DPL DISPATCH ~ ISSUE 30 3 LEAGUE MATCH REPORTS – Saturday 27th of April 2024 BLANDFORD UNITED FC (0) 1 STURMINSTER NEWTON FC (0) 2 This Top of the Table clash did not dissapoint as a huge attendance of 738 witnessed Sturminster Newton beat their hosts to leap frog over them at the summit of the table in the Dorset Premeir Football League with just 2 games a piece to go. After last weeks disappointing end to their league unbeaten run away at inform Balti Sports at Weymouth College, Blandford United welcomed local rivals Sturminster Newton United infront of a packed out Park Road with the outcome potentially going some way to determining who will win the League this season. The first half was a very end to end affair with no quarter asked or given by either side. However, no one created any clear cut chances with both teams cancelling each other out. HT 0-0 The Royals started the second half on the front foot as they took the game to their opponents and on 53 minutes they took the lead when MARK FORD headed home following a surging run and cross from John. Back came the visitors who knew dropping points would see their title charge stalled, and on 65 minutes they equalised when ASHLEY CLARKE scored following good play. The remaining 25 minutes saw both sides ask questions but neither side could get infront, that was until the 88th minute when a ball into the Blandford box was turned into their own net to put the Cherries infront and spark jubilant scenes for the Stur faithfull, and that’s the way it stayed with a narrow 2-1 win for the visitors who now have their title aspirations in their own hands with 2 games to go.

DPL DISPATCH ~ ISSUE 30 4 Photos courtesy of: Simon Carlton - carltonphotography@live.com SHERBORNE TOWN FC RESERVES (0) 0 DORCHESTER SPORTS FC (3) 4 Dorchester Sports are one victory away from securing sixth place in the Dorset Premier Football League following a convincing 4-0 win at Sherborne Town Reserves. Sports’ second win in three games came after weathering a strong start by Sherborne, with the Zebras galloping out of the traps. Once Sports worked themselves in the game, they never looked back and took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute thanks to TOBY KELLYS first senior goal for the club. Joel Hewitt and Todd Coombs were both involved in the build-up, finding Owen Peart who crossed for Kelly to score at the back post. JOEL HEWITT doubled Sports’ advantage on 14 minutes, Peart grabbing his second assist as Hewitt nodded home. Sports did not have it all their own way as keeper Nick Hutchings had to save a one-on-one. Peart was denied a goal of his own for 3-0, seeing his penalty saved by the Zebras’ goalkeeper on 30 minutes. But OWEN PEART did grab a third for Sports just before the break, dispossessing a Sherborne defender in their own box before completing the formality of scoring. HT 0-3 After the break, JOEL HEWITT secured his brace when collecting a raking diagonal ball from Darren Watts before cutting inside and firing beyond the keeper for 4-0. Other chances came and went for Sports as Billy Brumble fired over from distance, while Hewitt and Kelly were denied by timely blocks. Lyes Selama blasted over and Alex

DPL DISPATCH ~ ISSUE 30 5 Godfrey had a shot cleared off the line after rounding the keeper, but the missed opportunities counted for little as Sports wrapped up the three points. Coach Simon Linard said: “It was nice to win because we’ve slipped up against Bridport and Poole Borough. “Sherborne are down the bottom as well, so we needed to win. We were good, it was a strong performance. Everybody was focused this week. “We were all disappointed by the Bridport defeat, we made a couple of changes and everyone did their bit.” Looking ahead to Blandford away, James told Echosport that his side would not be sucked into being cast as ‘party poopers’ with the Royals chasing the title. He said: “It’s an interesting last game, all we can do is go there and treat it as a normal game. I don’t think it’s going to be like that for Blandford. “We’re going to concentrate on ourselves and be the best we can. We’ve got to finish on a high, forget what their ambitions are. “If we get involved in that and the crowd, it’ll be harder for us.” Nick Hutchings and Darren Watts are unavailable, while Sam Duncalf and Elliott Browne return. Report courtesy of the: PORTLAND UNITED FC RESERVES (0) 0 MERLEY COBHAM SPORTS FC (0) 0 It was a 0-0 stalemate at the Camp & Satherley Stadium on Saturday as Portland Utd Res entertained Merley Cobham Sports in an evenly contested matchin the Dorset Premeir Football League. Portland were the first to show with Riley Greenwood bringing a sharp save from Andy Knights after he controlled and shot on the spin and Greenwood was unlucky again in the 7th minute when he was given a little room, he beat Ollie Green on his outside and shot sharply but the ball clipped the far post with Knights beaten. Cobham grew into the game and when Harvey Elsom found room in front of him in the 24th minute he set off on a mazey run and his shot was just a little too high. The dangerous Kingsley Eze-Sunday went close for Cobham just a minute later, he cut in beating two defenders and again, his shot was too high to bother Sam Modderidge in the Portland goal. The rest of the half saw a midfield battle with little being produced to bother either keeper and the sides went to the break all square. HT 0-0 The second half was virtually a carbon copy of the first period with both midfields challenging for ascendancy that never really eventuated and they really neutralised each other. Eze-Sunday was the main threat for Cobham and Camp was the main outlet for the Blues but both defences dominated most of the attacking play. I thought that Portland looked after the ball a little better throughout the game with Evans and

Page 7

DPL DISPATCH ~ ISSUE 30 6 McKechnie pulling most of the strings in midfield and the Blues probably carved out the better opportunities in the game but apart from a comfortable save by Moggeridge from Eze-Sunday on 75 minutes neither keeper had a save of any mention to make. Portland did have the ball in the net in the 86th minute but it was ruled out for an offside. So the end result saw Cobham finish up fifth in the League with Portland Utd Res sitting in sixth place, three points ahead of Dorchester Sports who still have a game to play and have a better goal difference. POOLE BOROUGH FC (1) 4 HAMWORTHY UNITED FC RESERVES (0) 1 Borough for third time this season took the Blandford Road “Derby” this time in convincing style against Hamworthy United Reserves at Turlin Moor in the Dorset Premier Football League, albeit aided by 2 OG’s After a bright start by both teams the deadlock was finally broken when Borough’s Conor Jevon broke down the right, wher he squared to KIERON DENTY Finish on 9 minutes. Both keepers were called into action with smart saves as both sides showed there intent going forward. The host’s Fendley was denied by the Hammers keeper and then the visitors went agonisingly close from a free kick just before the break. HT 1-0 Another early goal in the second half saw the visitors draw level with a close range finish from BAILEY ROWE but barely five minutes later the home side retook the lead courtesy of an unfortunate OG in the opposition box.The visitors again went close with a couple of efforts before Borough extended their lead further with yet another OG after the away stopper had somehow tipped Fu’s header onto the post, with the attempted clearance hitting a team mate and into the net. Borough even found time to miss a penalty when skipper Kenway saw his effort well saved, however, a good ball from Bascombe saw CONOR JEVON round the keeper and roll the ball in from close range to complete the scoring and secure the bragging rights.

BALTI SPORTS FC (0) 0 WIMBORNE TOWN FC RESERVES (5) 9 Balti Sports were brough right back down to earth after their win against the Royals last week as Wimborne Town Reserves taught them a goal finishing lesson at the College in the Dorset Premier Football League Wimborne Town Reserves dominated from started to finish in this game with the first goal fired into the far corner. 1 soon became 2 as Wimborne’s striker rounded the keeper to slot home. The 3rd goal was a cut back with the ball tapped home. Balti just couldn’t live with the movement and pace of Wimborne. 2 more goals followed for the

DPL DISPATCH ~ ISSUE 30 8 visitors, with both being good finishes in the box as a beleagured Balti had no answer to the relentless attacking play of their visitors. HT 0-5 Balti were on the ropes and with only 12 players available, Wimborne were ruthless in the second half causing huge threats from the wide areas and as more crosses went into their box, Wimborne increased their lead further with more crosses leading to more tap ins. Balti had no answer on the day and were completely out played by the best footballing team in the league. Oh so different from 7 days earlier !!! Wimborne’s goals were scored by Addwell Chipangura (x4) Heath Thornton (x2) Max Patmore, Cameron Mcmonagle & Toby Dinnivan.
