Publisher s Letter By Rex F all has arrived As the autumn leaves change colors and begin to drift slowly to the ground the gentle thoughts of pumpkin spice and nutme Scrrrraaaaccchhh loud sound of record scratch AAAAWWWW Rex screaming If I ever have to read another Publisher Letter like this I m going to jump off a bridge A little bridge of course it s not that big of a deal I just want to get wet and refreshed and wash the icky feeling of nutmeg off of me However If I ever write one like this please hunt me down and make me eat that magazine What s up hungry people It s Rex with EAT Magazine and I want to welcome you aboard the first issue Issue 001 of what we hope is going to be a super fun dining experience for all of us who EAT Fortunately for us that s everyone Hanging out with all of these restaurant owners lately has really made one thing clear to me They are all nuts What I mean is that behind every restaurant door is a person who had a drive a passion and a big giant crazy dream that drove them to do something that is really very difficult Opening up a restaurant Then keeping it functioning smoothly day after day is a huge undertaking One thing they all have in common is they just couldn t NOT do it Something inside pushed them to realize their dream of opening up their restaurant no matter how difficult no matter how many late nights or how great the cost Because a dream this big must be realized We are the ones who benefit from these crazy ideas that they took all the way to reality And there is plenty to enjoy around North Orange County I am pretty sure that I could write about them for years and never run out of material or an appetite to try them all Hopefully this little EAT Magazine experiment goes well and we will all see each other again in Issue 002 For now let s all sit back relax and EAT All the best Rex Rex Riffel Publisher www EatOCnow com Follow us on YouTube Facebook and Instagram EatOCnow New content uploaded constantly Rex with The Portland from Burger Parlor Watch Video at www EatOCnow com 3

Andrew and Rebecca with the latest in fall fashion Nachos Meatloaf white wine and the Michelada Jack had a dream When Jack Franklyn stepped out into the parking lot of Magnolia s Peach that fateful St Patrick s day painted green and dressed like a Leprechaun for work he was not in a great mood Jack had just been turned down for the tiny restaurant space in the Villa Del Sol that he had been trying so hard to secure This turn of events meant the crushing of his lifelong dream to own his own restaurant As often happens when you are in this type of mental place the world just seem to conspire to give you more of what you are feeling Harassment from a few guys hanging out nearby seemed appropriate It wasn t the first time Jack had been painted green but this would be his last It wasn t the first time Jack had been painted green but this would be his last As the heckling directed at Jack continued he lashed back What Jack didn t realize is that several of their friends were close by That s when Jack received the beating of his life This necessitated selling everything he had and going all in but Jack was already there mentally He had been all in for years just waiting for an opportunity The risk was worth the dream and Jack went for it The risk was worth the dream and Jack went for it Long nights and long days followed building out his restaurant space and working side by side with his then girlfriend now wife and mother of their three kids Jack never looked back Now 28 years later Heroes is in a much bigger space just down the street from the original location They are still serving up huge plates of food huge drinks and bags of peanuts in the fun environment full of antiques and photos of people Jack knows on the walls Jack can still be found there almost every day working in the restaurant and taking care of his staff and guests The fight is over but Jack s dream is still alive and well in Heroes When the beating was over Jack was left bloody and down with green paint smeared everywhere That was the day that Jack gave up the struggle It was all beyond him he just couldn t keep fighting and trying to control the world around him anymore He quit his job as a bar manager and took off to the river for a few days to clear his head and figure out his next move When he returned feeling better he had an message on his answering machine that the space was available again and if he still wanted it was his Rebecca with the Big One 19
