1 ABOUT OUR SUPERINTENDENT….. Dr. M. Ann Levett, a native of Savannah and proud product of the local schools, is Superintendent of Savannah-Chatham Public Schools (SCCPSS). She is a life- long professional educator, beginning her career at SCCPSS as a speech and language pathologist. After serving here for years and rising to the rank of principal at Savannah High School, Dr. Levett left the area to pursue other professional opportunities. She rose to the rank of acting superintendent in Dayton, Ohio before moving on to higher education leadership positions at Antioch University, Middle Georgia State University, and Yale University School of Medicine. Throughout her tenure she has coordinated school university partnerships across the United States and its territories, and led school reform efforts in several European cities, including Dublin (Ireland), London (UK), Utrecht (Netherlands), and Rennes (France). Dr. Levett has also consulted on significant community development projects in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and several major U.S. cities. In October 2007, she was appointed to the Board of Education for New Haven Public Schools in New Haven, CT. She also served as a board member. for two charter schools in New Haven. Since returning to Georgia, Dr. Levett has served in several key positions at the state level and maintained her positions in several national and international organizations. She is a published author, nationally known speaker, and consultant on international educational projects. Most recently, Dr. Levett was named 2021 National Superintendent to Watch, 2021 Carl Perkins Community Service awardee, 2020 University of Georgia College of Education Lifetime Achievement awardee, 2019 Georgia Outstanding Woman, 2019 Georgia Department of Education’s STEM and STEAM Advocate of the Year and received numerous awards from other organizations.

2 To the Best Leaders an Associate Superintendent could ever ask for, welcome to the 2022 Elementary/K-8 Leadership Retreat! It is my hope that this time together will ignite a passion and a renewed vision for your leadership future. These past few years have been quite challenging for school leaders. However, you took lemons and made tasty and refreshing lemonade. You cared for your students and staff enough to lead them through this pandemic. As we move into 2022-2023, let us fix our focus on instruction. As leaders, it will be imperative for you to be the instructional leader of your school. This retreat will be focused on three things: Building your leadership capacity, strategies for improving relationships with staff, families and other stakeholders, and ways to increase student achievement in schools. Enjoy the speakers, presenters and activities that have been designed with you in mind. We appreciate you and we look forward to seeing you grow as a leader. Welcome Letter from the Desk of Mrs. Kaye Aikens Associate Superintendent Elementary/K-8 Schools About the Associate Superintendent of Elementary and K-8 Schools Mrs. Mary Kaye Aikens is the Associate Superintendent of Elementary and K-8 Schools. She has been an educator for 29 years and has served in numerous capacities during her educational journey. She has her Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision. Mrs. Aikens has served as an Elementary Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, and the Senior Director of Professional Learning. Mrs. Aikens is currently supervising principals at 23 Elementary and K-8 Schools. Her passion for students learning at a high level is her driving force to ensure all students receive a quality education. She has played a vital role in the careers of hundreds of new teachers as she coordinated the endorsement for teachers to earn their clear renewable certification. Many employees in the school district have been supported by her as she provides best practices and strategies to enhance their performance in their positions. She also teaches college courses to aspiring teachers and administrators at Columbia College for over 16 years. Mrs. Aikens is indeed a life-long learner and encourages educators to continue their educational journey to make a positive impact on the lives of students.

TROY A BROWN SENIOR OFFICER OF ELEMENTARY/K-8 SCHOOL LEADERSHIP Dear Colleagues: It is an honor and pleasure to officially welcome you to the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System 2022 Leadership Retreat. Hosted by the Elementary/K-8 Schools Academic Affairs department, this premier event for school leaders, will provide you with phenomenal speakers and presenters who will educate, challenge, and surely inspire you. As we applaud all our SCCPSS school leaders, we are especially grateful to work with the best principals in the nation. Go ABT Team! As the leaders of your schools, you are setting the pace for the way our children learn and what they will achieve later in life. This leadership retreat will truly embody the Leading Forward: Principals Building Relationships and Leadership Capacity in Schools theme with breakout sessions, keynote speakers, facilitators, and professional learning activities. We hope the strategies and practices exchanged, shared, and embraced during this retreat will serve you in the best way possible. I am sure you will find that the issues you face in your schools are the same issues that your peers are facing. 4 Keynote Speaker Dr. Juli Alligood June 13, 2022 . A thirty-year veteran of education, Dr. Juli Alligood began her teaching career as a high school English teacher. After 14 years in the classroom, she entered the field of administration as an assistant principal; she then became a principal, a district leader serving as Federal Programs Director, TKES Director, and Assessment Director. She was named Superintendent of Schools in Laurens County, where she led the district to impressive student achievement gains. Currently, she serves as Executive Director at Middle Georgia Regional Education Service Agency. Dr. Alligood has a passion for students, teachers, teaching, and learning, and she works with a fierce sense of urgency.

6 Dr. Rebecca Gillette Now serving in the role of GaDOE School Effectiveness Specialist, Dr. Gillette brings an array of experiences collected over 36+ years in education. She has served as classroom teacher, instructional coach, building administrator, director of curriculum & instruction and assistant superintendent for instruction and student services. She recognizes the importance of rigorous instruction, quality formative data, collaboration, and accountability. Lastly, she enjoys helping school leaders build a strong continuous improvement framework to move from “good to great”! Mrs. Rhonda Lee Currently serving as a GaDOE School Effectiveness Specialist, Mrs. Lee brings with her 30+ years of educational experience. She is a certified School Improvement Specialist conferred through The Institute for Performance Improvement. During her tenure she served in many capacities including classroom teacher, academic coach, assistant principal, and principal. Recognizing the importance of meeting the child where he/she is at, she has been trained as a Learning Focused Schools Differentiation Instructor and as a trainer in Learning Focused Schools Rigorous Instruction and Transforming Standards into Learning. Mrs. Lee loves working with school teams on analyzing data through multiple perspectives to unearth strengths and challenges. 7 Mrs. Janne Childs Janne Childs serves as a consultant in the areas of Leadership, School Improvement, and Language Arts for Middle Georgia RESA. With over 40 years in the field of education, Mrs. Childs has been an elementary school teacher, instructional coach, API, and school principal. She has provided professional learning for educators throughout the state and has hosted numerous site visits, including GLISI bus tours. She has served as a presenter for Georgia College and State University’s Administrators’ Cohort and Georgia State University’s Principals’ Center. In 2008, Mrs. Childs was recognized by Georgia State University as the winner of the Outstanding Principals’ Award for Exemplary School Leadership. Her school leadership interests include school culture, professional learning communities, and improving teacher performance. She has been married to her husband, Joe for 40 years. They have a son, daughter-in-law, and two remarkable grand girls! Mrs. Andrea Burkiett Andrea Burkiett has worked in the Georgia educational system for 24 years as a teacher, academic coach, assistant principal, principal, and curriculum director. During her tenure as principal, her leadership and instructional experience contributed to one school earning National Blue- Ribbon status and one school earning Leader in Me Lighthouse status. Mrs. Burkiett is passionate about helping school leaders and teachers grow and improve instructional practices. She enjoys spending time with her husband, son, and family, crafting, and spending time at the beach. Together let us renew passion, grow capacity, effectively address school improvement and academic goals, create a culture of excellence, and build positive relationships.

8 Keynote Speaker Mr. Anthony Jones June 14, 2022 Anthony E. Jones, M.Ed. is the President of RBD Consulting Firm, a human capital practice that specializes in innovative thinking and proven tools to help organizations understand and seize opportunities to develop high-performing talent. He has appeared on Good Morning America and Fox News and has been quoted in publications such as the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, HR Executive Magazine, India Management Magazine, and Ebony Magazine. Anthony has spoken to such groups as the American Council on Education and the Society for Human Resource Management. To help individuals maximize their life experience, Anthony has also published the book and workbook, Success by Design: Becoming the Person You Were Destined to Be. Anthony has served as Director of Global Diversity at the Convergys Corporation and was responsible for performance strategy worldwide. Prior to Convergys, Anthony led recruitment for INROADS, Inc. as the National Director of Recruitment Services. His clients included Proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, IBM, and a host of other Fortune 500 companies. Anthony also served as Vice-Principal of Enrollment Management at Fisk University and DePauw University; and currently serves as Associate Provost of Enrollment and Management at Howard University, where he oversees the overall enrollment process, with a budget of over $300 million and a staff of 60 plus employees. Several of Anthony’s student retention exercises were highlighted nationally in US News & World Report. Anthony has been active in the community serving as a member of the board for Mercy Health Partners Hospital Systems, Leadership Ohio, and Cincinnati Music Hall’s May Festival to name a few. He is a Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Fisk University and holds a Master’s Degree from Vanderbilt University, Diversity Management Certification from the University of Houston, and Christian Ministry certification from Life Christian Bible Institute. He is married to Tonya L. Jones, D.D.S. The couple has two beautiful children.

10 Mrs. Shaundra Straughter Shaundra Straughter is a GRE4T Personalized Learning (PL) Specialist with the Georgia Department of Education. She served as an educator and Personalized Learning Specialist in the Muscogee County School District before joining GaDOE. Prior to becoming an educator, Shaundra was a Marketing and Promotions Coordinator in her hometown of Valdosta. She currently resides in Columbus, GA with her husband Jamon, and two children Ava (6) and Christian (4). Shaundra is a firm believer in the power of personalized learning. "Personalized learning uses co-planning to foster positive relationships between learners and teachers by giving learners the freedom to explore and choose their path while taking ownership of their learning in an exclusive classroom community." Session Presenters June 14, 2022 Mrs. Kim Bennett Kim Garcia Bennett has been the Director of Coastal GLRS for three years. She obtained her degrees from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, and Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia. She holds a Bachelor's degree in special education and a Master's degree in special education, emphasizing behavior and autism. Mrs. Bennett has 11 years of experience working in the public/private sector providing job training and employment opportunities for adults as well as opportunities to support businesses with productivity and growth. She has over 14 years of experience working in the field of special education as a director, program specialist, teacher, and coach for specially designed instruction and implementation strategies. She served in her former district as a RTI Coordinator, PBIS Coordinator, 21st Century Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, Summer School Administrator, and Academic Specialist. She has presented at several state and local conferences on best practices for co-teaching and implementation strategies. Dr. Troy A Brown A thirty (plus) year veteran of public education, Dr. Troy A Brown currently serves as the Senior Officer of School Leadership for Elementary/K8 Schools. He has served as a classroom teacher at multiple grade levels, assistant principal, and principal. In addition, he teaches courses for the Teach Savannah Learning Academy—GATAPP program and courses at the post-secondary/university level. Successful school leadership is about magnetic communication and effective relationships. Leaders should have a way of communicating and building positive relationships that draw people toward the vision and the horizon. Dr. Brown has facilitated various professional learning activities regarding relationships. One of his favorite quotes is “The best way to lead people into the future is to connect with them deeply in the present.” ~
