19MCABEEMEDIA.COMAcademy For Advanced Studies Oers Training In Over 40 Industry PathwaysToday, high school students have an array of options when it comes to gaining industry knowledge and post-secondary credit. rough the dual-enrollment program, Career, Technical and Agricultural Educa-tion (CTAE) pathways, and the abundance of college and career academies in the state, Georgia’s high school students’ access to high-demand trades and industry is greater than it’s ever been. Henry County is fortunate to have one of the larg-er college and career academies in the state, located in downtown McDonough. e Academy for Advanced Studies (AAS) oers 42 pathways through its schools of business and design, wellness and community services, engineering power and automation, and creative studies. Many of these programs lead to certication through ex-amination or coursework, aording high school students more than a high school diploma upon graduation. is past school year, 147 AAS students earned an industry credential. Currently, the AAS partners with Clayton State University, Gordon State College, and Southern Crescent Technical College to teach college courses on-site at their charter school. Both Clayton State University and Gor-don State College permit all student types to attend their courses oered at the AAS, including traditional and adult students. While Southern Crescent Technical College has a campus next door to the Academy for Advanced Studies, the college oers eight certicate programs for AAS high school students on-site. Programs include auto collision repair assistant, criminal justice fundamentals, emer-gency medical technician, gas tungsten and metal arc welding, logistics and supply chain technician, nurse aide, prep cook, and salon and spa support specialist. Here, students can also get workforce and job expe-rience through the AAS’s work-based learning program and school-based enterprises like the Academy’s Barks and Bubbles grooming business, that’s oered through the veterinary science pathway. Academy’s Barks and Bubbles oers the public a variety of services for their furry friends, including baths, whitening treatments, nail trims, and grooming. Students are introduced to a variety of dog breeds, sizes, ages, and temperaments at Academy’s Barks and Bubbles. “Some scenarios students experience include medical issues, facing mortality, gaining patience, and working with some dogs who have behavioral issues. Sometimes on rare occasions, they may also need to advocate for a dog who may be neglected,” Emily Sutton, the veterinary science instructor and operator of the Academy’s Barks and Bubbles explained. “Working here allows our high school students to determine if veterinary work is really for them.” Most students attending the AAS are enrolled in more than one industry area or pathway in hopes of exposing them to more options and helping them to navigate a career path. is coming school year, the AAS will be expanding course options to include cloud computing and music technology and will continue to expand technical cer-ticate of credit program oerings through Southern Crescent Technical College. 25MCABEEMEDIA.COM►Approximately a thousand Henry County area high school students participate in the state-funded dual enrollment program each year. is program allows students to complete up to thirty hours of college course-work at no cost. Dual-enrolled stu-dents receive high school and college credit for the coursework, hence the name dual enrollment. While most students are pursuing dual enrollment credit to get a head start on college, a small percentage are using the grant to earn their high school diploma through the Accel-erated Career Program (ACP). is branch of dual enrollment is speci-cally designed for students interested in high-demand technical and skilled-trade training. To earn their diplo-ma, students enrolled in public high schools must complete two years of academic coursework and either two technical certicates, a diploma, or an associate degree at Southern Crescent Technical College (or another unit of the Technical College System of Geor-gia). “(ACP) is excellent for students who have the goal of a technical path or for students who are seeking a high school diploma option outside of the tradi-tional route,” Nathan Bell, the director of admissions and student communica-tions for SCTC explained. Some of SCTC’s popular Accelerat-ed Career options include automotive technology, diesel mechanics, welding, and cosmetology. Depending on the program, many students can complete the post-secondary requirements for ACP in one year. For more information on ACP or dual enrollment, check out the full interview with SCTC on the Henry Focus Podcast and additional information online at sctech.edu, tcsg.edu, and gafutures.org. McDonough Presbyterian Children’s Academy(678) 709-5116 I 427 McGarity Rd. McDonoughStart Ahead,Start Ahead, Stay Ahead!Stay Ahead! Impact Academy opened its doors in 2011 to 150 students well before fully-online education had been adopted by public school districts within the state of Georgia. Prior to 2011 Henry County high school stu-dents could only take select courses online but did not have a fully-online option. After several inquiries from parents and students requesting an all-online option, Henry County Schools began working on adopting a fully- online program. “During my time at Impact Academy, we learned that every student had a story and they needed exibility for a variety of reasons. It was not a decision they just jumped into,” Steve Thompson, founder and former principal of Impact Academy, explained. After the rst year, Impact Academy grew to 650 students, and during the height of the COVID pandemic, Impact Academy ab-sorbed 12% of Henry County Schools student population, equating to over 6,000 students. While Impact Acad-emy helped its own school system navigate online education, Thompson and others at Impact Academy con-sulted with over twenty other dis-tricts during the COVID pandemic. “Steve had experience consult-ing with other schools before COVID and had already spoken at Cornell University and Harvard University,” said Joan Prisk, the lead counselor at Impact Academy. Starting at nearly a decade before the pandemic, Impact Academy was at the forefront of online education, Impact Academy’s blended online learning strategies have been utilized and adopted by other districts and published in scholarly journals and books. Over the next few years, Impact Academy will scale back to only offering fully online class schedules for sixth to twelfth grade. This academic year, Impact Academy has shifted from a program to an independent school and will graduate its rst class in May of 2025. 30 HENRY FACTBOOK I 2024-2025 Situated off the McDonough Square in a historic century old cottage resides a coffee house that prides itself on pro-viding a welcoming atmosphere for patrons to fellowship, and fresh high-quality coffee. Micah and Alicia Hodges, owners of Queen Bee Coffee company in McDonough serve up a variety of coffee drinks and roast two dozen coffee varieties off-site at their roastery and coffee shop in Forsyth, Georgia. Queen Bee Coffee Company’s start began all from a birth-day gift purchase for Micah. After he began roasting he was hooked and he and his wife decided to bring that passion to business. In July of 2012 the Hodges sold their rst bag of coffee in an open market on the McDonough Square. Six months later the Hodges moved inside the marketplace and began selling their coffee, including their beloved Panama Joe coffee variety. “I still remember a woman telling me how great the Pana-ma Joe coffee was and adding that she thought it would be a money-maker,” Alicia said about their early days within the market. Their signature Panama Joe coffee is roasted with Mexican coffee beans and perfectly avored with vanilla mousse, cara-QueenCoffeeeof

Queen Bee sets itself apart by not only roasting their own coffee but by also sourcing directly from a variety of coffee bean farms from ten different countries that hand pick their coffee beans. One country includes Honduras where the Hodges donate a percentage of their sales to clean water construction projects. “They’re (farmers) not using a machine, ev-erything is tripled picked by hand, which con-tributes to the quality we’re able to deliver with the beans we’re roasting,” Micah explained. Coffee farms that use machines are picking all the beans off the trees, including beans that are not ripened and are not ready to be picked. Other factors contributing to higher quality coffee, include their dedication to roasting in small batches, and selling directly to the consumer. “Coffee’s peak freshness starts to subside after about six months,” Micah explained. Outside coffee, Queen Bee also sells avoca-do toast, chicken salad toast, pastries, cinna-mon rolls, and freshly baked bread. Providing a place for people to gather is also at the heart of their business. Patrons can partake in free fun special events planned throughout the year including trvia, movie nights, and Christmas in July! 48 HENRY FACTBOOK I 2024-2025PIEDMONT HENRY EXPANSIONStaff Reports:Stockbridge, Ga. (May 2024) – Recently, Piedmont Henry Hospital broke ground on a $212 million expan-sion that will transform the hospital’s campus and help care for the citizens of a rapidly growing community. The project will add a new patient tower and will have 96 new/additional inpatient rooms. The hospital’s new bed license is for 355 beds. Additional surface park-ing will be added, as well as three additional Operating Room suites, giving the hospital a total of 14. The ex-pansion of the OR will provide more access with shorter wait times for high end surgical procedures. The extra patient rooms will also help improve wait times in the emergency department, which is one of the busiest in the Piedmont system, with nearly 75,000 visits annually. “We are often at capacity now and this expansion will help us serve our patients, and the community, better,” said David Kent, CEO of Piedmont Henry. “We have grown with Henry County, and we will continue to grow to continue providing world-class, patient-cen-tered care to the communities we serve well into the future.” During construction, there are no expected impacts to patient or visitor access at either the North or South Tower lobbies, or the emergency department. There may be some limited disruption to parking. Patients will be asked to arrive a few minutes early for scheduled appointments once construction begins. “We take the responsibility of caring for our patients and the residents of this community very seriously,” said Kent. “We’ve made a lot of progress over the past few years. In addition to being designated a Level III Trau-ma Center, we’ve increased our use of robotic assisted surgery, brought in world-class physicians, and maxi-mized space, both on campus and adjacent, to provide safe, high-quality care. An expansion of this magnitude is the next step for us.”Construction is expected to be completed within two and a half years. While many of today’s youth grow up playing team sports like basketball and baseball, fewer are introduced to tennis, a sport many adults play well into their golden years. “We want to get kids on the court as early as possible and for them to realize the opportunities available, including college scholarships,” Mon-ica Johnson, the co-founder of the non-prot, explained. While tennis has a reputation for being expen-sive because it usually requires private lessons, Above The Net has set out to break down that barrier by providing more affordable group les-sons and clinics, while also offering assistance for under-served youth. Above The Net is not shying away from the little ones either and welcomes children as young as three to participate in a tennis for tots pro-gram on Saturday mornings. “We want to make the sport accessible, and we also want to help bridge the gap between their early years and high school since many are only introduced to tennis much later, as teenagers,” Johnson said. 58HENRY FACTBOOK I 2024-2025►Watering Can Mentorship Teaches Valuable Life SkillsHCPRD Maintenance Sta Spearhead Youth Mentorship Program Cristy McAbeeHenry County Parks and Recreation’s maintenance sta are pouring into ado-lescence in Henry County through a free mentorship program coined the watering can. This seven-week evening summer program for youth 12 to 17 years old teaches teamwork and trade skills, includ-ing craftsmanship, gardening, basic mechanics. The program was launched last year and has had over 50 kids enroll. “The goal is to instill skills into kids that they’re missing today,” Bryan Dixon, deputy administrator of park services, explained. “It’s all curriculum-based …. we teach everything from changing a tire to gardening.” This year, the watering can class worked with the county extension oice’s master gar-deners to develop horticulture skills, including identifying weeds and methods for yielding healthy crops. Each one planted and constructed their own vegetable garden and compost heap. The watering can has flourished into other programs including adult workshops and kids regis-tering for other youth recreation programs through the county. “Parents were starting to stick around with their kids because they were interested in what we were teaching, and that has led to a few adult workshops on a variety of do-it-yourself projects,” Dixon said. Not only are kids benefitting from the watering can mentorship program, it’s also bringing aware-ness to the variety of skill sets required to work within a mainte-nance department. “We’re the only organization, as far as we know, in the nation, that has developed a program that’s led by maintenance sta,” Dixon said. “The program has been a win-win for everyone involved; it’s helped kids develop new skills but has also highlighted the important skill set and vital role in the com-munity maintenance professionals h a v e .” Registration for the next sum-mer Watering Can Class will start in Spring 2025. 76HENRY FACTBOOK I 2024-2025►Healing and Guiding Women With Love, Encouragement, and ScriptureVWLAFor nearly a decade, Virtu-ous Women Life Academy (VWLA) has been empower-ing women to reach their full potential through a unique blend of biblical teachings, personalized en-couragement, and dedicated men-torship. This distinctive approach has seen VWLA positively impact over 120 women, including divor-cees, single mothers, and women with a history of incarceration. “We connect and mentor wom-en, especially single mothers and working women, through encour-agement, spiritual, emotional, and other types of support,” June Wood, founder of VWLA, explained. “We’re helping them to be successful indi-viduals, wives, mothers, and com-munity leaders.” VWLA was born out of a love for people, and the skill of help-ing loved ones discover their life’s purpose and path. Wood, who mentored relatives dealing with homelessness and life issues, knew there was a greater need for women struggling, witnessing first-hand many living in shelters while helping her loved ones. “I realized all of these ladies had varying reasons for being in their diicult circumstances, so that was how Virtuous Women’s Life’s Academy began,” Wood said. After helping many women fi-nancially, Wood realized that there was a greater and more compre-hensive need involving mentoring and partnerships that could meet other needs.
77MCABEEMEDIA.COM►VWLA VWLA oers comprehen-sive support services, including counseling referrals, transitional housing, personal and career assessments, higher learning as-sistance, and parental coaching. VWLA assists women in address-ing a broad spectrum of chal-lenges, from improving self-es-teem and overcoming depression to spiritual care, personal care, and financial peace. “Sometimes it can be as sim-ple as helping someone become more intentional so they’re not overcommitting themselves and can stay focused on what’s im-portant,” Wood said. “There are organizations giving away physi-cal things but to touch their heart and mind and to put them on a path forward is what’s making an impact and dierence.” VWLA will host a Tea Party fundraiser on October 12, 2024, at Stockbridge Community Church. 80 HENRY FACTBOOK I 2024-2025Stockbridge Couple Celebrates Diamd AnniversarySeventy Five Years Of MatrimyJune 10, 1949Cristy McAbeeLeonard and Opal Hudgens are the grandparents of Cristy McAbee, the publisher. The Hudgens have four grandchilden and four great-grandchildren.
81MCABEEMEDIA.COM Leonard and Opal Hud-gens met in 1948 at their church and were married on June 10, 1949, at the Justice of the Peace in Dallas, Georgia. That day, several other couples were in line to be wed, and the hopeful and anxious bride in front of Opal and Leon-ard was only 17 years old—the same age as Opal. “She came out crying, and we discovered you had to be 18 years old to be wed without parental consent, so my friend (who was with us) told me to just move my birthday back a year. When the judge asked for my birthday, I took her advice, and the rest is history,” Opal chuck-led. Both of their parents knew their plans of getting married, but they had their doubts. “They knew we were getting married but didn’t think it would last,” Opal remarked. Opal and Leonard spoke about one of their most memo-rable dates at the Lakewood Fair during their courtship. Opal, Leonard, and Leonard’s family attended the fair together, and Opal recalled a ashback of the two young jokesters on the Fer-ris wheel. “We came to the very top, Leonard and his cousin started rocking our bucket; it was so terrifying. I’ve never been on a Ferris wheel since; they both had me almost in tears,” Opal exclaimed while staring at her husband, who cracked a slight grin. “ Over the past 75 years, the Hudgens have experienced a life-time of fond memories, including unforgettable trips to Hawaii and Vancouver. The pair visited Hawaii in 1973, where they at-tended luaus, drove all over the island, and visited landmarks, one of which they were locked inside! “We went to the Punchbowl cemetery to pay our respects to those who had lost their lives during the attack on Pearl Har-bor and didn’t pay attention to a sign that displayed the time the cemetery closed. When we tried to leave to go out the gate, we realized we had been locked in,” Leonard chuckled. After locating the caretaker’s residence, Opal and Leonard were able to leave the cemetery. The Hudgens shared fond mem-ories of and stories of raising their three girls Scherry, Charlotte, and Sharon, each two years apart. Their oldest daughter Scherry was born just days before their one-year wed-ding anniversary on June 5, 1950. One of Scherry’s most cherished memories growing up was when her dad remodeled the entire upstairs of their home where the girls all stayed. “It was everything you could have dreamed of…. white and pink rose-covered wallpaper and three new vanities for the three of us. It was a labor of love, and when it was nished it was t for a princess. We felt like royalty,” Scherry said. Sharon reminisced about one Christmas when Eastern Airlines (where her father worked) had been on strike and money was tight that holiday season. “That year my mom was very creative and used her S&H Green Stamps to purchase our Christmas presents,” Sharon explained. “It was a great Christmas, my sisters and I each had our own play fur mink stoles, plastic high-heel slippers, a baby doll with a stroller, which I used as a go-kart racer, and a tea set.” Sharon, the tomboy added that her mom wasn’t too pleased with her creativity with the baby doll stroller. During the 1950s and 60s the Hudgens lived modestly like most families did and got by at times on a budget of ve dollars a week for groceries. The couple also rented for many years while they saved money to buy their rst home in 1957 for less than $12,000. “You got by on what you had,” Leonard said “I was making less than a dollar an hour when Opal and I rst got married and I had to work part-time jobs to make ends meet.” The Hudgens enjoyed their rst home for thirty years before mov-ing to Stockbridge in 1987, a city they still call home today. One of the darkest periods of their marriage took place in 2003 when they lost their middle daugh-ter Charlotte to who battled cancer for many years. “That was truly the saddest time in our lives,” Opal said. “Burying your child is the hardest experi-ence any parent can ever endure,” Leonard added. While the Hudgens have experi-enced many emotions and hurdles over seventy-ve years, they believe the values that have kept their marriage strong are their faith in God, their commitment to one an-other, and their own freedom and independence. Their curious grandson Shan-non asked them once how they had made it this long. And Leonard laughed and told him “We stay out of each other’s way!” While the pair believe inde-pendence is important, they also believe their faith in God is another essential component. Leonard and Opal have been members of Eagles Landing First Baptist church for over twenty years. When asked about one another they both believe the other one is the rock of the family. “She’s our rock and is always dependable and has kept our fami-ly steady,” Leonard said. “Hist integrity, trust, and de-pendability are the traits I think that most exemplify him,” Opal said. “I’ve always known he was the support of our family and that I could count on him.”
82HENRY FACTBOOK I 2024-2025►As you approach retirement, understanding key aspects related to nancial planning, Social Security benets, and lifestyle adjustments are crucial for a smooth transition into this new phase of life. Nearing retirement age is a signicant milestone, and adequate preparation can make all the dierence in ensuring nancial security and peace of mind during your retirement years. Among the various consider-ations, maximizing Social Security income is a critical aspect that demands attention and strategic planning. One of the most important things to know as you near retirement is the timing of when to start claiming Social Security benets. While you can start receiv-ing benets as early as age 62, your monthly benet amount will be permanently reduced if you claim be-fore your full retirement age (FRA), which is typically between 66 and 67, depending on your birth year. De-laying your benets beyond your FRA can result in an increased monthly benet amount, up to a maximum at age 70. erefore, understanding the implications of when to claim Social Security benets is crucial in optimizing your income stream during retirement. Another key consideration is your overall nancial picture and how Social Security ts into your retire-ment income plan. Social Security benets are designed to supplement your retirement savings, not serve as the sole source of income. erefore, it is essential to assess your other sources of income, such as pensions, 401(k) or IRA accounts, and any additional investments, to create a comprehensive retirement strategy that maxi-mizes your nancial stability. Additionally, being aware of spousal and survivor benets is vital for married couples. Spousal benets allow a spouse to receive up to 50% of their partner’s Social Security benet, providing an opportunity to boost overall household income during retirement. Survivor benets oer nancial support to the surviving spouse aer the other spouse passes away, highlighting the importance of considering these benets in your retirement planning. Understanding the taxation of Social Securi-ty benets is another crucial aspect to consider. Depending on your total income and ling status, a portion of your Social Security benets may be subject to federal income tax. Being aware of how your benets are taxed can help you plan accord-ingly and potentially minimize the tax impact on your retirement income. Moreover, incorporating Social Security claiming strategies, such as le and suspend or restricted application, can further optimize your benets and maximize your overall retirement income. Con-sulting a nancial advisor or utilizing online cal-culators can help you determine the best claiming strategy based on your individual circumstances. In conclusion, as you near retirement, it is essen-tial to equip yourself with the necessary knowledge and tools to make informed decisions regarding So-cial Security benets and overall retirement plan-ning. By understanding the implications of when to claim benets, integrating Social Security with other income sources, considering spousal and sur-vivor benets, managing taxation, and implement-ing claiming strategies, you can eectively leverage your Social Security income to support a comfort-able and nancially secure retirement.
