The Seminary Co-op’s “product,” if you will, has always been the browsing experience created by our unwavering commitment to stocking and selling books of cultural, literary, and intellectual value. We recognize that, in addition to purchasing books, most of our customers patronize our bookstores in order to interact with a space dedicated to books – a space, as Aleksandar Hemon writes, “where nothing except books seems to exist fully, where everything else is either not important or already in the books.” The first not-for-profit bookstore whose mission is booksellingSEMINARY CO-OP BOOKSTORESClick Here to Support the Co-op4

Gates transforms spaces, instuons, tradions, and percepons. Playing with these poec and systemac interests, Gates has assembled gospel choirs, formed temporary unions, and used systems of mass producon as a way of underscoring the need that industry has for the body.

Shop anyme at semcoop.com12IN PRAISE OF GOOD BOOKSTORESDo we need bookstores in the twenty-rst century? If so, what makes a good one? In this beaufully wrien book, Je Deutsch—the director of Chicago’s Seminary Co-op Bookstores, one of the nest bookstores in the world—pays loving tribute to one of our most important and en-dangered civic instuons. He considers how qualies like space, me, abundance, and community nd expression in a good bookstore. Along the way, he also predicts—perhaps audaciously—a future in which the bookstore not only endures, but realizes its highest aspiraons. In exploring why good bookstores maer, Deutsch draws on his lifelong experience as a bookseller, but also his upbringing as an Orthodox Jew. This spiritual and cultural heritage inslled in him a reverence for reading, not as a means to a living, but as an essenal part of a meaningful life. Central among Deutsch’s arguments for the necessity of bookstores is the incalculable value of browsing—since, when we are deep in the act of looking at the shelves, we move through space as though we are inside the mind itself, immersed in self-reecon.In the age of one-click shopping, this is no ordinary defense of bookstores, but rather an urgent account of why they are essenal places of discovery, refuge, and fulllment that enrich the communies that are lucky enough to have them.In Praise of Good BookstoresJe Deutsch (Princeton University Press)$19.95

Shop anyme at semcoop.com13BY CO-OP DIRECTOR JEFF DEUTSCH“While the book is a tribute to the value of good bookstores, it is only by virtue of our singular bookstores that the book was conceived. Since I rst visited the basement warren in 1994–and certainly since I joined as a bookseller in 2014–the Seminary Co-op has taught me what is to be gained in geng lost in stacks of extensive holdings and in the meditave aenon they spur in our community of readers. The browsing experience brings vast worlds and perspecves within our reach; its eort bears its own reward. In Praise of Good Bookstores is a celebraon, but I hope the book also serves as an argument on behalf of the existence of stores like ours. In 2019, the Seminary Co-op became the rst (and sll only) not-for-prot bookstore whose mission is bookselling. Why? It’s clear that in the 21st century, no bookstore can make a living on the prots from book sales alone. And since readers no longer need bookstores to buy books, we need a nancial model that can support the bookstore’s mission to provide a browsing experience which aords its community the opportunity to explore, to discover, and to delight in books they simply wouldn’t nd elsewhere, including online. If the bookstore is a civic instuon, and I believe the good bookstore is, it will require the establishment of new, durable models that move beyond retail noons of the bookstore’s service to its community. We stewards of the Seminary Co-op know that our bookstores oer the best argument for their persistence. Our not-for-prot model is not just a change in incorporaon, it is an asseron that stores like the Seminary Co-op hold immense cultural value. Good bookstores amplify the curiosity and generosity that sustain them. Your support and encouragement forfy this shared endeavor.” - Je Deutsch

But what is more powerful is how she reorganizes those canonized spaces to foreground the subject-ness of brown bodies and to imbue her female characters with volion. It’s a virtuosic reframing, done with seducve and disarming brevity. A stunning debut.” Renee Gladman Giada Scodellaro’s debut is a ercely original collecon of stories ranging in length, style, and tone—a collage of social commentary, surrealism, recipes, folklore, art—that centers Black women in moments of imminent change. In language that is lyrical, minimal, and oen absurd, the diverse stories in Some of Them Will Carry Me deconstruct inmacy while building a surprising, unnerving new reality of language, culture, consumpon, and loss.

As survivor communies havepointed out, these emphases have too oen only caused more harm. But Danya Ruenbergknew there was a beer model, rooted in the work of the medieval philosopher Maimonides. For Maimonides, upon whose work Ruenberg elaborates, forgiveness is much less importantthan the repair work to which the person who caused harm is obligated. The word tradionallytranslated as repentance really means something more like return, and in this book, returning is arestoraon, as much as is possible, to the vicm, and, for the perpetrator of harm, a coming back,in humility and intenonality, to behaving as the person we might like to believe we are.Scorched Earth: Beyond the Digital Ageto a Post-Capitalist WorldJonathan Crary (Verso)$16

In this bold and insighul book, Dipo Faloyin oers a much-needed correcve, weaving a vibrant tapestry of stories that bring to life Africa’s rich diversity, communies, and histories. The stories Faloyin shares are by turns joyful and enraging; proud and opmisc for the future even while they unequivocally confront the obstacles systemacally set in place by former colonial powers. Brimming with humor and wit, lled with polical insights, and, above all, infused with a deep love for the region, Africa Is Not a Country celebrates the energy and parcularity of the connent’s dierent cultures and communies, treang Africa with the respect it deserves.

Will we understand aliens? What if there isn’t life out in the universe? Is Mars our Plan B? And why is the government spending tax dollars on space programs anyway? Each essay in this genial collecon takes quesons like these as a starng point on the way to a range of insighul, even poignant, observaons. Cockell delves into debates over the inevitability of life and looks to both human history and scienc knowledge to consider what rst contact will be like and what we can expect from spacefaring sociees. He also oers a forceful argument for the sympathies between space exploraon and environmentalism.

When her fatherdied before they had a chance to get the project started, Liz decided she would try it without him.She didn’t know what to expect from volunteering with court-involved youth, but as a high schoolteacher she knew that teenagers are drawn to food-related acvies, and as a daughter, she believedthat if she and the kids made even a single dinner together she could check one box o her father’slong, unnished to-do list. This is the story of what happened around the table, and how one dinnerbecame one hundred dinners.

Twenty-nine years old, she was a dynamic, boundary-breaking chef and a bright new voice for change in the food world. Aer the taping wrapped and before the show aired, Fa was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. Not one to ever slow down or admit defeat, the star chef vowed to spend her nal year traveling the world, eang delicious food, and making memories with her loved ones. But when her condion abruptly worsened, her plans were sidelined. She pivoted, determined to make her nal days count as she worked to tell the story of a brown girl chef who set out to make a name for herself, her food, and her culture. This triumphant memoir is at once an exploraon of the sense of wonder that made Fama so special, and a shining testament to the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, it is a story about what it means to truly live, a profound and exquisite portrait of savoring every moment.

From the devastaons of climate change to the horrors of gun violence, from rampant transphobia to the widening wealth gap, from the lack of health care to the lack of housing, the challenges facing the next generaon can feel insurmountable. But change, even revoluon, is possible; you just have to know where to start. In Beer Than We Found It, best-selling author Frederick Joseph and debut author Porsche Joseph make the case for addressing some of the biggest issues of our day. Featuring more than two dozen interviews with prominent acvists, authors, actors, and policians, this is the essenal resource for those who want to make the world beer than we found it.
