Since then, I’ve been blessed with the talents (and strong backs) of Collen DuBose and Michael Fratz, and their help has been invaluable. Now we’ve decided to expand our team even further and welcome Sarah Myers to the fold. Sarah is editor and owner of the online magazine deepcreektimes.com, which she has been publishing this past decade. We welcome Sarah to the position of Managing Editor and co-owner of the magazine. Her exper-tise, especially with digital publishing and online marketing, t right in with our mission here at The Lake-Front. Sarah and I will be working as partners moving forward as we integrate our ideas and business models to continue providing our readers with the most up-to-date information as possible. This also gives me time to pursue another passion of mine, working more closely with the House of Hope, a local charity that provides emergency short term help to Garrett County residents. I served on their Board of Directors for years and when the current directors decided to retire, I was honored to be asked to step in and help lead the organization forward. I will still be helping with the magazine and you can reach me by the same phone number and email; I’d love to hear from you.I’m incredibly proud of this issue...we have so many original stories and informative features for our readers, and I’m so grateful for the support from our readers and advertisers as I’ve learned to navigate these past few years and continue forward without Skip. Hosted at the Garrett County Airport—which grew from a modest, privately-owned lakeside grass airstrip in the 1940s and into a modern, 297-acre, government-owned general aviation hub—the event celebrates both the rich legacy and dynamic spirit of ight and horsepower.Attendees can expect a dazzling line-up of aircraft on display, from private planes to historic warbirds and military aircraft. And for those who prefer horsepower on the ground, the classic car show will feature everything from gleaming street rods and Corvettes to timeless vintage rides. Whether you’re an aviation bu, a gearhead, or just looking for a fun family day out, Wings & Wheels has something for everyone. In celebration of the 2025 Deep Creek Lake Centennial, this year’s Wings & Wheels event will feature a special pre-sentation showcasing the story of Garrett County’s rst airstrip—an im-portant but little-known chapter in our local aviation history. Guests can view historic photos and learn about the early days of ight in the county, includ-ing the location of the original landing eld. 40 The Lake-Front Magazine | JUNE 2025 Community SpotlightContinued... As the warmth of spring settles into our Appalachian hills, anticipation is building for what promises to be another landmark moment in Garrett County. Last year’s inaugural Pride Festival was nothing short of magical, and on June 14, 2025, Garrett County Pride, Inc. (GCP) is set to outdo itself with the Second Annual Pride Festival at Friendsville Community Park—under the inspiring theme “Mountain Made, Mountain Proud.”Building on a Historic DebutOn June 15, 2024, Garrett County Pride, Inc. (GCP) made history with its inaugural Pride Festival at Leo Martin Memorial Park. More than 400 attendees gathered for an afternoon of music, art, food and fellowship. The main festival was followed by a spirited afterparty in downtown Oakland, which brought total attendance to over 550. It was a milestone event: the rst-ever Pride Festival in Garrett County, and one that community members are still celebrating nearly a year later.“Something we kept on hearing,” recalls GCP founder and chairperson Devin Barroga, “was, ‘Never in a million years would I have thought there would be a Pride Festival in Garrett County!’ Well, it didn’t take a million years, and now we don’t have to dream about it anymore.”That sense of energy and possibility helped propel GCP’s broader mission: creating a visible, supportive presence for LGBTQIA+ people in the mountains of Western Maryland. From casual meet-ups at The Alley to the months-long eort that led to ocial 501(c)(3) status, the organization has worked tirelessly to center visibility, education and advocacy in Garrett County life.A Bigger, Bolder CelebrationThis year’s move to spacious Friendsville Community Park reects feedback from inaugural attendees in 2024, many of whom requested “bigger and better” in surveys conducted immediately after the rst festival. With room to roam, connect and create along the Youghiogheny River, the main festival will take place from 11 Garrett County Pride Festival Returns:“Mountain Made, Mountain Proud”Celebrates Creativity, Culture & CommunityPictures from the 2024 GC Pride Festival

Festivalgoers can also contribute a square to a community quilt or leave their handprint on “PRIDE” sculpture. Select works will be exhibited next month at the $MART ART space in Oakland. And just when you think the day is over, the festivities continue at 6 p.m. with an AfterParty—complete with DJ, performers, food & beverage service, and a chance to dance the evening away in Friendsville.Meaning of “Mountain Made, Mountain Proud”After surveying last year’s attendees and their glowing feedback, GCP embraced a unifying theme for 2025. As Chairperson Barroga explains, “‘Mountain Made’ reects the authenticity and resilience shaped by our Appalachian home, while ‘Mountain Proud’ celebrates the condence and creativity of our LGBTQIA+ community. Together, they capture our mission to promote love, acceptance, and unity right here in Garrett County and Western Maryland.”This slogan not only honors the land we love but also underscores the realities of queer life in Garrett County—where visibility can turn fear into belonging, and where every voice enriches the tapestry of our shared story.A Safe, Inclusive EventSafety and accessibility remain top priorities. GCP has partnered with AfterHourz Security alongside a trained volunteer security team to ensure a welcoming atmosphere. Complimentary amenities (including complimentary water, ADA-compliancy and quiet sensory area) underscore the organizers’ commitment to making the festival comfortable for all ages and abilities. 2024 volunteersJeremy Browning (Director of Maryland Commission on LGBTQIA+ Aairs) presenting Gubernatorial Proclamation from Gov. Each Holiday season, when the dorms at Garrett College empty out and teachers, administrators, and students all make their way home, some students are unable, for whatever reason, to leave campus. us, this particular couple’s home quietly becomes a lifeline to students far from home.Kelli and Eric Hallenbeck, longtime residents of the Deep Creek Lake area, have made it a tradition to welcome Garrett College students—particularly interna-tional students and athletes—into their home during the holidays. With many of these young people unable to travel back to their families, the Hallenbecks oer the next best thing: a seat at the table, a warm meal, and a sense of belonging.“As the co-Athletic Director and head baseball coach at Garrett College,” said Kelli, “my husband Eric is aware that many of the international students and other students/athletes cannot go home to be with loved ones at times during the holidays, so years ago we decided to open our doors and welcome these stu-dents to come have a meal and celebrate with us. 54 The Lake-Front Magazine | JUNE 2025 Continued...There’s something about the turn into June that makes me want to ing open the windows, roll up my sleeves, and throw on a big sunhat—okay, maybe just the last part. Summer is nearly here, and you can feel it waking up around the lake: longer days, busier roads, and hanging baskets full of begonias (especially at my mom’s lakehouse, where I’ve been recruited—willingly—to help get her seasonal owers planted and perky).Speaking of family tra-ditions and warm weather routines, I recently made the drive up to Addison, Pennsylvania—just about 20 minutes from Deep Creek—to stop by my cousin Robin’s beloved grocery and deli shop, The Blue Goose. A local gem on the way to Nemacolin and Fallingwater, this shop is the perfect pit stop if you’re headed toward Conuence or Uniontown. Homemade sandwiches, fresh deli fare, and friendly faces—what more could you want? 68 The Lake-Front Magazine | JUNE 2025 Mountain Laurel Garden Club Hosts Pleasant Gardens in the Valley TourThe Mountain Laurel Garden Club will host two public events in June: the ever-popular annual plant sale on Saturday, June 7, 9 – 11 a.m. (or until sold out); and the 2025 garden tour on Saturday, June 21, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Both events are held rain or shine (no pets). The plant sale will be held at the Glades Pavilion on Liberty St. in downtown Oakland (note this is a new location one-half mile from the Historical Museum). The sale features a variety of native plants, perennials, herbs, and heirloom tomatoes. Admission is free; cash or check only and no presales. Two weeks later on June 21, the club will host “Pleasant Gardens in the Valley.” The tour includes four gardens and farms in the Pleasant Valley area of southern Garrett County, all convenient-ly located o US 219 South. In addition to the gardens, tour attractions include ower gift basket demonstrations by the Floral Design Committee, live music and historical displays at all locations, and food for sale at three of the four locations. There will also be a display of antique garden tools, an art sale and exhibition, and information on the club’s ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Wonderly Farm Garden, featured on this year’s garden tour poster, is surrounded by Pleasant Valley’s vista of undulating dips and hills. With the goal of creating a produc-tive garden naturally, owners Marty and Mary Reisinger have developed a chemical-free sanctuary producing an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. They abstain from using herbicides, protect their crops with solar fencing, and embrace sustainable practic-es such as mulching, cover cropping, and minimal tilling. By using some row cover cloth and mini hoops, they are able to harvest a few of the vegetables well into late fall. (Their 2024 Christmas dinner included fresh tomatoes, spinach, potatoes, and leeks from the garden!) In addition to savoring the beautiful landscape, visitors will enjoy musical perfor-mances by Earl and Linda Eisenhart 10 a.m. – noon and Joe Osment noon – 2 p.m.Katharine and Max Dubansky, the owners of Backbone Food Farm, are familiar faces and long-time vendors at the Oakland Farmers Market. Over the last 26 years, the Dubanskys have restored depleted land into a ourishing ecosystem through rotational planting, cover cropping, and pasture-raised livestock inte-gration. The centerpiece of the garden is the stunning dahlias and vibrant sun-owers, which are the stars of the u-pick section, oering visitors the chance to hand-se-lect their own blooms. This year, the Martins have expanded their collection with the addition of lush hydrangeas, romantic garden roses, over 100 peonies, and graceful irises. The property also features a stunning fountain surrounded by a rock garden that displays carefully chosen positive armations embedded in gemstones laid in pavers.
