Words ALESSANDRA PACELLI When Wendy Hayes began fostering a pregnant rescue dog from Belarus she for over two weeks the first known person to contract brucellosis from a dog had no idea it would cost her own dogs their lives and land her in hospital in the UK Now her greatest fear is that she may not be the last 10 Dogs Today October 2022 Moosha hen Moosha a German Shepherd cross from Belarus arrived at Wendy Hayes home in Stoke on Trent nothing seemed out of the ordinary She was the fifth dog Wendy fostered for Paw Help UK Rescue and Adopt a charity dedicated to finding UK homes for dogs rescued in Poland Ukraine and Belarus I began fostering for them in October last year Wendy recalls I had previously tried to volunteer for rescues in the UK but their criteria was so strict I was rejected outright I am immunocompromised my husband is over 75 we were not even considered for fostering Neither her health nor her husband s age were an issue for Paw Help UK however The first four dogs I fostered for Paw Help UK Rescue all went on to wonderful forever homes after staying with me never had a problem with them Wendy recalls Moosha was the first pregnant dog I had ever taken on Due to the ages of my own dogs I usually fostered slightly older or disabled dogs but the rescue was really desperate for someone to take in Moosha and eventually I volunteered Moosha arrived at Wendy s house on 21 March 2022 and got on well with the resident dogs Benson Dougie Max and Tiny Wendy thought she had time to prepare for the upcoming birth as Moosha was supposedly not due until mid April but things took a sudden turn just two nights later I didn t realise anything was wrong until she began getting restless in the early hours of 23 March Wendy recalls I was sleeping with her downstairs She woke me up and I thought it was to go to the toilet so I let her out She was quite frantic She went outside but I couldn t see what she was doing until my security light came on I noticed she was eating something and I thought she was eating poo and then I realised she was nibbling at a pup in its sack Moosha ate the stillborn pup and birthed nine more all stillborn She was having them all over my house my emergency vets tried to talk me through what to do Wendy recalls I managed to grab one of the pups but it was clearly dead I was hesitant to handle it as Moosha had only been here two days She had little time to get to know me before this started and I was afraid she may turn on me if she saw me holding her stillborn pups She wanted the pup I had so I let her have it she ate it They were all stillborn and she ate each of them It was a horrific night The next day Moosha had finished birthing Exhausted and still upset Wendy took her to the vet to make sure she was not retaining any pups the vet found she was not and advised Wendy to keep an eye on her before letting her go back home Moosha recovered quite well I was the one having trouble getting over it Wendy recalls It seemed that the worst was over but the same night Moosha lost her pups something else happened Paperwork concerning several Paw Help UK Rescue dogs who had arrived from Ukraine was found to be lacking the rabies test results falsified and the dogs were taken away for quarantine On 26 March Elina Oliferuk founder of Paw Help UK Rescue stated Unfortunately this week while cooperating with an APHA investigation we realised with our last 19 dogs from the Ukraine we had been scammed when paying a recommended vet and lab to do the titre rabies test QUARANTINE NOTICE This means unfortunately those tests are invalid and all 19 dogs have had to be quarantined while the dogs have another test and maybe would need to be re vaccinated We can assure all our fosters and adopters this was the one and only time we used that vet and lab in December 2021 due to issues with our usual lab in Ukraine temporary lack of reagents All our dogs are fully vaccinated and we make sure they are fully compliant with the UK importation laws Unfortunately we are not even able to trace this case of fraud in Ukraine now as due to the war the vet clinic is closed and the worker responsible for those tests has been drafted in the army and not reachable We have reported to the police that we have been the victims of a scam The following week Wendy received a visit from Trading Standards Moosha was not taken to quarantine kennels but Wendy was handed a quarantine notice Two weeks after I got out of hospital Moosha was tested for brucellosis She was the only one in the van from Belarus to test positive I was then told my own dogs would need to be tested and three of them tested positive and they were all put to sleep I was told the dogs would need to be quarantined for 21 days I knew the issue was with the van from Ukraine and Moosha had come from Belarus on a different van so I was not concerned she recalls I thought there had been a simple mix up in paperwork when I got another 21 day quarantine notice I actually began to worry At that point my concern was rabies As it turned out Moosha did not have rabies nor did any of the seized dogs from the van that had come from Ukraine But all was not well Wendy says About a week after the second 21 day notice Moosha got poorly she had bloody diarrhoea and was really wobbly I was very worried for her but I couldn t take her outside my property and thus got in touch with my vet for a phone consultation He prescribed some antibiotics this was on Monday 9 May On 13 May I was told that Moosha and all the other dogs who had been in the same van from Belarus would immediately be taken to kennels in Berkshire to quarantine Wendy with the dogs the day she came out of hospital Brucellosis import tragedy W At this point Wendy still believed the main concern to be rabies Soon however she began feeling unwell herself She had chills fever headaches and backaches however she put them down to stress After all she was worried for Moosha and feared her own dogs may be taken to quarantine too she had plenty of reasons to be stressed DEVASTATING DIAGNOSIS Eventually however her worried family convinced her to visit her GP and from there she was immediately sent to the hospital My temperature had spiked to 41 degrees and the next day I was taken to the infectious disease ward Wendy recalls But they were not sure what it may be They were treating me for meningitis at the time and only the following Friday after they learned about Moosha did I get the diagnosis of brucellosis They were fairly sure I was the first case of dog to human transmission in the UK Canine brucellosis is a disease caused by the bacterium Brucella canis It typically causes reproductive issues such as infertility and abortions in infected dogs who may show few other signs of any illness However once a dog is infected it will remain infected there is no way of curing it It is not a disease endemic to the UK and it is usually only found in dogs who have arrived from abroad travelled outside the country or been in contact with another dog who has done either It is quite rare for brucellosis to spread from dogs to humans However one of the most likely transmission routes is through contact with the infected dog s blood or other fluids both of which Wendy got on herself as she helped Moosha through the loss of her litter Wendy wound up spending over two weeks in hospital for treatment and antibiotics she was very ill and terribly worried for her dogs As it is a notifiable disease it was taken over by public health she recalls I was getting phone calls October 2022 Dogs Today 11

WAKING NIGHTMARE Wendy was shocked to learn that Moosha was not tested for such an insidious disease prior to being imported and doubly shocked to realise that unlike with rabies the rescue had been under no obligation to do so testing imported dogs for brucellosis is not mandatory In its guidance Defra only refers to testing for the disease as advisable prior to import it also concedes that no test can determine infection status with 100 accuracy although some types of tests are considered more accurate than others Due to disease concerns and serious cases of non compliance the import of dogs cats and ferrets from Belarus Poland Romania or Ukraine has been banned since 14 April roughly three weeks after Wendy s ordeal with Moosha began As this goes to print the ban has been extended until 29 October 2022 The decision has caused outcry from rescues in these countries unable to send their rescue dogs to new homes in the UK Wendy however is scared of what may happen should imports be allowed again without strict testing requirements in place 12 Dogs Today October 2022 All the dogs asking who I had been in touch with who I had met all sorts of questions When I came out of the hospital I had nurses coming in twice a day to carry on with IV antibiotics for a few weeks afterwards I also had to take tablets Two weeks after I got out of hospital Moosha was tested for brucellosis She was the only one in the van from Belarus to test positive I was then told my own dogs would need to be tested and three of them two of my own plus a long term foster tested positive and they were all put to sleep It was the hardest thing I have ever done it broke my heart I miss them all so much Moosha was euthanased too I felt horrible All I wanted to do was help a dog have a better life I had done it before it went so horribly wrong this time I also unknowingly exposed the staff at the vet practice to the disease when I took Moosha there to check if she was retaining any pups it could have been a disaster It was the hardest thing I have ever done it broke my heart I miss them all so much I don t ever want anybody to go through what we have gone through it has been a nightmare I am also thinking of the dangers of the puppy trade as pups can carry it and then you put children and puppies together it s dangerous God forbid it should happen to a child I am very thankful no one else in my family caught this horrible disease Wendy says Dogs can go for years and not show any signs and still be shedding the bacteria So few people have even heard of this disease I can t understand why what happened is not being made public this was the first dog to human transmission documented in this country Monkeypox was on TV every night so why the complacency about brucellosis Paw Help UK Rescue say they are testing their dogs for brucellosis now but how reliable are those tests Testing should be both compulsory and reliable if we are to reopen the import of these dogs I think the only way to make it safe enough is to have the dogs tested as soon as they arrive in the UK with the most accurate tests possible I feel terrible for these dogs and I know there are amazing rescues doing amazing work but I am terrified someone else may go through what I went through The fact that paperwork can so easily be falsified too is terrifying I had no idea about all this I was very naive Now I am so worried how long until we have the first case of rabies in the UK The president of the British Veterinary Association BVA Justine Shotton has also called for mandatory testing While some charities do carry out some pre import health tests there s currently no requirement to test for diseases not commonly found in the UK she said We would ask all rescue charities to test dogs for Brucella canis and other exotic diseases of concern before importing them to the UK and to seek advice from a vet here to ensure compliance with import best practice We at the British Veterinary Association continue to call on the government to take urgent action to introduce stricter pet import measures including mandatory pre import testing for dogs coming into the UK so we can minimise the spread of such emerging diseases Natural Range SPECIALISED RECIPES FOR DIFFERENT NEEDS AND LIFE STAGES OF YOUR DOG FITTING TRIBUTE Now on the long road to recovery Wendy is still mourning the loss of her dogs and Moosha Moosha was a lovely dog and she was a victim in this as much as everyone else she even had a lovely home waiting for her once she left quarantine she says Max had also come over here to find a new home and life this was so preventable it should not have happened I am not against foreign dog rescues but there needs to be much better regulation I want people to have all the information they need to make informed decisions I am so very angry for what happened but this is not about retribution it is about getting the message out The only thing I can do now for Moosha Max and my own dogs is to bring awareness which I hope in time will bring about better regulations regarding foreign dog rescue better for the genuine charities the fosterers adopters and for the welfare of the dogs themselves That would be a fitting tribute to all my five muchloved dogs P 1 0 O F F C O D E D O G S TO DAY 2 2 10 discount code applies to all products Single We at the DCA totally agree with Defra that no dog should be allowed to sleep in or stay alone in a conservatory as they can of course get very hot in the summer and be cold in the winter However we feel that those conservatories that have heating and air conditioning could perhaps be counted as rooms when the councils are working out how many dogs a person can be licensed for Some councils will let you count kitchens and bathrooms as viable rooms as long as they have a window but not all And this is another problem it s a postcode lottery with different rules in different councils Some home boarders were forced to do ridiculous things to get their licence such as changing their doors so they opened the other way it is clear those rules were often written with kennels in mind not for home boarders COUNCIL FAILURES And some councils according to Tabatha don t make it easy for people to find their local licensed doggie daycares or boarders Councils are meant to display lists of licensed boarders on their websites but many do not In a stunning instance someone was told they would need to submit a Freedom of Information request in order to receive a list of local licensed carers and it can take up to 20 working days before getting a FOI response Tabatha adds People who don t bother to get their licence don t follow any of these rules and cram in their house as many dogs as they wish There is no enforcement and we found that a number of people had written to their councils to tell them about the issue only to be told that they don t have the time or manpower to do anything about it If this keeps up more and more experienced licensed boarders will close down only leaving unlicensed people with no experience or insurance putting animal welfare at risk We need enforcement and uniformity across all councils or else the situation is going to get worse and it s only a matter of time until something goes horribly wrong P y t t o P les about d o o P TRAGIC MISTAKE Alyson Lane founder of Poochee Care lost her beloved Labrador Molly after leaving her with an unlicensed dog boarder She has since become a home boarder herself and warns pet owners to make sure home boarders are licensed before leaving their dogs with them It all started in 2016 when I had to leave Molly with a dog boarder as I went on vacation Alyson recalls She was our baby we wanted the best for her and my dad was supposed to look after her But circumstances changed and we had to find somebody else to look after Molly for those few days instead Alyson found a boarder offering their services on Facebook and went to visit her home Everything looked fine and Alyson simply did not know what to look for what questions to ask Hindsight is a wonderful thing but at the time I did not know I should ask for a licence I took everything she said at face value I left Molly with her and left my own number as well as my dad s and my daughter s to call in case of emergency No call came while 18 Dogs Today October 2022 Alyson was away on holiday When she returned to pick up Molly the Lab was quiet and spent the day on her daughter s bed Alyson assumed she was just unsettled by the change in routine but after two days of Molly remaining quiet and sleeping for hours on end she knew something was wrong Alyson contacted the boarder who only then revealed Molly had been like that for five days before they picked her up not eating much if anything Alyson says I was very upset that I had not been told about Molly s state and she had not been taken to the vet Molly was finally taken to the emergency vet and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure passing away shortly afterwards Later Alyson realised that the boarder did not have the proper licence The condition may have already been there and I am not saying this would not have happened with a licensed boarder What I could not conceive was that the home boarderer hadn t taken her to the vet s or contacted me to let me know of Molly s condition Now a home boarder herself Alyson makes a point of only looking after one client s dog s at a time in her home and is always ready to take them to the vet s and contact their owners if anything is off She is however concerned that others like herself may not know they need to ensure the dog carer they choose is licensed I can understand people wanting to look after dogs they can have good intentions but every dog boarding establishment needs to be inspected by local authorities And then of course there are those who know they should have a licence but also know they can get away with it Or rather without it The licensing regulation needs to be enforced by the central government not just local authorities I contacted Defra every week over unlicensed home boarders but never got a reply The law is not enforced at all they simply don t have the manpower nor the resources My licensing fee is about 173 but I would be willing to pay 10 times as much if it meant unlicensed premises would be inspected and closed down It is not just a matter of fairness to licensed boarders although that is important too In the end it is most of all a matter of animal welfare Words photos CANNY HART Step 1 Relax Using a mat or familiar blanket and some high value treats place the mat on the floor and encourage your dog to come towards it In small steps guided by your dog s willingness to learn and ability to concentrate progress from one foot on the mat to two feet on the mat After two feet ask for all four feet then ask for sitting on the mat and finally lying down Lying down can be paired with the cue settle Once your dog has mastered settling on the mat in one position you can start to move the mat to other areas within the house Your ultimate goal is for your dog to feel totally relaxed while on the mat no matter where they are We want the mere presence and feel of the mat to induce automatic feelings of comfort and relaxation Relaxing is a great life skill for a dog to have but like many of us humans it doesn t always come naturally and so needs to be taught Training to a settle mat can be really beneficial in lots of situation such as when visiting friends or going out for coffee CAROLINE CANNY HART Coape qualified animal behaviourist founder and owner of recently established behavioural coaching business The Emotional Dog TED and co founder of Happy Tails Home Boarding Having previously spent time as a volunteer with Forever Hounds Trust Canny worked with equine behaviour at the Donkey Sanctuary While there she met and married her husband Ben Hart author and international equine behaviourist Canny has always had a great a passion for sighthounds and is dedicated to helping people better understand their needs and nature through dispelling myths and showing their value as family pets Canny s ambition is to be the go to sighthound behaviour specialist in the UK She wants to help pet parents understand the needs of rescued dogs to increase the chances that their first home will be their forever home www happytailscolyton co uk info happytailscolyton co uk 20 Dogs Today October 2022 Happy traveller Not all dogs enjoy car journeys but with the right help even the most reluctant of passengers can overcome their travel fears W hen we welcome a dog into our family there is often a hope that they will join us for some wonderful adventures from lazy Sunday afternoon walks in the countryside to summer camping trips but when our dog suffers from travel sickness it feels as if our idyllic dreams have been shattered We need dogs to be happy travellers not just so they can join us for the fun things in life but also because there will inevitably be necessary trips to the vet groomer training classes or boarding facility Inadvertently the first travel experiences for many puppies are often negative either a trip to the vet or being removed from their mother and littermates Early car journeys resulting in negative experiences particularly during the peak of sensitivity at six to eight weeks may create negative emotions and trigger a fear response which can cause anxiety towards future car journeys Motion sickness is common in young dogs due to their vestibular system being underdeveloped until the age of 12 months which is responsible for all motion and balance Mixed sensory signals to the brain can cause a stress response similar to that of eating something toxic causing the sympathetic nervous system to trigger the emptying of the stomach Puppies who have not received appropriate travel training or those who ve had early negative experiences such as initial journeys being too long excessively bumpy fast or erratic can develop a secondary fear association so even when the true motion sickness has been outgrown fear and anxiety around cars continues If you are the parent of a dog who struggles with travel anxiety explore these six steps Coape International s Karin Pienaar takes the baton from longtime contributor Peter Neville to present training and behaviour features on all aspects of living with dogs KARIN PIENAAR Coape International Partner DipCABT Coape OCN CertCAB CAPBT Practitioner ICAN Member CAB Karin has worked in animal behaviour therapy since 1997 After more than 20 years of consulting with dog and cat owners Karin now focuses mainly on managing Coape International www coape org presenting the Coape Diploma and mentoring students Karin is also responsible for course advancement and developed the industrychanging MHERA concept Her book MHERA Mood Matters will be available in both paperback and e book format from DogWise Publishers soon and is a must read for anyone working in the industry Karin is the behaviour consultant to numerous pet companies such as Eukanuba and Ascendis Animal Health and is a regular contributor to several local and international magazines as well as appearing on television and radio when time allows She is often a guest speaker at behaviour related events and conferences When she has time to spare she consults on particularly challenging cases and as an expert witness in legal cases involving animal behaviour October 2022 Dogs Today 21

Step 2 Cars can be fun Using their favourite toy or treat start the process of helping your dog to make a positive association with the car Take them out near the car and have some fun Play give them treats groom them do anything they particularly enjoy Play should be in close proximity of the car for only a few seconds before moving further away to avoid the dog feeling pressured Manage the dog s emotional reactions by not pushing them to feel scared while pairing the behaviour you want with positive rewards Step 3 Triggers for travel Even the sound of you picking up your car keys can cause a negative emotional response in a dog who is already fearful of travel The sound of the car being unlocked the click of a seat belt and other stimuli that proceed a car journey such as you getting into the driver seat closing the door putting on the seat belt or turning on the engine can all become triggers so it is necessary to carefully manage training sessions to help change these negative emotional responses to positive ones While playing around the car press the key fob to unlock the door Reward your dog with high value treats for being calm and relaxed Once you arrive at the point where you can take your dog to stand next to the car unlock and lock the car several times while checking that they remain relaxed Only then can you move on to the next step such as opening and closing the car door Step 4 No lifting It s important that your dog learns to get in and out of the car by themselves so they know they have a choice and can make their own decisions Feeling like they have an element of control over their own wellbeing will also increase their confidence None of us enjoy the feeling of being forced particularly when we are scared or nervous Give your dog plenty of verbal encouragement Build up slowly step by step 22 Dogs Today October 2022 towards the ultimate goal of happily jumping in one side of the car and out of the other Your previous training around relaxation will be really handy at this point because you can put the mat into the car wherever it is that you would like your dog to sit Recognise that jumping into the car is a massive step so as soon as your dog shows any signs of getting in make sure to give lots of verbal praise and a reward Once in let your dog decide when they are ready to get back out Step 5 Feeling trapped Confining any animal to a small space but most especially a fearful one can easily trigger their innate fight or flight response so closing the car doors needs to be taken slowly and carefully managed Place the settle mat in the boot of the car Ask your dog to jump in and settle Wait until they are nice and relaxed and then slowly reach up as if you are going to close the boot Reward your dog for staying settled Build on this so each time you reach up you close the boot a little more until you get to the point that you can close it completely After a few seconds open it ask your dog to jump out and give loads of praise You should also at this point use their favourite toy to reward them with a game for their bravery As with previous steps allow your dog to come away from the car in between sessions so that the pressure is released for a minute or so before repeating the step Slowly build up the amount of time that your dog is in the car with the doors shut Always make sure that the windows are open and that they have enough fresh air as this will help with nausea Allow your dog to spend time in the car under supervision to just relax and even maybe sleep if they feel that way inclined

Page 13

Step 6 Plan comes together Finally we can put all of the elements together and start to drive for just 30 seconds or so to start with Short car trips can be repeated several times a day allowing your dog time to relax and rebalance in between Monitor your dog closely to make sure they stay calm and relaxed If your dog shows any signs of distress and is starting to drool refuses to take a treat yawns or pants stop the car and take them out immediately because these are all signs of being in a state of high alert which is not conducive for learning Continue to gradually build up journey times Always make it fun and as you progress to longer journeys make sure you plan regular stops When you start the driving part of your programme be careful about using fatty or rich treats as this can make your dog feel ill Find out if praise verbal encouragement or lower value dry treats are acceptable to your dog instead Behaviour strategies Shaping Behaviour modification plans are all about tiny steps The technical term for this is successive approximation but basically it means shaping the behaviour We are gradually moulding the dog s behaviour to get the response we want You can imagine the steps like a flight of stairs taking us to our final goal Desensitisation Desensitisation means helping the dog to learn to cope with what s frightening them by introducing it at a low intensity and sufficiently far away so that it does not cause emotional distress in this case the car and pairing it with something positive such as a game with a favourite toy or high value treat Counter conditioning Counter conditioning means changing the dog s emotional response for example to the car from a negative one to a positive one It will take time and commitment to help your dog become a happy traveller Remember there are no quick fixes in the modification of a dog s behaviour but the training that you do together will improve your relationship forever in every area There are endless rewards in having a dog who is happy to travel making the time spent training always well worth the effort Every dog is an individual and every situation unique it is always advisable to enlist the help of a Coape qualified canine behaviourist to support you through a behaviour modification plan P SuperDog takes our 50 years of award winning nutritional expertise even further all the innovation and careful effective formulation you d expect from Vitabiotics now available for your special companion From vitality to healthy joints and bones SuperDog formulations provide optimum levels of micro nutrients to safeguard the diet of your furriest family member Joints Bones Health Vitality 60 Chewable Tablets 60 Chewable Tablets Proud supporter of Battersea caring for dogs and cats since 1860 Amazon Ocado Paws com and Vitabiotics com 24 Dogs Today October 2022 2022 07 07_ADSPDCONP From Nielsen GB ScanTrack Total Coverage Value Unit Retail Sales 52 w e 23 04 22 To verify contact Vitabiotics Ltd 1 Apsley Way London NW2 7HF Vitabiotics Ltd will donate 35p VAT from the sale of each SuperDog product to Battersea Dogs Home Limited which donates its profits to Battersea Dogs Cats Home registered charity number 206394 Stockists may vary June 2020 Dogs Today 11

Words DR JAMIE ARATHOON Caring for the carers Last month we looked at research in collaboration with Dog AID about what assistance dogs do for humans this month the focus switches to caring for assistance dogs D eveloped in 1965 by the UK government and formalised in 1979 by the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council the five freedoms and their associated provisions were devised to monitor the livestock sector but have now been expanded and adopted by the RSPCA ASPCA and the World Organisation for Animal Health These freedoms also made it into thinking around assistance dog welfare But there have been critiques of these freedoms such as the focus on negative experiences and states while not including positive experiences the use of the word freedom indicating that complete freedom from these states could be achieved and the fact they do not properly reflect the causes and consequences of stresses that lead to long term problems Animal welfare scientists Mellor and Beausoleil from the Institute of Veterinary Animal and Biomedical Sciences Massey University New Zealand thus developed the five domains which consider the above critiques These domains are in the table below adapted and in a more user friendly format These domains create a model for thriving rather than surviving and they also allow a greater individualised interpretation that can bring into focus animal sentience It is this individualisation that is necessary for welfare to become care THE FIVE DOMAINS ALIGNED TO ANIMAL WELFARE AIMS PROVISIONS ANIMAL WELFARE AIMS 1 Good nutrition provide ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour 1 Minimise thirst and hunger and enable eating to be a pleasurable experience 2 Good environment provide shade shelter or suitable housing good air quality and comfortable resting areas 2 Minimise discomfort and exposure and promote thermal physical and other comforts 3 Good health prevent or rapidly diagnose and treat disease and injury and foster good muscle tone posture and cardiorespiratory function 3 Minimise breathlessness nausea pain and other aversive experiences and promote the pleasures of robustness vigour strength and well coordinated physical activity 4 Appropriate behaviour provide sufficient space proper facilities congenial company and appropriately varied conditions 4 Minimise threats and unpleasant restrictions on behaviour and promote engagement in rewarding activities 5 Positive mental experiences provide safe congenial and species appropriate opportunities to have pleasurable experiences 5 Promote various forms of comfort pleasure interest confidence and a sense of control 26 Dogs Today October 2022

EVERYDAY CARE Associated with domain one everyday care includes the provision of food water and shelter and grooming and cleaning In my research participants providing food for their assistance dogs go beyond the basic idea of minimising hunger they provide nourishment and are driven by the dogs desires Interviewee Megan said of her dog Sam He is raw fed because he has allergies and raw food just seems to sit better with him We make our own treats dehydrated liver because of his allergies He has his daily carrots and sometimes twice daily but he absolutely loves those Raw food helps his skin Megan shows how food goes beyond sustenance Sam s health influences what food he needs but beyond this it s his desires and his love of certain foods such as carrots that also form his care Here food becomes an enjoyment which was expressed in our interview by Sam who would chase and play with his carrot PLAYING TOGETHER Play is another form of care and is linked to the fourth and fifth domains and their associated provisions Play was often described through naturalistic behaviour and participants giving their dogs time to be dogs but is shaped by the dog s own agency Describing her dog Luas About the author Dr Jamie Arathoon holds a PhD in human geography from the University of Glasgow Their PhD thesis was completed in collaboration with Dog AID Assistance in Disability a national charity that trains physically disabled people to train their pets to be their assistance dogs Jamie has presented at the Assistance Dogs International ADI Conference and is currently collaborating with Dog AID on its welfare guidelines Jamie is also part of a research team along with Dr Daniel Allen and Dr Helen Selby Fell who are exploring the social and emotional impacts of pet theft More of Jamie s work is available at www jamiearathoon com 28 Dogs Today October 2022 interviewee Erin said He s never been a huge player he always liked tug especially with Ted He loves pulling and pulling it me and him he will pull it around and shake it about lay on it and lick it He has never been into playing with a ball or anything like that but what I have done is found a ball that has a hole in it I would throw the ball with a bit of food in it He loves scenting things rather than me throwing a piece of food because he d find that easily When he was younger he used to have a football He would push it with his nose but he doesn t really do that now I did take it out and he s just not interested Through his sentience Luas shapes his own welfare in relation to mental stimulation and behavioural expression This relies on Erin to interpret his actions Welfare becomes care through these actions by moving from a human centred focus on welfare to interactions that Luas enjoys HEALTH CARE Medical care involves the third domain and provision Beth said Not only do I know every inch of my dog s body but I also know how she moves It is most important that she gets the best care I can give her I know when she is not well or unhappy and this is when the role of carer reverses Her welfare is the top of my list Beth s understanding of Daisy s health is through Daisy s own embodied actions This relies on Daisy to express herself and Beth to read these expressions This moves health welfare to health care While I have only used a limited number of examples it is clear that the relationship between assistance dog and human and assistance dog s expressions of agency and the human s understanding and reading of these actions are important in the care of the assistance dog This understanding of agency in the relationship moves welfare acts to be those of caring actions This is important in moving from a view that assistance dog partnerships are solely a benefit to humans to understanding how the relationship impacts the animals lives P 10 OFF WITH CODE UKDOG22 Immunity Range for pets Supports your cat s and dog s immune system Perfect to prepare for winter 100 herbs formulas

Words BERNARD BALE Photos Instagram sharonosbourne I would not have as many dogs or even one dog if I thought I would not be able to care for him or her properly and give the love and understanding that they need just as we do Pet jet set Sharon Osbourne knows a thing or to about talent which is why she has been one of the most popular panellists on X Factor and America s Got Talent She often raises eyebrows with her shoot from the hip comments and also when she flies backwards and forwards across the Atlantic because her dogs go with her I love my dogs they are part of our family said Sharon I take them everywhere with me and that includes on our trips backwards and forwards to the States It was suggested by one or two papers that I spend about 250 000 per year on their plane tickets That s not true of course but if I had to I probably would Many still think that Sharon Osbourne s career came from being married to husband Ozzy Osbourne but she was involved in show business long before she knew Ozzy existed She was born on 9 October 30 Dogs Today October 2022 1952 in south London and did not have a cosy childhood Her father was Don Arden well known in the music business as a manager and promoter Her mother was called Hope and there was an uneasy atmosphere at the family home SABBATH DAYS My father was not great I witnessed him threatening people including myself and did not grow up in a nice family environment she said I went into the music business myself and took over the management of Black Sabbath after they parted company from my dad There was a lot of trouble because I had started to date Ozzy and my dad sacked him from Black Sabbath That s how the band parted company with the Arden organisation and I just took over their bookings Despite everything I had learned a bit about the business from an early age HAWAII 4 7 I created Sharon Osbourne Management which was just me really and as well as running Black Sabbath we also took on Motorhead Gary Moore and a number of others So yes you could say I had a good grounding in the industry long before X Factor came along Sharon had learned quite a bit from her father despite their problems Later in his life they were reconciled but not for many years Sharon and Ozzy were married on 4 July 1982 in Maui Hawaii Independence Day has never been the same They have three children Aimee Kelly and Jack and they are still together 40 years later although there have been many ups and downs including a brief separation It s true we have had our moments said Sharon We have fought but really we love each other and that proved to be stronger than anything else We are good together One of the many things we share is our love of dogs We adore them and have loved every dog we have ever had which is quite a few really We rescue as many as we can and it is almost like adopting grandchildren That s what they mean to us We especially like Pomeranians Bella and Rocky are both Poms and they fly with me all the time they have their own pop up beds and are perfectly happy jetsetting I think they like the fuss they get from the crew and other passengers They have their own passports too Poms are great they are very beautiful have a great sense of fun but they are also very loyal and will defend you and yours no matter what they have to face Sharon and Ozzy s love for Poms seems to run in the family as their daughter Kelly also has two rescue Pomeranians a little black one named Sid and a caramel one named Story HOTEL FOR DOGS Sharon does not only have Poms though We have six dogs at the moment which includes Alfie a rescue dog who has so much character that he has appeared quite often on one of my talk shows in America she said The viewers love him and he has become something of a star Of course all dogs are stars but some flaunt it more than others Alfie is one of those The others are Charlie Flick and Moe They each have their own characters but they seem to get on well with each other all the time At home Alfie is just Alfie the other dogs never start asking him for pawtographs A few years ago the Osbournes had no fewer than 12 dogs and loved every one of them It was like running a hotel for dogs said Sharon It was great fun but I had to have a full time nanny to care for them I would not have as many dogs or even one dog if I thought I would not be able to care for him or her properly and give the love and understanding that they need just as we do We have quite a few cats too so there is always something going on at home We are both animal lovers and like having our dogs and cats around as much as possible We are not much into a glitzy social life We go where we have to go but our favourite time is just to be curled up on the sofa with the TV usually the news or old movies Oh and Downton of course I like to watch that over and over I think the dogs like it too it must be the Labrador at the start They always gather round to watch Sharon has gained a legion of fans on both sides of the Atlantic and she plans to keep on working for a little while yet but not forever I don t think I would want to go on working beyond 70 she said We are involved in a number of charities and that wouldn t stop but actually work will come to a halt if it goes the way I hope I would prefer to go out while I am still wanted and while there is plenty of time to enjoy having more time Ozzy has already stopped I didn t want him to still be doing gigs at 75 It seems a bit strange if you are the oldest person at the gig RETIREMENT PLANS That said Ozzy did make an exception recently to perform at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in his home city of Birmingham I want to go out with dignity said Sharon I have been working in this business since I was 15 and I don t want to overstay my welcome or lose my dignity We will have more time to be together more time to watch the news on TV and more time to spoil the grandchildren We will have even more time to spend with the dogs and I can see us in retirement going for walks with our pack of canine friends much more fun than going to garden centres I cannot imagine life without at least one dog in the family Maybe I am besotted which is why I give the dogs a lot of mentions on my website I am proud of them and they are just so special I never understand how people can just abandon a dog How can you look in those wonderful eyes and say I don t want you any more P October 2022 Dogs Today 31

Postbag Your news views Jayne May founder of Zoe s Journey UK talks about the accomplishment of raising over 250 000 for cancer research in dogs and about the amazing dog who started it all ZOE S JOURNEY It all started back in 2013 when my Golden Retriever Zoe was diagnosed with lymphoma I took her to the vet the same day I noticed her lymph nodes were swollen The diagnosis was stage 3B cell lymphoma which didn t leave much hope But guided by my vet who was prepared to fight for her as I was we started chemo immediately In eight days Zoe hit remission aged 12 No one could believe this but the chemo continued In 2014 Zoe was deemed cured of cancer I was humbled and in awe of my wonderful vet Steve Tasker of Watkins and Tasker Vet Group Zoe s programme was like no other It was not the standard protocol being used at that time nor I believe now I asked Steve how common is cancer in dogs and was taken aback when I learnt that a quarter of all dogs will be diagnosed and half of all dogs over the age of 10 I wanted to give back to thank the research that gave Zoe back her life It was the most worrying journey of my life Steve suggested I try the Animal Health Trust who had a dedicated Canine Cancer Research Unit 34 Dogs Today October 2022 I started a JustGiving page asking for people to donate directly to the AHT to help research I was asked by the AHT whether I had a target I stumbled and said Errr yes how about 5 000 in a year Little did I know what lay ahead The group grew and I decided to open another group not to raise money but to help and support folks who have been told their dog has cancer There are people out there with no kids no family and some with no friends these dogs are everything to them The group now enters its seventh year and I can announce that in July 2022 Zoe s Journey UK has raised a staggering 250 000 for cancer research in dogs We now have members from all over the world within both groups of Zoe s Journey UK As for Zoe herself back in March 2016 she did her own special interview with Clare Balding at Crufts for Channel 4 Zoe made it to almost 16 years old when she passed peacefully away in April 2016 from old age When Zoe died she was cancer free No one knows your dog as well as you do and if you see something that is not right please go to your vet Social media is not the place to ask for help it is your vet and do this as soon as possible Zoe had chemotherapy 24 hours after diagnosis Please do not give cancer time if you do it will probably kill them We have seen dogs as young as 12 weeks old with lymphoma so please don t wait Zoe s Journey UK is the biggest independent cancer fund that the AHT had ever seen Due to the AHT s closure all of Zoe s funding now goes to the University of Edinburgh where there is a dedicated team of scientists researching canine Get in touch We love to hear your news and views and see photos of your dogs Email editorial dogstodaymagazine co uk Write to us at Dogs Today The Old Print House 62 High Street Chobham Surrey GU24 8AA Join the debate Voice your opinions on news stories and other topics on our Dogs Today Magazine Facebook page or through our website www dogstoday magazine co uk cancer If you need help dealing with a blow like this when cancer strikes or want to donate items or funds to help please visit Zoe s Journey UK Support News and Events on Facebook Jayne May June 2020 Dogs Today 35

Posed by models Great Debate If you have an opinion on this subject that is not already covered here putting Great Debate in the subject line Please limit your response to Nate Langley It is a wonderful idea in theory but in practice it seems like a GDPR nightmare Especially since any dog can be registered to any of the 18 or is it 19 or 20 now microchip databases out there sometimes more than one at the same time It just cannot work And what of the fraudulent databases not approved by Defra that are not shut down and keep gathering data Should a dog s microchip database record have to state who bred them and when and be linked to their vet health record so that essential data such as important health events always follow the dog Lesley Hallows If you breed you re entirely responsible for the animals you have purposely brought into the world There should be a register that details animals date of birth breeder and breeder address All vets should register any pregnant pets breeder and health information The breeder should be responsible for the animals Should any end up in rescue the breeder should be offered to take the animal back or pay costs to the rescue Big problem unscrupulous breeders would take the animal back and either sell it on for profit or dispose of the body We cannot prevent hobby breeders or those breeding simply for profit with no interest in breed health or the type of home they are sold to Paul Watkinson Our already low level microchip system is undervalued and used we only need to look at the Fern s Law campaign to understand the flaws it carries But it could be a great opportunity to be a world leader as the system can be easily adapted to accommodate many avenues It just needs the powers to be to think outside the box Having a system whereby a breeding register could be compiled via an online page for breeding dogs against their microchip would be a massive win Our councils are already overstretched and having an online database would vastly reduce time But it does not come without flaws it could be a wonderful system but it would need policing and unarranged visits to breeders Those found to be breaking the law should have their licence suspended Anita Doyle Yes I think it is very important I have four adopted dogs and to know their health history in particular is very important The more you know the more you can help the dog Equally vets still need to check chip details to see if the dog is stolen This is not being done Having worked with vets some are scared of data protection thinking they could get into trouble and some can t be bothered 38 Dogs Today October 2022 email enquiries dogstodaymagazine co uk 100 words Tracey Burton Yes there definitely should be some form of traceability The microchipping system needs a complete overhaul Maybe dogs should have something like a passport It could contain the breeder s information details of the parents information on the puppy the microchip number first vet check and the details of the owner the breeder sold to This passport could be a legal document that must be presented whenever the dog sees a vet goes to kennels crosses borders and when getting insurance It would need to contain the details of anyone who had owned the dog Failure to adhere to this would have to be significant punishment Not sure anything will ever change though Barb Turnbull I don t think the vet histories would be allowed to be on the databases due to client confidentiality and GDPR but all breeders must chip their pups and be the first registered keeper on the record before the pups are sold at eight weeks old However the legislation is never enforced Ralph Gadsby Yes I suggested this when they were discussing introducing compulsory chipping Plus there should be a single chip registration authority Sadia Gilmore There should be one database Instant alerts should be automatically sent to all vets and other authorities Chip checking should be mandatory whenever a dog attends the vet s unless it is a known client Until there is a decent system in place there s no point in adding to the record This month s result Emma Judson Not sure While it seems like it s easy to attach the chip number to vet records the difficult part is making those vet records searchable by chip number by a third party You d need a system to upload all vet records which would add more time cost to veterinary services Given the abysmal handling of data on chips we currently have with dogs who are listed as stolen being converted to handed in by chip companies dogs details vanishing and people ignoring stolen or missing flags on a listing I would not trust them with access to the veterinary records of every dog in the UK It is a nice idea but in practice I think it would bump up the cost of chipping and of veterinary treatment to a point where it s unaffordable I think a better system would be that the chip data can never be removed so you would have a history of ownership and include which vet practices treated the animal associating chip number with vet records that way Then even if a previous owner cannot be contacted it is possible for a new owner to contact previous vets The vets could then charge an admin fee for passing on records to new owners new vet rescue This would then stop anyone being able to remove missing or stolen data just giving them the ability to update it to recovered 21 5 50 28 5 Yes No Maybe Louise Lindsey With the Petlog fiasco of information getting erased and users logging in to see other people s dogs details I absolutely would not trust the microchip companies to handle my dog s health info The current disgrace of a system would need to be fixed before even considering giving them more data to handle Jacqueline Baker Great idea in principle good breeders would do it However try getting it implemented in puppy farms some with 1 000 breeding bitches All these ideas are good but fail because there is no body to enforce them Jessica Gilmour Yes yes yes yes a million times yes Next month s topic is My dog has had loose motions for a few days and tried to be sick this morning but was unproductive She My Dog Crush Best names Traits Origins T he Bearded Collie is a herding dog with a long shaggy coat developed to offer protection in the Scottish hills and mountains where the breed worked It s thought that the forerunners of the Polish Lowland Sheepdog found themselves in Scotland over 500 years ago and were bred with native herding dogs There were probably two types of Beardie originally a smaller lighter boned herder from the Highlands and a heavier droving dog with a black coat from the Lowlands The modern Bearded Collie is a mix of the two Some working Beardies do still work sheep but most are pet dogs with hobbies Loyal Funny Loving Gentle Intelligent Bouncy Hairy Cooper Lochranza Gussie Barney Norman Barkus Merlin Clementine Fergus Elsie Matilda Tilly Muffin Sorrel Owner s view I t is easy to fall in love with a Bearded Collie on a dry sunny day says Beverley Cuddy My parents had an initiation test to put off flaky potential puppy buyers involving a muddy adult jumping through a downstairs window eager to greet strangers The coat is a lot Don t underestimate it Yes you can trim it off and we did with older dogs but upset tummies are just hideous Underneath all that hair are almost human eyes and beware if they look into yours even on muddy days your heart will be lost I ve had a few Beardies who were super smart they literally ran rings around us Some don t seem to come with an off switch and will want to tell you about everything Early training is essential and they are the sort of dog that would like to have hobbies It s only since owning other breeds that I ve realised how strong their herding instinct is there s a lot of natural ability there They thrive on company and if you re not careful you will be the one who frets if you are separated as they really are huge personalities There is no happier creature on the planet But it will break your heart if they are sad or ill And unfortunately what was once a robustly healthy breed now has a shadow of autoimmune issues Brave breeders do all they can to avoid it but there s no magic screening test My last Beardie lived with Addison s and the quality was good after diagnosis and drugs I m not ready to give up on them They are gentle souls and we must be brave and make their future better Get great pet insurance and be alert to the early signs Puppy buyers should put their breeders through an initiation test and ask them about the health of the breed We must be brave for our best friend the Beardie and keep them safe for future generations who may need a soulmate NO MORE PULLING NO MORE RIDING UP NO MORE RUBBING NO MORE COMING OFF NO MORE DISCOMFORT REVOLUTIONARY HEADCOLLAR 9 TIMES WINNER OF Product I can t live without Awarded Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 2021 UK For Dog People by Dog People Because your dog deserves the BEST Global 100 2020 WINNER Best Dog Collar Manufacturer 2020 UK Winners 2013 2022 Dogmatic UK Ltd is on Facebook Call to join the ever growing number of people changing to Dogmatic 01952 245330 or visit us at www dogmatic org uk 44 Dogs Today October 2022 October 2022 Dogs Today 45

Pembroke Corgi posed by a model Quick question Do you have a problem you d like answered by an expert Or do you Email your question to enquiries dogstodaymagazine co uk Do dogs really need to be walked every day We asked two experts EXPERT ADVICE Martina Miradoli That ll Do Academy www thatlldoacademy com D ogs don t need to be walked every day to be happy and healthy as long as owners can provide their dogs with mental and physical stimulation in other ways Dogs need a mix of walks play training and breed specific activities in order to be satisfied and you can schedule these different activities within your dogs routine throughout the week Walking your dogs in nature is important to allow off lead time to stretch their legs experience freedom sniff dig and engage in all the natural activities that dogs 48 Dogs Today October 2022 need to have in their life to satisfy their needs but it shouldn t be the only activity that your dog does Dogs like to have a varied life where they get to experience different activities There can be days where you take them for a swim in the local lake do some training in a class hire a field to practise training exercises in a controlled environment or just go and enjoy a lunch out in a nice cafe if your dog is social enough to go with you There may be some days where we humans feel the need to take a break from the world and you know what Dogs need that too Rest days are very important they allow dogs to recharge their social batteries and have a calm day to just chew sniff and perhaps lick some interactive toys at home These days can be beneficial for the dog s mental health and are even more important for dogs that suffer from anxiety and fear of things in the outside world If you live in an urban environment and your dogs bark at other dogs or people they may not benefit from being walked every day as that will increase their stress levels if you walk them every day multiple times a day they don t have enough time to calm down and reduce those stress levels before the next walk You still need to provide your dog with certain outlets of course such as toilet breaks and enrichment activities in the form of training that you can do in the comfort of your home I specialise in Border Collies and I always ask my clients to provide a detailed routine of their reactive want advice from someone with personal experience of the issue dogs and I always find myself having to cut down the amount of walks in a day or in the week in favour of enrichment activities that help dogs with behaviour problems to be calm but satisfied at the same time My go to activities for dogs that cannot be walked every day are trick training and scentwork If you can provide secure access to freedom by hiring a field or using a footpath that you know is going to be very quiet that is great but it doesn t have to be every single day for those dogs We own six dogs three working line Border Collies and three Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers and we don t walk all of them every day On certain days only some go out for a walk and the others go for a training session or a swim Some days we drive to a field that we hire and they have one or two training sessions each When we have time we go for a long hike somewhere or for a half day at the beach where they can get themselves tired and happy and usually the day after is a rest day I m also very careful not to create expectations in my dogs If they come to expect two or three regular walks a day and something happens that means I can t walk them I will have very restless and frustrated dogs It is important that your dogs know that it is not guaranteed that they will have their daily walks This is useful in emergencies for example if you catch a virus that will force you to isolate or be in bed for days If you can provide stress free safe and satisfying walks every day then do it of course it s a healthy activity for both you and your dog but don t feel guilty if you skip the odd day when life gets in the way as long as you are still providing your dog with some engaging activity EXPERT ADVICE Niki French Pup Talk www puptalk co uk W alking a dog every day is essential if you have a dog right Most of the time yes absolutely But there are instances where it might not be the right thing to do Are daily walks right for all dogs Most dogs love their walks Time outside the home is often the most interesting and stimulating part of our dog s day Physical and mental exercise is essential for all dogs and if your dog is confident and happy a walk or time in the park is one of the best ways to do this But if you have a dog that struggles in the outside world daily walks might actually make life harder for your dog and for you Constantly exposing a dog to situations where they feel nervous or anxious and get reactive is not a good idea For example if your dog feels the need to bark and lunge at dogs or strangers and they do this on 50 or more of your walks they are getting more practised at this behaviour They are reacting because of how the situation is making them feel WHY ARE DAILY WALKS SO BENEFICIAL Physical exercise keeps a dog s body fit strong and supple It also helps to maintain a lean and healthy weight Opportunities for sniffing and exploring generally mean calmer happier dogs the rest of the time at home Dogs that don t get enough physical and mental exercise and enrichment can become more destructive around the home and garden They have needs that are not being met so they have to do something else Regular walks boost your relationship with your dog They have a good time and it s associated with you Being with your dog preferably in nature can decrease your stress and lower your blood pressure as well as keeping you active every day The aim is a calm and gently tired dog after a walk not an exhausted overtired one Note repetitive ball throwing can raise levels of adrenaline and actually make some dogs more hyperactive at home Plus it is not recommended due to increased wear and tear on their joints potential arthritis and risk of injuries WHY WOULDN T YOU WALK YOUR DOG Although the sights sounds and smells in the outside world are wonderful for most dogs there are times when it might not be the best thing to do The most obvious one is when it s too hot to walk them safely Have a range of games and activities to do at home indoors or in the shade Dogs with flat faces brachycephalic black fur thick coats elderly and bigger breeds are even more at risk of heatstroke It can come on suddenly and can be fatal Please don t take the risk There are other weather extremes snow and ice or even if your dog hates the rain Some dogs really struggle in the outside world They might bark and lunge at something or cowering and flattening to the floor This is most likely coming from worry or fear even if they look aggressive and regularly exposing them to scary things tends to make it worse It s not October 2022 Dogs Today 49

Quick question just a case of Oh they ll get used to it What if you re physically unable to walk your dog as much as normal and you re struggling to get help Having some activities you can do with your dog at home can be so helpful If you have a bitch in season replacing walks with some activities at home is a great idea too She might be feeling anxious or amorous due to hormones Either way even on lead walks can be more of a challenge Even dogs that are very over excitable can benefit from fewer walks rather than more Playing training games at home that involve their brain and their nose and focusing on you can help them grow the skills they need to not get so excited when they do go out WALK ALTERNATIVES What can you do if daily walks aren t possible or beneficial There are so many fun activities and training games that you can play at home with your dog Make a treasure trail by hiding treats or a toy Start simple and help them find it You can increase the difficulty as they get better at the game Make a homemade snuffle mat by scattering some of your dog s food on an old towel and scrunch it up so that the food nestles in the folds Release your dog to the towel to forage for their breakfast or dinner Working on basics like the sit down and stand Mix up the order of the cues dogs often predict what they think we want or they want to do instead of listening to verbal or visual cues If that s too easy add in other tricks like left and right spins These are all great for a full body workout without chasing around Get help from an experienced dog trainer or behaviourist for more ideas that are right for your dog P 50 Dogs Today October 2022 chicken wire or slabs over the top before completely backfilling the grave I ve also seen people create underground mausoleums tombs for their pets using wooden planks or slabs both underneath and around the body as well as slabs on top I d suggest partially back filling before placing the slabs on top so there is no void underneath them Pet burials what you should know EXPERT ADVICE Kevin Spurgeon Dignity Pet Crematorium www dignitypetcrem co uk What should I bury them in Pet exhumations I have been exhuming or uplifting pets now for at least 15 years I started after a close relative asked me to help exhume her cat as she was moving home and didn t want to leave him behind I carried out some research on what to do before successfully uplifting him Within a week her friend contacted me to help her and the rest as they say is history Our society moves home more than ever before and most people have an exhumation because they are relocating However other common reasons include planned building works that will disturb the grave site or they ve buried their pet in a communal area and have been asked to uplift it Sometimes they ve never felt at peace with their pet s remains being in their garden since they made the decision to bury them I ve exhumed pets after they ve only been buried a few days up to them having been in the ground for decades There are two common themes when people contact me the initial embarrassment of the person asking for my help they often ask Am I weird for wanting to do this and Does anyone else do this followed by their immense sense of relief once their pet s remains have been uplifted Over the years I ve exhumed many different pets from hamsters up to St Bernards and so have seen lots of different burial techniques Some are better than others Coupled with a few rules that you have to be aware of when Location location location The most common mistake people make is to choose a spot near the house or in a flower bed that is likely to be disturbed at some point by them or any future owners Burying away from the house in an area that is unlikely to be built over means that you can move home and leave their remains in situ if that s what you d prefer to do If you do choose to leave your pet s remains in the garden then please let the incoming owners know and leave your contact details in case they plan to dig down over the grave site guidance animal burials preventgroundwater pollution For larger pets such as horses or if you want to start a pet cemetery then minimum goodpractice groundwater protection requirements do apply These include ensuring the burial site is outside of a source protection zone 1 at least 250 metres away from any well borehole or spring supplying water for human consumption or used in food production at least 30 metres from any spring or watercourse not used for human consumption 50 metres for horse burials and at least 10 metres away from any field drain including dry ditches There are also rules prohibiting burials in unaltered or unweathered bedrock or areas of groundwater flooding The rules On the gov uk website the Environment Agency advises that for domestic pets such as a dog or a cat you do not need permission to bury them on your own land It also says there are no minimum good practice groundwater protection requirements which you can read on www gov uk Digging the grave I have seen pets buried anywhere from two to six inches from the surface up to over six feet deep Of course the soil type of the ground often has a big impact on how deep you bury your loved one If you have a large dog and your soil type is clay then you may want to hire a mini digger as it will be burying a pet in your garden I ve put together some dos and don ts that I hope will help you or at least satisfy your curiosity very hard going Equally lots of thick roots may prevent you going any deeper or mean you choose a different spot in the garden My advice is to choose an open area and stay away from any large trees A good spade and shovel will make life easier but if the ground is hard then you may want to invest in a pick mattock a pick on one side and a flat blade on the other called an adze Just watch out for any underground cables or pipes Ideally the depth of your grave should be around four feet from the surface of the ground this means your pet will actually be about three feet from the surface In heavier soils around three feet deep means at least two feet of soil above your pet Most pets that I have exhumed have been buried around two to three feet down but I ve had several who I ve eventually found around six feet underground Protecting the grave When burying closer to the surface I recommend people protect the grave site from being disturbed by other animals There are a variety of ways to do this including partially backfilling the grave then laying You may be tempted to bury your pet in a coffin If you don t want to buy one and fancy making your own then please don t make the mistake of using plywood I have had to deal with several waterlogged coffins over the years all of which were home made They just don t break down very well resulting in water going in but not out again If you use something like a veneered chipboard over time water will soak into the wood causing it to destabilise and eventually break down allowing nature to take its course with your pet s body Wrapping them in a towel or blanket is a great option If you use a manmade fibre like a fleece blanket then it won t break down in the ground meaning the skeletal remains will still be inside if you do need to uplift them at a future date much easier than trying to find them when they are loose in the soil Whatever you do don t bury them in a plastic bag or crate this creates a barrier to nature taking its course and I have found completely intact pets within plastic bags after 10 years in the ground Remember plastic bags can take anywhere from 20 to 500 years to decompose depending on the material and structure Ancient Egyptian burial Ancient Egyptians used to place beautiful jewellery clothes perfume and food among other things subject to how rich they were Placing their collar toys treats photographs letters flowers or any other meaningful items with your pet is a lovely way to October 2022 Dogs Today 51

give them a special send off I ve found many toys still lying with the body years after burial Marking the grave However much you think you will know where your pet is buried in years to come the truth is that unless you mark the spot you will not be sure The aesthetics of your garden will change over time potentially leading to you trenching across your garden looking for your pet if you choose to uplift them at a later date I ve seen a variety of homemade plots including different headstones ornaments and plants that mark the exact location where pets are buried I have also seen kerb edged graves which mean that you can be in no doubt as to where they are If you think you may want to take them with you mark the spot How long will it take for them to disappear Pets buried one to three years ago will still be in tact in one form or another Pets buried longer than this will more likely be skeletal But this timeline depends on many factors Were they buried in a coffin How deep were they buried and in what soil The deeper the grave the slower the decomposition as there is less oxygen and less opportunity for microbes to do their work So if you want to know that your pet is returning to their skeletal form sooner rather than later I d suggest not wrapping them in anything and burying closer to the surface in a warm well aerated alkaline soil adding lime to the soil mix will help And remember larger dogs will take a lot longer to decompose than small ones Soil that is hot and dry will cause mummification that may prevent the bugs helping in decomposition from accessing their remains I ve seen mummified dogs in sealed dry coffins on several occasions Unless you create the right environment for 52 Dogs Today October 2022 mummification to take place it isn t something we have to be worried about in the UK The missing remains Before I started exhuming pets I thought there would always be skeletal remains left in the ground It turns out I was wrong Without getting too into the science behind it through a combination of the right soil pH temperature and water movement bones can dissolve I have only seen this on a couple of occasions with pets buried many years ago but it can happen If you have heard of a water based alternative to cremation called alkaline hydrolysis then effectively it is this process that takes place over several years without a place to bury their dog cat or gerbil could choose one of the pet cemeteries that are scattered across the UK If you choose this option make sure you read and understand the terms of the burial contract as this will determine whether the plot is guaranteed for only a limited time or for time immemorial It will also explain visiting rights and memorial maintenance too I ve seen several pet cemeteries closed and sold to developers with heartbreaking stories of families having to uplift their pets before the diggers arrive It is also worth bearing in mind that in some circumstances your vet may say that you cannot bury your pet and they will have to be cremated For example after a full post mortem the body must go to an approved pet crematorium and can t be released to owners With many established pet crematoria having been stealthily bought up by corporate vets if you go down the cremation route either after death or after exhumation then members of the APPCC Association of Private Pet Cemeteries Crematoria are independently inspected and have to adhere to a strict code of practice ensuring a genuine individual cremation that complies with consumer protection regulations You can find your nearest member at www appcc org uk Don t be rushed Burial or cremation The vast majority of people who have exhumations opt for the remains to be cremated afterwards however some people choose to re bury in their new garden I suggest placing remains into airtight plastic containers until the new grave is ready for them For some cremation simply isn t an option because of fear of the process itself or lack of trust that they will get their own pet s ashes back afterwards Those Whatever you choose to do the most important advice I can give is to plan ahead No matter how much you don t want to think of your much loved pet dying think about what send off you d like do your research and don t be afraid to choose a different service than the one your vet offers you Even after a pet s death most vets will store the body for at least a week while you decide what s best for you so use that time and don t be rushed into making a decision you ll regret P Yorkshire Terrier posed by a model Quick question Quick question What tools are essential when living with an incontinent dog READERS ADVISE Gill Hamilton Try Jacob s Wet Dog Mats designed for this purpose They re brilliant Jeannie Gee If it s only when she s asleep then the reusable washable nappies are good It s best not to use them 24 7 as their bits need to air or you ll get an infection You can also get washable pet pads which are fabulous I bought mine online Amazon has quite a few Ben Warden Vet bed is super good but when you put it in the washing machine put it in a pillowcase and tie the end up with a bobble or it will mess up your washing machine Teabag bedding soaks it up really well but you d need a crate or something to keep it contained It does go everywhere so a little less ideal but a cheap throwaway option Dominique Badman The Wet Dog Mat is designed specifically for dogs with urine incontinence Eileen Jones Jacob s Den Wet Dog Mats were a total sanity saver for me Myfanwy an Old English Sheepdog with urinary incontinence was with me as a long term foster for many years Keeping her dry and comfortable was essential She could not wear nappies so the Wet Dog Mats were essential They lasted for years Sadly I lost Miss Pissy Pants on New Year s Day this year but having the mats made things manageable Emma Judson Vetbed over puppy pads I also love my George Barclay beds the inner is waterproof and the outer is tough hard wearing yet soft and washes extremely well When fresh out of the washer mine look like new even though I have had them years and my dogs typically trash beds digging cocking legs on them etc For cleaning up I use Koh and their floor mop for hard surfaces and Odour Kill for anywhere smells may linger you can pop a bit straight into the drum for washing too Nicki Bloomfield I use the washable reusable belly bands and pads from Glenndarcy They are an absolute lifesaver I can t recommend these highly enough Kathryn Knock A friend of mine had an elderly incontinent dog and swore by Dettol s laundry sanitiser for washing his bedding Steph Lonsdale When Esme turned 12 she started having accidents We bought a Vax carpet cleaner but it didn t get the pee out of the underlay In the end we forked out for a Karndean floor which cost us way too much but was moppable and is still going strong 10 years later Sadly we only had Esme for another three years but the floor has still saved the day so many times such as when the cat decided to projectile vomit off the top of the cat tree Not a cheap quickfix option but if you are thinking about replacing a carpet it s worth considering October 2022 Dogs Today 53

Quick question Liz Hennel My male dog is on diuretics and often cannot hold himself I am using Glenndarcy belly bands but I also have a couple of washable incontinence pads from a human supplier for the bed Regarding cleaning I use a regular mop first then a steam mop with a few drops of lavender oil on the mop head That usually gets rid of any smell Otherwise an old standby is vinegar and sodium bicarb it foams ridiculously but deodorises and wipes up easily Helen Turier I used the Keafols Washable Incontinence Bed Sally Smith I used nappies from Pets at Home They were great through the night and Holly slept fine with them on I also use washable material puppy pads from Amazon Rita Lankester Danish design beds are soft and waterproof Jane Godfrey You can get waterproof quilts as well Julie Mills Dorwest does a green relief herbal mixture which helps support the bladder function Ris VanFleet I completely cover the floor of the area the dog is in with either child playpen pads or fabric puppy pads cotton on the outside with a plastic liner in the middle I then launder them whenever there s a wee They come in different sizes so usually I have several to cover the area needed but they still fit easily into the washer Margaret Sierakowski We use yoga mats with a waterproof covering under the dog bedding to stop urine seeping through on to the floor and large size puppy training mats on top of bedding to soak up urine The most effective disinfectant for killing smells is Zoflora Natasha J Bruce Carline There is a product called UrineOff which works very well But good old bicarbonate white vinegar and lemon juice will get rid of most whiffs and are much cheaper Lemon can bleach fabrics so be cautious A good antibacterial product is needed for washing things so they don t smell or simply soak in a lidded bucket of the bicarbonate vinegar mix for 24 hours before rinsing Vera Marney Use incontinence sheets for humans Claire Louise We are on our third old Pug Our last two slept in our bed so we used kids waterproof sheets and blankets There are loads of products on the market now to help I think we have tried most and it s not cheap The best idea is to give into it don t stress throw down lino and chuck out all your rugs and nice stuff Use Dettol clothes cleanser in the wash and give a new clean blanket each day Kids wet wipes are useful for keeping the rear end clean with weekly fortnightly baths We also have those rubberbacked door mats to help her walk on slippery floors we hose them weekly and brush like mad Sophie Agrell Shower curtains under the vet bed Very cheap and easily washed Helene Pettitt I did this video for my disabled dogs https youtu be TEKciZGcCJA I use a natural disinfectant called On Guard Cleaner Concentrate it is one I now sell as it is so safe that if ingested you just give water to drink no other disinfectant cleaner is like that Some of the stronger disinfectants are irritant to the skin and respiratory tract Michelle Allen I used human incontinence pads they are fully washable and you can use them under a vet bed Smell wise I use a solution called Sweet Pea which works really well Lisa Park One of my dogs became a little incontinent after neutering She struggled to hold especially when first waking up in the morning I started her on a CSJ herbal mix called Hold It and it worked well for her P A complete solution for urinary health Glucosamine Protective activity Cranberry pulp Anti adhesive activity against external agents Melon and Green tea Anti oxidant activity NEW 3 actions 1 complete solution For the natural support and well being of the lower urinary tract of dogs and cats For more information and to view our full companion animal range visit www vetark co uk products dogs cats CystArk is a complementary feed for dogs and cats www vetark co uk T 4401962844316 E info vetark co uk Available in palatable tablets or powder form GB 130E 0283 Vetark advert A4 indd 1 54 Dogs Today October 2022 24 06 2022 11 24
