Message Town of EdgewoodNewsletterEast Venus Road - In August 2024, Roadcrews began the process to pave a 1.25-mile section. The project has experiencedweather and supply delays. Despite thosehurdles, crews have completed extensivedirt work and began installing 38 culvertsto improve safety and drainage. Currently,base course and compaction are in theworks. If the warm weather holds up,chipseal paving and sealing will follow. Iftemperatures drop, chipseal will bepostponed until late spring.Another successful "Woofstock" thanks to communityvolunteers and big-hearted families. Shelter petsfrom around the state came and 39 found newhomes! Experts shared training tips, residents tookadvantage of the pet vaccine clinic, and puppy'Picasos' painted masterpieces to take home. Livemusic, local food trucks, and vendors kept the crowdenergized, and it was a beautiful day! Commission ChangesStephen Murillo, a lifelong Edgewood resident, wassworn-in on August 12th by Judge White after theTown Commission appointed Murillo to fill avacant commission seat. The commissioninterviewed three highly qualified candidatesbefore making the appointment in accordancewith NMSA 3-14-9 Commissioner Jerry Powers stepped down in Julyto address health-related issues. He was electedin Nov. 2021 and re-elected in Nov 2023. FY25 Q1 P3 Town of Edgewood NewsletterQ1 Financial SummaryThe Town Clerk-Treasurer provided a summary of the town’s financial position at the October 8thCommission meeting. To date, the town revenues are at 18% of budget, and expenditures are at 27%of budgeted. It is noted that there are a number of annual expenses that are paid during the firstquarter each year, and there is roughly $1M in grant reimbursements pending.Staff DevelopmentDuring FY25 Q1: 7 positions were filled (5replacement/2 new). Edgewood’s Governing Bodyhas made it a focus to get staffing levels up in orderto address local expectations. The Commission approved serval new positionswhen it adopted a new organization chart in July2024. The on-going process of adding to staff willbe gradual. Senior management is reviewingstaffing needs and working to identify and prioritizenew positions and funding. Edgewood strives to be the best place to work in theEast Mountain region. The Town offers excellentbenefits and career paths to retain employees. Weare recruiting high quality candidates and investingin employee training.

FY25 Q1 P4 Town of Edgewood NewsletterRoadway MowingWelcome to EdgewoodFourteen new signs now welcome Edgewoodresidents home and visitors to ourcommunity at fourteen different entry pointsto Edgewood. Sign locations include townboundary points at NM 333, NM 344, Frost Rd,Dinkle Rd., Church St. and NM 14.Town of Edgewood Maintenance Crews were recentlymowing and weeding along NM 344, at the I-40ramps, and along town paved roads. They alsoaddressed NM 333 (Rt 66). State highways NM 344and NM 333 are NMDOT's responsibility, but the Statehad not attended to them. So, the town stepped upto improve our community's appearance on thoseroadways. Kudos to the Town’s hard-working crew fortaking on the extra work. A subsequent meeting withNMDOT’s new supervisor saw a quick response tooverdue maintenance along the Frontage Rd. NMDOTis work on improving response in the area. Planning for the FutureA Comprehensive Plan is a long-range visionfor the town. It is updated every five years, witha 20-year future view of the town. Goals andobjectives are established and strategies toachieve the plan are drafted. Community inputis an important part of the process. The Planning & Zoning department has beenworking with consulting firm ConsensusPlanning through the process of updating theComprehensive Plan by gathering communityinput and coordinating the steering committee.Through the process, the community’s interests,concerns, and vision for Edgewood movingforward have been identified. In December andJanuary a survey was conducted. A PublicMeeting was held in January to discuss surveyoutcomes, and another in July to review andgive feedback on draft goals and objectives. The next Public Meeting is Wed, Nov. 6 at 6pm..

FY25 Q1 P7 Town of Edgewood NewsletterLibrary UpgradesRideshare Begins Oct. 15The Governing Body selected the following projects to request NM Legislative Funding. The Town alsoseeks funding through grants and other appropriations.Venus Park ExpansionCommissioners Donner and Milligan have keptfocus on expansion of Venus Park. A new multi-sport field will be added over the coming year.The decision was made to use turf rather thansod for water conservation. Engineering isunderway on restroom facilities and the parkinglot will be expanded to the west. If fundingremains, a dog park may be included. In July, the Library held an Open House to sharethe new furnishings and equipment madepossible by a $100,00 Legislative Appropriationfrom Rep McQueen. The Library purchasedhigh-quality tables and chairs for the entireLibrary. The Computer Lab got study carrels andtwo work pods (enclosed units for quiet spaceor online meetings), and a collaborative areawith conference table and chairs. Comfortablereading areas were created with upholsteredchairs and rugs. Activity boards were added tothe children’s activities area, and technologyupgrades completed the upgrades project.Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP)Commissioner Brennan has been working withNCRTD to bring a rideshare service to Edgewood.Starting on Oct. 15th, Edgewood residents can usethe app or call to get door-to-door service withinEdgewood’s service area. FY25 Q1 P8 Town of Edgewood NewsletterWater TopicsCommissioners have authorized staff to undertakeadvance long-range water security for Edgewood.Staff has begun conversations with Santa Fe Countyto coordinate efforts and expand funding options.The Town is working to establish water wholesalerstatus and obtain funding to acquire water rightsand develop conveyance infrastructure. TwoPreliminary Engineering Reports (PERs) are nearlycompleted for feasibility of a Water ConditioningFacility and expansion of the Town’s WastewaterTreatment facility. The Town is also working onwater conservation, sustainability, and re-useoptions for Edgewood.Getting Ready for WinterNuisance AbatementsIn August 2023, the Town of Edgewood adopteda Nuisance Abatement ordinance in August of2023, to facilitate clean-up ofdilapidated/abandoned buildings andnuisance properties that negatively impactsafety and quality of life for Edgewoodresidents. The Town earmarked Cannabisexcise taxes to fund the abatement program.Since adoption, the Town’s Planning & Zoningand Code Enforcement staff have workeddiligently with community members to findworkable solutions to these zoning matters. To date, 48 properties have identified; 40clean-ups are completed and eight arecurrently in progress. The program has beenwell-received by most property owners, withmany expressing gratitude for the help to gettheir properties cleaned-up. Most ownersreimburse the town for the actual cost ofclean-up; others choose to have a lien placedon the property for clean-up costs. Staff often hear thanks from neighboringproperty owners who are grateful for theimproved safety and positive visual impact totheir neighborhood. In fact, the program is sosuccessful that other municipalities areshowing great interest for their communities. Autumn is the time to prepare for winter weather inEdgewood. Home projects such weather strippingand insulation around doors, windows, and pipes cankeep heating costs down and avoid broken pipes. Ifyou have a woodstove, consider flue cleaning toavoid chimney fires, and stock up on wood or pellets.Make sure your fire and CO2 detectors are workingand batteries are fresh. Outdoor pets, need a shelterthat will keep them dry and protected from wind andcold. Keep medications supplied. Plan for poweroutages. This willimprove coverage and the ability to coordinatewith other agencies in urgent situations.On September 30, 2024, Edgewood PD assistedNM State Police after a driver and passengerwere observed racing on I-40 in excess of 120miles per hour. Edgewood PD was able tosuccessfully stop stick the passenger side tires.After the second set of stop sticks weredeployed, the vehicle rear ended a semi-truckand became disabled. The driver andpassenger fled on foot but were shortly takeninto custody without further incident. No injurieswere reported in this incident.We are fortunate to have well-trained EPDofficers who care about the community. Edgewood PoliceAnimal ShelterMunicipal CourtEdgewood’s Municipal Court handles theadjudication of petty misdemeanors, shop liftingcases under $250, and Animal Control matters.Edgewood Police cite to both EdgewoodMunicipal Court and Magistrate Court,depending on the mater needing to be heard. The Edgewood Courthouse is also the site forAdministrative Hearings for Edgewood zoningmatters.Edgewood’s Animal Shelter supports AnimalControl by having a safe place for dogs and catswho may be lost or injured. The Shelter is nowopen 7 days per week from 9:00am-5:00pm. The Shelter has separate areas for canine andfeline guests, and works to re-connect familieswith their pets. The Shelter has periodic chippingand vaccination opportunities. Recently, theseservices were offered at Woofstock.In the event someone can no longer care for theiranimal, the Shelter offers a surrender option sothat pets are not abandoned. Lots of activitiesfor kids, minor bike repairs were available, and 45 bikehelmets and two bikes were given away.

Donated byEdgewood residents Donald and Mary Huston,the 1930 bridge originally crossed TaylorCanyon in Socorro County, NM, It will soonprovide for non-motorized crossing ofBachelor Draw, connecting trails in Section 16and a route between Venus Park andEdgewood Middle School. Federal grantsfunded the majority of cost with roughly $100kfrom the Town.
