Classroom Guide to Motivation and Behaviors

In the classroom there are behaviors that are not so much wanted by teachers. This guide is to help teachers with students that like to act out, are time wasters, or even just to help motivate some students. I will be going through some common misbehaviors in the classroom and how to help you solve, motivate or encourage students. hopefully you find what you need.

intrinsic motivation:

According to a docmuent titled intrinsic motivation, learning goals, engagement, and achievement in a diverse high school, "Intrinsic motivation has also been labeled by some researchers as emotional engagement, and researchers have found that emotional engagement predicts the development of behavioral engagement" With this I see that with intrinsic motivation you can predict a students behavioral engagement within the classroom. Intrinstic motivation is seen as were a student not necessarily enjoys the learning but sees it as a important thing and wants to continue it. A student may also enjoy learning, and want to continue it as well. I see the goals of this guide then to encourage children to want to be intrinsicallly motivated to work harder in school and have a positive behavior to learning seeing it as someting important.





Challenging Behaviors:


Time Waster:

When a student is a time waster they are wasting their time on messing around in the classroom instead of doing their work. This type of behavior is not one that you want your students to get use to. A way to help with this is having something else for the students to do. A problem with this is that student may think that these types of things are boring, but you have to find a way to motivate them.




One way to motivate students is by using external events to increase intrinsic motivation. Students love getting prises such as candy, toys, stickers, and so much more. By using these such things you can motivate students to want to personally use their time wisely. Use them for things such as.

  • getting all work done for the day
  • reading of books
  • scores on AR tests
  • test scores, to encourage studying

I believe that this will make students want to spend their time more wisely to recieve a reward.






As students get older they need to be taught good study habbits, but they don't always use them. If you can find ways to help motivate students to want to study then why not use them. 



Study Habbits:

In time wasting I said that one way is to use incentives to help students want to study to do well on their tests. This is just one way that I can see that will help students want to study. Here are some other ways to help motivate students.

  • creating studying into a game
  • having a sheet of multiple ways to study, that must be finish before test time
  • doing a test before and after studying to show students that studying does help

To me by using some of these different ways of motivating students then they will see that studying is a good thing really and it isn't just something that teachers tell you to do.





Disruptive Behavior-

Whether it is sitting still on a rug in criss cross apple sause, not raising hands to speak, or just trying to be a class clown, there are always times when students decide to act out. Sometimes students are just wanting attention and others they might just be not wanting to learn and getting bored. Either way this can encourage others to want to act out as well, which is not something you want. 


Desired Behavoirs:

When you watch the way students act in the classroom and even walking down the hallway there are things that you can do to point out those good behaving students and show the others that you really thing they should be acting the same way.

  • acknowledging the students that are acting the desired way and point out "I like how you are sitting nice and still and ready to listen." this will make others want to follow
  • reward the ones that are acting correctly such as letting the one doing the right thing line up first
  • calling on the person with their hand up and point out thank you for waiting
  • Behavioral puff balls. Red, green, and yellow puff balls that are changed out for being a good student, a warning for yellow, and red when they are introuble.

When students see these different things in the classroom it will motivate students to want to act in the ways that are desired from the teacher.
