COMMUNITY ARTICLE Balloon Rocket Physics is all about energy and matter and the relationship they share with one another It is about solving problems and figuring out why things do what they do This is a great opportunity to ask questions and find answers through experimentation In this activity you will learn a little about Newton s three Laws of motion and physics Here is what you need for this Valentine s Day experiment SUPPLIES Balloon Tape Straws String Clothespin optional Cupid printout download and print from the link at end of the article Scissors SET UP 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Locate two anchor points across the room from each other two chairs will work great Measure and cut a length of string to fit the distance Tie off one end of the string Thread the straw onto the other end of the string before tying off that end on the second anchor point Make sure the string is taut between the two points Cut out the cupid from the link at the end of this article or draw your own You can use a sharpie to draw one on the side of the balloon Blow up the balloon and secure with a clothespin or just hold it Tape your paper cupid to the balloon Tape the balloon to the straw Blow up the balloon now it s filled with gas When you release the balloon the air gas escapes creating a forward pushing motion called thrust Thrust is created by the energy released from the balloon Sir Isaac Newton says For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction This is the third law of motion When the gas is forced out of the balloon it pushes back against the air outside the balloon which then pushes the balloon forward This is a great experiment that you can try over and over again You could even make it a race between friends or add a stopwatch Test out different shaped balloons or change the angle tightness or even type of string Talk about what happens if your string is droopy or if the string is as thick as the diameter of the straw opening How do those factors change the movement of the balloon So many possibilities Now go have fun experimenting https littlebinsforlittlehands com wp content uploads 2018 01 Flying Cupid Printable pdf February 2023 11

s p on s or ed b y HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Love Your Body Love Nutrition As we step into a new year it is important to reflect on all the wonderful things that have happened Specifically we can thank our body for carrying us through yet another year of life Our bodies are incredible they hold our emotions passions and personality At the same time our bodies also do crazy things like run races climb mountains bake exquisite pastries and digest our food for energy Our bodies need to be refueled to prepare for the next day s adventure When you are young your body has a great sense of when you are hungry and full that s called intuitive eating As we get older our natural signals to eat can become harder to sense and sometimes it leads to eating too much or not enough This can cause us to feel worried about the way we look or feel in our body As we practice gratitude for our body and what it can do for us we want to also appreciate food and how to enjoy it well A great tool for this is using the ABCs to practice intuitive eating with your kids at home A Accept that your child might eat more or less than you anticipated Providing a positive space for your child to try new foods C Close the kitchen after mealtimes This healthy meal boundary allows kids to have opportunities to eat while limiting grazing having alternative meals offered ABC s from Sarah Remmer RD When we properly fuel our body we are then able to do all the things we love So let s keep practicing intuitive eating to love our body and love the nourishing foods we feed it Carah Quigley RDN LD St Luke s Pediatric Children s Dietitian meals and snacks at designated times allows them to be presented with nourishing and fun foods while letting them learn how much they need to be satisfied B Bond with your child at mealtime instead of pressuring them to eat Taking pressure off at mealtimes creates 14 www southernidahokids com Sponsored by

COMMUNITY ARTICLE sponsored by Dry Itchy Winter Skin For many of us winter is a time filled with outdoor fun and activity For some however dry and itchy skin affects our for sensitive skin and absorb into the skin without leaving a greasy feel When the skin barrier is healthy and daily lives limiting activity and enjoyment of this special season Many factors can contribute to dry itchy skin Some are as simple as the soaps we use the lotions or creams we don t apply and medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis and others moisturized it tends not to itch so much If the itch turns into a rash you could be experiencing a condition like eczema or atopic dermatitis There are great new medications for these conditions nowadays Topical steroids are generally the first line of treatment and are very effective for many people and safe when used properly and as advised by your provider If the topical steroids are no longer working for you talk with your local dermatology provider about the newest medications that stop the inflammation at the cellular level and are safe and effective These medications come as a topical ointment oral pills and injections As the weather changes and indoor heating units kick on the humidity in the air dries out We re inside more in that dry air and we tend to feel a little dry Ways to help simple dry and itchy skin is to use a lotion type soap like Dove bar or cream soap If you re sensitive to fragrance opt for the sensitive fragrance free types like Vanicream products I would caution against using body washes that include combination shampoo and body wash as they tend to take all the natural oils off the skin Other very drying soaps are Dial Zest and Irish Spring Limit showers to short warm temperatures as those wonderfully long hot showers baths will dry you out even more Right after you ve dried off apply a heavy moisturizing cream such as Vaseline brand CeraVe Cetaphil or Vanicream These tend to1 be well tolerated TFD_Article pdf 1 6 23 1 54 Hopefully this helps you enjoy the skin you re in this Winter PM Laurel Krupski PA C MSW Twin Falls Dermatology Aesthetics LLC Twinfallsderm com TF Derm Sponsor Page Horizontal February 2023 17
