6 The Lake-Front Magazine | MAY 2025 Continued...38 The Lake-Front Magazine | APRIL 2025Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, has long been a cherished destination for both locals and visitors, oering scenic beauty and a vibrant community. While many establishments continue to thrive, several iconic community gathering spots that once dened the area’s culinary landscape have since closed their doors, leaving behind fond memories and a rich history. One such place is the Deep Creek Lodge, now the site of Ski Harbor Townhomes. Originally purchased from Youghiogheny Hydro-Electric by Frank Page in 1928, the land began as a boys’ camp thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) who built a rustic lodge there in the 1930s. By 1958, it had become a bar and restaurant known simply as Deep Creek Lodge. Nestled on the north end of the lake, it drew in a devoted crowd—mainly blue-collar workers from the mills of Pittsburgh, who made it part of their weekend escape.Just down the road, the scent of sizzling barbecue often drifted from Storey’s Bar, built in 1930 by Matt Sr. and Velma Storey on 7.75 acres of lakefront property. On busy weekends, it wasn’t unusual for the Storeys to butcher several dozen chickens from their coop to prepare for the hungry crowd. With its early opening at 9:00 a.m. and late closings whenever the last customer left, Storey’s Bar was a lively xture of the Deep Creek scene. In 1980, Velma’s estate sold the bar to Edward “Ned” Holloway, who remodeled and reopened it as the Rendezvous, carrying on the tradition of good times and loyal patrons.Generally located where Uno’s stands today, the Rainbow Inn was one of the lake’s earliest establishments. 40 The Lake-Front Magazine | MAY 2025 Gus Brickner: e Polar Bear Who Conquered Deep Creek LakeFor most visitors to Deep Creek Lake, the water is a place of relaxation and recreation, a playground for boating, shing, and summer swims. But for one man, the lake was a challenge, a proving ground, and a frigid test of endurance. Gustave "Gus" Brickner, better known as "The Human Polar Bear," made history on August 23, 1958 when he swam 16 miles across Deep Creek Lake at an altitude of 2,461 feet. At the age of 46, he completed the feat in 8 hours and 10 minutes, in an extraordinary dis-play of athleticism and perseverance. His legendary swim is now woven into the fabric of Deep Creek Lake’s history, a testament to the lake’s role in adventure sports and endurance challenges. The Making of a Polar BearBorn in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, in 1912, Gus Brickner was no stranger to hardship. Losing his father at a young age, he developed resil-ience early in life, a trait that would later dene his swimming career. A retired steelworker, he took to the water not just as a pastime but as a way of life. Brickner swam daily in the Monongahela River, undeterred by ice, snow, or plummeting temperatures. His reputation for cold-water swimming grew, earning him the nickname "The Human Polar Bear."His endurance was legendary. By 1986, he had logged an astonishing 38,512 miles of swimming, a record recognized by the Guin-ness Book of World Records. He swam nearly every day of the year—only Christmas was reserved as a day of rest. Whether it was the Monongahela, Allegheny, or Youghiogheny rivers, or the frigid waters of Lake Ontario, Brickner swam distances that would exhaust even the most seasoned athletes. His swims included 25 miles in the Allegheny River, 21 miles at Youghiogheny Lake Reservoir, and 15 miles in Lake Ontario at Toronto. The Deep Creek Lake SwimIn August of 1958, Brickner set his sights on Deep Creek Lake, Maryland’s largest freshwater lake. With an elevation of 2,461 feet, the lake’s waters can be brisk even in the summer, adding an extra challenge to his long-distance swim. Starting at Green Glade Inlet, he embarked on a 16-mile swim to Deep Creek Lodge at McHenry, completing the feat in 8 hours and 10 minutes. The endurance re-quired for such a swim was immense, testing both physical and mental limits. His achievement remains one of the most remarkable endurance swims in the lake’s history.Community SpotlightWritten by Collen DuBoseContinued...

42 The Lake-Front Magazine | MAY 2025 Community Spotlight ContinuedHis swim at Deep Creek Lake was just one of many incredible long-distance swims in his career. He had already conquered 25 miles in the Allegheny River and 21 miles at Youghiogheny Lake Reservoir. But Deep Creek Lake held a special signicance—it was a growing hub for outdoor adventure, and Brickner’s swim added to the lake’s legend as a place for extraordinary athletic feats.A Tradition of Cold-Water SwimmingBrickner’s love for cold-water swimming extended beyond personal records. He was a pioneer of winter swims, making headlines with his annual New Year’s Day plunge into the Monongahela River. From 1951 to 1970, his icy swims were broadcast on Pittsburgh television, inspiring others to brave the cold. It was this spirit of endurance and adventure that laid the groundwork for events like the Deep Creek Dunk, an annual event where participants take a midwinter plunge into the lake’s icy waters.Today, the Deep Creek Dunk draws thrill-seekers from all over, raising funds for the Special Olympics Maryland. While many take the plunge for fun, few can claim the endurance and fortitude of Brickner, whose cold-water swims were not just for spectacle but a way of life. His story continues to inspire those who take part in the event, reminding them of the human capacity to push limits and embrace challenges. The English Channel: A Near TriumphPerhaps the most dramatic episodes of Brickner’s swimming career were his two attempts to conquer the English Channel. The 21-mile stretch of water between England and France has long been consid-ered the pinnacle of open-water swimming, with its strong currents, unpredictable weather, and frigid temperatures. The rst recorded solo swim across the channel was accomplished by Captain Matthew Webb in 1875, a feat that set the stage for endurance swimmers worldwide. In 1957, Brickner made his rst attempt and came heartbreakingly close to success—just four miles from shore, severe cramps forced him to abandon the swim. His second attempt, in 1960, saw him come even closer, reaching just 400 yards from the English coastline before he collapsed from exhaus-tion and had to be pulled from the water. At the time of his rst attempt, he was 45 minutes ahead of the world record pace, showcasing his immense strength and endurance.Despite these near misses, Brickner’s efforts placed him among the elite in the world of endurance swimming. His determination to swim the channel mirrored the same resilience he displayed in every challenge he undertook, from daily swims in ice-laden rivers to record-breaking distance feats.A Lasting LegacyGus Brickner’s exploits may have predated the digital age, but his legacy endures. His name is immor-talized in the Guinness Book of World Records, his feats spoken of in reverent tones by open-water swimmers and endurance athletes. His willingness to test his limits made him a true pioneer in the sport, a man whose love for the water transcended conventional boundaries of age, climate, and physi-cal challenge. At Deep Creek Lake, his impact is still felt. His 1958 swim remains one of the great endurance feats associated with the lake, standing alongside other adventure sports milestones that have helped shape the region into a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Today, as the Deep Creek Lake Centennial is celebrated, the memory of Brickner’s swim serves as a reminder of the lake’s role in fostering human resilience and adventure. As participants line up each winter for the Deep Creek Dunk, as kayakers navigate the rapids created by controlled dam releases, and as swimmers take to the water in the summer months, the spirit of Gus Brickner—the Polar Bear who swam against the odds—lives on.

56 The Lake-Front Magazine | MAY 2025 I kicked o the spring with the kind of scene you can only stumble into in Garrett County: a drive down Sang Run Road turned into an unexpected farm visit when I spotted my dear friend Julie Friend (yes, her last name says it all!) standing by the fence at Wildom in full farmer uniform, cradling an adorable newborn lamb. Naturally, I pulled over. You don’t not-stop for a lamb cameo (See Photo) and a hug from Julie.Back in town, a big heartfelt shoutout goes to my Grandma, Anna Mary Fratz, who recently moved into Cherry Hill Assisted Living in Accident. I’m thrilled to report that she’s settling in beautifully, making friends, and thriving under the top-notch care of Crystal DeBerry and her exceptional team. That facility is more like a boutique resort with better conversation and more Bingo. My grandma Anna Mary Fratz and me.Man About Town: Joyrides, Lambs, and a Gold Medal HomecomingMike DropMike DropTheTheby Mike Fratz LEFT: Julie Friend and a baby lambcalled Georgie.ABOVE: Meand Georgie.BELOW: Pennyat work

58 The Lake-Front Magazine | MAY 2025 Continued...The Mike Drop ContinuedSpeaking of voices, you’ll get to hear mine—along with a stage full of harmony—at the Garrett Choral Society’s Spring Concert on Sunday, May 18 at 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College. It’s going to be a musical buet, co-directed by the talented Dr. Sean and Debi Beachy. Tickets? Easy. Grab them online at GarrettArts.org or at the door. Adults $15, students $5, kids under 5—free! Come join us and bring your singing spirit (or just your clapping hands). Now let’s talk about work—but the fun kind! Big news at Railey Design: we’ve joined forces with the fabulous team from Bungalow Deep Creek (owned by Steven Wilburn and Shawn Fitzgerald). Don’t worry, both showrooms are staying put—Railey at Market on 42, and Bungalow in Market Square—but now with even more style, service, and options for you mountain-modern design lovers. I’ll be splitting my time between the two spots, so if you see me zipping around with fabric swatches and oor plans, wave and say hi. Also, keep an eye on Market on 42—some exciting things are cooking, including a new restaurant coming in May. You heard it here rst! While at Bungalow this past month, I already ran into some Lakefront Magazine fans and readers of Mike Drop, Mike At Uno’s for a fundraiser, from left, Me, Audrey Kennedy, Scott Lohr, Judy Simpson, John Simpson.Garrett Choral Society RehearsalMe and Laura Fike

Hope to run into you again soon, Mike and Kathy! Now for some major local pride: Brandon Wilt—yes, the very same Brandon we celebrated as an “Unsung Hero” last September—just came back from the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy with a gold medal! He even brought it into the store to show me. And no surprise: it looks fabulous on him. Congratulations, Brandon. You continue to inspire us all and we are so proud of you!Last week, I made my way over to Pizzeria Uno’s for a fundraiser for Garrett Mentors, that incredible group supporting our local youth. It was hosted by none other than our powerhouse community champion, the ever-unstoppable Laura Fike. Laura has so much charisma and fashion sense - and never misses a fundraiser - either as its host or attendee. I brought along my mom Nancy Jo, my stepdad Steve, and a bunch of friends to have dinner, catch up, and raise a slice (and funds) for a great cause. Finally, let’s light some candles and throw some confetti for my wonderful Aunt Julie Fratz-Orr, who just celebrated her birthday at the Marina Club on Deep Creek Drive. She’s the kind of person who shows up for everyone, so it was a joy to see so many people showing up for her. Love you, Aunt Julie—cheers to many more!I hope all our readers are having an amazing Spring so far. See you out on the water soon enough, and just maybe at my choir concert too!Steven Shelton, Nancy Jo Shelton, Marcia Warnick, Missy, Tawny Brack, Valerie GlassKathy and Mike Carducci and meBrandon Wilt with his Gold Medalfrom Special OlympicsWorld Winter Games, and me.

International inuences have the choir singing in the Estonian language about the myth-ical origin of music. A folk song from Newfoundland and two works inspired by Irish and English poets continue the global theme. In “Past Life Melodies”, Australian composer Sarah Hopkins utilizes the adventurous techniques of chant voice and harmonic overtone singing. Intrigued? Diamond Gala to honor the hospital’s 75th anniversary The Garrett Regional Medical Center Foundation will host its bi-annual gala on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Ag Heritage Hall at the Garrett County Fairgrounds in McHen-ry. This year’s theme, ‘Diamonds and Decades’, will celebrate the hospital’s 75th anniver-sary and the rich history of care the hospital has provided since 1950.“We are so honored to celebrate a huge milestone for the hospital at this year’s gala,” stated Mark Boucot, President and CEO of GRMC. “For 75 years, GRMC has remained dedicated to providing quality care to its residents and neigh-boring regions. This milestone reects not only the hospital's enduring dedication to excel-lence, but also the unwavering support and trust of the commu-nity we serve.”The event will feature an up-scale dinner from Huckleberry’s Catering, desserts from Traders Coee House, a silent auction, live music during cocktail hour, and a DJ to end the night with dancing. “The gala planning committee is hard at work to ensure this event is both elegant and memo-rable, honoring the legacy of our hospital and the countless lives we have been privileged to care for over the years,” said Emily Tusing, Director of Foundation and Marketing. “We are excited to once again transform the Ag Heritage Hall into an elegant space for this black tie event.”Funds raised from the ‘Diamond and Decades’ gala will benet the Aspiring Nurse Pro-gram at Garrett Regional Medical Center, ensuring the next generation of nurses and the continued legacy of quality care in the community.66 The Lake-Front Magazine | MAY 2025 Continued...What’s HappeningPictured are Emily Tusing, Executive Director of Foundation and Marketing, GRMC; Janis Bush and Joyce Flinn, co-chairs of the gala planning committee; and Mark Boucot, President and CEO of Garrett Regional Medical Center and Potomac Valley Hospital.
