CYBERARTS STUDIO ACADEMY FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Parents,Happy February and welcome to Semester 2.I am pleased to share that we will be offering aPE swim class every Monday, Wednesday, andThursday during periods 4 and 8. If you wantyour child to participate, please sign theconsent form. Once this is done, we will adjustthe students' schedule to ensure that they areable to participate. All students must have theirparent's consent to participate. Please completethe form that was sent home.Excitingly, we are also offering Drivers Ed toour students after school on Thursdays, from2:45pm-3:45pm. Students must be 16 years orolder. At the end of the course, students will beable to take the Learners Permit exam and forall the students who pass, we will organise atrip to the DMV for our students to get theirpermit - pending they have all the requireddocuments.Our afterschool Chess club will meet everyWednesday in room G1B beginning February7th. Please encourage your child to attend.Starting in March, I will be having a once permonth virtual Parent Principal Zoom meeting. Iwill send out the Zoom link a week before andsend reminders for families to join. Black History Month is an annual observance invarious countries to celebrate the achievements andcontributions of Black people throughout history. Itoriginated in the United States, where it is celebratedin February, while in Canada and the United Kingdom,it is observed in October. The month provides anopportunity to recognize the struggles and triumphsof Black individuals, as well as to raise awarenessabout the importance of equality and diversity.During Black History Month, events such as lectures,exhibits, and performances are often held to honorthe legacy of Black leaders, activists, artists, andscholars who have made significant impacts onsociety.This month serves as a reminder of the continuedfight against racism and discrimination, as well as atime to highlight the resilience and creativity of theBlack community. It is a chance to educate oneself onthe history of Black people, including the strugglesthey have faced and the progress they have made. Walker, born SarahBreedlove, was America's first self-made female millionaire. She achievedthis status through her successfulhaircare and beauty products businessin the early 20th century.1.2. Bessie Coleman, known as "Queen Bess," wasthe first African American woman to earn apilot's license in 1921. 8. The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, oftenreferred to as the "Black Wall StreetMassacre," was one of the deadliest racialviolence incidents in U.S. history. The Pullman Porter Strike of 1894, ledby A. Philip Randolph, was one of the firstmajor actions by African American laboractivists. The originsof this romantic holiday can betraced back to ancient Rome and thefeast of Lupercalia, a fertility festivaldedicated to Faunus, the Roman godof agriculture. During this festival,young men would draw names ofwomen from a box, and they wouldbe paired up for the duration of thefestival, often leading to marriages.The holiday as we know it today isnamed after St. Valentine, a Christianmartyr who lived in the 3rd century.The legend goes that St. Valentinedefied the Roman Emperor ClaudiusII's ban on marriage for young men, ashe believed that single men madebetter soldiers. St. Valentinecontinued to perform marriages insecret until he was discovered andultimately executed on February 14th. Over time, Valentine's Day evolvedinto a celebration of love andaffection, with people exchangingcards, gifts, and gestures of love totheir significant others, family, andfriends. The Lunar New Year, also known asChinese New Year or Spring Festival,holds immense cultural andhistorical significance for manyAsian communities around theworld. It marks the beginning of thelunar calendar and is a time forfamilies to come together, honorancestors, and usher in good fortunefor the coming year. The festivaltypically lasts for 15 days, with eachday carrying its own customs andtraditions.In 2024, the Lunar New Year will fallon January 22nd. This date isdetermined by the lunar calendar,which is based on the cycles of themoon, making it different from theGregorian calendar commonly usedin the West. The year 2024 will bethe Year of the Dragon according tothe Chinese zodiac, symbolizingstrength, success, and good luck.Celebrating the Lunar New Yearinvolves a variety of rituals andactivities. Families clean their homesto sweep away bad luck from theprevious year, decorate with redlanterns and paper cutoutssymbolizing good fortune, andprepare special dishes likedumplings and fish for prosperity.People also exchange red envelopescontaining money, perform lion anddragon dances for luck and wardingoff evil spirits, and set off fireworksto welcome the new year with abang.
