Leadership has become a hot topic of recent days As we emerge out of the pandemic and lead our churches to move forward to accomplish the mission that has been assigned to us by Jesus Christ I would like to share some thoughts on being a strategic leader in the context of church leadership The focus of strategic leadership is directed towards the long term sustainability and viability of the local church Strategic leadership comes together when there is unity in direction alignment and commitment that produces long term results This type of leadership is intentional and is directed at influencing others because leadership is influence Influence is accomplished by our testimony our words and our actions The question is not are we leading but what kind of leader are we Another aspect of strategic leadership would involve a dynamic approach to making decisions Decision making is not a one and done transaction for the strategic leader but it is a constantly developing process and the leader navigates the various outcome paths with the goal of reaching the most beneficial results This type of leadership must be flexible and be ready to respond immediately A strategic leader needs to be comparable to a first responder Not only do they run towards the issues but they are evaluating processing information making decisions as they approach the situation Strategic leaders must always keep the bigger picture in mind while understanding the necessary momentum for accomplishing short term objectives is critical for survival To understand our responsibilities as a strategic leader picture three interlocking circles task team and individual Each circle represents an area of need that you must master and each skill contains performance arenas that overlap with the others A leader must develop and maintain the team motivate individual members and ensure that everyone works to achieve the objective A failure of leadership in any one area negatively affects the other two In summary a strategic leader will influence their church in focusing on the short term and long term objectives to accomplish the overall mission as set forth by Jesus Christ Himself This leader will be patience but decisive in an intentional approach to better the church and move the congregation in accomplishing short term goals that push towards a DR MARK A BOYD long term
