HEALTH WELLNESS sponsored by HEALTHYHABITS Mindfulness Techniques to Support Anxiety Today the word anxiety is very common You may wonder What really is anxiety Does my child have anxiety or How do I help them when their anxiety gets overwhelming Anxiety is an emotion that can be characterized by any of the following feelings of tension worried thoughts and a variety of physiological reactions including rapid heart rate fast breathing sweating shaking digestive issues or cognitive disturbances such as ruminating thoughts and difficulty concentrating When feelings of anxiety start rising it can create a spiraling of negative thoughts distorting reality and imposing fear and negativity that can lead to more anxiety Anxiety can surface in many ways and keeping an open line of communication with your child will help you determine when to step in and help Studies have shown that mindfulness is a tool to help decrease anxiety when it starts Mindfulness is an awareness that arises through purposeful attention in the present moment and without judgment When a child can recognize and accept what they are feeling they have an easier time letting that emotion go When the child has a hard time accepting the emotion grounding techniques can be helpful Below are 2 grounding activities you can try with your child 1 Focus on your breathing Take a big deep breath in through the nose for 5 seconds Hold for 5 seconds Exhale out your mouth for 5 seconds This refocuses the brain on breathing and can slow breathing down to provide a calming effect 2 Enlist all 5 senses Find something you can see touch hear smell and taste This can redirect your child to the present moment and help overcome moments of anxiety Take a deep belly breath to begin 5 LOOK Look around for 5 things that you can see and say them out loud 4 FEEL Say 4 things you can feel 3 LISTEN Listen for 3 sounds 2 SMELL Say two things you can smell If you can t smell anything or you can t move then name your 2 favorite smells 1 TASTE Say one thing you can taste If you can t taste anything say your favorite thing to taste Take another deep belly breath to end Jenn Maynard St Luke s Magic Valley Paramedics Sponsored by 10 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m
