Cusco: 3 nightsWayqecha Biological Station: 1 nightManu Biological Station: 14 nightsDear Students,This summer, you are invited to join me in theAmazon rainforest of Peru to studybiodiversity in a unique ecosystem thatcontains far more species per unit area thanany other area on earth. More birds, moretrees, more butterflies, more ants, more frogs, and more everything. You will not just learn about biodiversity; youwill experience it. We will take early morninghikes to watch screeching scarlet macaws, blue headed parrots, orange cheeked parrots,dusky-headed parakeets, and many otherbird species. We will walk through therainforest listening to the calls of howlermonkeys defending their territory, the eeriewhistling piha, and the crash of leaves astroops of capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, and dusky titi monkeys swing from tree totree, moving through the forest. The remoteness of the rainforest will allowyou to connect more fully with cycles of lifevery different from that experienced in urbanareas in temperate climates. You can reflecton forces that shape tropical ecosystems andexamine, up close, species and processes notfound anywhere else in the world. While in Peru, we will stay at a researchstation managed by the AmazonConservation Association. Research at ManuBiological Research Station includes trailhikes, camera trapping for rainforestmammals, and water quality and fieldsurveys, among others. I look forward to you joining me in Peru.PROGRAM ITINERARYFACULTY LEADER MESSAGE PROGRAM ITINERARYFriday, June 12Depart Austin for Lima, PeruSaturday, June 13Depart Lima for CuscoCheck in at the accommodationsWelcome dinnerSunday, June 14Transfer to Wayqecha Biological Research StationSafety orientation and cloud forest hikeMonday, June 15Wayqecha canopy trail hikeTransfer to Manu Biological Research StationNight hikeTuesday, June 16Manu Biostation introductory forest hikeClass – Camera Trapping TechniquesSet up camera trapsNight hikeWednesday, June 17Bird biodiversity hike Class – What is an EcosystemThursday, June 18Class – Myrmecology: Ants of Manu Biostation VolleyballGo on a road evening hike - how to find rarelyseen army antsFriday, June 19Class – The Raid Census Hike: Surveying army antraidsVolleyball - optional Saturday, June 20Class – Fungi hike - The Wood Wide Web:Discovering fungi in the rainforestPillcopata Pizza outingDr. Mark ShepherdAssociate Professor and Chair Earth and Environmental Science mark.shepherd@austincc.eduHighland CampusSunday, June 21River tour (Trail 10 to the waterfall)Camping in the Amazon rainforestsMonday, June 22River tour (Trail 10 to the waterfall)Camping in the Amazon rainforestsTuesday, June 23Class – The Forest as Pharmacy: Guided medicinalplant walkClass – Energy and Climate ChangeWednesday, June 24Class – Amphibians of the AmazonAmphibian walkThursday, June 25Visit Santa Rosa de Huacaria indigenouscommunityFriday, June 26Class – Energy and Climate ChangeSaturday, June 27Group project presentationsSunday, June 28Group project presentationsMonday, June 29Depart Manu Biostation to CuscoCheck in at the accommodationsTuesday, June 30QorikanchaFarewell lunch SaqsaywamanWednesday, July 1Program ends.
