With youth struggling to overcome pandemic-related learning loss, Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia stepped up to provide access to high-quality academic enrichment programming aer school and throughout the summer. rough our innovative Call to Action Literacy Initiative, our Clubs engaged youth in hands-on learning opportunities steeped in the Science of Reading.Recent reports highlighting a sharp nationwide decline in reading and math scores, indicate that stemming summer learning loss for Philadelphia’s at-risk youth is paramount. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress’(NAEP) long-term trend assessment administered in fall 2022, 13-year-olds lost 4 points in reading and 8 points in mathematics compared to 2019-20. Black students faced greater declines, losing 7 points in reading and 13 points in mathematics. A comparison of major urban school districts shows that Philadelphia’s 2022 NAEP scores were signicantly lower than most other major cities, with 19 out of 24 outperforming Philadelphia’s 4th-grade reading scores and 17 out of 24 outperforming Philadelphia’s 8th-grade reading scores.e Call to Action Literacy Initiative, originally launched in 2013, addresses this crisis head-on. rough activities focused on encoding, decoding, structured reading/writing, and independent reading/writing, this program uses a multi-sensory approach to language, simultaneously employing kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learning modalities to build phonemic awareness, phonics, uency, vocabulary, and comprehension. is summer, over 1,300 youth participated in our literacy programs, engaging in skill-building through Readers eatre, themed weekly activities, and exciting literacy-based games.
