Fairy Tales & Puppet Shows
Lesson Objective
Students will learn how to summarize a story while developing their comprehension skills.
Background Information for Teacher
This lesson is designed to take place over several days. Work with the pocket chart. A few materials should be added
each day. Developing the puppets and presenting the puppet shows may each take several days.
Student Prior Knowledge
Old socks for puppets
Arts and craft supplies for decorating their puppets, scene, and background
Construction paper
Markers, color pencils, crayons, paint
Other materials used to decorate and create puppets (i.e glue, scissors, etc.)
Summary Prewriting worksheet (Step 3)
Phone, tablet or other type of recording device
Step-by-Step Guided Lesson
Step 1: Start Video

Step 2: Teach Lesson
What is a fairy tale? Encourage the student to share their favorite fairy tales. If the student is uncertain about what a fairy
tale is, review the examples below together.
The Princess and the Pea
The Little Match-Seller
Hansel and Gretel
The Little Mermaid
The Emperor's New Suit
Little Red Riding Hood
The Ugly Duckling
Have the student select one or two fairy tale stories to read. Read the story aloud with assistance from the student. Once
you have read the story have the student select which story is his/her favorite and explain why. Also, be sure to discuss
the moral of each story.
Next, tell the student that they are going to create a puppet show using their favorite fairy tale. The puppet show will be a
summary of their fairy tale. Introduce what a summary is by defining it as “a brief account of story and giving the main
points. It is not telling everything. It is only putting together important information”.
Have the student complete the Summary Prewriting worksheet.
Once the student has completed the Summary Prewriting worksheet, have them use the information on the worksheet to
write a short summary. Help the student when necessary. This can be completed the next day if needed.
After the student has written their summary, they can then begin to create their sock puppets. Remind the student that the
sock puppets should represent the characters in the fairy tale. After they have completed their sock puppets they can
create their background scene and any props. Please allow several days to complete these steps.
Once their puppets, background, and props are completed, the student can present their puppet show. Be sure to record
the show so the student can enjoy watching the show too.

Step 4: Review. Start the next lesson with the game or activity attached below for review so the student can
demonstrate understanding of this lesson before moving forward.
What really happened? (offline) activity
Have the student retell and/or write one of their favorite Fairy Tales. Encourage the student to get the their version of the
fairy tale a different ending or problem. If the student decides to write their retelling, have them draw illustrations to
accompany the new fairy tale.
