Dear readers Beverley Cuddy MILLIONS IN THE BANK Owen Sharp Dogs Trust CEO said The UK is fast heading towards a situation in which due to the cost of living crisis we ll have a surplus of dogs whose owners need to give them up but a deficit of people who can afford to take on a new dog In the charity s latest published annual report he also says Much of our fundraising activity had to cease and in 2020 our income fell by 7 million from what we had planned for originally Our brilliant team found innovative ways to deliver cost savings and fundraise to make sure that we can provide support for dogs and owners both now and in the future Let that sink in They were hoping for 7 million more in donations So how much did they get The 2020 annual report reveals Income has remained at a consistent level of 111 5m in 2020 2019 109 5m Net assets are now 187 8m compared to 170 8m The same report shows 26 556 owners contacted the charity in 2020 wanting to hand in their dog for rehoming But elsewhere in the report it shows 4 425 dogs were handed over by their owners What happened to the other 22 000 Beverley Cuddy is Dogs Today s Editor and publisher She shares her life with Betty an Old English Golden Retriever ish dog from Many Tears and Honey a Cocker Spaniel 4 Dogs Today September 2022 Illustration by Beverley Cuddy O ur lead story this month is brave Gary trying to save the pets left behind in Ukraine risking his life in a country now riddled with mines Dogs are far from safe here if you read the papers The Telegraph reported that one in five puppies is falling ill or dying before its first birthday The source for this statistic is the Kennel Club who surveyed 3 000 pet owners One in four reported either emotional turmoil or financial strife because of their puppy suffering poor health before the age of 12 months Elsewhere Dogs Trust reports receiving 4 370 calls from people wanting to give up their dogs in July alone a trend they say is increasing month onmonth and has doubled compared to the start of 2021 The calls the report says are at the highest level since Dogs Trust opened its contact centre in 2014 It doesn t reveal how many of those dogs were taken in by Dogs Trust to rehome A Dogs Trust poll of non dog owners in August asked whether the rising cost of living would prevent them from adopting or buying a dog Six out of 10 said it would How do we all get through these very bumpy months ahead Hopefully our roads are not as treacherous as those in Ukraine Should you be looking for a recession proof career judging by all the PR activity this summer the opinion poll business has never been busier There does seem to be a huge shortage of people coming up with ideas to make things better I may just be feeling overly grumpy maybe those in charge have it all under control My less than sunny outlook could be because I have a hernia and there s a year plus wait to get that fixed on the NHS My recent health issues and the problems in dog world seem remarkably similar The longer a problem goes unresolved the bigger it gets and the harder it is to fix With all the millions in the bank at the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust surely they have an emergency action plan to help dogs and their owners who don t Reading between the lines the Kennel Club is blaming breeders and Dogs Trust wants the public to donate more money yes they identify the public are short of money Elsewhere in Grimsby a man has been jailed for eight months for biting a police dog Is there something in the water Other than algae and sewage obviously P

Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI We have all seen videos and images of Ukrainian refugees crossing the Some people have travelled to Ukraine to try to stop a huge animal welfare border to safety along with their pets but what of the pets left behind crisis in the making On the frontline D riving a van from Hampshire all the way to Poland is no small feat but Gary Baxter and his DogsnHomes Rescue team knew that would be the easiest part of their journey On 8 July they would reach the border between Poland and Ukraine and then cross over for their biggest mission yet Relying on the support of Humane Society International UK DogsnHomes Rescue was part of an international group working alongside the Ukraine War Animals Relief Fund ARF and the White Angels On the van Gary carried 1 000 microchips two portable dual voltage cool boxes for the temperature sensitive veterinary supplies a large supply of calming aids medical equipment two way radios portable power supplies and over 400 collars as well as dog and cat food Gary explains We wanted to spay and neuter as many animals as possible up to 500 over the course of the mission lasting a couple of weeks We also wanted to microchip as many as possible in the hope that at least some may be reunited with their owners one day when they return home We d been at the border a few times before but this was my first time in Ukraine We started planning this operation about five weeks beforehand We needed to be fast and try to achieve what we had to as quickly as possible the situation could change so very quickly THOSE LEFT BEHIND The situation in Ukraine is indeed quite unique with millions of people displaced in a relatively short period of time countless pets were also left behind to stray Along with an already large stray population and the fact neutering is not as common in Ukraine as it may be elsewhere it presents an animal welfare time bomb A lot of people were unable to cross the border with their pets I saw refugees crossing with just a carrier bag of their possessions Gary says Many had to leave their pets behind when they were not allowed to get on trains and buses We know of a family outside Kyiv who had several dogs and cats and had been making arrangements to get them past the border But war came so quickly at their door and they had to run away They could only load in the car what dogs and cats they could grab at that moment and leave the rest behind It s easy for people who did not live through it to think they would do better plan better bring their pets at all costs but when the bombs fall you must run If you have children or elderly parents it s only natural that you will grab them first Many pets were left chained to fences and poles while it may seem callous Gary says this actually saved many lives It made it easier for people to find them and care for them Had their owners left them loose they may have become stray and it would have been much more difficult to help If you want to help a stray dog first you must catch it Not everyone however had good intentions September 2022 Dogs Today 7

Vet strength parasite protection We have seen what has happened to people s pets who were left behind when the invaders came Some were badly hurt killed or mutilated their ears and tails cut off We were told of some horrible things I will not get into detail but cruelty was inflicted on pets as well as people in this invasion Gary says In areas where Russian troops have retreated signs of war are everywhere On the road to Bucha there is a section of road maybe a mile with metal fencing at the side Gary says It looked like a sieve there were so many holes The intensity of the firepower there would have been unimaginable Many of the people who stayed in Ukraine did what they could to care for the pets left behind feeding them the best they could One lady lived in a small flat with 17 cats and two dogs she had rescued when 8 Dogs Today September 2022 the next door apartment block was bombed Gary and his team put out feeding stations on behalf of the charity Naturewatch in Borodyanka Horenka Hostomel Bucha Irpin and Poroskoten and were able to provide locals and small rescues with medication and food However their biggest goal was to neuter as many animals as possible to prevent a boom in the stray dog and cat population WAR OPERATIONS We had one vet with us along with three vet techs Gary says We had three or four teams at any one time working either in a clinic we rented for the day or for the week or in any buildings we could borrow A lot had been under heavy fire riddled with bullet holes no glass left in the window full of debris no running water no nothing We would get the broken glass off a desk lay a sheet on it and it became an operating table The smell of fire damage lingered in most of these towns We made do with what we had much like the people who lived there I saw so many badly damaged buildings with entire walls torn down you could see inside into their living rooms and bedrooms and still people lived there I was quite shocked to see that The team eventually exceeded their original target covering the areas of Kyiv Gostomel Hlevakha Vorzel and Rzhyshchiv When word spread that they were offering free neutering microchipping and vaccinations people with pets in the area were quick to take advantage just as the team had hoped they would We did almost three times the number of spay neuter and vaccinations the total to date is 1 559 with 1 959 microchipped photographed and uploaded to cloud ARF has also funded more spay and neutering in Odessa to cover a further 1 000 dogs and cats Gary says Easy to apply Fast acting Long lasting No brand works faster or lasts longer bobmartinUK Bob Martin and Bob Martin Clear Plus are registered trade marks of Martin Martin Holdings Based on AVM GSL Spot Ons containing Fipronil and S Methoprene for dogs Use biocides safely Always read the label and product information before use Active substances permethrin tetramethrin S methoprene ES T 1 8 9 2

The vast majority of microchipping took place at Sirius Animal Shelter near the border with Russia and Belarus There are over 3 000 dogs and 300 cats at the shelter and visiting it was an incredible experience Gary says So many pets to look after to feed and keep safe and there were only seven people to do it The ratio was absolutely insane So few people must work really hard to keep up welfare standards With so many tasks to handle sometimes they just cannot cope Yet the people there are doing a fantastic job with what they have One of the most chilling experiences was realising after arriving at a shelter near Bucha that the road the team used had been mined by the Russians and some devices still remained Gary recalls As we drove Google Maps took us through a route that seemed shorter We didn t really think anything of it and we kept 10 Dogs Today September 2022 driving on this road through the forest We didn t become concerned until the road narrowed more and more and eventually it was all gravel very bumpy But at that point we had come too far to turn back and we pressed on CLOSE CALL Once we got to the shelter the owner Sasha came to greet us saying we were lucky to be alive That was when we found out the road we had just travelled was used by locals during the occupation until the Russians had found and mined it and now no one travelled it any more It was quite chilling realising we could have hit a landmine and been blown up any moment And later we learned two cars had blown up in the same area that morning It was a harsh reminder of what it means to be in a war zone The forest road seemed so calm so picturesque we had forgotten for a moment where we were Despite the close call Gary is determined to return to Ukraine I definitely want to return before there is snow on the ground which would make it so difficult to work as winters there can be hard on people and pets What we did was a learnin progress understanding what is happening and what they need The next phase is to use our experience to work strategically we want to bring in many more parties to work together cooperating with NGOs to target one region after another so we can cover a larger area The number of animals we spayed may be high for the amount of time we were able to spend on the ground but when you think of the situation in Ukraine it is a drop in the ocean there are millions more animals to target It may seem a minor problem among the many that Ukrainians are facing but if the situation is not tackled if you do not neuter at this stage you have a worse problem down the road Now back in the UK Gary and his team are already busy raising funds for their next mission in Ukraine In a social media post detailing his journey in Ukraine Gary muses I will always remember what I experienced while I was there As someone who has come across awful rescue stories in the course of my charity work I can honestly say nothing prepared me for what I saw in Ukraine The situation is truly dire for the brave people who are still there and those who have chosen to look after the helpless dogs and cats rather than remove themselves to a place of safety There are threats and dangers at every turn and the incredible spirit of those who love and care for the animals is truly inspiring The need is endless P DogsnHomes Rescue staff are already planning their next mission in Ukraine To donate towards vital medical equipment and food for Ukrainian dogs and cats visit their fundraising page www justgiving com campaign spay ukraine Natural Range SPECIALISED RECIPES FOR DIFFERENT NEEDS AND LIFE STAGES OF YOUR DOG 1 0 O F F C O D E D O G S TO DAY 2 2 10 discount code applies to all products Single use only Valid until 31 12 22 O R D E R O N L I N E T O D A Y AT W W W N A T U R A L I N S T I N C T C O M OR CALL 01276 608500 June 2020 Dogs Today 11

Words photos JESSICA GILMOUR Setting up our daycare was not an overnight decision mainly due to my reservations and desire to only create a genuinely beneficial environment for dogs We spent years researching learning speaking to the industry s leading professionals in canine behaviour trainers dog walkers groomers and owners to ensure that what we created was tailored to the dogs needs as well as offering support for owners Daycare falls into these three main categories Large scale doggy daycares Daycare s new dawn It s time to re examine dodgy daycare the right set up could enrich your dog s life and provide vital social connections T hroughout 15 years of breeding every time I heard the words doggy daycare my toes would curl The thought of one of the puppies I bred so carefully being introduced to that type of environment was a huge worry I had visions of a massive horde of dogs charging around with no structure or guidance dogs picking up bad habits feeling overwhelmed and under pressure With this vision in mind I advised every new owner to be extremely careful when thinking about sending a dog to a daycare facility especially a puppy Yet fast forward to now and here I am writing an article about daycares and how beneficial they can be for many types of dog This rather drastic change of opinion has been a process that has occurred over time Our understanding of what a dog requires to develop and function to be social happy and well adjusted has grown tremendously There 12 Dogs Today September 2022 is a newfound respect for what a dog needs as opposed to what will earn the most money or is the most convenient This combined with improvements to local council licensing and guidelines on all aspects of animal care has given a once unregulated industry a muchneeded overhaul So here I am having done a complete 360 and now running my own dog club I can tell you from the inside out what to expect what to look for and why daycare might be just what your dog needs WHAT IS DAYCARE Doggy daycare is a concept created in America The first official daycare was set up in New York City in 1987 As society s attitude to dogs changed they were welcomed into the home more as companions rather than working animals Pet dogs became a huge part of many people s lives more money was being spent and the dog industry grew At the same time more people were working full time and with dogs now seen as family the need developed for an alternative to traditional kennels Not all dog daycares are created equal of course As with any commercial business involving dogs there are varying levels of professionalism quality of care and available facilities These often go hand in hand with the ethics and motivation behind the business There is profit to be made with any area of the pet industry and dog care is no different Knowing what you are looking for is vital when it comes to trusting your dog in the hands of someone else When we set up our daycare it was an organic process We were always welcoming back the dogs we bred to stay plus those of friends and family As the requests for dog care kept coming and faced with the lack of options locally we were pointed in one direction creating an official licensed daycare solution of our own Based on the original American concept that arose in the 90s these large daycares are often quite high energy and busy They can work well for a confident easygoing dog but not as well for others Often there s a higher number of dogs that get on with it themselves while being overseen by staff rather than perhaps receiving more individual care The dogs stay play and exercise in one place together at the same time Matched daycare This sub category to the bigger daycares often have a more personal feel with a higher staffto dog ratio say eight dogs to one staff member The dogs will be matched according to size and energy levels often with plenty of space and good access to outside areas and activities for enrichment and stimulation They may offer specialist puppy training and have a background in training and behaviour Home daycare These small scale daycares are often run from a person s home in the garden of the business owner with their own dog s The dogs will be well vetted as they are in the house and are expected to be well behaved The dogs will be taken from the home to be walked throughout the day When deciding which option best fits your dog consider the following Facilities and space The first step is a full tour of the facilities If the daycare will not show you around where your dog is staying then walk away they should be proud of their facilities and recognise the importance of a tour to pet parents It is very important that you view everything when other dogs are there This will not only give you chance to see the space and facilities but will give you a feel for how the dogs are interacting with each other and the staff Look for relaxed happy dogs with calm body language Do however expect there to be a time limit to your tour as the staff will be busy and will want to get back to their routine as swiftly as possible When dealing with a large group of dogs space is crucial Space creates options and reduces stress and pressure If a daycare feels cramped it s likely to be a stressful environment for a dog The staff also need to be able to move dogs around during the day Being in one room or unit all day is not a stimulating environment for a dog so look for plenty of outside areas and different spaces and areas that the dogs can enjoy throughout the day for activities as well as rest These help keep the dogs stimulated but also help reduce stress and it s important that a dog can find its own space away from others if needed One of the most common comments we get when doing a tour is the noise There is none No barking screeching and whimpering the dogs are peaceful and relaxed September 2022 Dogs Today 13

Licensing Whichever provider you leave your dog with must be licensed and listed with the local council It is easy to assume that because establishments advertise they are fully licensed but this is not always the case so check thoroughly The process of becoming licensed is a very in depth one taking months of time and effort and rightly so Licences are hard to obtain and the standards are high You can contact the council direct to obtain details of all local professionals It is also worth mentioning that insurance is invalid if the provider does not hold a council approved licence Induction or trial process Equipment Have a good look at water bowls and drinking areas toys and play equipment The basics should be clean and in good order Disease and illness can pass quickly through the environment if there is inadequate cleaning A responsible daycare will be pleased to answer questions about their hygiene policy and cleaning routines Fencing gates and buildings Every area needs to be fully secure Fencing needs to be strong well maintained and safe Gates and doors need airlocks to prevent dogs bolting through and to ensure the dogs are secure and safe at all times Isolation and rest areas Rest is so important particularly for puppies so there needs to be a calm and peaceful area should a dog need help to rest which is often the case with a new member to daycare The area needs to be comfortable and secure There also needs to be an isolation area for emergencies so discuss this on your visit What do they do if a dog becomes upset injured or stressed Is there an area where a dog can recover away from others should they need to Staff ratio Ideally you want eight dogs to one member of staff or 10 dogs 14 Dogs Today September 2022 to one member which is the minimum requirement set in place by Defra The more staff the better especially with puppies At our centre we have four pups to one staff member to ensure they are very carefully monitored and supported throughout the day Watch the staff with your dog How do they interact Are they relaxed confident and most importantly kind Watch how the other dogs respond to the staff too Qualifications and training Chat to staff about training and qualifications Canine first aid is crucial as is a clear understanding of canine behaviour Certified qualifications are ideal but also ask about the staff s experience When you are dealing with animals there is only so much you can learn in a classroom practical first hand experience is also a huge advantage Daycare is not an alternative to dog training but the staff will be experienced with handling dogs in many cases are qualified in aspects of training and behaviour and are more than capable of continuing your training Will they help the dog develop its understanding of the daycare experience Dogs need consistency Will they embrace your routine or even suggest other ways to help your dog progress All reputable daycares will have a trial or induction process if they do not walk away This session is when your dog is introduced to the facilities staff and eventually the other dogs and you will get to see the set up if you have not already During this session you will get a good feel for the daycare and how it will work for you Imagine going to a dinner party and not knowing anyone when suddenly all 15 people approach you as you walk through the door wanting to shake your hand or hug you It is the same for a dog when they get introduced to a wall of new dogs pushing to meet them in a completely new environment with new sounds and new smells It s a sensory overload Some dogs will not mind others will find this impossible We often have dogs attend an induction with us and the owners explain they have tried other daycares only to be sent home due to the dog being fearful or not enjoying themselves when really all the dog needed was some time and space to process this new environment If the daycare is not understanding of this and your dog needs that extra support definitely find somewhere else that will provide that Minimum required days This is a recurring question I get asked What if I don t need once a week as we just want ad hoc daycare This is really down to the preference of the individual daycare We have a requirement for a minimum of once a week This is not just because we require the regular business but it s actually for the benefit of the dogs that attend our centre When a dog joins us for the day it takes time to build a bond and relationship If the gap between visits is too long it can take time for the dog to settle again It will also affect the other dogs in their company In the long run it is much more beneficial to all the dogs to have the consistency RIGHT FOR MY DOG It is often thought that daycare is for dogs that have busy owners who work full time That is sometimes the case but we also have families that work from home or those that are looking to add to their dogs lives and give them another outlet than just walks in the park We look after one young dog once a week who is with her owners all day every day while they work from home She is becoming increasingly anxious around bigger dogs out on walks Her owners explained their concerns and we arranged for her to attend on a day with bigger dogs that we knew would be well matched to help her These dogs let her build her confidence from a distance By the end of the day she was running alongside them and playing she just needed time and space to process her concerns and a safe place to overcome them This positive experience transferred into her daily life at home and on walks This is a beautiful example of how when managed well daycare can be so much more than just a place to send your dogs when you are busy P September a minefield trying to work out which type and breed is right for you Analysing the kind of home you can provide the activities that you want to do with a dog and the main motivations for taking on dog ownership are just some of the considerations Coupled with internet experts and the wellmeaning advice you are bound to get from people who already have a dog it is very very tricky to work out what s best for you and your lifestyle As a result we often fall into the trap of looking at a dog and liking what we see visually but appearances never tell the whole story While some of us are looking for a companion others are searching for an active walking buddy Some people require a support dog to play an assistance role and others want a competitor to take part in dog sports The reasons vary greatly as do the breeds to fit those roles Do you fancy a small dog a fluffy dog or a shaggy dog Do you want a friendly dog a watchdog or a working dog There are so many questions that only you can within it that have been developed to assist us in our work For example gundogs were bred to retrieve game terriers to catch and kill vermin pastoral to herd sheep and cattle working to guard and protect and toys to be our companions Each of those groups has been developed for different tasks and all have different superskills and specialities Having spent many years developing these canine super skills in our current world fewer and fewer dogs are required for working roles and there are more pet homes than ever So these inherited super skills that are hard wired and ingrained in the DNA of our dogs show themselves in a range of behaviours that we see in our pets today Sadly they are not always desired What can that look like A Border Collie that never gets to undertake its natural herding behaviour may end up chasing cars A terrier that does not express its need to catch and kill vermin may end up killing a pet rabbit A toy breed that gets left alone will often display separation anxiety Understanding our breeds and their likely behaviours is key to finding the perfect pooch Puppies are not a blank canvas and although experiences and environment play a role and there is always an exception to a rule generally a collie will always want to herd sheep and a sighthound will always chase bunnies CROSSBREEDS RESCUES Crossbreeds are hugely popular and as well as all of their loveable qualities we are seeing more and more conflicting behaviours emerging in some crosses This stems from an incompatible breed group mixture If you cross two breeds within the same group two herding dogs for example they might not be the same breed but they are likely to be fairly similar in their behaviours However if you breed a dog from the pastoral group and a dog from the gundog group you are likely to get two sets of differing behaviours which can be quite conflicting Being clear on ancestry can set you up for success when living with a crossbreed dog If you do not Words BERNARD BALE I t s true Miley said Music changes and careers are up and down but dogs never change They love you no matter what If you have a bad day they cheer you up and if you have a good day they celebrate with you that s what makes them so special Miley s career follows in the footsteps of her famous dad Billy Ray Cyrus and so does her love of dogs I was born and raised in Tennessee with a younger brother and sister and two half brothers and a half sister she revealed There was a lot of energy in the home and that was added to by dogs It could be chaotic at times but there was never a shortage of fun That s one of the great things about dogs they are always happy to be what you want or need them to be You want to have fun that s fine You want to laze about and read a book they are happy to laze about with you If you want to go out for a walk in the rain they ll greet you when you come back Miley is an international star with millions of fans Perhaps she couldn t have been anything else because of the success of her singing star father and other members of the family who have made their mark DESTINED TO SING Miley s smiley thanks to dogs International singing star Miley Cyrus always has dogs at the heart of her home and admits they are more important to her than her music 18 Dogs Today September 2022 I think it was natural for me to become what I am she said I am very grateful of course and I have a kind of love hate thing going on with it I don t like constantly being photographed but if the cameras were not there I would probably wonder why or what I had done wrong Miley s rise to fame began when she decided at school that she wanted to act and her first real job was acting alongside her father in the comedy drama Doc A few other roles followed and then she suddenly shot to fame when Disney cast her in the starring role of Hannah Montana That was the real beginning for me both in acting and in singing Sometimes I m not sure which I am because I enjoy both so much I guess I am just a performer I love to do concerts in front of big crowds they are fantastic and I m always so thankful to the fans who come along to enjoy them Can you imagine if nobody showed up Away from the spotlight Miley likes watching films and listening to other singers but animals are something she has always been passionate about CREEPY CATS I love animals and I hate the thought of any of them suffering she said I just like being with them enjoying their company I like horses but I don t really want to ride them I just like meeting them and watching them I don t love being on a horse it s just not my thing I feel kinda bad about them having to carry me around Like I just want to pet you I don t really want to put you to work I find cats are creepy very beautiful and independent but still creepy Every time I see a cat I think it s gonna turn on me It s gonna turn for the worst I love them but they do worry me I have a respect for little dogs too I had a Yorkshire Terrier and if I was a rat it definitely would have eaten me And Chihuahuas are the most scary animals on the planet I m terrified of Chihuahuas I still love them to bits though I know it s not them it s me Miley is keen on rescuing dogs and has adopted quite a few through the years and it is rare that she has just one dog at her home Dogs are irresistible and great to have around she said I was so upset when Mary Jane passed away We had been together for a long time and I couldn t believe that she was gone I was devastated and I made a compilation of our times together and wrote a little song about her It made me feel that she was still around and that was such a comfort She was such a great character they all are really I don t know what it is about dogs and other animals really but once they get under your skin they are there for ever There are people who look at you and think you are crazy for having such feelings but how can you not have those feelings I don t understand it when people don t feel that very special bond between humans and dogs Sometimes I hear people talking about dogs without really knowing them I know that Pit Bulls come in for a lot of criticism but they are dogs who have had a bad image created for them by humans If you have a one on one with a Pit Bull you will find that they have the same sense of fun and loyalty as any other dog that wants to love and is loved Miley s other dogs include Emu Bean Barbie Happy and Floyd and now Angel has settled in as part of the family The others all greeted Angel when she joined us said Miley She was accepted straight away and she was so pleased to be with us We adopted her from a rescue centre and she had been pretty miserable because she d had a tough life before she was rescued Not now though she is happy the rest of my canine family are happy and I am so happy that we are all together It makes life so much better to have dogs around P September 2022 Dogs Today 19

Words DR JAMIE ARATHOON Assistance agency New research explores how the agency of assistance dogs their ability to act through their own decision making is vital to the care they provide their human partners S itting in Beth s house in a small coastal town we had been chatting about her relationship with Daisy her Labrador assistance dog Daisy helps Beth by picking up and bringing items pushing pulling doors open and pressing an emergency button when Beth is unable to move Daisy was in the room taking an active role in the discussion moving between me and Beth at first unsettled by my presence in their home Daisy often vocalised loudly and was acutely aware of my movements but once familiarised with me she tried to sit on my knee and put her head on my lap At two separate points during the interview T he above vignette comes from my research on assistance dog partnerships with the charity Dog AID which helps physically disabled people train their pet dogs to become assistance dogs The vignette alludes to one of my main aims to explore the care practices of the partnership Agency and sentience were described by participants as a valued surprise One interviewee Sara said He has done things for Daisy did something peculiar The first time she got up and left the room only to come back carrying a basket with training equipment The second time Daisy left she walked back in carrying Beth s walking stick placing it proudly next to Beth and sat down Now I do not know if you have seen a dog carry a walking stick but it was quite a funny sight But besides being funny these events raised questions in my mind Despite not asking for either of these items Daisy collected them and took them to Beth This got me thinking more about the value of a dog s agency and how dogs care and why example this leaning and cuddling into Sara s shoulder He didn t start training for me till he was four and a half and he had never ever sat on anybody s shoulder like this Raven old assistance dog did it all the time because she was small she would always do it and it helps with the pain So at four and a half years old he suddenly starts doing it and I was kinda like what no training nobody asked him to do it he just jumped up and started doing it no encouragement Sara s surprise at Pepper cuddling into her shoulder a form of deep pressure therapy that eases her pain is an important act of care for her It was not taught and relies on Pepper s agency in recognising Sara s pain and her actions to ease her pain For Sara this is a valued form of care that goes beyond the physical tasks that Pepper is trained to complete Sara deems Pepper to care through these actions EARTHING QUAKE About the author Dr Jamie Arathoon holds a PhD in human geography from the University of Glasgow Their PhD thesis was completed in collaboration with Dog Aid a national charity that trains physically disabled people to train their pets to be their assistance dogs Jamie has presented at me like that puppy dog eyes While all the assistance dogs of Dog AID are trained to provide physical assistance the participants I talked to recognise the benefits to their emotional and mental wellbeing June describes how her dog s physical actions help ease her anxiety Through different forms of tactile engagement Quake can keep June in the present and help her manage her anxiety As a form of care for June s mental wellbeing this is invaluable Within this research participants actively described their assistance dogs as carers or as occupying caring roles Pepper is family counsellor confidante carer and loved one Sara Daisy is my pet and my assistance dog but also my carer Beth The way I see him is as a partner He is a partner that helps me a bit like a human partner in respects to doing tasks for each other OK he can t make me a cup of tea but he can do so much for me that somebody else wouldn t do Samantha While the above quotes play on anthropomorphised understandings of assistance dogs as carers the participants all show the value of the care provided to them by their dogs Samantha however makes an important distinction between human care and canine care She places value on Bertie s canine sensibilities how he can provide care that humans cannot through his dogginess This is important because it is the influence on emotional and mental wellbeing gained through care from an assistance dog that can lead to a range of social impacts such as increased confidence going out more meeting new people reducing isolation and loneliness and enrolling in college they also care about people with PTSD but no there is no need for any legislation restricting the sale of fireworks Our current legislation is certainly enough How come you keep signing the same every year before change doesn t seem to be forthcoming in England indeed in the midst of the political turmoil even the government s flagship Kept Animals Bill has been pushed to the sidelines In Scotland however something significant has happened the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles Scotland bill passed following a Scottish Parliament debate introducing a fireworks licensing system with mandatory safety training for people wishing to purchase and use fireworks In addition It also introduces powers for local authorities to designate firework control zones restrictions on the supply and use of fireworks and a new offence to criminalise the supply of fireworks and pyrotechnics to under 18s Being in possession of a firework or other pyrotechnic in a public place or at certain places or events without reasonable excuse also becomes an offence Community safety minister Ash Regan said This ground breaking new legislation will improve the lives of people right across Scotland This is not a ban on fireworks We still want people to enjoy them safely for example attending organised displays But this vitally important step will make firework use more predictable and safer The bill will ensure appropriate action can be taken over the dangerous or disruptive use of fireworks as well as reducing the misuse of pyrotechnic devices such as flares 30 Dogs Today September 2022 Road to regulation The Scottish Government The bill is the final legislative part of work towards improvements in firework safety which began in 2019 with an overwhelming response to a consultation on the use of fireworks across over 16 000 responses delivering a very clear message on the desire for change This led to the creation of the Fireworks Action Plan and the establishment of the Firework Review Group chaired by Alasdair Hay The group made a series of recommendations for legislative and non legislative changes to reduce the harm and the disturbance from firework use A further consultation last year ahead of the bill s introduction further demonstrated a strong desire for change Analysis of the 2021 consultation responses showed 84 of respondents agreed a fireworks licensing system should be introduced in Scotland The bill received backing from a coalition of professional medical bodies including the BMA the Royal College of Ophthalmology and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand along with support from emergency services and animal charities Regan added I am deeply grateful for the valued support and consideration this bill received from NHS staff the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service the Scottish SPCA and Police Scotland Gilly Mendes Ferreira head of innovation and strategic relations for the Scottish SPCA said The passing of this bill will help to tackle the impact that private use in particular can have and help to keep communities across Scotland safe We always ask that the public enjoy fireworks responsibly and be mindful of the negative effect their misuse can have on people and animals The British Veterinary Association BVA while welcoming the bill was more cautious expressing concern that the measures do not go far enough BVA junior vice president Malcolm Morley said Loud and high pitched fireworks can cause extreme stress and upset for many species of animal as well as having the potential to cause pain and injury if an animal becomes panicked or a firework gets out of control These measures are therefore a very welcome step in the right direction It is vital that the Scottish Government now makes sure that there is adequate resource and guidance in place to ensure these new important rules can be properly enforced LEGAL LOOPHOLES We remain concerned about loopholes left by exemptions for public displays to continue to take place in designated Firework Control Zones and the lack of licensing requirements for public displays and organised events These loopholes have the potential to be exploited and may mean that these displays still have the potential to cause stress harm and potential injury for animals nearby Other critics of the new legislation have raised concerns including the possibility that this may lead to a black market of fireworks and that people may get around the regulation via online purchases or by simply crossing the border into England to buy fireworks freely one of those options would be significantly harder if legislation were to be introduced in England too Only time will tell whether this bill will make a real difference or if it will need some corrections in order to protect vulnerable animals and people as it is meant to do No piece of legislation is perfect but a flawed step forward is still a step forward and at the very least it shows awareness of the leads in public places unless otherwise stated There are far too many unfortunate incidents due to dogs running free April Truscott Smart My dogs absolutely love running around off lead and I could never give them enough exercise if I didn t let them off They are small friendly dogs who enjoy meeting others and playing with them I would hate to live in a world where they could never run free TO WALK When walking your dog especially off lead think about the environment and what s there For example woodland walks are generally cooler and tend not to have as many grass seeds as meadows and open fields Farm fields could have crops that pose as much of a threat as grass seeds barley and wheat for example have similar seeds to foxtail grasses and are sharp and robust The beach is often a good choice but please consider the heat time of day any dog restrictions and who else is using the beach and rinse sand away at the earliest opportunity CHECKING FOR SEEDS want advice from someone with personal experience of the issue Legs Start at the top and work down checking inside the armpits and joints as more mobile areas cause grass seeds to migrate faster Pads Lifting the dog s foot back look in between the pads gently pulling the pad apart and checking if the seed is lodged in any pockets of hair Again breeds with more fur are more likely to pick up the seeds in the pads Between the toes Gently part each toe on the top of your dog s foot and check that seeds are not hidden in between This is a very common entry point for a seed to enter the dog s body Nose to tail When checking the coat generally move front to back checking each section in turn Longer coated breeds and fluffy dogs are more prone to picking up grass seeds because of their fur So be sure to part the 2022 Nose and eyes Always check around your dog s nose and eyes as it s easy for them to pick a grass seed when sniffing the ground even on the side of a path or when running in long grass Check both nostrils the fur on the face and examine any folds of skin your dog may have Gently open each eye and check they are clear Ears Lift ear flap and look into the ear checking a seed has not started to travel down the ear canal Also check each ear front and back Breeds that have long ears that are especially fluffy will be more prone to picking up the seeds so part the fur and go through the dog s ear fur with a brush and a comb Hygiene area As your dog walks around sniffing and exploring they naturally pass by long grasses even in built up areas Particularly when they go to the toilet they can pick up seeds in this area of their body To check for seeds here if your dog will let you gently turn the dog on to its back and check the groin area and in between the back legs BLUE CROSS SAYS Grass seeds are a common problem particularly during the summer months They are attached to the tops of long grass stems and can easily brush off on to your dog during walks Although tiny they have the potential to cause real pain to your dog The seeds have pointy ends and are very sharp so they easily become trapped in a dog s fur and can burrow down the coat to pierce the skin Unfortunately in rare cases the grass seed can go under the skin and travel to other areas of the body They have even been known to end up in the chest area The seeds can also get stuck in eyes and ears Once they start travelling around the body they can be very difficult to find All dogs can be affected by grass seeds but they cause much more of a problem in breeds with feathery toes that enjoy bounding through long grass such as Springer Spaniels It is a good idea for owners to check the bits of their dogs with long hair in particular the feet and ears after exercise especially if you have walked through areas with long grass Typically with a grass seed in the paw owners will notice a painful swelling between the toes Dogs who have seeds stuck inside their paws are also likely to lick at them constantly and vigorously and be limping Your dog may suddenly start shaking their head and pawing at their ear after a walk if they have one or more seeds down the ear Sudden onset violent sneezing may mean a seed in the nose Keep hair around ears and paws short to minimise the risk of grass seeds sticking and burrowing into the skin Inspecting your dog after a walk and removing any seeds will also help reduce the likelihood of any penetrating the skin If you get back from a walk and notice a grass seed in the coat or on the surface of your dog s skin remove it straight away But if you spot a seed that has started to burrow into your dog s skin if your dog is licking or chewing at a sore place or you think your pet might have a seed in their eyes or ears contact your vet SEED REMOVAL If you find a grass seed that has pierced or entered your dog s skin get your vet to double check the point of entry to make sure the whole seed is out Any remaining organic material of the seed and the entry point pose a risk of infection abscesses or complications If you are concerned about removing a grass seed or that not all of the seed has come out always consult your vet If your dog groomer finds a grass seed they should always tell you show you the entry point and advise on your next course of action September 2022 Dogs Today 49

aware of when it comes to your female dog s first season T he latest scientific evidence shows that neutering your dog prematurely can affect their long term health and wellbeing However if you have a female dog then choosing to neuter later means learning how to manage her through her first seasons Depending on the breed females come into season every six months Small breeds can be more regular as often as three times a year and very large breeds may only cycle every 12 18 months Juvenile females often have a silent season to start with The season may not be obvious with little in the way of physical signs It can sometimes take well over a year for a female to develop a regular cycle Each female is different just like women and development rates can vary 50 Dogs Today September 2022 FALSE OR PHANTOM PREGNANCY SPOTTING THE SIGNS Let s break this down into four bite sized chunks so you know what to look for when you are trying to fathom where your dog is in her cycle Stage 2 Oestrus this is the mating phase and usually lasts around five to seven days Blood flow will slow and then stop and the discharge changes to a straw colour Your dog will be open to being mated during this phase Stage 1 Proestrus is when your dog s body is getting ready to mate It averages nine days but can last anywhere from three to 17 days Her vulva will swell and you may notice a bloody discharge During this stage of the heat cycle your dog will be attractive to a male but she will not be happy to be mated Stage 3 Dieostrus follows oestrus and is the phase when your dog s body will either proceed with the pregnancy or return to normal as her vulva returns to its usual size and the vaginal discharge disappears Stage 4 Anoestrus is the resting phase between seasons A phantom pregnancy may occur regardless of whether she was mated during her season You would likely spot the first signs a few weeks after her season when your bitch may display nesting behaviour and will often carry toys or random items around as if they were her puppies This can be a stressful time as females will often produce milk as though feeding puppies Phantom pregnancies will generally resolve on their own after two to three weeks However when a female has suffered with this condition once it is likely to happen again Neutering is the recommended course of action MANAGING WALKING Walking a female when she is in season involves planning around when and where there are no other male dogs around or it could become a challenge for both sets of owners Keeping her on the lead is the only responsible course of action remember she may seek a mate herself A good alternative for walks during this period is enrichment games brain training games and scent work activities at home If your female is accidentally mated by a dog do not try to separate them If the dog has tied with her you will injure them both Seek veterinary attention for a course of mismating injections to halt the development of the pregnancy There are sprays available to put an entire male off the scent but an unplanned unwanted pregnancy in an immature female is not worth the risk so make sure you walk in a secure dog free area and keep your in season bitch on the lead WHEN IS IT OVER You will know the season has passed and that it is safe to start walking again once her physical symptoms have passed usually after three weeks Her vulva will return to its normal size the bleeding will stop and all signs of the season will disappear WOULDN T A LITTER BE NICE There is no benefit to the bitch having her go through a pregnancy because it would be nice for her to have a litter before she is neutered There are plenty of unwanted dogs in rescue centres without adding to them Breeding dogs is a huge responsibility and one that pet owners should swerve Spaying your pet when she is physically ready is the simplest course of action to avoid this micromanagement being an ongoing issue Females can be spayed three months from the end of their last season This is the safest time for the operation to take place as all the blood vessels to the reproductive organs will have shrunk back to their normal size reducing the
