The Call of CalmWhen long days settle in and the afternoon light turns golden, a new rhythm begins to shape our lives, the gentle rhythm of summer. This season, made for recon-nection with nature and with ourselves, becomes all the more meaningful when experienced in a Timber Block home, where lasting comfort meets natural elegance. Thanks to R-30 and R-36 insulation, Timber Block homes deliver exceptional energy eciency, keeping interiors refreshingly cool even at the height of summer. This ther-mal comfort creates a soothing sanctuary, a place where every moment invites you to slow down and simply be. Living summer in a Timber Block home means waking to birdsong, throwing open the windows, and breath-ing in the scent of wood and fresh coee. It’s taking the time to read in the shade, garden barefoot, or nap in a hammock stretched between two tall pines. With living spaces designed to ow eortlessly into the outdoors, the boundary between inside and out fades away. And this is where the sunroom truly comes into its own, capturing the light, the breeze, and the essence of endless summer days. The Art of Slowing Down, in a Home That BreathesFar from the rush of city life, summer in a Timber Block home feels like a return to what truly matters. Every de-tail is crafted for a better way of living — from sustainable materials and exceptional energy eciency to acoustic comfort and calming design. And now, with the addition of a semi-open space like the sunroom, every moment is elevated, bathed in light, air, and quiet joy.“Since we added a sunroom to our Timber Block home, it feels like sum-mer lasts longer. We gather there in the morning for coee, and in the evening to watch the stars. It’s become our favorite room.” — Émilie and Marc, homeowners by a lake in the Eastern Townships7

Perched on the tranquil shores of Lake Joseph, this striking custom home redefines modern living in the heart of cottage country. Designed by Timber Block’s lead design adviser Joshua Counter, the home is a powerful expression of form meeting function, where natural beauty and architectural ingenuity coexist in perfect balance.12

A Vision Beyond Convention This was not a typical build. The homeowners had a bold vision: curtain walls, geometric volumes, minimalist lines—and an un-compromising connection to the land. With no existing Timber Block stock plan even remotely resembling their dream, the team embraced the challenge of building something entirely custom from the ground up. What emerged is nothing short of architectural poetry: clean, linear design wrapped in technical mastery.Lines That Echo the Landscape The rooflines, shallow-pitched and expansive, hug the land-scape rather than dominate it. The structure stretches wide rather than tall, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into the tree-lined surroundings. It’s not just a home in nature, it’s a home of nature. The design even incorporates a unique “razorblade” roofline eect, where the sots and fascia taper together, echoing the natural gradients of the lakefront terrain.14

Page 15

Walls of Glass, Frames of Forest Floor-to-ceiling curtain walls define the main living spaces, blurring the boundaries between indoor and out. These ex-panses of glass don’t just showcase the environment—they reflect it, creating an ever-changing canvas of light, water, and forest. From inside, the panoramic views are uninter-rupted, inviting the outside world to play a constant role in daily life.Innovation at Every Detail This home pushed Timber Block’s engineered technology to its limits. Smooth wood paneling was sourced and over-laid onto the company’s proprietary wall system. Custom an-gles and design elements required meticulous collaboration between architectural and technical teams. Every non-stan-dard decision—from irregular panel joints to the bespoke sots—became an opportunity to innovate.15

Designed for Connection Beyond the technical achievements, this home was conceived as a vessel for connection: family meals, reunions, peaceful lakeside mornings. It’s a space designed not just to impress, but to host a lifetime of memory-making. As Joshua Counter puts it, “It’s an honor every time I have an individual’s trust to design their dream home or cottage”19

A raised gardenCreating a raised garden is a smart and rewarding way to maximize your outdoor space while gaining greater control over soil quality and plant health. To help you get started, and set yourself up for a thriving season, here are a few essential tips on choosing the right soil, maintaining your garden, and reaping a bountiful harvest.22

Page 23

1. Choosing the Right Soil for a Thriving Raised GardenSoil selection is one of the most important steps in creating a successful raised garden. Healthy, balanced soil gives your plants the best possible start—and keeps them ourishing all season long. Here’s what to keep in mind: Soil Mix: An ideal raised garden mix should be light, well-draining, and nutrient-rich. A tried-and-true blend combines: Garden soil – for essential minerals and structure Compost – to enrich the soil and support microbial life Peat moss or coconut coir – to help retain moisture without making the soil too dense You can also add perlite or vermiculite to improve aeration and drainage. A good rule of thumb: mix equal parts (1/3 each) of garden soil, compost, and a light organic material.3-Caring for Your Raised Garden Watering: Raised beds tend to dry out more quickly than in-ground gardens, so consistent watering is key. Aim for deep, infrequent watering to encourage strong, deep root growth. Use a watering can with a gentle spray or install a drip irrigation system to minimize soil disturbance and deliver moisture directly to the roots. Fertilization: To maintain healthy, nutrient-rich soil, replenish your compost annually. In early spring, you can also add organic fertilizers or soil amendments, such as bone meal, sh emulsion, or seaweed extract, to give plants an extra boost as they begin to grow. Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch, like wood chips, straw, or shredded leaves, helps retain mois-ture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil tempera-ture. It also protects the soil surface from ero-sion and adds organic matter as it breaks down. Crop Rotation: To keep your soil healthy and reduce the risk of disease, practice crop rotation each season. For example, avoid planting tomatoes in the same spot ev-ery year; alternate with crops like beans or leafy greens that have dierent nutrient needs and root depths. This simple habit improves soil balance and productivity over time.2- Setting Up the Garden Garden Height: The height of your raised bed plays a key role in both plant health and ease of maintenance. A height between 30 to 60 cm (12 to 24 inches) is ideal—it provides ample room for root development, improves drainage, and reduces the need to bend over while gardening. Orientation: Sunlight is essential. Position your garden so it receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Most vegetables and herbs thrive in full sun, so choose a spot with minimal shade for best results. Drainage: Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water from pooling around the roots. If you’re using a wooden or metal container, drill small holes in the bottom to allow excess water to escape. This simple step helps pre-vent root rot and keeps your plants healthy and thriving. 23

Page 24

4- Harvesting and Additional Tips Regular Harvesting: Pick vegetables as they ripen to stimulate continued production. The more you harvest, the more your plants will pro-duce—especially in the case of beans, peas, and zucchinis, which thrive with frequent picking. Natural Pest Control: Even raised gardens aren’t immune to pests. Keep an eye out for unwanted visitors and opt for natural solutions like introduc-ing beneficial insects (such as ladybugs or lace-wings), using organic insecticidal soap, or setting up simple traps to keep populations under control. Soil Enrichment: At the end of the growing season, give your soil a boost. Mix in compost or organic fertilizer to restore nutrients and prepare the garden bed for the next planting cycle. This yearly step helps maintain a healthy, fertile base for seasons to come.24

Here is a practical guide to help you pair your plants eectively:Hanging planters or containers oer limited space, so it’s helpful to choose compact plants with complementary growth habits and shallow root systems.Useful Flowersto Include andTheir Roles:Tip: Climbing plants like beans or peas can be trained upward using a trellis to maximize space.NasturtiumAttracts aphids away from vegetables, attracts pollinatorsMarigoldRepels aphids and nematodes, attracts ladybugsFrench Marigold (Tagetes)General repellent: aphids, whiteies, nematodesLavenderRepels ies and mosquitoes, attracts beesBasil (also an herb)Repels mosquitoes, ies, and aphids Main Vegetable Recommended CompanionsCherry tomatoes Basil, lettuce, chives Radishes Carrots, lettuce Spinach Strawberries, radishes Lettuce Green onions, carrots, radishes Bush beans Carrots, beets, cucumber Bell peppers Basil, green onions, lettuceGood plant pairings: Some owersare not only beautifuland nectar-rich(attracting pollinators)but also repelharmful insects.A good choice that makes all the dierence for your garden25

Highlighting Your ArchitectureFacade lighting is now a key element of modern out-door design. Grazing lights bring out the natural tex-tures of stone, while recessed wall sconces sub-tly trace the lines of the home’s silhouette. Every architectural detail becomes an opportunity to shine. “We love working with contrasts, leaving some areas in shadow, while others glow like living works of art,” ex-plains a landscape architect.38

Page 39

Creating a Unique AtmosphereThe Art of Subtle Lighting. Gone are the days of harsh, blinding spotlights. Today’s outdoor lighting emphasizes nuance, soft glows, warm tones, and thoughtful contrasts of shadow and light. “Good lighting transforms the atmosphere. It can turn a simple garden into something magical or highlight the el-egance of a facade,” says Léa Dumont, lighting designer. Solar lamps, LED string lights, and sleek wall sconces bring in-stant warmth and character. For a more intimate feel, choose gentle light sources directed toward the ground, pathways, or foliage, enhancing the natural beauty without overpowering it.39

A Bigger Vision, A Deeper PurposeAfter years of savoring the serenity of their custom lakehouse, Judy and Reece Hill began to envision something greater, something that reached beyond their own walls. The peace-ful sanctuary they had created for themselves had ignited a deeper inspiration: to craft a space where others could also discover the calm, beauty, and connection they cherished. When the real estate market started to rise, the timing felt right. Letting go of their Timber Block home was no easy decision, but it proved to be the right one. The successful sale wasn’t an end, it was a fresh beginning. With renewed purpose and vision, Judy and Reece chose to reinvest, not just in property, but in people.54

Page 55

When an expansive parcel of land became available amid the scenic hills of Bristol, Virginia, Judy and Re-ece saw more than just a plot, they saw a blank canvas. A place with the power to bring people together, nur-ture a sense of belonging, and leave a meaningful legacy. That vision blossomed into The Fives: a boutique collec-tion of six private luxury villas designed as a sanctuary for those seeking rest, beauty, and purpose. Named in hon-or of their five beloved grandchildren, The Fives stands as both a tribute and a legacy, an enduring expression of fam-ily love and a heartfelt gift to the community they hold dear. More than mere vacation rentals, these villas embody Judy and Reece’s core values: thoughtful design, warm hospitality, and the belief that true luxury lies in experiences that resonate long after the stay. With The Fives, they haven’t just created a desti-nation, they’ve created a place to belong.55

They understand that true hospitality lives in the smallest details: a warm welcome, personalized touches, the com-fort of a soft throw, or the tranquility of a perfect morning view. At The Fives, luxury doesn’t shout, it whispers. It nur-tures. And most importantly, it lingers long after you leave.56
