is traditionally held on the third Wednesday of Octobereach year. At this annual event, we recognize and honorour La Cumbre Veterans (some fifty plus membersstrong) and provide financial support to the Folds ofHonor Foundation. Folds of Honor was founded in 2007by Colonel Dan Rooney, former F-16 fighter pilot andPGA professional. The Foundation’s mission is to leaveno family behind on the field of battle by providingeducational scholarships to the children and spouses ofour fallen and disabled Armed Forces and FirstResponder families. Due to a variety of reasons the La Cumbre Patriots/FOHCommittee has decided not to hold our Patriot’s Dayevent this year. We want to thank those of our memberswho have participated in our past events. We very muchappreciate everyone’s support and look forward towelcoming you to our future La Cumbre Patriot’s/Foldsof Honor Days. With the uncertainty surrounding theproposed renovations of our golf course and clubhousein 2025 we anticipate that our next event will occur inOctober 2026.La Cumbre Patriot’s/Folds of Honor DayLAFolds of Honor Speaker Christian Meza and Retired Lt.Col Bill Baker of the USS Ronald Reagan, 2023.THE DIVOT | LA CUMBRE PATRIOT’S/FOLDS OF HONOR DAY

The Folds ofHonor Foundation is very grateful for the ongoingsupport from our La Cumbre membership families. Thisyear the applications for scholarships from the Folds ofHonor Foundation has doubled from just two years ago. Thus, the need for Folds of Honor scholarships still liveson for these Folds of Honor families. For those who would like to provide support to the FOHFoundation, we have set up a La Cumbre FOH accountto accept donations from our members. THE DIVOTBACK TO CONTENTStennis tipInspired by Bruce, I want this month's tip to focuson the serve and using both arms effectively. Thenon-dominant arm is crucial in creating leveragefor a powerful serve, even though it doesn't get tohit the ball. Keeping that tossing arm up andtucking it in at the right moment helps generatebalance and momentum, making the hitting arm'sjob much easier. One fun drill is to keep yourtossing hand up as long as possible - think of it asyour Statue of Liberty moment before swinging!Just be careful, or you might have a "Jim Copusmoment," like when a sparrow almost flew into hisarm during the club championship, on its way tobuild a nest! Player Highlight: Bruce McKaig This month’s spotlight shines on Bruce McKaig, avalued LC member known for his ambidextrousserve and his dedication to the Super Seniors andMen’s Inter-club B teams. Recently, Bruce and hispartner Steve Drummy won 2 out of 3 matchesagainst Santa Barbara Tennis Club. A retiredfirefighter, Bruce is always ready to help, and hisstrong spirit is an asset both on and off the court.Thank you, Bruce!

Words of Wellnesswith jarratT rouseHi friends and happy Fall. Summer flew by, and I hope you have been enjoying thesunshine as much as I have. I recently was having a conversationwith a friend of mine, and she was pointing out how the feeling offrustration in our lives isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We typicallyperceive frustration as a negative feeling, so I was interested tohear her arguments. After our conversation I left with the feelingthat frustration is not just a negative emotion we experience, buta tool for growth in our lives and I wanted to share that with youall today. Here are five ways in which we can shift our perspectiveon frustration and use it as a positive in our lives:1. Motivation and Drive:Frustration can serve as a powerful motivator. It can push you tofind solutions to problems, overcome obstacles, and achieve yourgoals. The discomfort of frustration often drives us to act andmake necessary changes. I know I have personally felt this type ofmotivation spurring from frustration. The hard part can be gettingthrough the debilitating phase of frustration. Once you shift yourperspective and act on that frustration, you will see how powerfula motivator it can be.2. Problem-Solving Skills:When you feel frustrated, you’re more likely to engage in criticalthinking and problem-solving. This can lead to the developmentof creative solutions and innovative approaches to challenges.Using Frustrationto FacilitateGrowthTHE DIVOT | FITNESSBACK TO CONTENTS SKIP TENNIS

Page 32

THE DIVOT | FITNESSBACK TO CONTENTS3. Resilience and Perseverance:Dealing with frustration helps build resilience. Each time youovercome a frustrating situation, you strengthen your ability tohandle future difficulties, making you more resilient and betterequipped to face life’s challenges. I don’t take this one lightly. Itseems simple on the surface, but this concept defines who youare today. The way you learn and adapt throughout life has givenyou a foundation of knowledge and experience on how to moveforward next time and in future situations. Next time you’re goingthrough the wringer, try thinking of frustration as your mentor.Embracing frustration as part of the learning process can lead tosignificant personal and professional development.4. Self-Awareness and Goal Clarification:Frustration can increase self-awareness by highlighting areaswhere you may need to improve or change your approach. It canreveal your triggers, limitations, and areas where you might needto develop new skills. This has been a big one for me in my life. When frustration comes on quickly or I start to feel over annoyedor short, taking a moment to realize what caused that feeling hashelped me become a better person, partner and father. Handlingfrustration in this way can then help clarify your goals andpriorities. When you’re frustrated, you may reassess what you’restriving for and why, leading to a more focused and purposefulpursuit of your objectives. It is the beautiful marriage of self-reflection and self-betterment.5. Enhanced Empathy and Emotional Regulation:Experiencing frustration can make you more empathetic towardothers who are facing similar challenges and effectively canimprove your overall emotional regulation skills. This increasedempathy can improve your relationships and communicationskills. Learning to cope with and navigate frustration can help youhandle other negative emotions more constructively.

Summer has come and gone and with it a lot of fun changes inthe Fitness Center. We saw a big influx in usage with a lot ofcollege and high school students off for summer break. Westarted a handful of new fitness class offerings including Aqua fit,Yogalates, and Yoge Restore 75. If you haven’t given them a try,we recommend you take a look at the fitness schedule below andsign up for a class that works for you.We are here to support you in your fitness and wellness goals soplease don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions aboutclasses or any other inquiry.Along with the new classes, we welcomed a new group fitnessinstructor, Kelly Poston. Kelly brings positive energy and amindful approach to all her classes. Be sure to say hi to her if yousee her around campus, she may beat you to it however!I can’t help but think about my girls when talking about all of this. They don’t currently have the ability to process frustration like wedo. I take it upon myself to help them practice these fivetechniques in a way that works for them. I get down to their level, listen to them, comfort them, help them to breathe, and thenencourage them to keep going or try again. This process helpsthem to emotionally regulate, be more self-aware, buildresilience, become a problem-solver and motivates them to keepgoing. By recognizing and harnessing the positive aspects offrustration, you can turn this challenging emotion into a powerfultool for personal and professional growth. With love,Jarratt RouseSummer Recap, News and NotesTHE DIVOT | FITNESSBACK TO CONTENTS
