Dear readers, collaborators, and advertisers,
This is our first digital edition of 2024. Time has passed quickly, and just a little over
a year ago, our founder passed away. As a team, we are proud to say that despite
our difficulties in 2023, we have managed to keep the legacy alive. Of course, this
has been possible thanks to your unwavering support.
Thank you for your continued trust and loyalty. We look forward to serving you in
the years to come.
The current edition of our publication includes a diverse range of content focused
on health, wellness, and beauty. You'll find articles written by experts in medicine,
therapy, and beauty that offer exceptional treatments and alternatives to promote
your overall well-being. We hope that among these articles, you'll find the
treatment that resonates with you and suits your needs.
Living in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica is a delightful experience and can be
compared to discovering the fountain of youth. It is a blessing to inhale clean and
fresh air, swim in the ocean, waterfalls, or streams, savor fresh and organic food,
and appreciate the vibrant greenery of our mountains.
We take pride in assisting you to explore new places, such as the bee tour in Playa
Hermosa and the charm of the mangrove tour. Additionally, we are happy to share
testimonies from those who have chosen to love a simpler, happier life, making
Pura Vida a more attainable lifestyle.
Summer is in full swing, which means that there are plenty of festivals, shows, and
beach parties to enjoy in this paradise. For instance, Envision, Planetario Aventura,
or simply relaxing by the beach. This is the perfect time to learn to love your life
and fully embrace your experience.
In addition, we are pleased to share good news about the SOMOS Foundation. They
have been carrying out various actions to improve the community, and soon The
Journey will be opening an educational center project. We are excited to see the
positive impact that this will have on the community.
As usual, we ask that your ecological footprint be as small as possible if you visit us
or are already part of the community.

The production is based on Ken Nickell's song
"We're All Just Stardust" and is a remarkable
audiovisual show. It was selected as the third-best
entry in an international contest, after a couple of
productions from the Czech Republic and
Germany. The show is freely available to any
planetarium worldwide that can project full-dome
videos.
A video adaptation of the production is available
on YouTube, following the link shown below. While
it is in a rectangular format, it provides a rough
idea of the production's content.
On January 21st, 2024, the show premiered in
Costa Rica at a venue in Uvita, which Planetario
Aventura hosted. The event was held at La Colonia
Restaurant and Hotel El Tecal in Playa Chamán,
close to the famous whale tail beach. During the
event, Ken Nickell joined John Chantry and
presented a special version of their live music show
called "Ken & John." The mobile Planetario
Aventura was also present at the event.
Mr. Ken Nickell, a microbiologist from Punta
Mala in Ojochal, was inspired by the clear night
skies above his home and the sequel Cosmos
series by Neil deGrasse Tyson to write the song
"We’re All Just Stardust".
He is part of a community of expats and retired
people who enjoy the area. Another talented
musician in the community is John Chantry, known
for his exquisite way of playing the keyboards
which has earned him great recognition. Seven
years ago, Ken and John teamed up to produce
live music shows, and they have continued to do so
in many venues in the area.
The rest of the recipe was prepared by Tommy
Merry, a talented sound engineer and musician
who spent some time living in Costa Rica with his
wife. He took the Stardust song and created a
complete arrangement, adding his own touch by
playing the electric guitar.
Later on, Marco Ávalos joined the team. He is an
astronomer and videographer who owns the only
mobile planetarium in Costa Rica, named
“Planetario Aventura”. He loves to use the
immersive 360º characteristics of the dome to
introduce art and music into it.
In 2023, planetariums worldwide celebrated the
Centennial of the Planetarium, commemorating
the invention of the first planetarium projector in
Jena, Germany, in 1923. As part of these
celebrations, Planetario Aventura produced a
whole dome format show that could be shared with
any planetarium across the world.

Based in the South Zone and operating since 2007, Techos Tropicales Palmex is the exclusive
distributor of Palmex synthetic leaves in Costa Rica. With a crew of only 8 persons and being
located in a remote village, it has proudly served many of the most famous eco lodges of the country
(Tabacon Thermal Resort, Luna Lodge Turismo Sostenible, Lapa Rios Lodge, for example),
government institutions like the INA (Instituto Nacional de Aprendizaje), historic and cultural sites
(Guayabo, Museo de Oro, Museo de los Ninos) and hundreds of beautiful hotels, restaurants and
houses. The key to that success? Lots of dedication, an excellent team and a fantastic product.
Made in Canada and installed on roofs in over 50 countries on 5 continents, Palmex produces a
very realistic-looking, eco-responsible, low maintenance and long-term thatch solution that respects
the beauty of traditional palm leaf roofing. Its leaves are free of any toxic substances, designed
according to ISO 9001-2008 norms, and they undergo a special anti-UV treatment, which translates
into great energy savings on air-conditioning and ventilation. Palmex product's lifespan is estimated
at 50 years or more. Nonetheless, should the circumstances require it, Palmex leaves can be
dismantled and reused. They are totally recyclable. Even if, for the question of duration and
warranty, they are not made only of recycled plastics, they are, as a polypropylene material, a
recycling product of the residues generated by the transformation of raw petroleum into fuel. This is
why it has been granted the most important international and national certifications in eco-building,
such as Intertek, CSTB, ISO 9001, Bodycote, etc.
PALMEX products have been meticulously designed to provide a permanent solution to the
problematic issue of the massive over-harvesting of natural resources throughout the planet for the
purpose of building exotic roofing. They help minimize the adverse effects of economic growth and
tourism development on the natural environment, making them a responsible choice for any project.

Nestled along the rugged Pacific coastline of Costa Rica,
the laid-back town of Dominical is an irresistible
destination for travelers seeking a perfect blend of surf,
sun, and serenity. Tucked away between the lush
rainforests of Marino Ballena National Park and the
rolling waves of the Pacific Ocean, Dominical is a coastal
haven that captures the essence of Pura Vida living.
Getting There:
Reaching Dominical is an adventure in itself. The town is
approximately three hours from Costa Rica's capital, San
Jose. Travelers can opt for a scenic route along the Pacific
Coast Highway, providing breathtaking views of dense
jungles and glimpses of wildlife. Alternatively, local
airlines offer domestic flights to the nearby Quepos La
Managua Airport, followed by a picturesque drive
southward.

Quepos are available for the more adventurous souls.
These options provide a cost-effective means of
transportation and an opportunity to soak in the stunning
landscapes.

Dominical is known for its warm hospitality, which is one
of its main attractions. Although Spanish is the official
language, many locals are proficient in English, which
makes it easy for international visitors to communicate
with the community. However, it is always appreciated
when visitors try to speak a few basic phrases in Spanish
to connect with the locals.

is vital to be mindful of the strong currents, especially
during certain times of the year. Lifeguards are stationed
at popular surf spots, providing an additional layer of
security.
As with any travel destination, it is advisable to take
basic precautions. Travelers should monitor their
belongings, be cautious, and follow local guidelines.

NEW ADDRESS: UVITA
NEXT TO SIBU
The Journey School's expansion directly responds to its
success and the community's embrace of its
educational model. With campuses now in San Mateo
and the eagerly anticipated new campus located at
Costa Ballena, the school's reach and impact continue
to grow. This latest expansion, driven by franchise
owners who are business leaders, entrepreneurs,
developers, and parents passionate about the Journey
model, brings this innovative approach to education
to the Costa Ballena community.
The new Costa Ballena campus, located about
halfway between Dominical and Uvita, is poised to
open its doors to students in grades 1-12 on August
19th, 2024, with plans to welcome preschool and
kindergarten students soon after that. Designed to be
state-of-the-art in its physical structure and
educational philosophy, the campus will feature a
multi-purpose gym, gardens, play spaces, and
sizeable classrooms, all within walking distance of the
beach.
In addition to a comprehensive sport and after-school
program, the school offers robotics and tutoring in
English, Spanish, and Math, ensuring a well-rounded
education for every student.
In line with the Journey School's ethos of inclusivity
and community engagement, the Journey School of
Costa Ballena will exhibit a profound commitment to
serving local students through comprehensive
scholarship programs, welcoming 30 percent of its
student population through scholarship funds,
ensuring that quality education is attainable for a
diverse array of students.
As the Journey School of Costa Rica continues to
expand, it remains committed to its founding
principles: to provide an education that is not only
academically rigorous but also deeply rooted in
social-emotional learning, bilingual education, and
the pursuit of each student's passions. With its
innovative approach and dedication to community
and student well-being, the Journey School of Costa
Rica is shaping the future of education, one student at
a time.
Journey School of
Costa Rica at Costa
Ballena
A Beacon of Innovation in Education
Recognizing a pressing need within the community
for an educational paradigm that went beyond the
traditional, the Journey School of Costa Rica was
founded in 2016. Its mission was clear from the
start: to anchor education in social-emotional
learning while promoting bilingualism and a
curriculum driven by passion and excitement. With
an uncompromising spirit of joy and adventure,
Journey School seeks to approach the education of
its students by embedding this mission at the core of
its curriculum.
The Journey School's approach to education is
innovative and inclusive, offering a Reggio
Emilia-inspired preschool program that seamlessly
transitions into a project-based learning framework
from kindergarten through grade 12. This unique
blend ensures that students acquire academic
excellence and develop the critical emotional and
social skills necessary for success in today's world.
The school's flagship campus in Tamarindo is a
testament to its success and commitment to
quality education. Accredited by MEP in Costa Rica,
Cognia in the United States and the International
Baccalaureate:(IB) program internationally,
it reflects the school's dedication to maintaining
the highest educational standards.
The Journey School emphasizes personalized
learning environments where social-emotional
learning, bilingual education, and project-based
learning thrive. The concept of restorative justice,
guided by conscious discipline for younger students
and more formalized restorative practices for older
ones, underscores the school's holistic approach to
student development.

UVITA
Uvita is a captivating coastal town along the untouched
shores of Costa Rica's Pacific coast. It invites travelers to
experience the perfect fusion of nature, adventure, and
tranquility. With its lush rainforests and stunning beaches,
Uvita is a hidden gem that immerses oneself fully in Costa
Rica's lifestyle.
History and Cultural Heritage:
Uvita has a rich history that dates back to the pre-Columbian
era when indigenous communities inhabited the region. The
town's name, "Uvita," is derived from the Spanish word for
"little grape," reflecting the abundance of grape-like
formations in the local palm trees.
In recent decades, Uvita has transformed from a quaint
coastal settlement into a thriving destination. The town's
development has been mindful of preserving its natural
surroundings, resulting in a harmonious coexistence between
human habitation and the pristine environment.
Getting There:
Uvita is situated on the southwestern edge of Costa Rica,
which makes it easily accessible from different points in the
country. If you're coming from the capital, San Jose, you can
enjoy a scenic four-hour drive with picturesque landscapes on
the way to Uvita. Alternatively, you can take a flight to
Palmar Sur Airport with local airlines and then take a short
and scenic drive to Uvita.
For those who want a more immersive journey, buses and
shuttles are a cost-effective means of transportation. These
options offer an opportunity to witness the diverse beauty of
Costa Rica and set the tone for the natural wonders that await
you in Uvita.
Language and Hospitality:
Uvita is a welcoming town that embraces the Pura Vida spirit
and greets visitors with open arms. Although Spanish is the
official language, English is widely spoken, making it easy for
international travelers to communicate and navigate the town.
The warm hospitality of Uvita's residents is well-known and
creates an inviting atmosphere for travelers. It is encouraged
to engage with the local community, and knowing a few
basic Spanish phrases can enhance the experience. The
genuine friendliness of the people in Uvita adds an extra
layer to the overall atmosphere, leaving visitors with lasting
memories of a place where hospitality meets the splendor of
nature.
Safety in Paradise:
Safety is of utmost priority in Uvita and the town is committed
to providing a secure environment for both residents and
visitors. The close-knit community of the city fosters vigilance
and support, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.
The beaches in Uvita, including the famous Whale's Tail
sandbar, are generally safe for various water activities.
Lifeguards are stationed at popular spots to ensure an added
layer of security. It is advisable to take basic precautions, as
with any travel destination, but travelers can confidently
explore the town knowing that the local community prioritizes
safety.
Marino Ballena National Park:
The Marino Ballena National Park is the centerpiece of Uvita's
charm. It is a marine and terrestrial sanctuary that spans over
13,000 acres of protected land and ocean. The park is named
after the humpback whales that migrate through its waters,
providing visitors with a unique opportunity to witness these
majestic creatures.
One of the park's highlights is the famous Whale's Tail
sandbar, a natural formation resembling a whale's tail. During
low tide, visitors can walk along the sandbar and encounter
the diverse marine life that inhabits the park's waters.
In addition to this, the park's terrestrial areas feature hiking
trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints. This allows travelers
to appreciate the lush biodiversity of Uvita's rainforest. The
commitment to conservation within Marino Ballena National
Park underscores Uvita's dedication to preserving its natural
treasures for generations to come.
Exploring Nature and Culture:
Uvita is a coastal paradise that offers a perfect blend of
adventure, nature, and culture. The Marino Ballena National
Park, situated here, is a haven for snorkeling and diving
enthusiasts. You can also take Whale and Dolphin watching
tours or visit Caño Island.
To explore the rainforest, head to the heart of Uvita, where
you can discover hidden waterfalls and enjoy canopy tours.
The Uvita Waterfall is a beautiful, enchanting natural wonder
that offers a refreshing escape. You can swim in the
rejuvenating pools surrounded by lush greenery.
Uvita is also home to vibrant local markets that showcase
handmade crafts and traditional Costa Rican delicacies.
Engaging with locals will allow you to delve deeper into the
rich cultural tapestry of the area, where stories are shared and
connections are forged, adding depth to your overall
experience.
In summary, Uvita is a coastal sanctuary that promises a
memorable journey where you can enjoy the beauty of Costa
Rica every sunset, and the waves echo the rhythm of Pura Vida
living.

Reviving the Rhythm
COSTA RICA FREE MAGAZINE #93
With the rainy season around the corner, it's crucial to
ensure that your vehicle's braking system is working
optimally. Wet and slippery roads can significantly
increase stopping distances, making it more
challenging to brake. Therefore, brake maintenance
becomes even more important during this season. This
article will provide you with essential tips on brake
maintenance, emphasizing its significance, particularly
during the rainy season.
1. Regular brake inspections are vital for maintaining
your vehicle's braking system. A professional should
check your brakes at least twice a year, with an
additional check before the rainy season. The brake
pads, discs, and fluid levels should be examined during
these inspections. Worn-out brake pads and discs can
significantly reduce braking efficiency, particularly on
wet surfaces.
2. Brake pads are subject to wear and tear and require
periodic replacement. The replacement interval may
vary based on driving habits and conditions, but a
general guideline is to replace brake pads once they
thin to less than a quarter of an inch. In wet conditions,
thinner brake pads have a reduced ability to generate
the necessary friction for stopping the vehicle effectively.
3. Checking brake fluid regularly is crucial as it is
hygroscopic and absorbs moisture over time. Excessive
water in the brake fluid can lead to decreased braking
performance and potentially cause brake failure. The
manufacturer's recommendations should be followed
when replacing brake fluid, typically every 1 to 2 years.
Fresh brake fluid ensures optimal brake performance,
particularly during the rainy season when response
times must be sharp.
4. Cleaning and Lubrication
The brake system can accumulate dirt, grime, and
other particles, especially during wet conditions.
Regular cleaning of the brake components can
prevent buildup that may hinder brake operation.
Additionally, certain brake system parts, such as
caliper slider pins, require lubrication to function
smoothly. Ensuring these components are clean and
adequately lubricated can enhance braking
responsiveness.
5. Avoiding Puddles and Standing Water
Driving through puddles or standing water can splash
water onto the brake components, temporarily
reducing their temperature and effectiveness.
Whenever possible, avoid large puddles and standing
water during the rainy season. If you must drive
through water, gently apply the brakes afterward to
help dry them out and restore braking performance.
Importance of Brake Maintenance During the Rainy
Season
Maintaining your vehicle's brakes, especially during
the rainy season, is crucial. Wet conditions reduce tire
traction and introduce the risk of hydroplaning, where
the car skims over the water's surface, leading to a
loss of control. Properly maintained brakes can
significantly reduce these risks, ensuring your safety
and that of others on the road.
Conclusion
Brake maintenance is a crucial aspect of vehicle
upkeep that requires extra attention during the rainy
season. To ensure that your brakes are in optimal
condition and to give you the confidence to navigate
wet roads safely. Always remember that the state of
your brakes can mean the difference between a safe
stop and a potentially hazardous situation. Regular
maintenance is not just a recommendation; it's
necessary for safe driving in all conditions, particularly
during the rainy season.

Health, Wellness, and Beauty go hand in hand
when we tune into the World of Apiculture (caring for
bees), and we are a team of holistic practitioners
and earth guardians ... specifically Bee Guardians!
Carlos Guadamuz and Heather Sanden are known
as the Bee Guardians in the Osa region of Costa
Rica due to our quality services offered for bee
rescues and relocations, educational workshops and
tours, sustainable care methodology, and conscious
harvesting and co-creation of products with both
Melifera (honeybees) and Melipona (native stingless
bees) species.
Did you know ...
There are around 20,000 known bee species
worldwide. Approximately 700 are native to Costa
Rica.
Bees are essential for the health of the people and
the
planet. The critical role of bees as pollinators
and in producing honey and medicinal products
makes them vital for health, beauty, well-being, and
food supplies.
Have you ever wondered what is in your products?
The ingredients? The quality? The cleanliness? The
effectiveness?
Perhaps even the consciousness surrounding their
source?
Well, perhaps it is a bee-beautiful time to consider
one of the eldest forms of natural medicinal
sources ... the bees! We should consider them in the
ways we live outwardly and how we treat nature, as
well as what we utilize both on our skin and within.
In addition to their role in producing the “liquid
gold” that we know as honey, the bees create an
array of skin-healthy compounds while constructing
and maintaining their hives. These products include
propolis, bee pollen, bee venom, and royal jelly,
each with unique potential health, beauty, and
well-being benefits.
Author: Carlos Guadamuz and Heather Sanden
Due to the conscious and sustainable methods, we
work with the bees, and when the bees are
plentiful, we can offer the following:
Bee pollen - Bee pollen is a mixture of flower
pollen, nectar, enzymes, honey, wax, and bee
secretions. It contains over 250 biologically active
substances, including proteins, carbs, lipids, fatty
acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and
antioxidants.
Honey - contains enzymes, antioxidants, non-heme
iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, vitamin B6,
phosphorous, riboflavin, and niacin, which has
healing and beautifying properties.
Beeswax - from pure beeswax candles that cleanse
the air to beeswax balms and salves has
anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory properties
that provide hydration and protection.
Propolis - tinctures, salves, and sprays .. oh my ...
these products have the most widespread benefits
for our immune systems (and entire well-being) and
help fight against bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Pura Bee Amor has learned to harness the power of
science, innovation, and bees to create wellness
products unlike any other brand. We offer a line of
naturally sourced, safe, and effective wellness
products that use ingredients from the bee and its
environment to restore your body, mind, and spirit
to its healthiest state.
We are dedicated to offering healthy and natural
products to our consumers while educating the
world about the power of bees.

#savethebees and #sharethelove.

Manual Lymphatic
Drainage Massage

reductive massages
Reductive massages have become increasingly
popular among people who want to reduce their
measurements and improve their body's appearance.
This massage method targets specific body areas
where fat tends to accumulate, such as the abdomen,
thighs, hips, and arms. By using intense and precise
movements, reductive massages aim to break down
fat deposits and promote their elimination, which can
result in a more toned and slimmer silhouette.
One of the primary benefits of reductive massages is
their ability to enhance blood and lymphatic
circulation. These massages stimulate blood flow,
which helps to transport oxygen and nutrients to the
cells, promote the elimination of toxins, and reduce
fluid retention. This not only contributes to the loss of
inches in problem areas, but it can also improve skin
texture and firmness.
Reductive massages provide not only physical benefits
but also emotional and psychological advantages.
After receiving these messages, many people have
reported an improvement in their physical
appearance, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
Therapeutic touch and personalized attention during
the session can help reduce stress and anxiety,
ultimately promoting overall well-being.
When it comes to reductive massages, it can be
challenging to find a reliable and professional place
that can provide a satisfying experience. However,

Rodrigo Villalta, a renowned chef born in San José,
Costa Rica, discovered his passion for cooking early.
Significantly influenced by his grandmother, Dona
Catalina, he spent countless hours in the kitchen,
absorbing her culinary wisdom and falling in love with
the art of gastronomy.
At 18, Rodrigo began his formal culinary journey by
enrolling in the prestigious Instituto Nacional de
Aprendizaje (I.N.A.) to pursue his studies in
gastronomy. Throughout his time at I.N.A., he honed
his skills and refined his culinary talents, preparing
himself for a bright future in the culinary world.
After completing his studies, Rodrigo embarked on a
journey leading him to some of the country's most
remarkable restaurants and hotels. His dedication and
skill in the kitchen caught the attention of the producers
of a popular T.V. show called "Sabores TV," which
showcased the diverse flavors and cuisines of Costa
Rica and the whole world. Recruited as a T.V. chef,
Rodrigo charmed audiences with his infectious
personality and exquisite dishes. His time on the show
he lasted for an impressive five years, elevating him to
celebrity status within the culinary scene of Costa Rica.
After that pass for national media, Rodrigo returned to
the kitchen rush again; he traveled to Spain to receive
special training in healthy industrial processed food.
When he returned to Costa Rica, he worked as a
Director of Heatly food service at the prestigious School
Name "Gredos San Diego."
After five years as the head of Kitchen, Rodrigo started

In the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, where the
verdant canopies meet the azure skies, the Envision
Festival has become a symbol of creativity,
community, and sustainability. Located in the coastal
paradise of Uvita, the festival has grown over the
years from a small gathering of like-minded
individuals into an international convergence of art,
music, and environmental activism.
This article traces the remarkable journey of the
Envision Festival, exploring its origins, growth, and
impact on attendees and the local environment. The
festival was born from a vision to create a platform
that blends various elements of human creativity with
nature's unrivaled beauty. Initially launched in the
early 2010s, it aimed to bring together a community
of artists, musicians, and environmentalists to
celebrate the interconnectedness of all living things.
From the beginning, the festival was more than just
an event; it was a movement towards a sustainable
and conscious lifestyle, encapsulated in its motto:
"Viva La Experiencia!"
Envision has experienced remarkable growth in the
size and diversity of its offerings. What began as a
small gathering has evolved into a four-day
extravaganza that attracts thousands of people
worldwide. The festival now includes various musical
genres, from electronic to reggae, and workshops on
yoga, permaculture, and holistic living. This
multidisciplinary approach has expanded its appeal
and created a unique environment where education
and entertainment merge.
One of the core values of the Envision philosophy is
its commitment to sustainability and environmental
stewardship. The festival organizers have introduced
various green initiatives to reduce the event's
ecological impact.
These initiatives include using biodegradable
materials, a ban on single-use plastics, and the
promotion of a leave-no-trace ethos among
attendees. Furthermore, Envision has actively
supported local conservation efforts, such as
reforestation projects and wildlife protection,
demonstrating its commitment to giving back to the
land that hosts it.
The Envision Festival in Costa Rica has significantly
impacted the surrounding communities, both
environmentally, culturally, and economically. It has
boosted tourism, catalyzed local development, and
provided a platform for Costa Rican artists and
artisans to showcase their talent on a global scale. The
festival's focus on cultural exchange and community
building has fostered a sense of global citizenship
among attendees, encouraging them to think and act
beyond their borders.
As the Envision Festival looks to the future, it aims to
embrace new technologies and ideas to enhance the
participant experience while remaining true to its
roots. The festival faces ongoing sustainability and
growth challenges, which have prompted innovation
in how it operates and interacts with its environment
and community.
In conclusion, the Envision Festival in Costa Rica is a
powerful example of collective vision and action. It
blends music, art, and environmentalism to create a
unique space in the festival landscape that inspires
and transforms those who experience it. As it
continues to grow and evolve, Envision remains a
symbol of hope and a model for the future of
conscious community gatherings.

OJOCHAL
Ojochal is a charming coastal town that offers travelers a
delightful mix of natural wonders, culinary delights, and
cultural richness. It's a hidden gem surrounded by lush
rainforests and secluded beaches.
Getting there is easy. If you're coming from Uvita, it's just a
short, scenic drive of approximately 15 kilometers to reach
Ojochal. Local buses and shuttles also offer accessible routes
from Dominical and Uvita to Ojochal.
History and Cultural Heritage:
Ojochal is a town with a fascinating history that has been
shaped by a diversity of cultures. Originally, it was inhabited
by indigenous communities, and the name "Ojochal" is
believed to have indigenous origins that reflect the town's
historical connections to the land. Another root of the name is
said to be linked to the Ojoche tree.
The town's historical tapestry is deeply intertwined with both
indigenous and global legacies, serving as a testament to the
town's dedication to preserving its cultural heritage. Ojochal
provides a more nuanced exploration of the past, showcasing
the diverse cultural influences of Costa Rica and the world. This
is largely due to the immigration of French Canadians to the
community.
Culinary Treasures:
Located on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, the unassuming town of
Ojochal has earned the title of "Culinary Capital of Costa
Rica." It is distinct from its counterparts, Uvita and Dominical,
and beckons travelers on a gastronomic odyssey that
transcends the ordinary.
Ojochal's culinary scene is a vibrant mosaic where local and
international flavors converge to create a symphony for the
senses. Gourmet establishments line its streets, each being a
culinary maestro crafting dishes that tell a story of the town's
cultural richness and commitment to unparalleled dining
experiences.
Ojochal invites discerning palates to explore its diverse menu

I do care a lot about my health and my family’s
health. We must all feel our best to manifest our
best attitude and ability. Living in Costa Rica, I am
surrounded by people who naturally want to feel
better, too. We each have our ideas on how we
can feel like the best version of ourselves, but they
mostly revolve around the following precepts of
everyday life in Costa Rica:
Growing food
Costa Rica is a land where you can throw a
toothpick on the ground, and it will grow roots.
The warm climate and wet weather are very
forgiving for many local species of fruits, seeds,
and root veggies. Most who live here choose to
take advantage of this fertile land by planting a
few fruit trees, if not more. This equals less
shopping, fewer chemicals in your diet, and more
pleasure from interacting with what you eat.
There’s nothing like the freedom of stepping
outside to pick your meal from your yard.
Daily exercise
It’s natural to feel physically inspired by our
coastal mountain region’s dynamic landscapes in
the Southern Zone of Costa Rica. Electric-blue
Morpho butterflies abound along the lush and
shaded mountain trails we traverse on our
morning walks. Waves caress our wild and
pristine beaches, inviting surf lovers to play. Even
a casual stroll along the soft, golden sands of the
South Pacific can easily have you working up a
sweat.
Everyday exercise allows us to enjoy this
remarkable landscape longer while feeling better.
Skipping the stress
Kicking back in a hammock with a great book is a
favorite way to relax in Costa Rica’s warm, sultry
weather. As soon as we begin to feel the pressure
building, we look outside, take a deep breath, and
appreciate the brightly colored flowers dotted
amidst a sea of green and the buzz of the jungle,
getting lost in wonder away from the cycle of
stress.
Raising children in Costa Rica in a simpler way
Costa Rica is a place for more green time and less
screen time. On top of a good education, children
need well-balanced social interaction and
real-world play for healthy development. Kids in
Costa Rica spend much time playing outdoors
while learning a new culture and language. Here,
in a more natural environment, they can engage
in plenty of non-tech activities within our
ever-evolving communities.

In January 2024, the Family Support Center of
Ojochal (FSCO), Costa Ballena, Costa Rica,
organized its first-ever summer club. The club was
attended by 50 local children and lasted for two
weeks. The kids were each given royal blue t-shirts,
practical backpacks, a large refillable water bottle,
notepads, and pens for their use during the club. The
children were delighted to receive these items and
their excitement was evident in their eyes.
The royal blue t-shirts also helped dedicated
volunteers to observe the younger participants during
the club. The volunteer's collaboration was essential.
Every morning, their enthusiastic driver, Jorge, was as
happy as the children, eagerly awaited as they
prepared for their journey through the stunning
South Pacific of Costa Rica.
As part of the activities, they visit the Playa Tortuga
Reserve and learn about the subtle care and
breeding of butterflies and baby turtles.
Another impressive experience was visiting the
Palenque indigenous house, whose entrance ritual is
placing the palms of the hands together and turning
to the left to enter. Daily the burning fire, framed by
three long, large stones, honors the cherished
ancestors. The participants learned to paint
traditional masks made from balsa wood.
There was rhythmic attunement for a day at the
Ojochal Jungle Academy. There the kids
experimented with different music sounds. The
subsequent walk through the forest and crossing of a
river was a refreshing bonus followed by lots of fun
games.

A fun morning was spent at the Alturas Wildlife
Sanctuary followed by an inspirational art lesson
with Pia Cat at the Whale Tail Brewery Gastro Pub
where they each painted their own whale. It was a
fantastic opportunity for the kids to discover their
creative potential.
Next, the boat engines were roaring on the Sierpe
River, which is considered one of the most beautiful
rivers in Costa Rica. Two boats, designated
especially for the children's club, glided happily
through the flower-covered water. It was a lucky
day; the river water level was high, allowing the
boat to drive into hidden places. Seeing how the
mangrove roots grow on the riverbank was
incredible, how they bring together creating a solid
bond. Expert guides helped them with their laser
pointers to vividly see the many animals that call
the Sierpe River home.
The foamy blue waves were crashing onto Playa
Chaman Beach as the children prepared for
surfboard lessons with a volleyball warm-up
training. The friendly instructors were eager to see
the kids riding the waves. Many of them managed
to stand up on their boards. Afterward, the kids
played a game at the mini golf at Osa Mini Golf.
The parents were very proud of the opportunity for
their kids to participate, thanks to the FSCO.
This event was made possible thanks to the
appreciated donations to the organization. Please
consider being part of this great initiative.

Health can be understood as a state of
complete physical, mental, and social
wellness, not just as the lack of disease or
physical afflictions. Integral well-being is
that state that promotes the development
of the human being in all its dimensions:
physical, emotional, cognitive, and
spiritual. In other words, it is a state that
involves not only pleasurable experiences
at a particular time. It is related to the
reduction of emotional stress and at-risk
behaviors. It also includes a positive effect
of protection for family relations, couples,
peers, and even interactions at school or
work that, in turn, reflect in increased
accomplishments.
Attaining well-being and health comes
easy to some, but it involves a conscious
effort to plan and perform daily activities
to obtain the desired results for others.
Living in an area like Bahía Ballena, with
easy access to beaches, healthy foods,
opportunities for exercise, outdoor
activities, and a sense of community,
promotes wellbeing and, in turn, can help
you keep your health in all its aspects.
Taking a walk on the beach or a hike
through the mountains, having coffee
with friends, or participating in many of
the different activities in the community
will help strengthen your bond with others
and help you feel relaxed, at ease, and
happy.
Another excellent option to promote your
health is the availability of many services
to actively work on any issues that have
affected your health in the past or that
you know you must work on to ensure you
will still be healthy in the future. This
involves prevention, like screening for
health issues, having checkups,
bloodwork, pap smears, colonoscopy,
and many other tests that can allow you
to avoid future concerns.
