5 Director s Statement Dear friends 2020 was a year of challenges perseverance and victories We are grateful that it is behind us and we are ready for 2021 Last year we had many challenges to conquer In March COVID 19 hit and Guatemala was shut down Like many other schools we were not able to meet with our students in our classrooms This was hard Our students come to school to get more than an education They come to disconnect from problems at home physical abuse parents fighting no food to eat the need to take care of the younger siblings etc They come to be normal teenagers to play games to follow rules as well as to learn When everything shut down we had to find a way to connect with them The leaders of the villages were instructed by the government not to let anyone meet so we had to create a plan We communicated through WhatsApp with our secondary students while our assistant Delma walked to each preschooler to deliver homework It was challenging since our students do not have internet computers or sometimes electric at home yet we were still able to leverage mobile technology to work with our students in 2020 In Joconal the year ended with four preschoolers ready for 1st grade and six high school graduates Our 6 alumni are ready for their next adventure starting their own business working in an office continuing their education and helping to support their families In Chichimecas we finished 2020 with 16 students ready to continue their education in 8th and 9th grade Our staff finished with our arms in the air praising God because He let us continue our work with the students despite all the challenges We finished with five tired teachers because they had to learn to work online in a challenging environment Still last year finished with many victories In the New Year our staff and Board of Directors continue to work hard to further the vision of Lan Vwa and change the lives of our students We are thankful for you because with your support we were able to continue empowering the families of Joconal and Chichimecas God bless all of you Here we come 2021 2020 a year of challenges perseverance and victories 2020 was a challenge I had to find solutions and create new learning environments I was excited to see students succeed with the support of their parents Desyi Martinez Preschool teacher 2020 taught us that technology does not reinvent education it only expands its possibilities Karen Martinez Secondary teacher in Joconal
