל םיטפשמ תשרפ HEIGHTENED SENSITIVITY 4:50 PMDear Parents,The Mishnah in Avos in ז״י הנשמ ׳ג קרפ states: ץרא ךרד ןיא הרות ןיא םא – if there is no Torah, there is no ץרא ךרד – and הרות ןיא ץרא ךרד ןיא םא – if there is no Derech Eretz there is no Torah. This Mishnah seems to contradict itself. The second half of the Mishnah informs us that ץרא ךרד is a prerequisite for Torah. However, the first part clearly indicates that one can only attain ץרא ךרד after one has learned Torah! The Rabbeinu Yonah resolves this contradiction by defining two distinct forms of ץרא ךרד:1. Derech Eretz as essential good manners and interpersonal skills.2. An exceptional and heightened sensitivity that is sourced from immersion in דומיל הרותה When the latter part of the Mishnah states הרות ןיא ץרא ךרד ןיא םא, it is referencing the first form of ץרא ךרד. Good conduct and interpersonal skills are a perquisite for Torah. The first part of the Mishnah is teaching us that ץרא ךרד ןיא הרות ןיא םא – through ones’ toil in Torah he achieves a heightened sensitivity towards others and achieves a superior level of ץרא ךרד. Rav Eliyahu Lopian ל״צז points to two illustrations of this superior form of Derech Eretz in this week’s parsha. The first example is ירבע דבע. The Torah demands that the master of the slave care for his slave’s needs on par with his own. We thus find in Chazal the expression דבע הנוקה לכ ומצעל ןודא הנוקכ – one who acquires a slave has acquired a master for himself. If the master has only one bed, that bed is given to the slave. If he has one suit for Shabbos, he must give it to his slave. This is despite the fact that this person became a slave because he stole and was unable to pay back his thievery! Similarly, the master of an הירבע המא, a female Jewish slave, has a mitzvah to arrange her marriage with either himself or his son. This girl is the daughter of a poverty-stricken individual who was forced to sell his daughter into slavery. Hardly a girl that people would be hurrying to marry. Both these acts of ץרא ץרד do not come naturally to the individual. However, through Torah one develops a super-sensitivity and heightened ץרא ךרד that enable them to fulfill these commandments. !תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs●● Feb 11- Rebbeim meeting, 11:30 AM dismissal● Feb 13 - STEM Fair● Feb 15-19- No school, Mid-winter break● Feb 21- General Studies Faculty meeting- 3 PM dismissal for all students● March 2 - Motzei Shabbos - Torah Academy Auction(for ladies only)
