Prevention & Precaution!Fire Safety Tips for FamiliesPlaying with fire is no jokeThe U.S. Fire Administration estimates that 300 people arekilled each year as the result of children playing with fire. Have a plan for young children under six who cannot get outside bythemselves. In your plan, talk about who will help each child get outsafely.Children should know what to do when they hear a smoke alarm andthere is no adult around. Help them practice going to the outsidemeeting place.Teach children to NEVER go back inside a burning building. Once theyare out, stay out!Teach your child to get low and crawl on the ground, where the air isless smoky.Show a child how to use the back of their hand to check doors for heatbefore opening and to use a different way out if the door is hot. Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothesshould catch on fire.If your child needs to use an escape ladder, show them where youkeep it and practice how to use it.How to make a fire planYour ability to get out of your home during a fire depends on advancewarning from smoke alarms and advance planning. Fire can spread rapidlythrough your home, leaving you as little as one or two minutes to escapesafely once the smoke alarm sounds. Practice the planMake sure you’re practicing at least2x per year at different times of day.
