From birth through adulthood, play helps us explore, create, and make sense of the world around us. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely noted, “It is a happy talent to know how to play.”In our programs, we embrace play not just as a pastime, but as a powerful tool for growth. Whether it’s building relationships, discovering new ideas, or developing skills, we intentionally embed play into our work as a way to expand possibilities and open doors to lifelong learning.Northrop Education Center • 201 8th St NW • Rochester, MN 55901Ofce Hours: Monday-Friday • 8 AM-4:30 PM@parentsareimportantinrochester @ecferochestermn@RochesterCE @rochestermncommunityedTransportation available upon requestScan the QR code to book an appointment or call 507-328-4004.

Both parents and children participate in ECFE. The program recognizes that parents are a child’s rst and most important teacher and offers high-quality parent and early education. The mission of ECFE is to strengthen families with young children through education and support. We look forward to seeing you in one or more of our many ECFE class options.ECFE classes include the following components:PACT (Parent and Child Time): Class includes parent and child interaction time, circle time with books, songs, and activities all designed to enhance a child’s learning. Parents also get great ideas to take home to enjoy with the whole family.Parent Time: Parents participate in a discussion led by a licensed parent educator. The parent discussion focuses on research-based topics related to both child and parent learning, and also allows time to connect with other parents of young children.Children’s Time: While the parents are in the discussion, children are learning through play, activities, songs and literature designed to enhance development, creativity, and imagination. A licensed early childhood teacher facilitates the children’s classroom experience.

Teach the concept of time with calendars, paper chains and booksAdapted from “Early Childhood Parents”, May 2025, Vol. 29, No. 9Time concepts can be challenging for young children to master, because understanding it requires higher-order thinking skills. To develop your child’s sense of time:Keep a calendar in your child’s bedroom. Let your preschooler mark special days with stickers. Explain that calendars are read from left to right. Each morning, ask your child to cross off the day before. This helps your preschooler learn that the preceding day is over, and a new one has begun.Use time-related words when looking at a calendar: “Let’s put a sticker on tomorrow.” “We went to visit Grandpa yesterday.” “You have soccer on Wednesdays.” “Your birthday is on February 20.” “Today is Monday.”Count how many days there are until something fun. “Aunt Dot will be here in eight days!” Then, make a paper chain with one link for each day. Hang it in a place you and your child will notice. Each night, have your child tear off one link. Explain that just as the chain is getting shorter, so is the amount of time until the event.Read books about time. Try: » Chicken Soup with Rice: A Book of Months by Maurice Sendak. » Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward. » Can We Play: A Pop-Up, Lift-the-Flap Story About the Days of the Week by Mara Van Der Meer.
