MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR Written by resident and Publisher Blaine Elizabeth Alexander It s not the size of the dog in the fight it s the size of the fight in the dog Mark Twain There is just something about an underdog story that resonates with us and makes us feel compelled to cheer them on First and foremost to be an underdog you have to have some kind of external force holding you back or where the odds are against you Additionally you need to be willing to work hard for what you want Underdogs don t have things handed to them they sacrifice for their or others success A true underdog overcomes obstacles and defies the odds shocking doubters We have an underdog in our neighborhood Allen Smith President CEO of OneSpartanburg Inc formerly known as the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce First born to his 17 year old mother in Greenville NC Allen learned grit and determination first hand His mother overcame open heart surgery at 16 years old and became a single parent of three boys by 25 years old and provided the best she could from the salary of a receptionist at a law firm The odds were against Allen but with the support of his parents stepparents and grandparents he became the first in his family to obtain a college degree East Carolina University Allen thrives in the underdog roll and humbly says I really relate to Spartanburg When almost all of our 12 Eastside Living March 2021 Did you know that 42 000 cars a day pass the OneSpartanburg Inc building on the corner of N Pine Street and E St John Street Allen Allen and Wes Lehrer Wes is the Chamber s Board Chairman He and his family live in Andrews Farm to our success Allen says We have every expectation to deliver outcomes both from the public and private sectors but we have zero formal authority to do so Every single thing we do has to be done through public and private investments and in partnership with other organizations steady economic evolution Allen says Thanks to the resources provided by the OneSpartanburg Vision Plan top Pall executives will call Spartanburg home Recruiting the company is the main priority Keeping executive type wages local causes the economic impact to be exponential In April of 2020 OneSpartanburg Inc launched the Bringing Back the Burg effort an initiative designed to assist local businesses recover from COVID 19 setbacks Co Chaired by County Council David Britt and Dr Kay Woodward and guided by a 33 member task force the effort s results have received national acclaim It is one of the many reasons why the Carolinas Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives named OneSpartanburg Inc the 2020 Carolinas Outstanding Chamber of the Year Spartanburg needs more ambassadors more believers people talking in their circles about the good happening in this community If you ve lived here for a long time it s hard to believe our growth for instance right now within 5 miles of Morgan Square there are 2257 multi housing units under construction or in the pipeline That means the number of existing units will quadruple over the next 24 48 months putonyourseatbelts Allen is fighting for Spartanburg He says This year we took a historic step and hired a full time lobbying firm The Tallon Group to specifically advocate for Spartanburg s business community Their work has already proven to be beneficial both for our local businesses and citizens Eastsiders we have a massive impact on our community and can use our influence to help Allen fight for Spartanburg If we ve learned anything from last year s social distancing it s how much we need each other This is a great place to live so let s talk up all the great things going on here and get more involved First step become invested in One Spartanburg Inc Did you know Spartanburg has the only consolidated economic tourism and business development organization in NC SC For instance Greenville has the Greenville Area Development Corporation the Greenville Chamber and Visit Greenville SC all in three different buildings and administrative overhead with three different organizations budgets and missions not a lot of collaboration Did you know that the City Manager the County Manager and the Chamber CEO are all under 50 years old Allen says That s unheard of in other communities We are a living example of young people leading and engaging That s one of the components to the See Yourself in Spartanburg campaign seeyourselfinspartanburg com a talent recruitment initiative Along with improving education attainment Allen says Talent recruitment and retention are key to the MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR Written by resident and Publisher Blaine Elizabeth Alexander It s not the size of the dog in the fight it s the size of the fight in the dog Mark Twain There is just something about an underdog story that resonates with us and makes us feel compelled to cheer them on First and foremost to be an underdog you have to have some kind of external force holding you back or where the odds are against you Additionally you need to be willing to work hard for what you want Underdogs don t have things handed to them they sacrifice for their or others success A true underdog overcomes obstacles and defies the odds shocking doubters We have an underdog in our neighborhood Allen Smith President CEO of OneSpartanburg Inc formerly known as the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce First born to his 17 year old mother in Greenville NC Allen learned grit and determination first hand His mother overcame open heart surgery at 16 years old and became a single parent of three boys by 25 years old and provided the best she could from the salary of a receptionist at a law firm The odds were against Allen but with the support of his parents stepparents and grandparents he became the first in his family to obtain a college degree East Carolina University Allen thrives in the underdog roll and humbly says I really relate to Spartanburg When almost all of our 12 Eastside Living March 2021 Did you know that 42 000 cars a day pass the OneSpartanburg Inc building on the corner of N Pine Street and E St John Street Allen Allen and Wes Lehrer Wes is the Chamber s Board Chairman He and his family live in Andrews Farm to our success Allen says We have every expectation to deliver outcomes both from the public and private sectors but we have zero formal authority to do so Every single thing we do has to be done through public and private investments and in partnership with other organizations steady economic evolution Allen says Thanks to the resources provided by the OneSpartanburg Vision Plan top Pall executives will call Spartanburg home Recruiting the company is the main priority Keeping executive type wages local causes the economic impact to be exponential In April of 2020 OneSpartanburg Inc launched the Bringing Back the Burg effort an initiative designed to assist local businesses recover from COVID 19 setbacks Co Chaired by County Council David Britt and Dr Kay Woodward and guided by a 33 member task force the effort s results have received national acclaim It is one of the many reasons why the Carolinas Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives named OneSpartanburg Inc the 2020 Carolinas Outstanding Chamber of the Year Spartanburg needs more ambassadors more believers people talking in their circles about the good happening in this community If you ve lived here for a long time it s hard to believe our growth for instance right now within 5 miles of Morgan Square there are 2257 multi housing units under construction or in the pipeline That means the number of existing units will quadruple over the next 24 48 months putonyourseatbelts Allen is fighting for Spartanburg He says This year we took a historic step and hired a full time lobbying firm The Tallon Group to specifically advocate for Spartanburg s business community Their work has already proven to be beneficial both for our local businesses and citizens Eastsiders we have a massive impact on our community and can use our influence to help Allen fight for Spartanburg If we ve learned anything from last year s social distancing it s how much we need each other This is a great place to live so let s talk up all the great things going on here and get more involved First step become invested in One Spartanburg Inc Did you know Spartanburg has the only consolidated economic tourism and business development organization in NC SC For instance Greenville has the Greenville Area Development Corporation the Greenville Chamber and Visit Greenville SC all in three different buildings and administrative overhead with three different organizations budgets and missions not a lot of collaboration Did you know that the City Manager the County Manager and the Chamber CEO are all under 50 years old Allen says That s unheard of in other communities We are a living example of young people leading and engaging That s one of the components to the See Yourself in Spartanburg campaign seeyourselfinspartanburg com a talent recruitment initiative Along with improving education attainment Allen says Talent recruitment and retention are key to the diversification of our economy and the recruitment of higher wage jobs The Smiths live in Converse Heights and feel like it is a real life depiction of a Norman Rockwell painting Allen and Jenni have
