Dear readers Beverley Cuddy A ccording to our feature on page 6 dogs love lockdown But here s something that would make even the smiliest dogs grumpy I don t like to say I told you so but I told you so Back in 2013 I appeared on BBC Radio 4 s Today programme on the morning the government announced that chipping was going to be made compulsory Clarissa Baldwin chief executive of Dogs Trust said the scheme would make a huge difference She said We could get those dogs back to their worried owners if they have a microchip and are identifiable With a register kept up to date people will be able to get their dogs back far more easily I said that the scheme was flawed as owners already did not keep their information up to date I said that day The National Dog Warden Association says 40 per cent of the dogs they pick up that are chipped have got incomplete or inaccurate records on the database meaning they can t be returned I also said People don t know how to update their records The chip is invisible once it s in there people forget about it Seven years later we re about to chip cats and it s still a broken system THROUGH THE CRACKS There are now 14 official registers How are owners meant to remember which one their breeder used as the years go by Wouldn t it be great if your vet could help you keep up to date When you have your annual health MOT couldn t the receptionist check the database and make sure the address and phone number are still correct Who would lobby against making checking the chip routine The Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance was shocked to discover that PetLog owned by the KC the people who probably make the most money out of chip registrations don t want chips to be regularly scanned Would too many extra people phoning up eat into profit margins Well that s not what it says Beverley Cuddy is Dogs Today s Editor and publisher She shares her life with Betty an Old English Golden Retriever ish dog from Many Tears She grew and grew and grew soon after this photo was taken 4 Dogs Today November 2020 in their report Their reasoning is that people with stolen pets would be less likely to go to the vet if they knew the dog s chip would be scanned They are supporting a call to scan some dogs brought in for euthanasia Read it for yourself at http bit ly KCPETLOGchippolicy They also seem to think Harvey s Law never happened as they are supporting a canine version of Gizmo s Law so that deceased pets are scanned before being disposed of CHIPPING IN Here is the wording of the latest petition to make chips make sense There are two major flaws with the current compulsory microchipping system optional scanning and the lack of a single database There are 13 microchip databases on the government list 14 since the petition started independent commercial enterprises different processes with no interest in creating a central standardised register To confuse matters further microchipping databases that do not meet government standards continue to trade and often rank highly on search engines If you register on an unlisted database not only can you be fined 500 but your pet s microchip will read as unregistered when scanned The government should introduce a single database of microchipped cats and dogs and make it compulsory for chips to be checked at the first veterinary appointment Please get behind this petition before cats get dragged into this mess too https petition parliament uk petitions 551556

Words BEVERLEY CUDDY Smile What did we all need in 2020 Dogs to cheer us up The six SmartBones Smiliest Dogs in Britain as voted by the public We asked who was the best lockdown companion Unsurprisingly the dog was number one Cats got very very few votes even fewer than kids and partners The comments were enlightening Eight dogs and just me Perfect The dogs are my family Without him I honestly don t know if I would still be alive It would be easy to feel depressed without the unconditional love of my dogs And who sparked the most joy when you treated them Yes overwhelmingly dogs Many more times rewarding than treating yourself or your partner 96 get treats 72 get daily treats But 86 would like more treats Locked down but looking up S martBones the intelligent alternative to rawhide sponsored a massive competition with amazing prizes The top 20 received 56 000 votes between them People loved gazing into the joyous smiley faces even though some of their stories will make you cry Dogs are just so stoical they teach us to live life to the full no matter what challenges we may face Were dogs especially so smiley in 2020 because they loved having us around more Certainly they made us smile plenty SmartBones and Dogs Today decided to conduct a survey to find out what exactly was making everyone s tails wag 6 Dogs Today November 2020 First we asked how are dogs and their owners feeling The results were surprising Nearly 50 reported they were happy but that they always were 2 were not keen on masks 7 said their dogs had become more demanding possibly due to everyone in the house worshiping them More than 40 reported they were happier in lockdown than ever before More than 10 said they were both very much happier than before Now I suspect if we asked nondog owners the same question the results would be very different Nearly half of those surveyed admitted they had a special treat ritual We give Scooby a chew every night and say to him Do you want your 9 o clock He then runs into the kitchen to sit next to the treat cupboard My dog has a treat after his asthma inhaler at night He then comes outside with the other two for the loo Then it s kisses all round and treats before bed After dinner every night we have a cup of tea and at the same time the dogs get their teeth cleaning chews They anticipate this every night They also get a treat when the post arrives Top five reasons for giving dogs treats 1 It s my treat too I like to see how happy it makes them 2 It s a small kindness that my dog really appreciates 3 They appreciate it more than the two legged family members 4 It s a regular highlight of the day for both of us 5 It s a guilty pleasure but there are many worse But many of the treats that smart dogs choose to chew are guiltfree The top five criteria for choosing a chew are 1 Must be healthy 2 Not rawhide 3 May help clean the dog s teeth 4 Tasty and long lasting 5 Not too fattening We discovered a guilty secret the vast majority of pet owners don t brush their dog s teeth And the reasons given were 1 Don t get time even in lockdown 2 Dog won t let me 3 Prefer to do things the dog enjoys 4 Dog sulks afterwards 92 of those surveyed give their dogs treats that have teeth cleaning properties Dogs seem very good at letting their owners know what they don t like Their top five dislikes were 1 Someone accidentally treading on their paw 2 Teeth cleaning 3 The vacuum cleaner 4 Having a bath 5 Going to the vet The first lockdown had some pretty huge downsides for dogs 1 Pet theft increased 2 People impulse purchased pups and the prices went sky high 3 It was more difficult to access routine vet care 4 Grooming appointments were cancelled for a while 5 Initially there was panic buying of dog food and treats But the positives were massive 1 Both felt less lonely 2 Dogs kept owners sane 3 Both preferred it being together 24 7 4 Exercise was more fun than for those with no dog 5 We had more treats Survey sponsored by WINNER Paddy Tony Corrigan from Leeds said his 12 yearold Golden Retriever Paddy makes him smile every day Paddy had a stroke last year and I had to feed him with a syringe The vets said he would never be able in eat or drink without help again but Paddy proved them wrong He can t walk far as he has arthritis and he nearly lost his eye this year too but he keeps smiling A lot of people tell me how much they look forward to seeing Paddy on social media every day There are a lot of lonely people I was amazed how many people voted for him SECOND Banjo Gem May from Manchester was one of the first to congratulate Tony and Paddy Her dog Banjo was a gallant runner up She told us Banjo is a truly happy boy He smiles lots especially when he knows he s about to have treats when he s going to the private field or when his friends visit Unfortunately the public don t get to see Banjo s smile because he must wear a muzzle in public due to breed specific laws Banjo is around six years old I adopted him from a dog rescue when he was a puppy Banjo makes me smile every day with his antics he is such a clown He also makes a lot of people from around the world smile with his big grin He really does have a way of cheering people up He is definitely looking forward to his SmartBones he especially loves the peanut butter flavoured ones THIRD Poppy This seven year old Bearded Collie is owned by Lisa Brownson from Altrincham Cheshire Poppy is the funniest and quirkiest dog I ve ever known She makes me smile every day even though she has been through a tough time She was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia at six months old She has had surgery on one hip and now has degenerative bone disease but she is still such a happy dog and lives life to the full As she can t walk too far she has a stroller and we have some lovely trips out Poppy has many different smiles she has won the hearts of many and has quite a following in the Beardie world and in my local neighbourhood I have many videos of Poppy greeting people when they come to visit she really does smile Everything makes Poppy smile she just has to see someone and she s off with her smiley Words COLETTE KASE Photos MAYA PAPOVIC Saving dogs one surgery at a time S ince 2015 there has been a very popular reality TV series on Animal Planet called Dr Jeff Rocky Mountain Vet I m definitely a fan of the show Dr Jeffery Young is my sort of antihero Considered a maverick by many of his peers his clinic Planned Pethood based in Colorado USA has been providing low cost veterinary care and sterilisation since 1976 when he started working out of his garage He now runs it as a non profit with his wife Dr Petra Mickova also a hugely talented vet So when I moved to Merida Mexico and talked about the work he was doing in Merida and the school Planned Pethood International Training Centre he d 14 Dogs Today November 2020 established in Puerto Morelos a town a few hours away providing specialist training to vets from around the world on early sterilisation techniques for cats and dogs It was easy to see why he d been pegged for reality TV stardom His passion for animal welfare vibrated from within and his unapologetic stance on reducing pet overpopulation through sterilisation and education was electrifying CULTURE SHOCK I had planned to do a feature on Dr Jeff but I soon realised that his role as a TV personality had nothing to do with his desire to be on television Quite the contrary He came across as a bit reluctant to take the spotlight and insisted on shifting that towards those who are doing the work here in Mexico He took me to visit the Planned Pethood Mexico clinic which of his teachers to see Dr Jeff who was a visiting lecturer talking about early neutering Their friendship and bond were immediate and together they worked to make their common goals a reality when 13 years ago they founded Planned Pethood Clinic in Merida Since then it has for this article took a turn because Dr Jeff was absolutely correct I have spent the last 15 years living in Belize which is in Central America and Mexico My life as an animal professional in the UK had not prepared me for the learning curve that I would experience once I left the safety net of living in a wealthy country that had made great advances in animal welfare legislation Quite honestly I had considered myself open minded and culturally sensitive That was until the first time I said to someone working with animals in Belize Well in the UK that wouldn t be allowed to be responded to patiently with You re not in the UK now That was my aha moment I was mortified by my sudden awareness of how condescending I must have sounded No excuses but when I was confronted with something to do with dogs that was so outside of my own comfort zone it just sort of slipped out Thank goodness for the kindness of the person who corrected me and from that point on my mission was to listen and learn because that was the only way I was going to be able to support those working in animal welfare locally If I wanted to really help animals I had to step back and allow myself to be educated Two very important things that I learned were kind of ironic really Firstly who would have guessed it but well intentioned foreigners trying to impose their culture in another country are not appreciated Secondly if an animal welfare organisation is going to be truly effective it has to be grassroots initiated and run by local people Dr Tony was still a veterinary student when he was invited by one that street they made sure that Estrallita s female companion was spayed They started spaying and neutering street dogs and through that work began helping other communities to tackle local pet overpopulation problems Esterilizado Patitos developed a system that depended on community participation Once an area that was in need of their assistance was identified they would help the residents to form a committee which was given the responsibility to engage and educate the community about the benefits of having a sterilisation clinic They would then help them prepare and present a formal request to the local government for assistance with funds and a suitable location to hold the clinic If the local government was unenthusiastic about the clinic the committee was encouraged to gather signatures locally and present those to show community support It s this principle of getting people directly involved in the planning that makes their programme so successful LEAVING A MARK Since their first clinic in 2018 working exclusively with Planned Pethood who provide all the clinical support vets medication and equipment these women have successfully held six sterilisation clinics neutering over 600 animals Most of these animals do have owners who unfortunately do not have the financial resources to go to a private vet Some are street dogs and cats brought in by kind people The important thing is that all of them would have had puppies or kittens that ended up on the streets and when dealing with small communities in this way the impact of one of these clinics is significant wooded area This condition also called canine seasonal disease is fast acting and potentially fatal with symptoms often becoming severe within a matter of hours Seasonal canine illness is life threatening Untreated it can quickly lead to dehydration and death You should contact your vet straight away if your dog or puppy shows signs of this illness particularly if it s within three days of them roaming in woodland Symptoms of SCI The main symptom of canine seasonal disease is vomiting although this is often accompanied with diarrhoea and lethargy Dogs with SCI may also show signs of abdominal pain fever and muscular tremors Bear in mind that these are also typical symptoms of gastrointestinal upsets and other conditions so don t be misled into thinking your dog has simply eaten something unpleasant Vomiting Diarrhoea Lethargy Abdominal pain Fever Muscular tremors 28 Dogs Today November 2020 of areas covered What is the cause The cause of SCI in dogs has been the subject of vigorous debate and research but it remains unknown Theories have ranged from allergic reactions to mushrooms algae or agricultural chemicals to infections from harvest mites The mushroom theory has now been discounted although there are still concerns over harvest mites The reason for this is that many of the dogs struck down by SCI have been infested with the tiny insects How is SCI diagnosed It can be difficult for vets to make a definitive diagnosis of SCI This is partly because so little is known about the condition and partly because the symptoms of the disease are so similar to many other conditions affecting dogs If your dog is hospitalised they may be given intravenous fluid therapy placed on a drip and prescribed anti sickness medicine and in rare cases antimicrobials It s likely your vet will also take steps to rule out other causes This may involve carrying out tests including radiographs ultrasound haematology and biochemistry blood tests and urine and or faecal tests If harvest mites are present then your vet may also prescribe treatment to eliminate them How to prevent SCI Because the underlying cause of SCI remains unknown prevention advice is limited to being vigilant and using a lead during woodland walks keeping your dog well hydrated closely monitoring for mites and raising awareness of SCI by telling others about the disease SCI survival rate According to the Animal Health Trust which has led the way in research into SCI the prognosis is good for dogs treated early and appropriately In 2010 when SCI was first reported 20 per cent of the cases recorded died Two years later fewer than 2 per cent died Most dogs given intensive veterinary care recovered within a week to 10 days Case locations The first case of SCI was reported in 2010 after dogs had been walked in woodland in the Sandringham estate in Norfolk Since then cases appear to have been concentrated in East Anglia Nottinghamshire Lincolnshire and Warwickshire although there have been reports from further afield They are generally seen from August onwards with a peak in September and tailing off into November P See our range for yourself at www PetFlapsUK com Call Words BERNARD BALE She might be one of the nation s favourite detectives as Vera but actor Brenda Blethyn has only recently discovered that she is a dog lover and is now making up for lost time Jack of hearts I ve never disliked dogs said Brenda I have always liked them to be honest like most animals but I never got round to actually having one In this profession you never know when you are going to throw things into a case and disappear into hotels for a few months so you tend to do without the kind of things at home that other people might take for granted So I have never really had pets because I have been acting since I was quite young Now though I have Jack and he has been a lot of fun He s quite a trouble maker and something of an actor himself I believe As an example after I d had him for a little while I thought he or me might benefit from going to dog training classes He was still a pup so I thought that it was a good time for him to learn a few things about manners and so on He was so brilliantly well behaved that everyone fell in love with him Butter wouldn t melt in his mouth That was when I discovered that he was something of an actor because as soon as the lesson started he was a different dog and a real disobedient fright There I was trying to look as if I knew what I was doing while my dog was doing his best to embarrass me and remind everyone that he had a mind of his own and would do what he wanted rather than what was expected of him Away from the class he was as good as gold again and it is a real pleasure to take him for walks He has been like that since he was a pup a really nice young dog but far too clever 34 Dogs Today November 2020 to go round the arcades and play on the slot machines just like someone who was visiting There is an air of entertainment around you and maybe that is what made me want to turn to acting as a career I have had a good career so far I have known what it is like not to know where your next job might come from or if there will be another job but something crops up and you are on your way again I have worked with so many lovely people and life is pretty good Of course one of Brenda s greatest successes has been her award winning role as Vera ON CAMERA ACCIDENTS Jack appeared with me on This Morning a while ago and was very well behaved during the interview until he decided that it was time to go and literally jumped on me doing things that should not be seen by the viewers That was embarrassing enough but it was in all the papers the next morning We live in Ramsgate and most mornings I take him for a walk along the beach which is lovely especially when the sun is rising as we walk Jack enjoys it and so do I I always have a few treats in my pocket and a ball to throw and that is when we have another difference of opinion LITTLE CHARMER My idea is I throw the ball you fetch it back to me and I give you the treat Jack doesn t quite see it that way His version is you throw the ball I charm you to give me the treat anyway and then you go and pick up the ball yourself Needless to say Jack s version is the more usual outcome He is such a charmer We have all come to think of Brenda as Vera but of course she has been a successful actor in countless films and TV productions for decades I don t think I ever wanted to do anything else she explained I was born and brought up in Ramsgate and when you grow up in a seaside town you are a part of the holidays or daytrips that visitors seek I used Vera has been marvellous she is very very popular and the series goes to well over 130 countries I think the storylines are very good and quite intricate and the Northumberland coast and countryside are superb and give you that sense of being out in the fresh air The acting and production team is also great so we have all the ingredients for a really good detective series I do enjoy playing Vera although I have to work at the accent She is quite a character cutting at times and gentle when you don t expect it She knows her job too but one of the greatest parts of her appeal is that she is not a glamour girl she has her vulnerabilities and feels safe for both men and women When viewers watch Vera they can figure things out with her not against her We get people asking why Vera does not do a 13 week season twice a year or something like that The truth is that filming takes up about five months of the year as it is and it would be difficult to fit in any more That five months is the reason why Jack was adopted It was because I am away for months on end with Vera that we decided we wanted a dog to keep my husband company Brenda revealed If Matthew came with me he would be sitting around for hours on end just twiddling his thumbs so the sensible thing is for him to be at home in comfort That s where Jack came in When I am home Jack expects me to take him for walks and he likes to jump up on the bed We also watch the Paul O Grady TV It was because I am away for months on end with Vera that we decided we wanted a dog to keep my husband company If Matthew came with me he would be sitting around for hours on end just twiddling his thumbs so the sensible thing is for him to be at home in comfort That s where Jack came in dog shows and that fascinates Jack because he hears a dog bark and immediately goes to the window to see who is making the noise He hasn t quite mastered watching TV perhaps that is because my own favourites are things like The Chase which wouldn t be Jack s first choice He appeared with me on This Morning a while ago and was very well behaved during the interview until he decided that it was time to go and literally jumped on me doing things that should not be seen by the viewers That was embarrassing enough but it was in all the papers the next morning AWARD WINNING We love him to bits though and never thought that a Cockadoodle could make such a difference to us He did finally behave himself at the obedience classes and won a silver medal and a certificate I showed him the medal but his interest waned very quickly when he took a sniff and realised it wasn t edible Then I showed him the certificate and he took it and ate it I think he was making a statement Will we see Jack make an appearance in Vera I doubt it said Brenda I think he has his sights on Hollywood P November 2020 Dogs Today 35

Vera they can figure things out with her not against her We get people asking why Vera does not do a 13 week season twice a year or something like that The truth is that filming takes up about five months of the year as it is and it would be difficult to fit in any more That five months is the reason why Jack was adopted It was because I am away for months on end with Vera that we decided we wanted a dog to keep my husband company Brenda revealed If Matthew came with me he would be sitting around for hours on end just twiddling his thumbs so the sensible thing is for him to be at home in comfort That s where Jack came in When I am home Jack expects me to take him for walks and he likes to jump up on the bed We also watch the Paul O Grady TV It was because I am away for months on end with Vera that we decided we wanted a dog to keep my husband company If Matthew came with me he would be sitting around for hours on end just twiddling his thumbs so the sensible thing is for him to be at home in comfort That s where Jack came in dog shows and that fascinates Jack because he hears a dog bark and immediately goes to the window to see who is making the noise He hasn t quite mastered watching TV perhaps that is because my own favourites are things like The Chase which wouldn t be Jack s first choice He appeared with me on This Morning a while ago and was very well behaved during the interview until he decided that it was time to go and literally jumped on me doing things that should not be seen by the viewers That was embarrassing enough but it was in all the papers the next morning AWARD WINNING We love him to bits though and never thought that a Cockadoodle could make such a difference to us He did finally behave himself at the obedience classes and won a silver medal and a certificate I showed him the medal but his interest waned very quickly when he took a sniff and realised it wasn t edible Then I showed him the certificate and he took it and ate it I think he was making a statement Will we see Jack make an appearance in Vera I doubt it said Brenda I think he has his sights on Hollywood P November 2020 Dogs Today 35

rescue dogs It is about making them feel safe and secure and when they do they can choose where to sleep Just because you have a puppy in your room to start with doesn t mean it will always be in there Soraya Abdel Hadi I did leave my dog to cry it out when he was a puppy and he wasn t allowed upstairs unless we said it was OK He s never had problems with being left on his own I would go down s Me or the Dog Illustrations KEVIN BROCKBANK 48 Dogs Today November 2020 A t the Victoria Stilwell Academy VSA we teach our students how to become good problem solvers especially when it comes to working with dogs that have behaviour problems A particular behaviour that is perceived as negative because it is disruptive inside or outside the home is often a symptom of a larger problem and once the cause is identified and understood work can then begin to guide the dog into making different choices This takes a lot of skill but is made much simpler for clients when a trainer separates the overall training and behaviour modification plan into two parts a management plan and a training plan Both plans can start immediately and run in conjunction with each other but a management plan instantly takes pressure off people and their dogs giving both ends of the leash time and uncluttered headspace to move forward with training When implementing a management plan especially for dogs who are showing reactive or aggressive behaviours safety is of the utmost importance Most management protocols rely on various tools and equipment that can be used inside and outside the home but these tools should not be relied upon exclusively because even the best equipment can fail To reduce the risk of failure you can use back up management by employing what we at VSA call two degrees of safety for every piece of equipment you use For example if a family with an existing dog has just adopted a new cat and the family wants to introduce their dog and cat safely they can keep the cat in a separate bedroom with the door closed the first degree of safety and use an exercise pen or baby gate in front of the door the second degree of safety for the first couple of days to make sure their dog and new cat do not interact when unsupervised Some people prefer to use management alone because teaching their dog is time consuming or their dogs are much more relaxed in certain situations where management is implemented The dog that finds the arrival of guests overwhelming might be much happier chewing on a toy behind a baby gate while guests arrive This is a less stressful option for everyone and avoids the need to keep excitable or reactive dogs under threshold as people enter the home SENSORY THRESHOLD The purpose of using environmental tools such as doors baby gates exercise pens visual barriers noise barriers leashes toys or puzzle games as well as distractions is to prevent the perception or lessen the perceived intensity of a stimulus For reactivity cases defining the exact triggering stimulus is key to modifying the behaviour When I work with dogs with multiple issues I usually identify multiple stimuli which means I will select more than one management strategy employ more than one tool and evaluate my plan regularly There are three points of threshold that are different for each dog Some dogs may find the stimulus immediately aversive and respond instantly while others may take a while to perceive or find the stimulus aversive before they respond The key for successful training and management is to find the dog s sensory threshold The sensory threshold is the point at which the I always take a full canine history and listen to the client s experiences and observations which helps me define the problem dog perceives the stimulus The aversiveness threshold is the point at which the dog finds the stimulus aversive and the response threshold is the point at which the dog feels the need to respond to the stimulus Let s look at a very common problem dogs that are reactive on walks My client tells me that his dog lunges and barks when other dogs get close He also tells me that his dog only reacts inappropriately to larger dogs but seems happy when humans approach him and when humans approach with smaller dogs Now that he has told me that large dogs seem to be the problem I look at what other triggers might cause a reaction including how the triggers stimulate the dog s multiple senses like sight smell or hearing What may be an obvious trigger to a dog like the jingling of another dog s collar tags for example may not be obvious to people There may be multiple visual stimuli that trigger the dog s behaviour and that is why I always take a full canine history and listen to the client s experiences and observations which helps me define the problem In reactivity cases it is important to manage both the stimulus and the dog and because both people and dogs benefit from immediate relief the first management strategy selected True Case History by Peter Neville One determined Tervueren makes a mountain out of a molehill and a wasteland The client Owner Judy O Halloran Address Southampton Hants Name Evie Breed Tervueren Age 5 years Sex Spayed female Hi Peter My Tervueren Evie is determined to dig a hole to the other side of the planet She digs absolutely everywhere and at every opportunity in my garden I am at my wits end I ve even tried putting her poop in the holes to deter her but that simply prompts her to dig right next to each hole I can t plant anything and my garden or the space where I used to have a garden is looking utterly horrible I am in the process of trying to sell the house and I am really struggling because people take one look at the garden and lose interest immediately Please can you help me restore my garden and keep my digging dog happy Best regards Judy The background A digging Tervueren evokes images of a DMD a dog of mass destruction I love and admire this breed but they are definitely not for the faint hearted Tervuerens are dogs that are built for work and if you don t give them any they quickly go self employed and with their boundless energy and enthusiasm I could just imagine how much chaos Evie was 52 Dogs Today November 2020 causing long before I met her and Judy Judy had emailed me during the early stages of the Covid lockdown and so out of necessity we conducted our consultation via Zoom Despite a fairly high level of tech incompetence like many people I ve had to become a bit proficient at this and Judy was keen to get going on addressing Evie s behaviour and so within a day of us making contact I had obtained several videos of Evie in action as well as photos and a completed consultation form with all the basic information I needed We had our first session the following day with a camera set up so I could observe Evie while Judy and I chatted Judy has always had dogs but Evie is her first Tervueren She read about the breed and when she met one in person she fell in love Evie s breeder was extremely thorough She interviewed Judy did a home inspection gave extensive information about the breed s needs and energy levels and each puppy came pre enrolled in a puppy class near each new guardian s home Judy did not choose Evie the breeder helped to match the right puppy to the right owner Judy was invited to spend a few weeks getting to know her pup and bonding with her and so by the time Evie was ready to come home Judy was armed with all the necessary knowledge to give her new companion the best life possible I was so impressed with how thoroughly the breeder prepared each new owner and I particularly liked that she went the extra mile regarding early education and enrolling her pups into schools that she had researched and could wholeheartedly recommend This provided a lovely solid foundation with all the right things in place for a new owner Early learning Evie and Judy duly attended the puppy class and continued with training until lockdown had started Evie was responsive and keen and thoroughly enjoyed it She excelled in every class she took but Judy was the first where once there was a garden to say that it quickly became a full time job keeping the young Evie happy However she was prepared to take on the challenge since she loved her dog dearly She went on long walks with her every day attended training classes twice a week did tracking and agility and she set up a playgroup with a couple of other dogs several times a week Judy worked from 8am to 12pm every weekday but when she came home the rest of the day was almost fully dedicated to Evie When she was left at home alone Evie would sleep or play with many of the wide selection of chew toys that Judy had provided her with and there were no signs of any separation problems and so it was abundantly clear that she was a very happy well stimulated young dog Lockdown trouble But soon after lockdown things started to go rapidly awry Judy initially thought that since she was working from home Evie would love having the extra company all day long and that not going out as much wouldn t be a problem After all they were still walking every day But as many an owner found in these difficult times more company and an owner at home more was not sufficient to compensate for the lack of previous activities Evie discovered the new joy of garden landscaping almost by accident Judy recalled that there had been a mole in the garden one day who had excavated a tunnel across the lawn raising the soil and leaving a couple of hills of extracted soil on top Evie noticed it immediately tracked the tunnel system and set about trying to remove the mole From then on each molehill made her behaviour go downhill Evie spent every waking moment in the garden excavating on a grand scale despite Judy s many efforts to stop her If she kept her indoors Evie became desperate to get out and continue her work and if Judy took out there on a lead she simply struggled and struggled and resisted being walked so that she could dig After months of trying to cajole distract beg deny and train Evie Judy decided she needed help and that s where I came in Peter Neville is an adjunct teaching professor at The Ohio State University USA and a director of Coape International an online education provider of pet behaviour therapy courses www coapesa com and www facebook com COAPEInternational Peter has presented a behavioural case history from his practice for Dogs Today since the very first issue He now lives in Finland with his partner Stella their Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Spooch and cats Bulldozer and Asla but he frequently disappears to Africa to help guide safaris specialising in tracking and studying African Wild Dogs and other large predators with Rae Safaris www raesafaris co za Understanding the issue I explained to Judy that despite her being at home all day and taking Evie for walks Evie had still lost a good chunk of her daily activity budget and she had a lot of free time on her paws now Judy was working while she was at home and Evie had years of learning that told her that when Judy is home we do fun things together Now Judy sat in front of her PC all day much longer than she used to like many people who had to start working from home resulting in Evie having less of her attention which caused confusion and frustration Digging was something she could do whenever she wanted she felt as the garden was always there as were those pesky moles and it was a fun thing that helped her to feel good Tackling the problem I explained to Judy that now Evie had become a miner we had to accept that she was going to be a digger for the rest of her life When a behaviour is that rewarding and well developed you can t just hope that it will disappear So with that in mind we decided to give November 2020 Dogs Today 53

soil on top Evie noticed it immediately tracked the tunnel system and set about trying to remove the mole From then on each molehill made her behaviour go downhill Evie spent every waking moment in the garden excavating on a grand scale despite Judy s many efforts to stop her If she kept her indoors Evie became desperate to get out and continue her work and if Judy took out there on a lead she simply struggled and struggled and resisted being walked so that she could dig After months of trying to cajole distract beg deny and train Evie Judy decided she needed help and that s where I came in Peter Neville is an adjunct teaching professor at The Ohio State University USA and a director of Coape International an online education provider of pet behaviour therapy courses www coapesa com and www facebook com COAPEInternational Peter has presented a behavioural case history from his practice for Dogs Today since the very first issue He now lives in Finland with his partner Stella their Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Spooch and cats Bulldozer and Asla but he frequently disappears to Africa to help guide safaris specialising in tracking and studying African Wild Dogs and other large predators with Rae Safaris www raesafaris co za Understanding the issue I explained to Judy that despite her being at home all day and taking Evie for walks Evie had still lost a good chunk of her daily activity budget and she had a lot of free time on her paws now Judy was working while she was at home and Evie had years of learning that told her that when Judy is home we do fun things together Now Judy sat in front of her PC all day much longer than she used to like many people who had to start working from home resulting in Evie having less of her attention which caused confusion and frustration Digging was something she could do whenever she wanted she felt as the garden was always there as were those pesky moles and it was a fun thing that helped her to feel good Tackling the problem I explained to Judy that now Evie had become a miner we had to accept that she was going to be a digger for the rest of her life When a behaviour is that rewarding and well developed you can t just hope that it will disappear So with that in mind we decided to give November 2020 Dogs Today 53
