Body Worn Camera technology has proven to be a crucial tool in our profession As metro continues its department wide rollout we are seeing great results with its integration However because it is new technology it can be easy to forget it is there especially in critical incidents Here are a few tips and reminders based on some common issues The BWC unit has seen When you re going to the restroom have mercy on those poor souls reviewing your BWC by turning the camera off or placing in in your pocket Additionally remember to power the BWC back on or remount it back to the chest plate after exiting the restroom When face timing those gremlins at home to say good night make sure you practice phone position discipline Everything viewed on your personally owned phones becomes subject to public record if captured on a BWC Nobody wants those kiddos to be on the nightly news Remember you have been issued two BWC s to avoid having a dead battery on your camera Don t let it happen to you when you need it the most When being sensitive to privacy requirements in sensitive areas such as hospitals or ambulances keep in mind that when taking law enforcement action the policy does not allow for discretion of deactivation Remember that cameras are to be activated prior to arrival on code 1 2 calls for service and immediately upon dispatch to code 3 calls for service We know its difficult to remember in a chaotic scene Activating it early helps you avoid that Don t forget to conduct a test video prior to deploying each shift so you don t get out in the field with a malfunctioning camera Remember the rear seat camera default is set to not capture data as it is often empty space Refer to the 2 5 RCT for tips on recovering data from that camera after detaining or transporting a subject Remember that cameras are assigned to you You cannot take someone else s and use it as your own Be sure to check for your name and ENO on the back of the camera when transferring at the station

We know many of you have questions about the load bearing vest option that has been recently discussed Armor express the current MNPD ballistic vest vendor has completed their final revisions of the vest to meet departmental needs for approval and shipped it for final review Armor Express has also partnered with Greene Military so that officers will be able to purchase these vests with clothing allowance funds once final approval has occurred IMPORTANT Officers will be expected to maintain vests to ensure a clean and professional appearance in keeping with the standards of current MNPD policy Please do not call uniform vendors asking about the vest until you have been informed that they have officially been approved by the MNPD

Watch this video of a lengthy police encounter arrest that is being live streamed via YouTube To be clear there is NO issue with citizens recording our interactions with the public The more video we have of our professionalism the better However officers who are being recorded in this manner should be aware of this and know that a prolonged live stream event could potentially encourage those watching to show up and become confrontational ambush police officers Just be aware of your surroundings and don t be afraid to ask for backup in these situations Better to have and not need than need and not have Be safe out there https youtu be hmDMZ3p9qI8
