6 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 Continued...As Deep Creek Lake approaches its centennial in 2025, the community has the unique opportunity to celebrate its unique past, remarkable transformation, and ongoing signicance to Garrett County. Created in 1925 as a hydroelectric project, Maryland’s largest man-made lake has evolved from a rugged wilderness retreat to a thriving four-season destination. In honor of its 100th anniversary, the Deep Creek Lake Centennial Committee (DCL100) has developed an interactive historical timeline that categorizes the lake’s history by decade. This retrospective highlights the key developments, changes, and milestones that have shaped the lake we now enjoy over the past century.1924-1935: Camps and FarmsThe early years of Deep Creek Lake saw limited development due to the Great Depression and the area’s remoteness. Following the lake’s ocial opening on May 26, 1925, a few adventurous settlers established cabins along its shores. The rst known lakefront cabin, located near Meadow Mountain Run Cove, still stands today. The lake quickly became a focal point for outdoor enthusiasts, with Boy Scout Troop 1 of Oakland setting up camp in 1926 and Holy Cross College purchasing land for a seminarian retreat in 1930. Community life around the lake began taking shape with the rst Property Owners’ Association meeting in 1928 and the popular Water Carnival, which drew 6,000 spectators.1936-1945: Log Cabins & OuthousesA wave of rustic log cabin Feature StoryFeature Storyby Collen DuBoseDeep Creek Lake:Deep Creek Lake:How Did We Get Here? How Did We Get Here?

8 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 Continued...Feature Story Continueddevelopment began in the late 1930s, fueled by increasing interest in the lake’s recreational potential. The Deep Creek Yacht Club was chartered in 1937, further establishing the lake as a hub for boating and social gatherings. In 1942, Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) acquired the lake, marking a shift in its management and operations. By 1945, real estate investor Fulcher Smith had purchased 3,000 acres of surrounding land, setting the stage for future development.1946-1955: Post-War DoldrumsWhile much of post-WWII America experienced a boom, Deep Creek Lake remained relatively quiet. However, one of its most famous visitors, Albert Einstein, reportedly vacationed at the lake in 1946. The biggest milestone of the decade came in 1955 with the opening of Wisp Resort, which would later become a major driver of winter tourism in the area.1956-1965: A Blue-Collar RetreatDuring this period, Deep Creek Lake became an aordable retreat for blue-collar families, particularly from Pittsburgh. Modest vacation homes sprang up around the lake, and the local economy began to diversify. The Garrett County Fair found a permanent home in McHenry in 1957, and in 1965, Sky Valley Inc. was chartered, expanding residential options.1966-1975: Best Kept SecretAs the lake gained recognition, infrastructure improvements and new recreational opportunities attracted more visitors. The Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1966, and Deep Creek Lake State Park opened its doors in 1968. The early 1970s saw the rise of lakeside communities,

The State of Maryland agreed to manage recreation and public access in 1980, a crucial step in preserving the lake’s resources. Infrastructure projects, including the launch of the Deep Creek sewer system in 1984, set the stage for future expansion. Innsbruck Village and Arrowhead condominiums were among the rst large-scale developments of this era.1986-1995: Development Takes OThis decade saw rapid growth, with the construction of major residential communities such as Blakeslee, Villages of Wisp, and Mountainside. The replacement of the 219 bridge in 1986 and the completion of I-68 in 1991 dramatically improved access to the lake. In 1991, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) transferred dam permitting to Maryland, solidifying local control over the lake’s future.1996-2005: Under New ManagementAs development accelerated, Maryland took a more active role in lake management. In 2000, the state purchased the lake from Penelec and established the Deep Creek Lake Policy and Review Board. Real estate milestones included the rst $1 million residential sale in 1997 and the launch of major developments such as Laurel Brook and Cedar Shores.2006-2015: Bust and BoomThe economic downturn of 2007 briey stalled growth, but Deep Creek Lake rebounded strongly in the 2010s. Infrastructure and environmental management became key priorities, with the adoption of the Deep Creek Watershed Management Plan in 2014. Transportation improvements, including the expansion of PA-43, made the lake more accessible than ever, boosting tourism and real estate activity.Continued...

24 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 Continued...In a small Appalachian town like ours, community is everything. We celebrate together, grieve together, and when one of us stumbles, we extend a hand to lift them up. That spirit is alive and well at VFW Post 10077, located in Oakland -Deer Park, Maryland. For 53 years, this local cornerstone has been doing just that—lifting up veterans, families, and students, ensuring that no one in our community has to stand alone.I recently had the pleasure of learning about the organization by interviewing Calvin, the post commander, who is not only a dedicated leader but also a wounded veteran himself. Calvin’s passion for this organization is clear the moment he speaks of the work Post #10077 does. He doesn’t just hold a title—he lives the mission of helping others every single day. And he does it all as a volunteer.Beyond leading Post #10077, Calvin also serves as Commander of District 3, overseeing all VFW posts across Western Maryland—from Oakland to Hagerstown (5 total locations). That’s a lot of ground to cover, but for Calvin, it’s about ensuring every post is equipped to support their communities, just like ours is here in Garrett County. So, what exactly does the VFW Post 10077 – 53 Years of VFW Post 10077 – 53 Years of Service and Still Going StrongService and Still Going StrongBusiness SpotlightBusiness Spotlightby Mike FratzLast July 4th 2024 VFW #10077 Truck Parade Float - Image from Commander Calvin James Friend.

26 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 Continued...Business Spotlight ContinuedVFW do? A better question might be—what don’t they do?At its heart, the VFW exists to support veterans and their families. Post #10077 works tirelessly to raise funds for the Veterans Relief Fund, which is a lifeline for local vets facing tough times. Whether it’s help with medical expenses, transportation to appointments, covering bills after the loss of a loved one, or simply making ends meet during a crisis, the relief fund is there—no red tape, just neighbors helping neighbors. The VFW is also deeply committed to educating and encouraging our next generation. They sponsor two major scholarship programs:• Patriot’s Pen: Open to middle school age students, this essay competition encourages young minds to reect on what patriotism means to them. Winners receive cash awards to help with their education.• Voice of Democracy: This program, geared toward high schoolers, challenges students to craft and deliver a speech. Top participants receive scholarships to support their future studies. In addition to these scholarships, the VFW recognizes the heroes among us with awards for local teachers and rst responders. Whether it’s Teacher of the Year or honoring a reghter or police ocer who went above and beyond, these awards highlight the dedication and bravery found right here in our community.Of course, supporting the VFW doesn’t have to mean writing a check or attending a formal fundraiser. Sometimes, it’s as easy as grabbing a drink with friends. The canteen and bar at Post #10077 is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM — sometimes later if folks are still swapping stories and enjoying their evening. They oer a full-service bar, tasty food, and a friendly atmosphere. They’ve even got Maryland State Lottery machines and two high-quality Diamond pool tables that attract pool leagues and tournaments throughout the week, all year long. Here’s the best part—every single dollar you spend at the canteen goes back into the VFW’s work. That burger you ordered? That cold beer after work? It’s all helping a local veteran, a family in crisis, or a student pursuing their dreams. It’s a night out with a purpose.Recent addition of top-tier Diamond Pool Tables at Deer Park VFW

34 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 Continued...February might be the shortest month, but boy, did it pack a punch. Between wigs, wings, and a little salt therapy, it was a month that kept me on my toes—when they weren’t frozen from the cold.Let’s dive in.I think a late breakfast can be the best breakfast. One particularly lazy morning, I rolled out of bed at 11 AM—because it was my day o and, well, I could. My stomach was growling, and I was craving a hearty breakfast. Enter Englanders in Oakland, the saving grace for late risers like me. Open until 2 PM, it’s perfect for those of us who hit snooze a few too many times.I met up with my friends Collen DuBose and his daughter Lucy, and we did what any self-respecting locals would do—we ordered the buckwheat pancakes. If you know, you know. They’re a classic. And because you can’t possibly get up from a big breakfast and just go home, we wandered through the antiques section afterward - one of my favorite strolls, letting the pancakes settle while we admired vintage treasures. (Did I need that ceramic rooster? No. Did I almost buy it anyway? Absolutely.)Just a few days later, I found myself at the Grantsville American Legion for their popular Wednesday Wing Night. The occasion? A celebration for Jack DuBose—Collen’s dad—who retired from Garrett College after the fall semester, as a long-time professor of English. 36 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 The Mike Drop Continuedquietly made a big impact on the community, so it was only tting that his send-o involved good friends, cold drinks, and delicious wings. I brought along my friend, Aly Dehner, and her son Vaughn. We all wanted to get out of the house, and it was just the perfect thing for all of us. Jack’s buddies—Tim Foster and the legendary “Pepsi Pete”—were on wing duty, and let me tell you, they know their stu. We chatted with some familiar Grantsville faces, and for a few hours, the cold outside didn’t seem to matter.Speaking of the cold, it’s been absolutely brutal this month. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been living in sweaters and daydreaming about cashmere. To combat the winter blues, I treated myself to a session in the salt chamber at OMG Relax at Market on 42—conveniently right next door to where I work at Railey Design. If you haven’t experienced the salt chamber yet, I highly recommend it. It’s like hitting a reset button for your body and mind. You walk in tense and chilly; you walk out feeling like you’ve just had a week-long vacation. Pure magic. There are many services oered at OMG Relax, including the state-of-the-art medical grade salt therapy which helps with so many ailments, especially lung and allergy related but much more. As well as red light therapy which is excellent for this time of year especially. Of course, no month is complete without a little celebration, and this February brought us the Wig Party Bar Crawl in honor of Julie Friend and her sister Ava’s birthdays. When you combine a great group of friends with wild wigs and a few drinks, you know you’re in for a night to remember (or… at least mostly remember). We made our rounds, starting at Pawn Run for a casual drink, before moving to JG’s for some classic small-town bar energy. We capped things o at Black Bear, where the music was pumping, and our wigs were slightly askew but still fabulous. The best part? Seeing everyone’s creativity come to life through their wig choices. From neon pink bobs to mullets that would make Billy Ray Cyrus jealous, it was a colorful, laughter-lled night that reminded me just how much I love this community. With March on the horizon, and while I’m hoping for a little less snow and a little more sunshine, I know whatever the weather, if you’re willing to step out, there’s always something happening around here. Whether it’s breakfast at Englanders, wings with friends, or an impromptu salt therapy session, this place has a way of keeping things interesting.Until next time—stay warm, stay stylish (cashmere, anyone?), and if you see a guy in a questionable wig at the bar, come say hi. The Garrett Arts Passport Program is back, oering another year of adventure, creativity, and the chance to earn a limited-edition, artist-designed patch—this time featuring the work of Lisa Robinson, a talented local artist, graphic designer, and whitewater enthusiast.Lisa’s beautifully illustrated design captures the wild beauty and cultural signicance of the Youghiogheny River, a beloved part of Garrett County. The artwork brings to life the rushing waters of Muddy Creek Falls, adventurous rafters tackling the rapids, the beloved blooms of the rhododendron, and a playful black bear leaving its artistic mark. Through bright, playful colors and a dynamic composition, Lisa tells the story of our region shaped by both its outdoor recreation and creative spirit. The Garrett Arts Passport Program makes discovering local art and heritage fun and rewarding! By attending annual arts and cultural events and visiting participating locations across the county, participants collect stamps in their passport booklets. Once the booklet is lled, they receive this year’s collectible, iron-on embroidered patch, a unique badge representing their journey through Garrett County’s cultural landscape.Funded in part by the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area and the Garrett County Arts Council, the Passport Program encourages both Creativity, Community, & ConservationCelebrate Local Art with This Year’s Garrett Arts Passport PatchArtistically SpeakingArtistically Speakingby The Garrett County Arts CouncilThis year’s Garrett Arts Passport Patchdesigned by Lisa Robinson

From art exhibitions and live performances to historic sites and local festivals, the program is a wonderful way to celebrate and support the creative community that makes our home so special.Lisa Robinson, the artist selected for the 2025 patch design, brings her passion for both art and the outdoors into her work. As an avid whitewater paddler, she wanted to showcase a part of Garrett County’s culture that isn’t often in the spotlight: the whitewater community and its deep connection to the Youghiogheny River.“I often don’t see the whitewater lifestyle represented in a way that reects its full impact on our region,” Lisa explains. “My goal with this design was to celebrate the natural beauty of Garrett County, the thrill of our rivers, and the role the arts play in our community.”One of the purposes of the narrative on Lisa’s design is to bring attention to the Maryland Scenic and Wild designated Youghiogheny River, running through Garrett County. She is concerned that the environmental integrity of this pristine ecosystem, Maryland’s only Wild River, may be impacted by recent legislative actions and other interests. These issues include a proposed high-impact trail with multiple bridge crossings along the river corridor; the Swallow Falls bridge construction project that will remove 2.6 acres of old growth hemlock trees from within protected area of the Youghiogheny Scenic and Wild River Corridor; the disbanding of the Youghiogheny Advisory Board that upheld the 1996 Yough Wild Scenic River Management Plan; MD Senate Bill 837 (2024), of which members of the river community have

48 The Lake-Front Magazine | MARCH 2025 What’s HappeningDive Deep into Deep Creek LakeDCL100 Lecture Series Do you love Deep Creek Lake? Then dive deep into its history, nature and the operation of the dam with the Deep Creek Lake Centennial Committee’s (DCL100) Lecture Series. Every Thursday in March, the DCL100 Committee is presenting a lecture at the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College on a dierent aspect of the lake. The lectures include: “The Fish of Deep Creek Lake” - Eric Null, Executive Director Pennsylvania Coun-cil of Trout Unlimited. Eric will share his extensive knowledge of the sh species, habitats and behavior of the sh of the lake. You may even get to learn about some secret techniques and hot spots. “History of Real Estate at Deep Creek Lake” - Karen Myers, Taylor Made Deep Creek Sales. The State of Maryland rst dened most of the property parcels in the County when it created 50 acre lots as payment to soldiers in the Revolution-ary War. Karen will take us through how these lots grew and shrank (and how much they cost) to become many of the lake-area property developments we recognize today. “Operation of the Deep Creek Hydroelectric Station” - Operations Manager Brookeld Renewable. The dam that forms Deep Creek Lake is rather unremark-able in appearance, but it channels water to a power plant that generates enough electricity to power thousands of homes. The Operations Manager of the owner and operator of the dam and power plant will provide an overview of how hydro-eletric power works and how the electricity it generates gets to the grid and its end users. “Wildlife and Natural Habitats of Deep Creek Lake” - Naturalist from Deep Creek Lake State Park. Even though it was not intentional, Deep Creek Lake has be-come the habitat for a rich ecosystem of wildlife that have adapted to the “new” waterbody. A Naturalist from Deep Creek Lake State Park will take us through the predominant wildlife around the lake, including many fascinating, but lesser known species. The Lecture Series will occur each Thursday in March 2025 at 6pm at the Perform-ing Arts Center at Garrett College. Attendees at the lectures will be able to collect a DCL100 Exploration Ticket and receive the stamp for the month of March, and they will be able to enter to win a DCL100 swag pack. The lectures will be record-ed and published to Youtube for those who are unable to attend in person. The nal schedule of lectures will be published to dcl100.com
