Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects the ovaries, particularly in people of reproductive age. How does one identify PCOS? K Insulin resistance, bloating, inability to lose weight K Male pattern hair growth, acne K Infertility, extreme difculty or impossibility to achieve pregnancy K Irregular or absent menstrual cyclesYou may wonder, what is the cause of PCOS? At approximately mid-cycle, the pituitary gland, located in the brain, sends a signal for a number of follicles to travel down the fallopian tube in preparation for ovulation. At that time, the pituitary gland also releases the hormones needed for ovulation, which are estrogen, androgens (male hormones, especially testosterone) and insulin. Ovulation occurs when one of the eggs ‘pop’. Once the egg has ‘popped’, the membranes surrounding the egg called the corpus luteum start producing progesterone

WHAT IS PCOS? WHAT CAUSES PCOS?HOW CAN PCOS BE HELPED? in anticipation of a possible pregnancy. The progesterone then sends a signal to the pituitary gland that ovulation has occurred and thus no more follicles or hormones need to be released. This is the case in a normal cycle, when ovulation actually occurs. In some people, ovulation does not occur.* In other words, the follicles and accompanying hormones are released, but the egg does not ‘pop’.Therefore, there is no progesterone production, and the pituitary gland does not receive information that ovulation has occurred (because it didn’t). In this case, the pituitary gland will release more follicles, more estrogens, more androgens/testosterone, and more insulin in the hopes of achieving ovulation. Excesses of these hormones put the body in a state of imbalance.

Adding natural progesterone at mid cycle, whether ovulation has occurred or not, will send a message to the pituitary gland to stop sending extra follicles and the hormones that are released with them. In many instances PCOS may be controlled or reversed within three to six months. Why add natural progesterone? K The overload of androgens may cause male pattern hair growth, acne and irregular menstrual cycles. K The overload of insulin may cause insulin resistance and/or weight gain or bloating. K The overload of estrogens makes the follicles turn into cysts and get clumped onto the fallopian tubes, hence the name polycystic ovarian syndrome.* Possible direct causes of anovulatory cycles may include lifestyle factors, such as stress, lack of physical activity, poor diet, birth control use, and poor egg quality.

Which environmental factors play a role in estrogen dominance? K Plastics are estrogen based. Putting hot food in plastic or heating food in a microwave, will put estrogen residue into your body. K Agricultural chemicals may contain compounds that act as estrogen mimics. Residue from these chemicals can nd its way into the food and water supply, potentially contributing to estrogen dominance. K Livestock may be treated with hormones to promote growth and increase meat and dairy production. Consuming these products may expose individuals to additional sources of estrogen. K Air and water pollution, such as automobile exhaust can contain estrogenic compounds. This is a reality we are all exposed to. Natural Progeleven, can help counteract estrogen dominance by balancing hormonal levels and promoting a more harmonious ratio between estrogen and progesterone, which is essential for overall hormonal equilibrium.
