Several studies indicate that physical activity reduces boredom, improves focus, behavior and self-esteem.Experts recommend 20 minutes of activity at least three days per week. To help your family reach that goal:• Schedule a regular time for daily exercise and stick to it. Think about when your child is likely to have the most energy.• Keep an exercise log. It’s fun to look through it and see how committed your family is to good health.• Take turns choosing the types of physical activity you do. If your child loves soccer, agree to play together at least once a week.• Get creative. Make a list of active things you and your child could do. You could jump in piles of leaves, y a kite or play hopscotch. On rainy days, you might make up a dance or build an indoor obstacle course.• Provide access to active toys, such as balls and jump ropes.• Drive less and exercise more. Could you walk to the library or to the store?• Use exercise rather than food as a reward. “After you pick up your toys, we can go to that new playground down the street!”• Limit screen time. Watching TV and playing games online doesn’t require much physical energy.Source: C.M. Di Liegro and others, “Physical Activity and Brain Health,” Genes, MDPI.Copyright © 2022, The Parent Institute®

Early Childhood Winter 2023 | www.rochesterce.org/register 10* = Partnership class = Online Class = Evening class Fun Figurine Ski Ramp Create your own at-home winter olympics using household items and some of your child’s favorite toys. This engaging STEM activity is great for children of all ages looking to test out their ideas. Materials:• Ramp: Can be made of boxes, the backs of puzzle boards, pillows, etc... Utilize different surfaces to increase or decrease the incline of the ramp.• Skis: craft sticks, at puzzle pieces, folded paper, spoons etc...Use different materials to see what will help the toys go down the ramps you’ve created. • Toys: use a variety of toys to be your skiers. To attach the toys to the skis you can use:• glue (if it won’t ruin the toy)• rubber bands• a pipe cleaner• or any other creative idea you haveReady, Set, Go!Explore the different ramps you make with your child. For younger children, model critical thinking about what they are doing. For older children, ask them open-ended questions such as “I wonder why that happened”, “What do you think will happen if... “ , “Which one do you think will go faster? How did you know?” Most importantly follow your child’s lead and have fun as you explore! INDOOR ACTIVITY!

It takes a village to raise a child, so stop by the ofce and let us introduce ourselves, help you navigate our program and welcome you into your NEW village.Northrop Education Center 201 8th St NW Rochester, MN 55901• Have your child string some dry macaroni to make a necklace. Together, count each piece as your child strings it.• Let your child see you try a food that is new or different. Talk about it.• Teach your child a new self-care skill today—buttoning a shirt, for example.• Give your child a folder to save special photos and letters in. This teaches children to care for important things.• Fill a “touch box” with small items—a marshmallow, a cotton ball, a pebble, etc. Without looking, can your child guess the objects by feel?• When your child asks you to play today, respond with “I’d love to!”• Have your child draw a picture of something that happened today. Then talk about it.• Offer choices today. Let your child choose between two shirts to wear or two foods to eat for lunch.• Dim the lights and slowly move the beam of a ashlight across the oor. Ask your child to jump over the beam or step on it.• See how long your child can keep a balloon aloft by batting it. This teaches eye-hand-coordination.• Glue photos of family members on paper. Ask your child to name them.• Encourage your child to try two motor tasks at the same time—for example, clapping hands while walking.Copyright © 2022 The Parent Institute®
