INTERNATIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATION - CANADA REGION 6 OTTAWA - WWW.IPAOTTAWA.COM I hope that this message finds everyone in good health. This is the first Newsletter for 2022. Normally, we try to publish a Spring and Fall edition, however, we just did not have the human resources available. Monthly brunches have been held since the beginning of the year and attendance is close to what it was before the pandemic. As a rule, we try and plan brunches in different parts of the region each month, less so in the Winter months. When a brunch is planned we ask members to RSVP so we inform the restaurant how many tables to set up. There have been occasions when only three-quarters of those who said they would attend did attend. I would ask members that if at the last minute they decide not to attend to please send an email to ipaottawa@rogers.com. This will alleviate the delay in ordering food believing that more members are ex-pected to attend. Across the IPA, the number of members travelling has increased exponentially over the past two years and more and more countries seem to be opening up to visitors and more events are being organized for members, including a Region 7 (Montreal) 50th Anniversary Friendship Week (19 – 29 May 2023). For more information about the Montreal Friendship Week visit www.ipamontreal.com. As some of you may remember, in 2020 there was an all-member vote to approve IPA Canada Statutes (bylaws and Directives) and to elect a Board of Directors. This was done to meet the requirements of the Cana-da Not-for-profit Corporation Act. Regrettably, in early 2022 our legal firm informed us that since neither members nor assets were transferred to the corporation in 2014, when the corporation was first set up, the Cor-poration was nothing more than an empty shell. As a result of the foregoing, IPA Canada was forced to revert to a per-2014 governance structure returned de-cision-making for IPA Canada back to Regional Presidents. This is not necessarily a bad thing as each region is represented. New Statutes for IPA Canada were approved at the Oct 2022 Annual General Meeting and will be posted on the National Website soon. Also early in 2022, a new region, Region 17 (Nova Scotia) was approved. Before the new region was created, all Nova Scotia members belonged to Region 16 (Atlantic Canada). Here’s looking to a great 2023 for all members and the International Police Association. President’s Message hps://www.facebook.com/groups/2103002076588289/

Earlier this year, a survey was sent out to members. The intent of the survey was an attempt to gauge the likes and dislikes of members as it relates planned activities. Surprisingly, only 25 members responded and of those, 13 submissions were anonymous. The Special Events Officer will use these survey results to plan upcoming activities. It should be noted that if a minimum of members do not sign up for events, the event will be cancelled. INTERNATIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATION - CANADA REGION 6 OTTAWA - WWW.IPAOTTAWA.COM Travel Section—Feature Property Germany: IPA House—Bork After nearly three years of little to no travel for most of us, it is a welcoming sight to delve into the IPA Hosting Book. It was not a difficult choice to select Germany, which has 9 official IPA Facilities and one other accommodation. Germany has direct flights from Toronto and Montreal to Frankfurt, Germany, where one can easily hop on a train, which is attached to the airport in Frankfurt or rent a car. Germany is well known for its famous castles, restaurants, spas and walking/hiking/cycling routes, plus Octoberfest, not to mention cultural events such as operas and plays. This country is highly recommended by the author, who has traveled there numerous times and partook in all of the mentioned activities. This IPA House would be a perfect base for hanging your head at night after exploring the numerous cities, sights and partaking in tours and thermal spas by: Tesesa Holmes Reservation Contact Details and Address House Manager & Bookings: Manfred Bittrolff Telephone +49 259 262166 Cellular +49 171 9249253 Email Address buere@ipa-bork.de Webpage http://www.ipa-bork.de OR http://www.ipa-deutschland.de Special Note Cost: 15 Euro a night per person. It is located on the Northeastern part edge of the Ruhr, within the quiet area of the police training center with castles, museums and picturesque scenery nearby. The building was renovated into an IPA apartment and an IPA Clubhouse. It is in North-west Germany, 266 kms from Frankfurt, close to The Netherlands border (205 kms) and accessible by train from 10 other cities. There are local vehicle rental agencies that provide a GPS system. The author had frequently used SIXT vehicle rental agency with no problem.

IPA Internaonal New IPA Emblems Justification: Arthur Troop, the founder of the IPA, designed the star logo of the Association, using a globe within a police star and wrapped around by laurel leaves. The logo was adopted as the official emblem of the Asso-ciation at the first international Congress in 1955 in Paris. Section UK applied copyright to the design in 1974. The IEB registered the star and roundel logos as trademarks in 2012 in the UK and internationally in 2013. When Arthur designed the original star logo, the sec-tions were all in Europe and over the years, whilst the majority are still in Europe, the Association has ex-panded around the globe. Requests to amend the logos have been made over the years to address the balance of the continents shown on the logos, but they were not adopted. IEB Motion: The IEB believe that the time is right to rectify the matter and recognize new revised IPA logos. The new logos include all the major land masses around the globe. This updated version also includes Japan. The existing logos may continue in use, until the close of the World Congress 2027, when only the revised de-signs will be permitted. Region 6 Activity Challenge In 2021, due to the prolonged Covid pandemic, IPA Region 6 created a Fitness Challenge to motivate regional members to keep physically active. The challenge was to walk, hike, run, row, paddle, swim, bike, snowshoe, ski, etc (indoor fitness machines counted) the circumference of our region which is approximately 719 kms, within one year. Brian Sullivan was our top contender with 3,177 kms. He was able to cycle year round in Ecuador. Bill Murrell slugged it out within our region, mainly rowing, biking and walking his way to an impressive 2,836 kms, four times over our Regional circumference! Louis Chiasson came in 3rd place with a total of 2,438 kms. Louis was the first one to complete the Regional circumference within a two month period. Gilbert Anctil was in 4th place with 2,408 kms. In September 2022, we began the challenge again and renamed it the Activity Challenge. We have twelve par-ticipants so far, who have already traversed the sum total of 2,340 kms! One member has already surpassed our Regional circumference of 719 kms! Bravo Zulu to JP Vincelette, who has biked his way to an amazing 820 kms during the month of Sep and a bit of Oct 22. The Activity Challenge will run from 01 September 2022 to 31 August 2023. Our goal this year is to have the group traverse the entire circumference of the world, a mere 40,075 kms. In order to achieve this goal, we natu-rally need member participation. So far we have knocked off 2,000+kms from this goal. We will need more Regional 6 members to participate and reach our 40,000+kms goal. Even if you manage a few kms a day, it all counts. Region 6 has over 120 members. We can do this! Don’t wait. Sign up today for our Activity Challenge and let’s see what our region can accomplish. To register for the IPA Region 6 Fitness Challenge please send an email to ipar6challenge@gmail.com The Fitness Challenge coordinator is Teresa Holmes, the Regional Secretary. She will respond back within a short period of time. An Excel spreadsheet has been created to track kilometers (kms) and names. Participants are requested to submit their kms on a monthly basis. INTERNATIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATION - CANADA REGION 6 OTTAWA - WWW.IPAOTTAWA.COM The Procedure for Travel Assistance aims to standardize the process of helping IPA members (both individuals and groups) requesting assis-tance when travelling and visiting IPA sections worldwide. Common requests include hotel/accommodation/dining recommendations, visiting police stations, ride-alongs, meeting local members and being hosted, car hire and places to visit. It is not necessary to use this form when personal contacts are already in place (e.g visiting friends) or in case of an emergency. Complete a different form for each country you are travelling to. An International Travel Form on our website HERE. Is an International Travel Form necessary? International Travel A short look on the events and news page of the IPA International webpage will illustrate the variety of op-tions available, ranging from Friendship Weeks in Italy or Japan, to special interest events you can join in Spain or Ireland. Whether you fancy hiking in the Austrian Alps or getting to know the treasures of Sri Lanka, the IPA is able to offer something for everyone. In addition to organized group travel options, the IPA also offers assistance when travelling on your own or with your family: with the help of a travel form, many members take the chance to get to know IPA members in other countries on either a short stay in a city, or while touring a country. A truly unique chance to see the world from a local’s perspective, and to exchange with fellow police officers what policing in their country entails. I’m planning a trip, when should I submit your travel form? The IPA International Procedure for Travel Assistance recom-mends at least three (3) months for group travel and one (1) month for individual (family) travel. The foregoing deadlines are normally sufficient, however, some countries receive many more visitors that others so the earlier you can submit your travel form, the better your chances. If you have any questions about travel, contact the Region 6 Travel Officer at ipaottawa@rogers.com, subject line TRAVEL.

INTERNATIONAL POLICE ASSOCIATION - CANADA REGION 6 OTTAWA - WWW.IPAOTTAWA.COM In early September the region was contacted by a young Swe-dish police officer (Kajsa), who said she was already in Ottawa and that she took a one-year leave of absence from policework to play professional ringette in Ottawa. Kajsa also said that she needed to find a job, preferably in a po-lice station in Ottawa to help support herself while she was here. A few of us met with her to discuss her options and it was dur-ing this meeting that she informed us that she had to return to Sweden for family reasons. While she was disappointed, she says she hopes to return to Ot-tawa one day to play ringette. Sweden Netherlands In mid-October the region had a visit from Joop and Ines who came to visit thir daughter Femke who is studying for a semester at the University of Ottawa. Joop is employed at the National Training Center Over-Amstel in Amsterdam. After four days in Ottawa, the trio departed for Hunts-ville, via Algonquin Park and then down to Niagara Falls. After spending time in Niagara Falls, the trio drove to Montreal and Joop and Ines caught their flight back to Amsterdam while Femke returned to Ottawa. IPA Visitors to Region 6

The International Police Association is a friendship organization for members of law enforcement, whether in employment or retired and without distinction as to rank, position, gender, race, language or reli-gion. We have around 372,000 members in nearly 100 countries, of which 65 are affiliated National Sections, and we are represented on 5 continents. The purpose of our organization is strictly cultural, social and recrea-tional. At no time does the Association take part in any matter of de-partmental policy, discipline or unionism. The IPA creates an opportunity for cultural exchange and contacts on a local, national and international level. The IPA is a tremendous organ-ization for members and their families who wish to travel anywhere in the world. Want To Become a Member?
