About the Author

My name is David Cook. As I write this, I'm age 62, married to Raewyn, a wonderful woman from New Zealand and we live in Victoria, BC, Canada. We have no children so we adopted Tina, a tiny black cat from the SPCA who at 19 years young, still plays with her rolled up foil candy wrappers. In 2018 we adopted Xolo, a young lab cross rescue from Mexico, thanks to our friends and neighbours Margaret Purdy and Malcolm Macartney. They found Xolo during one of their many volunteer animal sterilization clinics through the joint efforts of the Mexi-Can Vet Project and Jaltemba Bay Animal Rescue. When they first met Xolo, they thought she and I would make a good pair. This was very fortuitous because Xolo has literally become my right hand. Within months of her arrival, I've taught her to pick up things that I accidentally drop and she brings them to me. Our training was thanks to Rob at Friends Fur Ever Professional Dog Services. It took him more time training me than Xolo.

I have been a storyteller since I retired early (in 1997 at age 38) with a long-term disability pension due to having a degenerative and incurable neurological disease. I like to keep busy, which helps me to feel positive and productive. I also had this desire to become a professional writer. I had lots of spare time, especially during the winter months when the weather wasn’t as nice. That was when I bought my first personal computer. Within a year, I got a job as a columnist with a regional sailboat-racing newspaper.  After several of my articles were published, the paper suffered its demise and I lost my cushy job.

Since then, I have written for pleasure. Writing about my past brings back many fond and funny memories; and fortunately, there are few sad ones.

Sharing my challenges, solutions and lessons learnt in life with others is mental therapy for me; and based on feedback from family and friends, my stories are enjoyable to read, inspirational, and will hopefully benefit others.
