HEALTH WELLNESS sponsored by sponsored by SPOTLIGHT Nausea and Vomiting Nausea and vomiting are common occurrences and can be extremely uncomfortable for whoever experiences them There are many causative factors that can trigger nausea and vomiting some of those might include motion sickness the early stages of pregnancy certain medications infection viruses bacteria food poisoning various smells or odors head injury and others The primary concern with vomiting is the risk of dehydration especially in children Oftentimes diarrhea is present with nausea and vomiting and furthers the risk of dehydration When nausea and vomiting does occur it can be selflimiting for example when a person experiences motion sickness and becomes nauseated and proceeds to vomit generally the nausea and vomiting is short lived and the person begins to feel better shortly after However in other cases a person may need to seek medical attention if the nausea and vomiting persist for a prolonged period of time especially if signs of dehydration are present If an adult experiences nausea and vomiting for more than a day it s a good idea to visit your doctor However children can become dehydrated very quickly and need to see their doctor if nausea and vomiting last longer than a few hours especially if they have not urinated within that time frame Some of the signs of dehydration that one might see include a dry mouth a fast heart beat or fast breathing headaches muscle cramping confusion lack of energy dark colored urine or not urinating for several hours and in infants a dry diaper for more than 3 hours If vomiting occurs one should avoid eating solid foods until the nausea subsides and should try to drink small amounts of clear liquids to stay hydrated Pedialyte is a good idea to help replace lost electrolytes and fluids Once the nausea has subsided a bland diet should be started This may include foods such as toast saltine crackers broth bananas or rice This will help reduce irritation to the stomach and provide some nutrition until a normal diet can be restarted Jonathan Pittard PA C Scott M Cook NP S 208 736 7422 OPEN 8AM TO 7PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK www picctf com We ve moved across from Walmart in Twin Falls 10 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

COMMUNITY ARTICLE Candy Hearts Oobleck What is an oobleck you may ask The word actually comes from Dr Seuss s book called Bartholomew and the Oobleck However the definition is a non Newtonian liquid that acts like a liquid when it s at rest or not being touched When it s under pressure or being handled it becomes a solid So it can be a liquid or a solid Interesting How do you make an oobleck You can make your own oobleck with just water and cornstarch Be sure to measure the right amount or it won t work Here are the supplies you will need for this fun experimental activity Candy Conversation hearts 1 Cup cornstarch 1 1 5 cups of water Bowl Spoon Food coloring optional Shallow pan or pie dish Start by adding your cornstarch to a bowl then slowly add the water If you add too much of one then just sprinkle in more of the other until you get it right The food coloring is just for a fun coloring effect Then add in your candy hearts and play See when you rotate the bowl the substance appears like a liquid but it s holding the candy hearts up suspended I wonder what Skittles would do to your oobleck Would they color it in fun rainbow patterns The possibilities are endless Now go play Family Health 1 2 Page Horizontal 14 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m
