We opened Parnassus Books in November of 2011 with a fanfare of music, story time and puppets. Local authors came, the newspaper came, all the television stations were there. The store was half its size back then, and it felt like all of Nashville had crammed in to celebrate. When the daytime events turned into nighttime events, we poured champagne and toasted the future. We were once again a city with an independent bookstore! We couldn’t believe how lucky we were.

That first day was an enormous joy, and so were all the days that followed. Parnassus prevailed against the giant online retailer (that shall remain nameless) by providing great customer service. Our smart staff remembered what books you liked and recommended something new. We hosted magnificent author events. We offered comfy chairs, a chess board, a train table. Some people came to read, while others came to scratch the shop dogs, rest, be together or be alone. It didn’t matter. Parnassus was there for the community and everyone was welcome.

What did the pandemic change about that? Everything. And nothing at all. In spite of the distance, we’ve been here for one another. When you couldn’t come in the store, you ordered your books from Parnassus online and we shipped them to your house or brought them to your car. In some cases we drove them to you. Even without the readings and the story time and the place to hang out, you continued to shop local. And people who weren’t local stepped up to order books, too. We made new friends all over the country.

You kept us afloat with your loyalty and your love.

For better and for worse, in sickness and in health.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude.

A Letter from Ann Patchett

— Ann Patchett, Karen Hayes, and all the staff and shop dogs at Parnassus Books

Our gratitude is for you, our customers, but it’s also for our staff who showed up in masks to work even when things felt scary. The entire store was turned into a super-safe fulfillment center. We wrapped books until the wee hours of the morning and stuck labels on boxes. Themusic got louder. We wore sweat pants. The dogs took over the couch. We believed that books were essential. If you were stuck at home, we wanted to make sure you had something great to read.

But still, we’ve missed you like crazy.

2020 has been a long, hard year for everyone, and while there’s much to mourn, there are things worth celebrating as well. This holiday we will celebrate with smart gifts, like Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste and Louise Erdrich’s The Night Watchman, and joyful gifts like Sandra
Boynton’s “Every Day Is a Fabulous Holiday” calendar. We have picture books about unicorns and explosive political exposes. We have socks and tote bags and puzzles. (Did you have any idea how comforting a puzzle would be?) We have three great subscription series:

The First Editions Club for adults

Parnassus Next for young adult readers

And the brand new Spark Book Club for middle grade readers.

That means pretty much everyone on your list can get a signed, first edition book, carefully chosen and beautifully presented, every month of the year.
Of course we have gift cards, a perennial holiday favorite. We also have gift boxes: with just a little bit of information about the recipient we can make all the decisions for you. Doesn’t that sound dreamy?

All we ask is that you get your orders in ridiculously early.

How early?

Now would be good.

The supply chain isn’t what it used to be, and the last thing we want is for anyone to be disappointed.

So scroll through our first holiday catalog and see what looks good to you, then let us know how we can help.

We’re here for you, just like you’re here for us. Now that’s a reason to celebrate.

Dirt

Bill Buford

I actually listened to this book on audio. Love it when the author reads their own work and Buford is a very good reader. Who doesn't want to be transported to France and immersed in a foreign culture at this moment in time? Buford is an obsessive about the details, frustrations and joys of learning a new cuisine. Great gift for Dads. Karen

Hamnet

Maggie O'Farrell

Little is known about the life and family of William Shakespeare, but with what little is known, O’Farrell has woven an unforgettable story. The turning point of this novel is the death of Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet (a name that at that time was interchangeable with Hamlet) at age 11. The main focus is the remarkable Agnes (or Anne), William’s wife. She is the centerpiece of this exquisite tale. Karen
