February 3, 2023ג״פשת טבש ב’’יחלשב תשרפ MIRACLES FOR US4:42 PMDear Parents, PaIn his sefer דודל ןרק, Rav Greenwald, a Dayan in pre-war Europe, notes that there was a fundamental difference between the nissim that Hashem performed in Mitzrayim through the ten makkos, and the nissim Hashem performed at Yam Suf. All the makkos were directed against the םיירצמ, so they didn’t prove conclusively that Hashem loved לארשי ינב. They may have been only demonstrating that Hashem was punishing the Egyptians for their repeated cruelty and brutality. The dynamics completely changed at Yam Suf. For the first time, Hashem changed the laws of nature and split the Yam Suf. Bnei Yisrael passed through on dry land. Once all the Yidden had crossed, Moshe stretched out his hand, the waters returned and the Mizriyim drowned. The nissim by Yam Suf, because they were directed at Bnei Yisrael as well, revealed the loving and special connection between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael. This distinction will help us understand why in Parshas Yisro, when Yisro joins Bnei Yisrael, Rashi writes that he did so due to what occurred at ףוס םי תעירק and קלמע תמחלמ. Rashi doesn’t mention the ten makkos. It was only when Yisro witnessed the unique love and connection between Hashem and Klal Yisrael that he was inspired to join, not from the ten makkos which did not demonstrate that same love. This can only be the pshat in the tefillah of Maariv when we say םכותמ לארשי ומע תא אצויו ףוס םי ירזג ןיב וינב ריבעמה םלוע תורחל. In Mitzrayim we were called לארשי ומע, but at Yam Suf, we became וינב, Hashem’s sons. It was after Hashem performed the nissim by Yam Suf out of His great love for us that we attained the status of ה״בקה לש וינב.!תבש טוגRabbi Ochs● Grade 8 girls are proudly modeling their new GO 2023 sweatshirts.
